Having been to Blinis many times over the last twelve years we were surprised to find several free tables at 1.30. The reason may be the food, which has really gone downhill. The burger was pretty standard but the accompanying 'gourmet' chips were anything but - enormous, flabby and undercooked - while the victoria sponge was a peculiar muddy brown colour with the wrong sort of sponge, one thick layer of goo, plus it tasted disgusting. To be fair they didn't charge us for this excrescence. The saving grace was the polite and friendly service from a bearded waiter (his colleague evidently hadn't finished his course at the charm school) and as always the perfect location and light comfortabl;e atmosphere, although the chairs were getting a bit grubby and could do witrh a clean. As others have said, a disappointing experience and maybe one not worth repeating.

I have been to Blinis a few times and have always been happy with the food and the atmosphere. This time I tried the 'grilled halloumi in a toasted bap with hummus, roasted red pepper & sweet potato fries'. Not being a sweet potato fan I switched to 'aspen fries; skinny skin-in fries with truffle oil & parmesan'. The grilled halloumi was cold and tasteless: halloumi needs to be properly grilled/pan fried to bring out its flavour, and preferably served hot. The 'skinny fries' seemed to be standard catering pack chips with no obvious taste of truffle oil and precious little parmesan, and not particularly skinny. Blinis has an interesting menu, why should it be beyond the the capabilities of any chef to peel & slice a few maris pipers and make proper chips/fries? Rather than pudding we decided on cake & coffee. The Devon Apple Cake was dry and distinctly lacking in apple. Although the restaurant was 'fully booked' and a number of people were turned away, fewer than half the tables were actually occupied...I can only surmise that, like many establishments, they are suffering from staffing problems. As I say, I like Blinis so that's why I am probably being generous with 3 stars.

Was here several years ago and whilst clean and friendly this time the food was poor. The prawns had been nuked and my partners tempura weren’t great. Probably still good for a coffee and sandwich but would stay clear of the ‘cooked’ mains.

Enticed by the prospect of blinis, which I love, this is a welcoming place with great staff. And it may be the other things on the menu are more thrilling, but our blinis with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon were uninspiring. Slightly overcooked eggs, bland smoked salmon underneath the eggs (on top is much better IMO) and no yeasty taste to the blinis. We might come back for other menu options - the vibe is quite nice.

We want to thank the people at Blinis for their hospitality today. We turned up at lunch time as drowned rats after a sudden downpour. looking for coffee. Although they were just doing lunches, we were welcomed in and had a nice Coffee, tea and coke. We also tried the mince pies, brownie and Devon apple cake, all of which were excellent. Thank you for letting us in and for the fantastic cakes!!

It was a quickish lunch - friend had the grilled goats cheese on walnut toast etc. - no problem needing gluten free. Met a friend for lunch today at Blini's. Mike is always friendly and welcoming and we ordered main courses after a quick soft drink. I have to say that I have had some burgers in my time ( you could tell if you knew me) but the cheeseburger with crispy bacon was honestly the best I have had outside of Las Vegas ( which was a Big Kahuna Burger for those of you who have seen the film "pulp fiction" and was mind blowing) anyway this was served in an Soft fresh white roll, and the ground beef served "medium" which is the right way to have a burger in my book, was absolutely fantastic. I have to honest here and say that I had one last week and thought it was so good, I had to have another !! All we need now is some skinny fries eh Mikey!!Thank you and don't take it off your menu until I have had enough of them!

Had a delicious meal at Blinis today! The staff were very welcoming and friendly and nothing was too much trouble! My husband and I had the salmon and the crispy skin was ‘just right’! The crushed new potatoes were absolutely delicious as was the asparagus. My daughter and partner both had open sandwiches with an extra sides portion of skinny fries which they really enjoyed and also thought delicious! The key lime and ginger pie desert was delicious and beautifully presented with fresh raspberries and blueberries..mine was served with a generous portion of fresh cream in a small jug and my husband’s with ice cream! We finished our meal with a cappuccino which was also served with a small wrapped biscuit and when we finally asked for the bill it came with a yummy individually wrapped chocolate mint chocolate each! We used to love this place but our last visit has put us off for good. The food just wasn't very tasty, the wine was over-priced, the service was hurried and bordered on rude at times and complaints were not followed up. I think the restaurant has grown complacent, but word will soon get round as Sidmouth is a small place and people talk. I don't know whether the senior staff own the place, I do hope not, and will wait and see if it comes under new management.

Hadn’t been to Blinis for years but went in for lunch this week on Monday. They were very busy with most tables reserved but we we were lucky to be seated. There was a normal menu and a specials menu to choose from which was really difficult as everything sounded lovely. My friend and I decided to share a starter of home made duck pate served with thick toast and an obviously home made delicious chutney and some leaves. It was really good and plenty for two at £6.95. I opted for an open lasagne of monk fish , smoked salmon and prawns in a light lemon cream sauce. It was really yummy with beautiful home made pasta and lots of fish and prawns. My friend had the roasted duck leg with a gratin of potatoes cabbage and a lovely sauce served separately. Although quite full at the end of our main courses we succumbed to sharing a spiced pear crumble served with Christmas pudding ice cream! The crumble was excellent, very chunky and loaded with pecans! The total bill including my friend’s large glass if pino was just short of £45. So ignoring the wine our food cost was about £19 each which was excellent value for such good well presented food and excellent friendly service. We will return!

My partner and I had most awful experience in this place recently and I have to say something to warn others. The Head waiter was extremely rude. The reserve signs on the tables were not clear at all. Some of them were set for two hrs ahead of the current time and after being snapped at for choosing the wrong table initially we were left akwardly trawling all the tables without assistance, we just wanted was a quick breakfast. The other staff were helpful and kind but the head waiter lept at me enraged, telling me if I could read the reservation I would see this table was booked out within the hour, then again when I gently suggested another table the same. He snapped very aggressively.

"could i have my Kir Royale with Creme de Mure?" I asked, "NO Kir Royale only with Cassis, that is KirRoyale" (which is untrue), any decent restaurant do it. Then turned out not real ones anyway, bright fake colour n not real champagene, tasted horrid. Then "Could you replace potato to either veg or salad for me"? I asked, "NO that is the dish" pointing at the menu, "but im allergic", "will remove the potato then". 45 mins later they turned up we were sooo hungry as they didnt give us bread or anything. Chef must have realised it look ridiculous just 1 small piece of fish with soggy mash peas so he put on salad (with bottled supermarket dressing). I have never been anywhere i dreaded to leave, if not because i was with someone disable i would have walked out. Food was just ok but not worth the attitude. We walked in at 2.15pm to be greeted and given a choice of tables to sit at. The waiter then brought all the lunch menus over to us before I could explain that we just wanted coffee and cake. He seemed a bit crestfallen and disappeared and there was a longer than necessary wait before another member of staff took our order. We ordered a cappuccino, a ginger beer, a piece of Devon apple cake and a pieces of lemon drizzle. Coffee and cakes really good. My ginger beer was OK, but the waiter didn't bring me the Luscombe bottle, he just brought me the drink already poured. Tired after a long morning's walk I chose not to question whether or not it was a Luscombe's or if it had been poured from the tap behind the bar. I was charged for a Luscombe's and would have been happier to see the bottle on my table. But I would like to return as the lunches being served to other customers looked very good. Plenty of magazines and newspapers to read. Very tastefully decorated with a full bar.

When the dishes arrived it looked like there were two doughnuts on the plate, sadly there was little taste or sight of fish within the tough coating. So two enormous mashed potato balls! The small amount of overdressed salad was OK but overall this was poor value for £9.95. The linguine was fine with some evidence of crab. We have had good meals here in the past but this was disappointing.

We popped in to Blinis for coffee and cake, service good and quick. The staff are very polite and helpful. I would recommend this venue for coffee and a snack or meal.

My wife and I have been weekly luncheon customers of Blinis for over ten years. We have always found the serving staff (Mike and Andrea, and before Andrea , Lucy) attentive and polite. They have created a relaxed atmosphere conducive to a good lunch. We have always found the food to be excellent and reasonably priced, although as adults, we have never attempted the smaller portions of the children's menu.

I am not sure what l should say about this place but l read the reviews and on all the other cafes l could find on line before l visited Sidmouth and decided Blinis was the one so lunch there was the order of the day.I liked Sidmouth a lot but Blinis was immensely disappointing for the money and don't ask for scrambled eggs without the salmon as you will only be given the childs portion without being told. My husband was given a small square of bread with all the ends cut off and just enough egg to cover the bread. Ok so that was breakfast really but scrambled eggs was what my husband fancied having studied the menu. I had something more like lunch but it too wasn't much of a portion but l accepted mine and it tasted ok. I was not however going to accept that they should dish up something so small for a man to eat so l made the complaint to the manager who said exactly this." Plain scrambled egg isn't on the menu for adults only children." Could they not have told my husband this when ordering . My suggestion is why couldn't they just take the salmon out of the larger portion. What is happening that managers are incapable of making executive decisions or could he just not be bothered. Won't even bother going back there even for the coffee in future. Plenty of other good places in Sidmouth we have since discovered

The coffee here cannot be beaten, especially when it is made by Mike. It may be more expensive than many others, but it is worth it. A friendly place. Such a shame that it is not open in January.

Great menue but make sure you book. Average price bracket, matches the style of food and the presentation not cheap but - all of which are very well done. little bit slow on the service but it was packed out.

Blinis isn’t the cheapest place for a coffee or a light lunch – but it’s well worth the extra coppers if it takes your fancy. The atmosphere is always calm and relaxing and the coffee good and nicely served. This time we returned for lunch. My wife enjoyed her goat cheese salad. My seared scallops with black pudding – scallops being a particular favourite of mine – were well up to standard. Recommended!

Visited recently with my friend for a goo gossip and a spot of lunch. The staff are friendly, the food great and choice of drinks good. Shame it doesn't open in the evening as we would visit often!

Pleasant interior, friendly staff and an interesting menu. A great shame that this establishment promised so much but was let down by the food.We had prawn dish and also a meal with goats cheese, they were both okay as far as they went but unfortunately they did not go far enough. The prawns were tiny and the goats cheese was virtually non existent !!! Not a place we would rush back to, strictly average.

Good food from an imaginative menu. Sensible prices, good service at a pleasant speed, and either a quick snack or a chill out longer stay. Pity it closes so early as it would be a nice evening venue.

We had lunch at Blinis for my Mums birthday and it was lovely! It's an unusual old building with some lovely quirky features and, as it was a sunny day, the sun was streaming through the windows - lovely ambience. The staff were polite and attentive and the food was great - perhaps a little on the pricey side for lunch but as it was a special occasion it was great. We all chose something different and it was all lovely. We will be back, thank you for a great experience

Recently visited with family for coffee. The service was great and coffee good but the cafe was so cold we sat and shivered! We witnessed other people coming in, then leaving as it was so cold. It needs to be warmed up with the Winter season here otherwise custom will be lost.

Gingerbread house cafe is a lovely local coffee/breakfast/lunch spot on the high st, just up from the beach. I recently ordered a cream tea for two box to be delivered to my mother for her birthday as I live far away. She loved it, it was fresh and delicious and included sandwiches, scones, clotted cream and all the fixings, and she couldn’t have been happier to be surprised on her birthday with a friendly face and a special delivery. They are also very active in the community and offered free lunches for school kids during Covid. A great cafe!

Visited today with my elderly mother with very specific requirements on colour and style. Staff were extremely helpful and it felt like most of the ladies wear team were looking after us. Thank you so much
