Lovely Sunday lunch, great atmosphere, very welcoming and great service. The beef was so tender and the banoffi sundae was lovely.

We almost didnt find this pub so allow time to get there. The view from the road is lovely and there is parking on a gravelled service on the opposite side of the road. A busy pub on Sundays but they made an effort to greet everyone. We were tucked away in the snug on our own. My partner liked the seclusion and the view from the window, I felt isolated and that the area could do with a spruce up. The meal tasted great. How do they manage to cook to bring out all the flavours like that. They did a fantastic job of catering for gluten free. I was perturbed by the plate swimming in thin gravy, but soon won over by the flavours. I had a kind of Eton Mess for pudding made with berries and that was memorable - really great, though perhaps too much thick cream and too little meringue.

Had the pleasure of eating Sunday lunch in this gem of a pub today. Staff were welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. I have food intolerances but the chef is knowledgeable and this is well catered for. We could not fault our meals everything was delicious and perfectly cooked. HIGHLY RECOMMEND it. Our only regret is we were too full to try the amazing desserts! We are looking forward to returning soon.

Lovely food and friendly staff. A special mention for Fiona who was so accommodating with regards to food intolerances. Nothing was too much trouble & the dairy-free, egg-free prawn/pasta dish she created was DELICIOUS! It can be hard to eat out when you have intolerances but I was made to feel very welcome. Would highly recommend & felt so relieved not to be made to feel awkward. Thank you.

We booked to eat at the blue ball on the night boris announced the second lockdown,on entry the pub was very covid secure and we were greeted by a lovely barmaid who made us instantly welcome, after being seated we placed a drinks order and looked at the menu, the menu is not massive but enough to make you really think about your choices,I had baked Camembert with baby figs and it was delicious and the barmaid help me pick my main as I was undecided and I was not disappointed with my veggie burger, everything was cooked fresh and the portions are huge,I didn’t want to miss out on dessert so they kindly packed me up one to take away, this is certainly a little gem and well worth a visit

My first visit to the Blue Ball, Wellington, with a friend who joins me once a month or so to visit a different pub in our area. The Blue Ball is a little off the beaten track and you have to go a reasonable distance off the A38 to reach it at Samford Moor which is close to Wellington. Spacious car park opposite which has the delightful blue ball sign to greet you. I have since found out that a blue ball was hoisted in olden times to signify that the fishing fleet was in. This could only mean a few small trout caught in the River Culm nearby and delivered to this land locked inn. A very quiet Thursday and we were looked after by an efficient gentleman, sporting his Padbrook Park golf club pullover. who seemed to do everything. We thought he may also have been doing the cooking but a female chef appeared and spoke to us. Always nice to see the chef. The menu was ok - seen better - seen worse. All well presented and hot including the plates. Reasonable prices and sensible portions. What was lacking on a very quiet day was atmosphere and although everything was acceptable we will not be going back. Many other pubs in the area have roaring log fires, enjoyable music and interesting cats. Do be careful when stepping out of the pub straight on to the road and even more careful driving out of the car park as you are on a blind bend with fast moving cars coming on your side of the road.

Stopped for lunch ramdomly whilst in the area. We were made to feel very welcome by landlord and locals alike. The food was well cooked, portions were generous and the service was excellent. Prices were very good too.The inn itself is a proper English pub, nicely located with beautiful views across the adjoining countryside. There is a nice outside seating area and it ius our intention to return in the spring when we can take full advantage of such a little gem.

Usually when a restaurant says they cater for alternative diets you can expect a very 2nd rate alternative at the end of a menu. This place really serves wonderful food. The veggies cooked to perfection and service and bar staff extremely good. Would recommend especially if you want a decent vegan or vegetarian lunch. One of our party had the roast beef which was also excellent.

Inside, the pub is lovely. Welcoming friendly staff so was very much looking forward to lunch in the garden. A bit more expensive than we would have thought but assumed we would get exceptional quality. We were wrong. A Ploughmans was more than £12. The ham was not home cooked and thinly sliced. No pickled onion. The Pannini with goats cheese: some sort of jam and walnuts was £8.50. Walnuts? 2 tiny pieces and the lettuce garnish was slimy and limp. Hugely disappointing and will not go again. However the chips were amazing!

The pub looks great inside, is spotlessly clean and warm and cosy. The featherblade steak bourguignon was exceptionally tasty, with creamy mash and good quantity of mixed veg on the side. Great menu from traditional pub grub to some more special dishes and a good selection for vegetarians. The only downside is I didn't have room for pudding this time!! We booked the skittle alley for a meal and an informal game. We were forced to sit on split tables in the bar and the landlady made it clear that she did not care that she had deliberately ruined our evening to make a double booking. She blamed staff when she took the booking herself, and sent a staff member to break the news to us. The meal was ok, but the turkey was rubbish, all skin and stuffing. Very disappointing evening and as we went there specifically to use the skittlealley, very poor. Waiting staff were good, but food poor value for money.

For me a roast is about the meat, for my husband it's about the veg and we've not found anywhere that does decent roast potatoes - until now. The Blue Ball gets it all right, meat is melt in the mouth and rare, veg is interesting colourful and varied and the potatoes are not like tasteless cardboard as they are elsewhere. AND there is loads of gravy. Plus on a cold, rainy, windy day they were serving mulled wine to die for. Will definitely be visiting again.

First visit today for lunch, having heard good things about the food. The pub today was very very busy and only one person behind the bar. She was charming but untrained and told us that she did not work there but was just helping out today. She was doing her best single-handedly but it needed at least two members of staff behind the bar. Our table was in a cold back room near the gents loo and next to the pool table where 3 young men were playing a game. To be fair we only booked yesterday and although we asked to be moved to a different table this was not possible as they were fully booked. The food came out promptly and our starters were excellent. We both ordered the roast beef main course, which was disappointing. We were almost put off our food because the plates came swimming in gravy. There was a good selection of vegetables but the beef was very finely cut and not particularly tasty. Altogether an underwhelming experience.

Arrive to a fairly empty car park, get in the pub there was one table of six diners and two tables of two. Ask at the bar if there are any tables for two (7:30pm, Saturday eve) Member of bar staff looks at us like that's a strange request and retreats to the kitchen to find out. Returns with the answer we can be squeezed in. So we order our drinks, never seen anyone pull a pint whilst propping their head up with their arm.Pint of shandy gets slapped on the bar and bar maid just managed to support her own head to pour a wine.Off we go to our table, waitress brings a piece of paper, tonight's menu... unbeknown to us we can only have the Christmas Party Menu as its December. Well in my limited experience ( previous Assistant Restaurant Manager for a big chain) a Christmas Party Meal is usually what it states.. for a Christmas Party, usually pre booked. If the pub wants to push for a fine dining experience, which they seem to be, some serious staff training is required. We declined staying for a meal, just as well as heard other diners complaining how long their courses were taking. Dropped into another pub, several Christmas Parties on, less front of house staff, full menu available. Two courses finished and homeward bound in under an hour.

First time at the Blue Ball so no idea what to expect just complimentary reviews and recommendations from friends...time for lunch.Warm welcome, nicely laid out interior, decent beers, and good service from the bar. Meal choice good, and orders taken in good time from the table. The food when it arrived was a pleasant surprise as it was well prepared and presented. The 'Orchard Board' didn't look anything like a ploughman's (relief) and was excellent - even down to the freshly cooked baguette. Four choices of vegetarian meal? - bonus point! A fussy rice lover present declared the risotto as excellent - praise indeed. Would have been five stars save for the assumption that everyone wants a mustard scripted 'Bangers and Mash' on their plate - not everyone loves mustard, and that as good as the barlady/waitress was, one person running both the bar and the tables is probably not enough. We weren't in a hurry so it mattered not and we enjoyed the lunch immensely but had a few more tables appeared for lunch, reinforcements would have been necessary. Acid test? Will we return? Yes.

However, there is on negative, the smoking needs to be sorted out, every time the front door opens or is left open smoke from the smokers just outside drifts into the restaurant area - not very pleasant when you're a nonsmoker and eating

As it was a special meal we both chose the ribeye steak, The meal came and was presented well, the chips were gorgeous as was the rest apart from the steak which was cooked as we asked but at nearly £18 each was very bland and not worth the price. We decided to go here for a meal after seeing the signs. Prior to going we looked at the tripadvisor reviews and we were glad we did! When the specials board arrived, we asked for the prices to be greeted with a blank look and were informed there wasn't room for the prices on the board. Glad we did ask as most of the starters were a good price, except the Camembert at £12! We opted out of starters and had the special of meatballs and also the duck which were lovely, filling and wholesome! We then had puddings, most of which were £5.95 (after asking the prices again!) and the blue ball bash was really nice. Then the shocker, Zesty Citrus Pavlova - Meringue nests which didn't look home made, cream and Marmalade...Marmalade! No actual fruit in it, the orange marmalade didn't even have any shreds in. It was accompanied with a slices strawberry, topped with a bitter apple sauce....on a citrus pudding!? I guess it was topped with a chunky slice of orange. Quote from the table next door which was "no fruit, none at all"!? Would highly recommend the pub for mains and the good beer but NOT for the puddings!

Stunning Sunday lunch. Superbly cooked meat (we all ate roast pork shoulder), delicious vegetables, tasty yorkshires and well seasoned gravy. Our daughter (age 5) also has coeliac disease and she was able to eat the whole roast dinner. Our huge compliments to the chef(s) as this can often be a challenge when dining out.

We came for a spontaneous dinner to The Blue Ball as we had been told the food was great and it did not disappoint. The menu has something for everyone and the portion sizes are generous. I had the duck which was cooked to perfection. The staff were friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back soon with the family.

We couldn't face the Taunton Deane motorway service station which was crammed full so drove off down the A38. Not far along we saw the sign to the Blue Ball. Best thing we did all day was to stop and call in for lunch. The car park is opposite the pub with a garden with lovely views. We were walking towards the pub with my 92 year old mother nervously using a tri-wheel to cross the road. Out came a lovely cheery lady to help - turned out to be Fiona the landlady. What a lovely place, a free house with well kept Doombar on tap. Fiona could not do enough for us, mark if sure Mum was comfortable. We ordered baguettes which we stuffed overfull with large salad and crisps. My wife and I had bacon, Brie and cranberry & Mum had tuna and cucumber. Both delicious. Fiona helped us get Mum back in the car safely for us to continue our journey on holiday to south Devon. But having seen the dinner menu and had a taste of the Landlady's attention to detail and desire to keep customers happy we will definitely detour to visit again. Can't wait!

Went here with friends, and it was well worth it, lovely place to eat, the staff were lovely , and the steak was fantastic, nothing was to much trouble for the girls. The mushroom starter was so nice, we had all had more than enough to eat that we didn't even look at the desert menu, but saw a few go past, and wish we had some room left!! Will go there again next time we are down from the new forest, a first class place to eat

Had a lovely meal here but was surprised to be charged £12.50 for the baked camembert starter from the specials board. No prices are shown on the specials board but we presumed they would be in line with the general prices, not more expensive than the mains. When we queried it apparently it was due to the truffles that no-one had noticed when eating - check the price of any specials to avoid unwelcome surprises at the end if the meal. Otherwise a very nice place to eat with good food.

Having heard good things recently about the Blue Ball Inn, my girlfriend and I decided to give it a try last night and we weren't disappointed! We arrived at 8pm to a packed bar, being that it was skittles night, but we were seen to straight away and with our drinks ordered we sat down at our table. There was a lovely buzz about the place with a mix of local drinkers and diners. The waiting staff were very knowledgable and friendly and answered all of the questions we had. I opted for the soup of the day followed by hunters chicken, and my girlfriend went for the baked camembert, followed by rack of lamb. She asked for it with chips and not mash which was absolutely fine. The starters were huge! A massive bowl of piping hot soup, and the biggest camembert I've ever seen! Both were delicious though, as was the warm baked bread they were accompanied with.Again, when the mains came out they were obviously freshly prepared and again cooked as both were lovely and hot. My hunters chicken was amazing, the best I've had in a long time! My girlfriend also commented that the lamb was perfectly cooked and she ate every last bit (which is very rare!). We just about managed to squeeze in a chocolate brownie Sunday to share, before having a lovely chat with one of the owners, Fiona. What a lovely lady, and what a fantastic country pub she and her husband have turned the Blue Ball into!We will certainly return and look forward to seeing Fiona and John again!

Popped here a few weeks back with the kids and some friends for Sunday roast.I'm a bit of a believer that any roast you have out will never match what you make at home, which is still true, however the roast I had at the Blue Ball was the closest I've ever experience to the real deal.Lovely all round, good selection of meats to choose from, lots of different veg (some a little fancified for my liking) but on the whole it was cracking!

I know from experience that The Blue Ball serves up some wonderful food. However they do not help themselves by failing to update the menus on their website. The Christmas 2015 menu is still there.

The location of this pub is on the outskirts of Wellington with fantastic views out over the Somerset countryside. The pub has been refurbished over the years and now is a most welcome place to visit. The staff were good and the service great. The food was fantastic for a lunch menu.It all seems to be cook fresh to order. Try the sausages they were superb.Must go back in the summer to use the garden.

Great pub, great food and great service and really like the decor too. Food was so good and fresh. It was quiz night the night we went and it was a great atmosphere. Like being in someone's front room. We joined in the quiz although we are not quizzers but made to feel part of it thanks to the quiz master. Don't know her name but she was great. Had a fabulous evening. Thanks to all at the White Horse

We were in the area and visited il basilico. It was great - very good food and very friendly staff. Husband enjoyed his food so much that he had a second mains as a desert! And he ate it all!

We didn’t stay at the hotel but had Afternoon Tea there which this review is about! Poor service as waiters seem to have no idea how to serve. We were rushed to pay as they were finishing for the day. We were not offered what type of tea to have. One of us asked for topping up the water glass while the other two got ignored! They had no knowledge of the place either given it’s a building with some history! A refreshing conversation was with the gardener who has good knowledge of the place, but unfortunately it was too late.
