Bloaters in East Devon

Had fish and chips tonight at about 5-15pm so early chips were dry and hard definitely not fresh very disappointed

Food was greasy sausages hard and very small.Only sell one size of chips so ended up by two boxes and ended up wasting some.Will not be returning.Not a patch on Greendale.

I enjoyed the chips and batter but the food was horrendously greasy. To the point it was dripping through the bag and hardening on the sides of the box. Please find a way to reduce the amount of grease as it makes the food extremely difficult to eat and got the inside of my car covered.

We had 3 portions of mushy peas left off our order and when I tried to call to explain the phone was ignored. Bad service unfortunately would have been great if phone was answered

I hear all these people raving about bloaters and how good they are so i thought i would give them a try Disappointing doesn't cut it the food was terrible chips over cooked crunchy and dry asked for salt and vinegar didnt find the chip they coated The chips dont taste like chips if that makes sence i think they are frozen chips and they just fry them Had a pie too that was cooked in a microwave and was disgusting too wife had scampi and was on the toilet as soon as we got home not impressed and definitely wont be going there again AVOID

Fantastic chips, outstanding beautiful battered cod. What's not to like. Jumbo sausage and chips with curry sauce is also awesome 😘

Was in area, needed food. Did the job and then some! Very good sized portions and nice tasting bit of fish, with good chips.

I'm really not impressed with this chip shop. The last time I visited 3 years ago I placed quite a large order including 2 large chips, which when I got home I could fit both portions in 1 box. I went back again today, and same old story, it's very overpriced for what you get. The chip portions are stingy and being charged £6.80 for 10 small scampi is borderline ridiculous. The cod bites are good value but usually come out over cooked and quite dry so it's very hit and miss.

Excellent quality cooked to order fish and chip shop fare, what's not to like? Also does a great range of Burgers as well as all the family favourites such as mushy peas, sausages, pies and pasties. Food was hot and very tasty, highly recommended if in the area.

Not been here for a while, but it was as good as I remember, nice size portion of chips, and they had that proper chippy taste to them! Will be back!

Stopped here whilst on holiday and wasn't disappointed! Ticket system in place as they're so busy. Cod and chips were cooked to order and tasted fantastic!

The fish and chips from here are beautiful. The fish is lovely. it's pure white flakes and delicious. You do have a wait because of it being so popular, but you can excuse that.

Food is so good, generous portions. Lovely fish, cod bites are huge...fish cake looked very good too...the kids ate it and enjoyed it!

UPDATE (May 2023): Have had some great meals from Bloaters, but tonight's was very disappointing. Spotty-faced youth took my order, enquired whether I wanted salt and vinegar, to which I enthusiastically replied 'Yes, please!" When my ticket was called, some 20 minutes later(!), I asked for confirmation of the salt and vinegar, which he told me he'd added. Took our two meals (cost £22) down to the promenade at Sidmouth to eat, a couple of miles away and - you guessed it - not a trace of either salt or vinegar, despite a forensic-like search. Sucked all the enjoyment out of the occasion for us, couldn't be bothered to go back. Moral of the story: if it's a spotty kid putting the orders together, turn around and go somewhere else, or insist an appropriately qualified grown up does them, in which case you'll get a great supper. Excellent quality fish and chips for my wife and a pie and chips for me. Large portions of chips, served in recyclable cardboard boxes, and *not* wrapped in layers of paper so that the steam makes them all soggy, like other establishments. If you've a clear run into Sidmouth you can sit on the prom and enjoy your supper whilst it's still warm. Delightful on a summer evening. Only lost one star because I asked for lots of salt and vinegar when they enquired, but it was barely detectable when I ate the meal. I will go back but may take my own condiments with me next time....

Excellent cod and chips would recommendations.

Large chips £3.90 and you get what would be small anywhere else. I even called out the guy behind counter and he confirmed that's actually large! Honestly wouldn't be enough for 2 children. It's a shame because in general the rest of the order was good, but to rob customers on the cheapest of products is rediculous. I think greed is playing a bigger part than cost of living crisis. Now I have to find another decent fish and chip shop! Dissapointed.

Drove up here after having read the negative reviews on the chip shop on the town centre. It was well worth the journey. Huge pieces of fish cooked to perfection. Highly recommended.

Very expensive for fish and frozen chips shop around there is cheaper about. But that's my view

Just moved to Sidford and this is very near our house. Tried for the first time. Unbelievably tasty. Great value for money. Extremely popular and I can see why. Husband says, best fish and chips he has had. Enough said. Friendly staff also. 👍👍👍👍

Very good fish and chips at a good price.

Delicious food with generous portions. I had Haddock and my family had Cod. The batter was light and crispy and the chips chunky and well cooked. I have never had a better fish and chips. The only downside was that I had to wait 30 mins for my order to be cooked.

Chips were beautiful,my partners fish looked nice,though he would of liked his batter crispy(impossible with a 15 minute drive home),my battered sausage didnt have much batter but was still very tasty. Will definitely visit again

I am a very frequent visitor to this wonderful fish and chip bar. Both the fish and chips are freshly cooked and are always of a superb standard. The batter is perfect.

Great fish and chips, you order your food get given an order number and wait for it to be prepared, usually very busy in the summer months.

It would be more welcoming if the staff could at least cracking a smile, especially the girl with ginger hair who is the most unwelcoming person I've seen.

Been getting take away cod and chips from here for years. Always superb - but tonight not good. Chips waxy and fish nit the best. Thought you should know

Fish was over cooked. Fish and chips incuding the box was soaking in oil. Not impressed! Also this place is a rip off the prices ha! I guess I expected a better experience

Decent size portions but the customer service could be better

Probably the best chip shop in England. We have never found better. The only problem is it is very popular and you may have to wait, but there is a car park just around the corner. (20p) or free dependinding on the time of day.

Have just eaten a delicious meal of fish and chips. Never seen such large pieces of cod. Batter was delicious. Lovely atmosphere as people waited for their orders. Cheers raised when number called!! Lovely meal for the last evening of our holiday!!

The best fish and chips for miles, so glad to have found this place as it'll now be our regular. The fish is by far the best I have found in East Devon and the chips are lovely too! Easy to grab on the way in to Sidmouth, then head towards the beach (much better than what the tourist traps offer)

Absolutely fabulous. Not in Sidmouth but well worth the short drive to get there. Fish was huge and the batter so crispy, chips lovely and fluffy. All freshly cooked, shame we live so far away, I'd eat their food regularly in a heartbeat.

Food was very good. The chips to be precise, nice fluffy and not too soft! Just right. Sauages were very tasty too. Highly recommend on those 2 factors. Staff were very nice, services was quick. Decent selection, your normal chip shop stuff, burgers, pies etc. Burgers looked good, might have them next time. Parking wasn't too bad, there was a residential area we parked, but there was a public car park right next door.
