Blacks in Lancaster

Sadly what was one of the best fish and chip shops in the area is under new management and is now a Chinese takeaway and Chippy. I can't comment on the quality of the Chinese food but the fish and chips are now poor. The fish was thin and had more of a thin dusting of flour rather than batter. There was an overall twang to the taste I couldn't quite place, it wasn't off, just not right. The chips were average. There are much better options within a few miles. Extra star as the serving staff were good.

This excellent traditional fish and chip shop is now also an excellent chinese takeaway. We visited as a walk in ( although telephone orders are very welcome on 01524812225.) and were extremely happy with the speed of service, Our 7 or 8 choices were, amazingly, ready in 11 minutes ( how on earth ? ) the food was, obviously, piping hot and very tasty, everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food. What a fantastic addition and bonus for the village and surrounding area.

Worse fish and chips I've ever had in my life. Fish dry and tasteless, chips chunky pale and dry. A very unpleasant taste, most of it went in the bin. What a waste of £18.60. How this chippy has won awards is a miracle, it must of belonged to someone else when it did. Well at least I know never to go again. 😡

I went there looking for tea wanted fish & chips twice big sign on the window saying CASH ONLY rediculous only had my card I paid by card at same place 2 weeks ago I was very disappointed when cash will be going out of circulation soon I’m sure they loose lots of customers cos of this I shall not be going anymore

Sorry, but I know this place has had awards but the award must of been in something else, ....defo not tasty food. The chips were soggy and very tasteless, I asked for curry sauce, huh!!! May as well av not, bothered it was non existence 😕 I had to make some home made curry sauce when I got home, to compensate!! And as for the pie, it was supposed to be Hollands but I don't think 🤔 it was, it was smaller than a Hollands pie the pastry was so dry I had to dismantle the outer crust and eat the rest of it. The only reason I ate it was cause I'd had a small brekie as I knew i was going across the road to get my dinner, so for those of you who are reading this unless you WANT to eat tastless food then blacks ⚫️ is the place to be..... I was fuming I had to give 1 star 🌟 in order to give a review otherwise it would of been a zero mark....... So all in all a wasted Journey.... Never will I return.:( !!!!!

Food cooked fresh but chip portions poor, to be fair it was fortunate as chips weren’t great any way. Pie wqs rock hard too. Disappointing as it was recommended too

Do you like your chips cooked? No they weren’t! Do you like a fish choice like other than cod? No sorry just cod!! I like my chips cooked; you know break a chip open and its not still uncooked in the centre these were so uncooked as to be plainly anaemic in colour. Simply put when we mentioned a takeaway next time We wanted one and the first comments were: “NOT BLACKS’S CHIPS!!!”

Was nervous about going to a chippy since they've re opened. Didn't want to be stuck in a queue with ignorant people. Blacks have organised this perfectly. You order from a window that has been created at the front door. Contactless payment only. Then you are give a device which is sanitised between use, so you can wait in your car until your order is ready, then collect contactless again from a side door. Felt safe through the whole process and the food was amazing ☺

They will Only take card payment, I traveled just over 7 miles to go to this chippy for lunch, only to be refused service because I only had cash. I used to go a couple of times a month before lockdown, I won’t be going again my lunch hour is a valuable time for me and this chippy decided they no longer want my business

This is our nearest chippy and we have been going there for several years. The quality is consistently high and the service efficient and friendly.

We live in the town centre of Lancaster and surrounded by fish&chips shops as well as many other takeaways. Last year we went out for a drive in the van and came across Blacks, since we found them we only go there. Portions and quality are 1st class.

Not long having moved into the area we followed the road signs through Halton to Blacks. The staff were upbeat and friendly and the food looked delicious. We waited whilst our 2 portions of fish and chips were cooked to order, added a portion of mushy peas and 2 pots of homemade tartar sauce. We stopped at a local beauty spot to eat our supper and chat. It was absolutely delicious, crispy light batter, soft flaky white fish, tasty chips, well seasoned mushy peas and extremely tasty tartar sauce. What a treat. Perfect portion size to be filling but not over facing. We will definitely be back, it was a very lovely treat.

To say the prices range from £4-10 is just not true. You’re looking at close to £10 for just fish and chips, which doesn’t scream value for money when you can count the number of chips you get on two hands. Although the produce is a good quality the portion sizes are far, far too small. This used to be a great local chip shop that appreciated the local residents but it’s slowly becoming obvious this isn’t the case.

After leaving a review about the chippy being poor last October .I returned a few times since and safe to say...The meal was incredibly tasty,good portion size and value for money on each visit.Wonderful food! My previous review must have been a one off-bad day.

it cost over £6.50 for fish and chips, i got little to no chips and asked for more, shared a chip with mates, there be non left! Not the best quality. Went afterwards to Bowerham chippy, and got loads of chips for the price. not again.

Since living in Halton I've eaten a few time here and it's very good. The staff are very very polite and always smile they make you feel welcome and part of the family so to speak making you want to go again just for the service. As for the food you can't really go wrong tbh they have some good specials on and my favourite is the salt and pepper squid. They give you loads of information on the potatoes they use and where they're from to the fish and where it was caught and by who which is fantastic if you want that information. Now they have won an award it just goes to show they moving up. I hope they continue to do well and recommend this chippy to all.

Have always had good food here. Special for season was a large pigs in blanket, which I had with chips. Excellent once again.

Ordered a large portion of chips to go with our tea at a cost of £2.60. When I opened the container l was amazed at the size of the portion I had been given, very small for a large chips and very poor value for money. This is not the first time I’ve had small portions from here so won’t use again.

Terrible value for money incredibly small portions.I ordered the sweet and sour special which was £4 and promoted outside the shop.I have included a picture,not usually one to complain but it really was very poor.when the food was taken out of the container didn’t even fill a small plate.i really don’t eat a lot (I am 5’3)and I had to go and get something else to eat afterwards.Incredibly dissatisfying and disappointing.

We have been getting our fish and chips from Blacks for a while now despite being a 30 minute round trip, the fish and chips are excellent, especially the fish which is hard to beat always a friendly and helpful service even advising if taking the fish and chips home don't put the salt and vinegar on until you get home as they don't go soggy and are still in perfect condition.

We first came across this chippy whilst living in Hilton for 7months, fantastic fish and chips cooked to order as you go or even better phone through and they are ready to pick up, really friendly staff, lots of info to tell you where they're fish was caught and by whom, home made tartar sauce lovely taste. So now travelling from the next village as the fish and chips are so worth it, as we've moved back to our village.

The fish and chips are amazing they are served in these odd little boxes which prevent moisture build up which makes for an excellent take away!

As a local we use blacks for the odd chippy. We wouldn't go anywhere else now, it's fantastic and the size of the fish is brilliant! A well done to all involved.

We had been advised to try Blacks, my wife ordered fish with peas for me and fish chips and peas for her. We took the food home and the grease that had burnt through the box and pooled in the bottom of the bag. The fish had been cooked that long it was dry and unedible. We both binned the fish I tried the chips but they were the other extreme and barely cooked.Won't be returning going back to Garstang.

We popped over as our local was closed. Throughly enjoyed their fish and chips and can see how they won such a prestigious award - totally delicious.

Cooked fresh, to order the food was superb. Some of the finest fish and chips I have ever tried. I would not hesitate to recommend this take away. If you are nearby, definitely check it out.

Your food will be cooked to order, this eliminates waste but can mean a short wait. Compensated by very tasty fish and chips served by delightful staff.

Cuando regresamos a Laverick Hall Caravan park en febrero una vez más nos volvimos a llevar y una vez más no nos ha decepcionado por la calidad de la comida. Patatas fritas y salsa maltratada black pudding de nuevo absolutamente tremenda.

Originally a scouser & chippy fan I've a high threshold and opinion of what makes a good chippy. First time I'd been there and it definitely didn't disappoint. Well worth the visit and I'll definitely be returning.

I use TA a lot so know that for every rave review I'll find one at the opposite end of the spectrum. However I would like to explain that we tried Black's when they first opened, have been back many times since then (in fact we even have friends who have visited to have fish and chips as their meal!) and have never had anything other than perfectly cooked fish (love the light batter) and crispy. fluffy chips, irrespective of who was frying. In our opinion their recent award was deserved.

I have been to this chippy several times now both with family and my partner! The portion sizes are ridiculous - every time you visit the amount of chips change! The portion sizes most defiantly are not consistent especially for the prices! Not only that but the chips seem to always been undercooked and raw! (inedible!) the last two times I have thrown the food away. After winning the most recent award I thought this had obviously changed! Not only that but the gravy was a lumpy-jelly like substance...... Defiantly not worth the money, for a nice chippy meal I'd recommend elsewhere. Unfortunately I will not be returning again!

Not well located for anyone travelling up or down the M6 and wanting a quick fix (Halton is physically close but a very tortuous detour from either junction!), so the chances are you'll only be using this establishment if you're a local...We were certainly very happy with the offer and would be pleased to have Blacks as our neighbourhood chippie. The shop has been fitted out with cleanliness in mind, having full-height stainless steel cladding to the walls, and we particularly liked the blackboard with details of the current catch and any special offers (such as whitebait, albeit sold out by the time we got there!). The fish is cooked to order and served in polystyrene containers, which isn't very environmentally conscious but a big advantage if one wishes to eat in the car as we were!

We have used this fish shop for a while and it seems to be either very good or bad. We have realised the cook uses timers at all times and so wish he wouldn't and just go by look and feel as potatoes vary so much with the seasons, we have yet to attend to receive crispy beautiful chips......they are always limp and soggy .Last week I asked for my scampi to be a little bit more cooked than usual, a purely personal taste. The male cooking raised his eyebrows to the girl taking the money as if to say i shouldn't have asked....at that point i decided we would stick with Hodgsons in Lancaster even though its a couple of miles further......very disappointed

Great fish and chips always freshly cooked. Good quality and reasonably priced.Do a variety of specials as well as pitzas. Friendly staff. Well worth a visit.

Great tasting, fresh food cooked to order. Excellent service, very clean and great selection of meals. We passed through the village on a recent trip and will certainly come back again and again. The best Chippy in the area as far as we're concered.

I had heard lots of great reviews from friends and family about 'Black's' so I thought I would give it a try. Upon arrival I was welcomed warmly and my order was taken, fish & chips x 2, the service was efficient and very polite. The shop was busy but I never felt rushed. The food was absolutely delicious, fresh fish covered in a lovely light batter and chips that were crispy on the outside and soft & fluffy on the inside, exactly as chip shop Fish & Chips should be!This is our new favourite Fish & Chip shop, can't wait for our next visit!

You can't beat a lovely walk through the Lune Valley followed by perfectly cooked fish and chips at Blacks in Halton. We have been many times, the staff are always friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend.

I was here for ages on this review because I couldn't find anything bad about it! So in the end I gave up and I just loved this place. So this is one of (or just the) best place(s) in the Lune Valley. This is one of my personal favourites. Would definitely recommend this place!

When I'm in the area I make a point of going out of my way to have some of Black's fish and chips. Friendly service, reasonable prices and, most importantly, the food, while simple British fare, is simply awesome!

I don't have fish and chips very often, but when I do I won't visit anywhere but Black's! Delicious fish and chips! And you can always tell the ingredients are fresh and top quality. It's a must from me!

Drove over from Morecambe especially, for a family takeaway. We were very impressed with the quality of the food, cooked perfectly and friendly service. We'll be back again!

The family all chose something different to eat and everyone thought the food was extremely tasty and well cooked. If i lived locally I would definitely become a regular customer as I would like to sample more from their menu.

Very nice food, Fish and chips are done just how I like them and the the kids love the fish goujons, friendly staff and clean looking premises inside and out.

Called in once when in the area for business. Had sausage and chips and was impressed with the large portion of chips as well as a perfectly cooked jumbo sausage.I will definitely be calling back again when in the area again, I might even spoil the wife and make a special trip there.

This place looks good, but it isn't - the chips come out yellow, not crispy and soggy. The staff are good but could do with more. Fish is haddock but more like a fish finger rather than a large fresh piece of fish which I did expect with the money I spent. Could do with double the amount. Surprised that they had a queue out of the door as they are certainly nothing special. Awful... some serious improvement needed!

Staff very helpful and the shop was clean and bright. The fish was delicious and the chips were chunky and crisp.My husband had a ham and mushroom pizza and it was good value for money as well as tasty

Been here many times both when I lived In Halton and several times since moving, the place is dirty and the staffs customer skills are appalling, considering it's a nice small town this is not a community business at all, won't be returning and will make sure the family I have In the area don't return either.

9/12/15 floods in halton we lost electricity,the electricity company provided free warm food and drink for all people in village that had been unfortunate to be flooded or stranded in the village with no power,BLACKS CHIPPY told the mobile kitchen to leave the village as it was damaging his business,at a time like this hes thinking of money when most of halton and lancaster are coming together for those in need....disgusting

Disgusting.floods in halton no electricity,people in need the electricity company provided free mobile kitchen warm food and drink for residents in need at this bad time,blacks complained about the kitchen and asked it to leave the village as people wouldnt come to him if free food was available,everyone was pulling together apart from the money grabbing owner.....disgusting

Food is nice but small portions half the the portion of chips you get any where else and the smallest amount of curry or gravy on top.

Tried Blacks for a pizza last night.Have had fish and chips which have been ok so decided to try the pizza. What a mistake!Ordered two 9 inch pizza's. The first was ham, cheese, no tomato, the second was a pepperoni pizza with a request for a little garlic.Both pizza's arrived under cooked, the base was thin but soggy, the toppings were minimal and generally the pizza did not appear to be value for money at £4.00 each. This was made worse by being ripped off to the tune of an extra 50p for the little bit of requested garlic (they didn't knock money off for not having the tomato on one of the pizza's!). Other local pizza places add garlic or chilli on request for free!Would I order pizza from Blacks again?Not a chance.Would I go back for the ok fish and chips?Not after the garlic rip off.Just because we live out of town it feels like they think we can be ripped off, well, others deliver pizza of a much better standard for the same if not less (with free garlic).

since opening we have been here quite a few times, all the food is freshly prepared in front of you, at busy times there is a bit of a wait but the food is worth waiting for. telephone orders are highly recommended. will be going back some time soon in the future!!!!!
