Very disappointed with our experience. Very slow service, unable to order bacon and egg sandwiches as they stop serving them at 12.30 and we were 10 mins late. I explained that I’d joined the queue at 12.20 but was told I’d need to order something else. I then had to leave the queue to speak to my family and rejoin it again! I ordered soup and scones to then be told that they didn’t do soup….. despite it being on their menu, so had to start all over again! Food was also expensive for what it was. Very frustrating experience, place was busy but noisy with people standing around waiting for tables, quite off-putting having people constantly looking to see if you’ve finished. Counter staff were friendly

Enjoyed a lovely lunch in a hidden gem in Northumberland, on our way to Scotland. A place where a lot of thought has gone into the menus and interior design of the café. Typical lunch menu including quiches, sandwiches, salads, plus many other options. Dishes suitable for many dietary needs, including gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan. Delicious coffee also. Well worth a visit.

Decent setting is a plus The outdoor space is nice no fuss The time in line is way to long The service slow, just on and on The food is average and prices high The toasties prices in the sky The special pies can be quite good But usually sold out so only other food Not sure why it takes so long To serve a person cake or scone Its quite a decent place to stay But you need to plan for half a day

I feel compelled to write a review and I’m sorry it’s a negative one. The cost of this place is outrageous. A bacon 🥓 bun with a poached egg is £9. A bacon bun alone is £6 but to add egg, for which they sell for half a dozen at £2.45, is an additional £3! The filter coffee was cold. I would never return. There are so many nicer cafes in the proximity of near by Ponteland that offer better value for money.

The service is incredibly slow. The coffee machine seems really slow too, so can be in the queue for 15 min Corned beef pie is always in the board as the special but they never have any left. I’ve tried the place at least 8 times when passing by and every time there’s no pie left but always still chalked on the board. Never understand why they can’t just make an extra corned beef pie or two if it’s that popular.. Its the only cafe around there so captive audience but bit overpriced for the basic foods

Really disappointed to be writing this review as I wanted to like this place and have been to the other coffee shop at Milkhope, which while doesn’t have as picturesque an outdoor area, is much more efficient in terms of service. As my sisters and I had our dogs with us, we had to sit outside (seeing how busy it was inside this was for the best! Thanks to mothers with massive pushchairs blocking ALL the walkways this would have been very stressful - still amazed how dogs are banned but screaming children who are left to run riot, get their sticky spitty fingers everywhere and go to the toilet unaccompanied pissing all over the seat are allowed here). Sadly there was more children outside as their parents also had dogs, and boy did those kids scream! Not a relaxing experience when our perfectly behaved dogs aren’t making a peep. We went in to see menus but none were visible anywhere, we had to take pictures of the board and go back outside to show my other sister what was on offer. As the jacket pots weren’t on the main board we didn’t think they did them - it’s only when your actually in the queue at the front near the till you realise yes they do them, they have a small sign at the front of the queue hidden from plain sight. Would be better placed where new customers can actually see it when there is a busy queue. We also realised after placing order and paying that they do have menus, they are just tucked away in a hidden place so you can see when you enter the cafe and are looking around for them. No staff to ask as the 2 behind counter are dealing with customers and nobody else around. I ordered 2 pots of tea, got back to table outside and realised only given 1 small jug of milk, so no jug for 2nd pot. Went back in, got it, sat back down. Once we had got the dogs settled with water we went to drink our tea - my sister then realised we were only given one pot of tea despite paying for 2. I thought at first maybe I was mistaken as we had only been given 1 jug of milk and 1 pot of tea, but no we had definitely been charged for 2 and we had been given 2 cups/saucers. The actual process at the till because 2 young staff were trying to serve 2 customers across each other was very confusing and they have probably got themselves confused, because I found it a very hectic way for service and with all the kids screaming it was bloody stressful. Then the wasps came, attracted by the jam from our scones, then the wind got up while we were sat and the rain started. Just with everything together it was probably the least enjoyable lunch experience I have ever had.

We ordered 3 coffees, a cheese scone and an almond and lemon slice. It's always a busy place so finding a table was a bit difficult and no one in a hurry to give up a table even for a 92 year old! Service was a bit slow and inexperienced, although friendly enough. The menu options are OK but a bit dull. Prices OK for the various offerings. Unfortunately, the coffees were dreadful. Not sure if staff hadn't been trained up properly but I've rarely had such a bitter, over hot flat white and the americano was strong enough to stand a teaspoon in. Anyway, we will probably return at some point because it's in a handy location if you're heading out the countryside. Bring back the florentines, they were great!

Visited with parents after a run out in the car, parking was limited, clearly a popular haunt with locals out on their cycle rides, plenty of outside seating if the weather persists & overflow seating in the barn next door, I really appreciate it’s difficult for small businesses at this time but think the entry would be better as the exit & vice versa as by the time you walk in & wait to be served or seated you’re blocking the door for the next person, service was a bit sporadic, need to focus on specific tasks as some customers walked out as they were overlooked service. Coffee was ok but not hot!

To me, if they can offer to sell you a full jar as they have none available surely they could open a jar and place in little pots for customers??Only one toilet available for the whole coffee shop and the overflow building they are using so as I had to queue in a long queue as cafe was very busy, my coffee was cold by the time I got back to my table.I totally understand that they are doing the best they can given the situation but they do need to look at the toilet situation if they allowing As many customers in at any given time.

After looking at the reviews my wife and i decided to call in on our way to Bolam Lake (Sat 24th Sep). Car park was busy, but we managed to get parked. Finding a seat was no problem but it was starting to fill up as you would expect for midday. I ordered a bacon roll (£5) and my wife ordered poached eggs with fresh salmon (£7.50). I also ordered a Latte. For my sins i wish i had taken a photo as to what turned up on our plates. For me, a brown bun with 2 slices of bacon. That was it, no butter, no side salad, no thought gone into prep. For my wife, 2 slices of under done toast, to the point that 90% of it was white, 2 poached eggs and a slice of fresh salmon on the side. Again, no side salad, no sauce (poor mans Eggs Royale). No thought about the prep. Latte was flat and cold. This was the same for the couple on the next table, who had a sip of their coffee and then left. I would have gone up to the counter and said something, but lucky or unlucky about 20 cyclists arrived and formed a queue between both rooms and we weren't prepared to wait. Maybe in a couple of months or years it might improve.

Stopping here on the way north (it is just off the A696) or in the area during the day provides a very pleasant break. A wide variety of great quality food for a full lunch or a snack exists. Different from the normal hot food and sandwiches are prepared while you wait. Cakes and scones which are baked in house are varied, some unusual, but all delicious. The country location means the surroundings are peaceful and the building is a tasteful conversion. It is ideal on a fine day to sit outside on one of the many outside tables to take in the fine country views while enjoying the excellent food.Of course as it is good it can be busy at peak times.

Been here several times over the years and never fails to impress. Beautiful home made food - cakes, scones, quiches, salads - you name it, all served by friendly welcoming staff. Lovely atmosphere in what was an old blacksmith's forge, and on a chilly day the two wood burning stoves provide plenty of warmth. The only downside is that if you get the timing wrong it will be packed with lycra wearing cyclists and you won't get a seat. Avoid late Sunday morning. Otherwise a real treat - you won't be disappointed.

Excellent food and brilliant view. However, I often visit both this coffee shop and the one at Blagdon. The Belsay coffee shop often forgets to wipe down the tables when dishes have been removed. In addition, for the past 5-6 years, every summer I have had occasion to tell staff that flies are crawling over the uncovered pies on the serving counter. It is basic food hygiene to put systems in place to protect food from contamination. Yes, there is a fly chain at the back door and no doubt electronic fly killers insitu but none of the staff seem at all bothered that the flies they keep wafting away from their face have also been having a jolly old time vomiting and fouling on the food they are crawling on. It only takes a few seconds for a fly to leave their calling card on food, not to mention what they may have been crawling on outside. There is enough bacteria on one leg to cause serious illness. This makes me wonder if staff are properly trained, and sufficiently supervised to know how to put safe practices into operation. I would like to see the food kept covered - staff cannot be constantly standing guard to keep the flies off and you can bet your bottom dollar they will land when you turn your back.

We always call here en route to Scotland. The coffee is good, a filter coffee gets a free refill. SThis time we had the crunchy bar and cranberry slice and two roulades. My son is gluten free with a nut allergy so strawberry meringue roulade was great for him. Always a good place to stop when travelling. Home cooked food - cake, lunch, soup etc.

Called in here again around lunchtime on Monday, place was very busy, justifiably so as it turned out from our experience. Tried their cheese and ham toasties, ham was home cooked and the cheese had a good strong flavour, nicely presented and served with crisps and salad. Coffee and tea were both hot, and not at instantly drinkable temperature. Definitely NOT a prepacked tasteless offering from elsewhere. Not the cheapest in the world, but left feeling we had enjoyed a good lunchtime offering. Oh the service was first class too. Place deserves to succeed based on our experience.

I live in Ponteland 6 miles from Belsay and never knew there was a cafe there until today. I had been to the hospital and my daughter thought it would be nice to have a coffee at a cafe instead of going straight home and she took me to the Blacksmiths Cafe. It's gorgeous, 2 lovely big rooms both with stoves. We sat next to the stove and it was gorgeous. We had our scones and coffee I had the cheese scone which was delicious and my daughter currant one with jam and hers was delicious as well. The staff were lovely and friendly and it got so busy, obviously well known and popular. Next time I will go and have a proper meal there was so much choice

It is a busy little place and on a Sunday morning you may struggle to get a seat as loads of cyclists use it, which is great for the business and the atmosphere. Log burners, decent food, we prefer it to the Blagdon one, personal taste I guess.

Called in on a Saturday lunchtime with my family, party of 5 inc granddaughter. Paninis, and baked potatoes, a cold day so hot beverages most welcomed. Fast service at the counter, friendly staff, £30 bill, good value, tasty food, highly recommended. Might get very busy at peak times but seating outside if sunny is an option.

Played today, Mon 26th August, Great layout, but sadly the greens are diseased and awful, and the tee boxes are terrible, very expensive bar, and no food being served, even though there was a competition on, and the bar was busy, Sadly one to miss in the future.

We visited Hexham yesterday and found this café in the Market Place, after a lovely River Tyne walk. It was quite busy at 1pm but we didn't have to wait long for our table. The girls made us feel very welcome and worked so hard while we were there clearing tables and getting everyone seated as soon as possible. My husband had a bacon sarnie and I had a ham and mushroom omelette which was so light and fluffy, delicious. Coffees were great too. Plenty of choice on the menu and great prices. Doggy friendly too with a treat for pooch 🐾

What a welcoming, hospitable place. If you ever need cheering up, this is the place to go. We were made welcome immediately, and tony the owner had us in stiches from the start. Everyone there were so friendly, and what had started as an intended short visit, led to us staying to closing. Met some brilliant characters, who all just made our day. Dog friendly too, which was an added bonus to us. Can't recommend enough.
