Fab old pub, lots of seating, enjoyed our visit

Always been a great visit here, over 30 years and different brand changes too. Great service and drinks available.

A lovely, old fashioned style pub, with a good selection of lagers, beers and ciders. Didn't have food there, so cannot comment. The only negative was the young man serving, he ignored us and served others who were there after us. Thank goodness for the young lady who then attended to us. Only stayed for one round, and moved on.

Three Glamorgan Brewery ales were sunk and all were good, unusually it was the house beer that was best. This is a totally reliable city centre pub and certainly came up trumps today when quite a few hostelries were closed over the Christmas period. And thanks to the staff for putting the darts on TV 👍

Good selection of real ales, I had the Jeminers Pitchfork and fish finger sandwich, both very nice. Smallish pub, so can be busy.

Not a huge pub so prepare to hover for a table. Lovely atmosphere and great staff. All four of us ordered different meals which were all good and tasty. I had the fish & chips and the batter was fantastic. Food orders end at 8.00

Nice pub, but the selection of beers is less than the last time I visited Caerdydd ( over a year ago)

An excellent real ale pub serving freshly-cooked food to order using locally-sourced ingredients as well as superb craft beers including their own ale which shares the pub's name.

We didn't have any food though the menu looks really good. Just came in with my boyfriend and the barmaid was really nice and directed us to a good Chinese! Nice old school pub! Thanks guys :) love bristol x

A pretty decent pub with a nice atmosphere. However the Sunday roast was the worst we have ever had. Watery gravy, the potatoes weren’t crispy and were cold. One of our plates had parsnips the other had leeks. Staff were very apologetic.

Lovely classic pub at the top of the High Street a stones throw from Cardiff Castle. Their menu is small with typical pub fare, only crisps for us on this visit but will definitely be back to sample their fish and chips. The drinks were good, the seating was cozy and the staff were friendly. We will definitely return

Barmaid very grumpy when given a compliment as is often like this plus hardly any chicken in curry plus chips were ruined and soggy as drowned under curry sauce.

Mediocre. Waited quite a while before being offered a table though the serving staff were quite nice. The food (Sunday roast) was just about edible. It was extremely noisy with a couple of disruptive drunk people who the management should have turned out.

Vi havde bestilt bord til 12 personer dagen før og det havde de heldigvis plads til! De ville have vores madbestilling dagen før og så kom den flyvende på slaget til den reserverede tid - de ville virkelig gerne have os ud ad døren igen. Mange af os havde bestilt cawl, som skulle være en traditionel stuvning - det var dog en supertynd suppe, som smagte af ingenting. Betjeningen var sur og forvirret. Alt i alt en ærgerligt oplevelse.

Fish and chips came but the mushy peas were cold the chips had skin on them and bad and black bits on them.

Very delicious traditional food! We had the vegetarian breakfast which includes the glamorgan sausages, Welsh rarebit and the pudding. I really recommend this place

A decent pub near to the castle with a nice ornate Victorian style interior. The drinks were pretty cheap too (they seemed to have a happy hour on 4-7 I think). The staff were quite friendly too and they had a good array of outdoor seating available. Only criticism was the door on the gents cuboid didn’t lock, although that could have just been me! A decent pub for the location.

Hardly any decent boozers in Cardiff now - especially as the city Arms has been ruined. This is a good one.

We were in Cardiff for the day (Saturday afternoon) and wanted somewhere for lunch. Walking past the Blue Bell, saw the menu outside (and people eating at tables outside, and the food looked good) so went in to order lunch. Were greeted by friendly bar staff, ordered food and drinks at the bar, there were a number of free tables to choose from to sit at. Both ordered cod and chips. Food didn't take long, and was excellent. We were both happy with the food, tasted great, actually, have to say the chips were amongst the best I have ever had, if not actually the best I have ever had. And a s a slightly overweight male late 50's, I have eaten a lot of chips in my life :) so these really were good to register as the best! Large portions, and tasted great, have no hesitation highly recommending the Blue Bell. Only slight negative, more amusing than an actual negative, was there was no lock on the gents loo door, and no way of holding it shut, very unfortunate for anyone else trying to get in whilst I was in there, and were faced with my unpleasant sight!

Near Cardiff city centre, it is difficult to find proper pub. Because most place is overcrowded or expensive. I wanted pint of ale. It was so nice and price was reasonable as well. I recommend here. It is so cosy and friendly.

Our meal was absolutely awesome. The fish and chips were really really good, but the sticky toffee with vanilla custard was beyond heavenly. The staff were absolutely fantastic, but I would absolutely return here. I should have taken pictures... we were very hungry and started before I could get pictures... but we'll worth it. I will return next time and get pictures

Nice place to be with a decent vibe. Lovely old fashioned decor and seating and big tv screens spaced around for the rugby. HOWEVER, Guinness drinkers listen in…. If you want a proper pint of Guinness, you won’t find it here I’m afraid. I asked ‘what’s your Guinness like’ she immediately gave the impression that it was Guinness and wasn’t really bothered. She said she pours an ok pint,(which she didn’t) not long enough between 1st and 2nd pour so really small head and not creamy. The best thing about it is that she was wearing a Guinness t-shirt. Could have been filled up more as well. There was a metallic twang to the pint, such a shame. A few lessons could be learnt from the Irish when it comes to Guinness! The search for a decent pint in Cardiff continues….

I realised now that I didn't rate and review this amazing place. I was in Cardiff last year for the first time in my life, and I loved it. When I arrived, I went searching for a place where I can try traditional Welsh food. I ate cawl and Welsh faggots and was amazed how delicious it was. Especially cawl. Didn't eat Welsh faggots completely since the sauce that meatballs were in was having an intense taste that I wasn't used to. It made me full quickly. Despite the strong taste of faggots 😂 I loved both dishes and cannot wait to come back, and eat them again. I really crave cawl. And I hope next time I'll be able to try rarebit.

Can't fault this honest pub for Welsh grub and relaxed pub atmosphere. Allows dogs and provided water. We had the welsh cawl which was great on a cold day, and I had the Welsh rarebit. Could have done with little more seasoning so the chutney was a nice accompaniment. Recommended.

The old goat major or for those old enough back to its original name . Not much has changed since Brains left so a decent selection of ale but the welcome is very friendly with a slightly slower pace than other bars in the city.

Came with a friends from Dominican Republic to try the Welsh cawl 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 really nice place, cheap and if you sit outside can have a glimpse of the Castle (:

Friendly staff, affordable prices, the location is very central and local traditional dishes option. I watch the football match between Spain and Costa Rica, so football check. The toilets were clean.

Visited recently after a morning of shopping. The staff were very polite and friendly. However, unfortunately the food was awful. Ordered an 8oz Rump Steak, medium rare. It was served on top of the chips. It looked rather pale, but when cutting it, it was completely raw. I asked the waitress if it could go back on the grill, by the time it came back out, the chips were cold. The steak, whilst a little more cooked on the outside, was still raw and such a bad piece of meat, the knife couldn't get through it. Basically paid around £14 for a couple of cold chips. I would not go back again.

Llegué hambrienta un domingo a Cardiff y quise probar un Sunday Roast. Al ser ya algo tarde renuncié y estaba buscando cualquier sitio para comer cuando acabé en Blue Bell y vi que tenían Sunday Roast a muy bien precio y me cogí el de medio pollo. Cantidad buenísima y súper sabroso. Las dos chicas que estaban en barra eran muy amables, no tenían mesa dentro y comí fuera, al sentarme se les quedó una mesa libre y salió una de ellas corriendo a avisarme por si quería entrar pero hacía buen día y con las vistas del castillo decidí quedarme fuera.

Best cod and chips I've had in long time. Staff are lovely. Great for alcohol or hot drink whether watching the sport or just a relaxed meal. Love it here ☺

Had a lovely meal here yesterday afternoon (17.10.22) in this charming old traditional pub which also had a fine selection of real ales and the barmaid was very pleasant and welcoming. Definitely be returning here again hopefully soon.

Best lasagne I’ve ever had. Lamp soup is great! Best welsh restaurant!

A great place to watch the world go by with the castle as a backdrop. The staff are very friendly, and I was impressed by the attention to detail put into our drinks; the barman added fruits to the glasses to match the flavour of cider (strawberries and a dash of lime in one and a selection of berries in the other) which made them feel rather special.
