I visited with a band of bellringers on Saturday 19 August. It was a warm sunny day and after our efforts we were in need of sustenance! First, the pub sold proper cider from Sandford Orchards. Always a good sign. There were about 16 of us, and we had pre-ordered food. The food came out fresh and at the same time. My Caesar salad was excellent. I have had several disappointing Caesar salads recently at other venues. The staff could not have been more helpful and pleasant. I’d intended to be ‘heathy’ and refuse dessert. However, the landlady’s description of the dessert choices made many mouths water including my own, and the roulade was a must have. It was also excellent. The pub is traditional and offers a superb welcome. Well done and thank you. I couid not fault a thing. Highly recommended.

What a great find! We were staying at a local camp site and we were looking for a place to watch the World Cup final, we called the day before to ask if they would be showing the football, and with 25 of us coming they were so accommodating, we arrived they remembered we were coming, made us feel welcomed showed us we’re we could watch it as there was the bar and a lovely outside area, the staff helped move chairs, helped carry drinks out. I personally didn’t have food but family members did and they mentioned the price was great value for the food they had!

We stayed at Yew Tree Cottage which is a 2 bed accommodation run by the pubs owners and it was amazing, great quality accommodation, dog friendly with a secure garden and right next to the pub! We had a relaxed stay in this lovely village and ate in the pub on a couple of occasions, great food, staff and locals all made this a lovely experience. It was also a great base to explore Devon and we would definitely go back!! Thanks to Susie, Alan and Tadgh for a great stay!!

This has to be the best pub we've come to in many years. Village pub in the middle of Plymtree, filled with locals who were just as friendly as the staff were and told us all about the local history and village gossip. The menu selection is phenomenal, it's almost frustrating that you can't try everything at once. When the food came out we were blown away by the generosity of the portions. Everything was perfect, could not fault a thing. If you still manage to have room for desserts, their honeycomb crunch cheesecake might be the best cheesecake in Devon...

Ever so friendly staff but our food was a big disappointment: claggy and strangely sweet seafood pasta drowned in creamy sauce, overcooked steak, limp salad with gloopy dressing out of a bottle... As a food blogger, I normally would have images but this was family time and I got to chill with my much needed glass of cold crisp wine in my favourite type of thin glass. The boys went and played a game of pool post ordering which was so nice for me and of the setting. We we weren't rushed, menu fully explained and arrived in good portion sizes plus anything we needed was not an issue. My son's were catered for in their pudding choices, they played cards and enjoyed the fresh good food. It was a last minute treat and ticked all our boxes, definately will upkeep such visits as long they offer such hospitality. We thanked the staff including chef as we bid our farewells as caught a brief fireside moment. Just how country pubs should be and so nice to have children in mind plus truly happy to. Visiting for the first time, we had an absolutely perfect evening. We were a group of 6 (2 adults, 4 teenagers) travelling from north to south Devon, and stopped her for an evening meal. As soon as we walked in we knew we had arrived at a proper pub, with friendly locals at the bar and a welcoming barmaid (who turned out to be one half of the very friendly wife/husband owners). We had reserved a table (there's not many inside but there's a garden too). Portions are very generous and suited us fine after a day on the beach. The rump steak was very tasty, one of the best I've had. The venison pie was a proper shortcrust pie, with excellent gravy. The chips and onion rings were to die for - I'd challenge anyone to find better anywhere. The burger was perfect, very good quality in a great bun again with excellent chips and salad. Three of us had the special Texas BBq brisket beef which was slow-cooked, juicy and had a wonderful smoky spicy sauce. We were full, but the dessert (OK, let's be clear, we're talking puddings) menu just looked too good to ignore. I had the rhubarb crumble and custard - and oh boy, was that a great choice - mind you it would probably feed three quite adequately! We also had the chocolate brownie, and the most enormous sundae you could imagine (that alone kept three teenagers happy). Also a coffee floater (Irish coffee), again, perfect.

The beef is sourced from a farm a couple of miles away and it was tender, and cooked to perfection. This is not a posh boutique pub but a comfortable village pub run by welcoming publicans. We visited here with our two young children for dinner at 6pm on a Wednesday night. Such a friendly atmosphere and we were made to feel very welcome with toys available for the children to discover- the trains were a big hit!Food was beautiful and my venison pie was yummy. My son loved the fact that dogs were coming in with their owners for doggie treats.

Decided to visit here after reading the good reviews on trip advisor. The reviews are accurate and the food here is really good. Good choice on the menu and the owners explain it to you and make recommendations. It's all freshly cooked so variations (eg vegetarian) are possible. In fact the owner is vegetarian so it's nice to see plenty of choices on the menu. The pub is charming inside, old, traditional and used by the locals. If it's just one small negative, it was a bit chilly inside but the weather has been up and down lately, and they did their best with the log fire going and a small fan heater. This won't put us off visiting again though.

Staying locally at a Devon Farms listed B&B, Newcourt Barton, in Langford near Cullompton, our hostess recommended 3 local pub/restaurants in her welcome pack. We chose the Blacksmiths Arms at nearby Plymtree as the menu looked well planned and interesting and yet it was unpretentious - and still a nice night out in a local pub.It felt absolutely right from the minute we walked through the door: Susie runs the bar and Alan is the chef. What a combination!! None of the 'you're not local / neutral hello' routine - Susie was outgoing, friendly, utterly hospitable and thoroughly welcoming - and the evening just kept getting better. Friendly chat with equally warm locals (and their dogs!) set the scene - ably assisted by a log-burning stove and comfy sofas. The food is 4 star - so much better than 'pub grub' - and the wine list, although fairly short, offers some very good quality house wines at a fair price. In short - an unexpectedly high quality, fun and very good evening in the hands of a lovely couple. Thank you both !!And the 'added value' for sheer entertainment - their gorgeous, massive and utterly adorable Leonberger 4-year old dog .... Google the breed and then add 2 gallons of sloppiness and you're getting close! We'll be back!

Many reviews refer to "the locals". I am one of those. I do not live in Plymtree but live a short drive from several pubs. My family and I always gravitate here without question. We are so fortunate. So many people would love a pub like this. Alan and Suzie are totally in tune with village life. They are at the heart of the village. They are good at their business but also generous in their support for village organisations and activities. They work very hard and deserve a good return, as well as their own personal time. Delicious food, served exactly as you ask; Alan even offers to cook something not on his menu, if he has it! Beer always unbeatable. Love the new flooring.

My friends and I have visited this village pub several times in the past few years. The owners, staff and locals are very welcoming, it has a great atmosphere - which means we always stay longer than planned. On this occasion a few weeks ago we visited for Sunday Lunch, my veggie friend had a nut roast, I had beef and pork Roast and my two other friends chose dishes from the specials board. Food was delicious and plentiful, there was a good selection of Ales (Otter Amber and Atlantic were on at the time) and they also have a good wine list. Thank you we will be back.

We were visiting the UK from France and had researched somewhere to meet friends whilst there. The website said that the pub was open on Tuesdays, but unfortunately, after travelling for more than an hour we discovered on arrival that it was closed! We were directed to another pub nearby, which actually turned out to be excellent. Next time we are in the area we will be returning there instead. We now notice that the pub has a new website with the correct opening hours - what a coincidence!
