The staff here are great, super friendly but they don't hover and make you uncomfortable. We had the mussels for starters and the sauce with the mussels was light and refreshing ( nothing heavy) We had steak for our mains and it was delicious, perfectly cooked and super tender. We opted to have the whisky sauce with our steak and I swear that it came straight from heaven. The chips were cooked to perfection and the chef even came out to chat with us. He was so down to earth and lovely. I would definitely recommend this establishment. Ten out of ten.

Food was very good and at a very good price. Service was very attentive and quick. Everything came hot, fresh and delicious. Is worth the walk out of the main busy area to try. Only thing i would change is the range of wine avaliable by the glass was basic - would have liked a malbec/rioja/pinot noir option like most pubs do now. Merlot was nice but not my personal preference.

This was a disappointing experience. The room decor and ambience was perfect for a quiet dining experience but the food quality was not what we expected, considering the menu prices. Starters were enjoyable but the portion sizes were inadequate. My rib eye streak was small and was cooked to medium/well done when I asked for medium/ rare. It came with chips and side salad which consisted of two cherry tomatoes and few bits of rocket. My wife's lamb was well cooked and tasty but came with small quantity of cold mashed potato and one blackberry - no veg. This venue has the potential to be a good small restaurant but the menu and food quality needs to improve. To be fair we were compensated for our disappointment but would have preferred to pay in full for a better meals.

Blackwood's was disappointing. We went as an extended family to celebrate my mother's 85th birthday. The restaurant looked lovely and was calm and quiet when we arrived at 6pm. We had looked at the menu on line but were immediately told two of the options were not available. This further reduced the gf options for one of our party. Two asked for a starter served as a main portion but quantities didn't seem to be adjusted greatly. My mother chose slow cooked lamb but it was served raw. I was served a millefeuille which was little more than dry pastry. Accompanying veg and sauces for dishes seemed to bear little resemblance to that quoted in the menu. One waiter worked very hard and was as attentive as he could be with a full restaurant, while another member of staff sat in the bar area on his phone most of the evening only giving a half hearted attempt to clear half the table before heading back to his phone. I rarely comment on line but on the basis that the restaurant was full with visitors from abroad, I feel sad that this is the impression given of our country's hospitality. Come on Blackwood's - you can do better!

Blackwoods is the hotel restaurant at the Nira Caledonia, where we happened to be staying for a night, so we ate there almost by chance. Two of the four of us were vegetarians, so that sets a high bar, but the food was excellent. A few bites into my main course, which was a citron salmon dish, I found myself thinking, "This is the best meal I've had in a long time." The starters, the mains, and the desserts—we had banoffee were all scrumptious. And my friend loved their special scotch. This is a place to go for a special occasion: you won't be disappointed!

Last night Blackstone’s served up a nice dinner for the two of us. We ordered grilled salmon along with salad sides and a side of sweet potato fries. Nice to have the opportunity to taste grilled North Sea salmon in Scotland. This was delicious. Service was excellent.

As main the salmon and the cod accompanied by grilled vegerables an a blackwood salad. A special thank you for the advice to drink the italian chardonnay from puglia, it was very nice

Lovely little restaurant in the heart of Edinburgh. The atmosphere is intimate and quiet, the food is tasty and expertly cooked. The menu is quite limited, but I enjoyed the starter of mussels "marinière" and the cod with prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, as well as their version of cranachan, lighter and more refreshing than most others I have tasted. The prices were on the high side but not unexpectedly so. As our dinner was a celebratory one, we started with a glass of a pleasant Spanish 'espumoso' and to our pleasant surprise, the staff had realised we were celebrating and did not charge us for it. This was typical of the friendly and pleasant but professional service. We can't wait to go back and try other items in their menu.

For £35 I expected a beef bourguignon that is out of this world. However, while what I got was perfectly acceptable, it tasted no different to what I make in the slowcooker on a lazy Sunday. The freshly baked bread was really heavy and the side consisting only of a big bunch of parsley was very disappointing. Service was good though. Overall, for a Valentines Day dinner it wasn't what I had in mind.

Serving mustard in plastic packets is not a good idea likewise any condiment, naming a salad after the restaurant but not differentiating it means it's just a salad with a fancy name. Lastly with only one shared restroom available for the whole restaurant you could easily find yourself waiting in a queue.

The best meal my husband have had out in ages. Fantastic fillet steaks, cooked exactly as we requested. Starters, sides and desserts were all bursting with flavour, fresh and complementary. My allergies were taken seriously and catered for. Our waiter Stefano greeted us warmly and was friendly, knowledgeable, attentive but not overbearing, and professional. The restaurant was quiet and relaxing. Will definitely be back in future, especially for the excellent food and service.

I had the citrus rubbed salmon which was cooked just as I asked. I forget what I had as an appetizer but I remember it was very good. I had the Cranachan, a traditional Scottish desert with cream and raspberries. It was light and not to heavy, which was great for a dinner dessert. The service was excellent.

We visited the restaurant for our 10th wedding anniversary dinner based upon good previous reviews on tripadvisor The staff were pleasant and helpful, but the service was slow. The standard of the food in terms of both presentation and flavour was poor. There was a limited menu available because of covid, which was understandable. However, the full normal menu was on the website when the booking was made and even though we called ahead on the day, we were not made aware of the change to a limited menu, so we were immediately disappointed on arrival. The choices available were laughably basic and boring. It was our 10th wedding anniversary after all so you will understand how we felt. For example, the starter menu was basically a vegetable soup, or smoked salmon or a slab of what looked like supermarket pate served with some mixed salad and a couple of oatcakes. Basically nothing that required any preparation or cooking whatsoever, like something you might have on a picnic perhaps. Then we ordered chateaubriand for main course which per the website should have been cooked on a josper grill and served with hand cooked chips etc. What we actually got was a cold slab of poorly cooked pan fried meat with a couple of small mushrooms, some hard carrots with dried parsley on top, half an unripe tomato and some poorly cooked cold frozen chips. They did knock some money off the bill (the chateaubriand supplement) as they could see the disappointment in our faces and were apologetic about the standard. There were excuses made relating to covid, but we are aware from friend's and our own experiences, that many other restaurants in Edinburgh are operating just fine so if Blackwoods can't meet it's own standards it should remain closed until it can.

We usually get the sharer meal and are very pleased with the result. As well as the service and decor, the food was delicious Even though it’s expensive, it was worth it. Was quite disappointed with the steak I got today. I ordered a ribeye, but the steak I got was so thin and small it was more of a frying steak, the server apologised that he wasn’t sure if it was cooked right (medium) as it was so thin. Also disappointed that the salad and sauce and if I wanted chips was extra. I essentially ended up paying 27 for a frying steak, a pot of sauce and some lettuce. that I’d finished before the server asked if it was okay. The server said he needed to talk to the butcher and I hope they do, as serving steaks of that quality will loose customers quickly (the cheap ones from Tesco are better). Luckily im told my fiancé’s fish was nice as it was her birthday. Had she ordered a steak I would have been most upset with the result

Lovely place, very nice staff but the food was a big let down unfortunately. My steak was a decent size but was pretty tasteless. My Wife had fillet steak but it wasn't cooked medium as she requested and it was quite dry. On a plus point. The carrots and triple cooked chips were ok. Therefore unfortunately I have not added Blackwoods to our list of restaurants to revisit in the future.

Very poor. Overpriced. Sterile environment with little to now atmosphere. I had the salmon terrine. It was very dry. Served with dry bread and a few leaves without dressing. My husband had a red onion tart tartine that to be fair was tasty. But again dry salad. No dressing. Only a couple of leaves. Mains he has the sea bass. Very crisp skin served with rice. Far too salty. I had the fillet steak. Ordered medium rare. Was served well done and grey. Never send food back but I had to immediately return this. They were apologetic and made a second steak while husband had his meal. Disappointing. I had a glass of syrah which was good. Nothing special. He had a glass of sauv blanc. Bill was 82£. Very poor value. Would definitely not recommend.

What a wonderful restaurant (and boutique hotel). We dined here on the off-chance as reviews were good from previous diners and we wanted somewhere different to eat. A little off the beaten track but well worth the little walk (10 mins approximately from the centre of town). The service was outstanding, the food was delicious and presented beautifully and overall very good value for money. We had three courses (very unusual for us) as the menu was so good! It’s a big thumbs up from me.

The Restaurant was convenient. The staff were great. It was warm and inviting, lovely food and the best Truffle bread I have ever eaten! Truly delicious. Our only small niggle, if any, was the lack of Vegetarian choices. There were 3 vegetarians in our party and only one option. Having said that, all 3 thoroughly enjoyed the choice that there was. We might have dined there for our second night if there had been a couple of other choices.

Food just wasn&#039;t up to par. Hot breads as a starter should be lovely fresh warm bread and not bread which is not soft but toasted. The lamb rump was fatty and not tasty and no nice sauce / dressing. The side of vegetables never turned up. When we noted this on paying the response was one of apology but he&#039;d been busy fixing TV&#039;s (assume because this is a hotel and limited staff to do more than one thing).<br />Frankly that&#039;s not of interest to a diner and service and quality of food is key. Neither existed here.

Realmente excelente comida y servicio. Es el restaurante en un hotel pequeño y tranquilo cerca de la avenida principal de Stockbridge, pero vale la pena buscarlo. Saben una o dos cosas sobre la obtención de buenos productos escoceses locales y cómo prepararlos, cocinarlos y presentarlos. Este restaurante estaba tranquilo el viernes por la noche que visitamos, pero merece ser reservado. La fuente de mariscos, bistec y tabla de quesos eran geniales, y la selección de vinos era buena ya un precio razonable. Hemos cenado aquí en numerosas ocasiones y no nos ha decepcionado. La comida y el servicio se mantienen en un alto nivel. Me encanta el chateaubriand y normalmente puedes conseguir un trato. Normalmente recibimos un cupón de Groupon, pero descubrimos que si reserva a través de una mesa abierta, puede obtener el mismo trato. Eran 44 para el bistec y todos los adornos. We ordered a dozen oysters, which was brought to our table in a platter with a hole to help carry the platter. Unfortunately the ice, the oysters were sitting on, began to melt and a river of melted water poured over the table and onto my husband’s pants and arm. The waiter was very unapologetic and said, “yes I know it happens all the time”. <br /><br />The chateaubriand was raw. Again, our waiter was flippant and condescending. <br /><br />Couldn’t eat the steak. One of the most expensive meals of our vacation and one of the worst experience.<br /><br />The cheesecake was the worst cheesecake I have ever eaten anywhere.

My first problem was the lack of choice in wines by the glass....only 3 whites and 3 reds. I had mussels as a starter - which were lovely - but the wines weren’t what I would normally have chosen with seafood. <br />For my main I had a fillet steak - they recommend their Josper (?) grill - but instead of the medium rare I asked for, I got a medium to well done one. Again the wines were disappointing for steak.<br />I don’t normally have dessert but as this was a new place for me I decided to try the cheesecake, but this also was very disappointing. The whole thing was quite tasteless. <br />I dislike giving negative reviews but this meal did not reflect the high price I paid for it.

There was absolutely no atmosphere in this restaurant. We didn’t feel particularly welcome, maybe due to the fact this is the restaurant for the hotel next door and we were not guests there. That, however, should not make any difference. Waiting staff appeared very inexperienced and were very lack lustre and looked bored. The food was better than the ambiance, but nothing fantastic. Left there wishing we had booked elsewhere and feeling very disappointed.

Enjoyed my dinner here very much. A nice facility, I was the only diner at 6:30 when I entered. The dining manager could not have been nicer and he even arranged his colleage to give me a tour of a couple of the rooms at the hotel portion as I might want to stay there when I return to Edinburgh. The food was outstanding.

We visited Blackwood's Grill for a special occasion dinner and used a voucher they offer to try their chateaubriand beef. We've had the dish in a couple of places in the past and were delighted, so we were looking for a place in Edinburgh city centre that would live up to the expectation of it.

Para mí, el objetivo de un acuerdo es probar un menú en un área que normalmente no frecuentaría, el Cote De Beouf fue un corte excepcional de carne de res, la calidad era evidente ya que la grasa se derritió con la carne suculenta, sin masticar aquí. El servicio fue excelente, la atención al detalle y ni una sola vez me hicieron sentir como un cliente utilizando un trato. Debido al acuerdo, ampliamos nuestro presupuesto en vino y terminamos con la tabla de quesos para 2. Volveremos, aunque podemos comprar el trato nuevamente.

Received a gift of a voucher for chateaubriand for two with fizz and tried to book using the live chat, as I had a query I needed answered before I wanted to go ahead with the booking. This didn&#039;t seem to be working effectively and advised me to book a table through the the online booking site.<br />I received a call a day or two later following up on the enquiry.<br />I visited in a party of four adults and we were the only people in for dinner at 6pm on a Saturday night so there wasn&#039;t much atmosphere. That said, the new wallpaper, curtains and seating were very nice.<br />We elected to stick with just the chateaubriand and I&#039;m so glad we did. The sharing wooden platter which the main course for each couple arrived on was groaning with meat. When we have dined on the chateaubriand on two or three occasions previously it was been melt in the mouth and a generous portion. This time it was quantity over quality. There was twice as much meat as was required but the quality was not as nice as we had had previously -so much so, we took the remainder of the meat home-enough for another meal. <br />The parsnips, carrots and green beans were overlooked. The chips were tasty but lacking in quantity. The tomatoes on the vine were tasty. Both sauces were tasty too.<br />The waiting staff were friendly but the younger man seemed to be suffering with nerves and was very shaky-which he acknowledged.<br />Overall, less impressive than on previous visits

Was 20 minutes before anyone even showed us a drinks menu, in the end I had to go up and ask myself. One waiter seemed to be actively avoiding eye contact when we tried to get his attention. The waiter that served us eventually was at least then good and the meal was ok.

I went there to find out. Hamburger good but not exceptional. A bit pricey for just a medium sized burger (£7.95). However, the meat and bread are of good quality. Very little room to eat seated inside, especially if there are many of you.
