Black Swan in Mid Sussex

Not exactly a fantastic experience. Had to chase staff up to serve us (twice). Food was average and was late arriving. Even had to go up and ask for bill. However staff were friendly and I think there were issues in the kitchen.

Had a lovely evening. Table booked for 10. Was a Saturday night so very busy . However the staff were fabulous, friendly and attentive, yes we had to wait a while for the drinks but they were very busy. The food came quickly and was very tasty. Would definitely return

Bar service very slow, serve people that come up after you before you, ignore you when you are waiting very poor indeed, to busy putting classes away to serve people

We came to the Black Swan having passed it by, many times whilst travelling to a favourite dog walking area. We kept saying we must go there for a meal some time. Well today we did, and will definitely be returning. The service was excellent as was the meal, we had a Valentine Special, haunch of venison.

Lovely dinner and great service. Only reasons for 3 star review is that firstly, a 12.5% tip is automatically added.. I like to decide what tip I feel is deserved, not have it decided for me! And secondly, the menu (Valentines menu) was incredibly basic which was a shame. I wouldn’t return simply due to the tip issue, I find that shocking.

Good menu, superb service. The Camembert was deliciously runny. The chicken Kiev was high in calories but tasty.

I have been dining at this restaurant for many years and have had mixed experiences.Unfortunately today wasn’t a great lunch purely because we didn’t actually get to eat until 1 hour 45 minutes after sitting down! The staff were excellent polite and helpful but it was clear that they were understaffed and unable to cope with the demands of a full restaurant. There was only one overworked barman for the entire restaurant who was unable to get the drinks to customer within a reasonable timeframe which was not his fault at all. The food when it eventually arrived was delicious and of very good quality. The ambiance was warm and inviting. I don’t think I’ll book here again as there are many more restaurants locally who serve equally delicious food far quicker. There were only two of us eating today so I dread to think how long larger tables of people had to wait! Such a shame as the restaurant could be much better than my experience today.

Returned yesterday for a great lunch with my partner. Lots of people doing the same, busy bar showing six nations and nice atmosphere. Thank you, see you again soon.

We are a pub. We don’t do Guinness. We don’t do nuts. We don’t clear tables. I haven’t been to the Black Swan for just over a year. But won’t be rushing back. When I walked in past the smokers at the front of the pub, almost every table had old food and spent glasses on them. I asked for a Guinness. We don’t do Guinness. Or Murphy’s. Or Beamish. But there is an economy own brand alternative. No thanks. I’ll have a lager. Can I have some dry roasted nuts. We don’t do dry roasted. Or any nuts. We are a Guinness and nut free pub. I had my lager and left. The staff were lovely. But it seems the owners want to decide what clients want and don’t want. All a bit odd.

Friendly welcome and service; food was yummy. V quiet but then again, it was a Monday lunch time so never going to be heaving with people

Great venue, nice atmosphere (albeit quiet for a Saturday night). Burgers with cheese and bacon had a strange fishy taste. Staff conferred with chef who said no cross contamination. One of our party couldn’t eat their burger because of this issue. No offer to change it. Otherwise service was no worse/no better than usual, service charge added without any discretion to pay it. Greeted by lovely friendly staff who seated us then explained all the food specials and options with us and brought us some water.They gave us plenty of time to look at the menus but we're on hand nearby to take our order as soon as we were ready. All the food came out together and it was delicious. The staff were attentitive throughout without being overbearing. Overall we had great food and great service from lovely knowledgeable, friendly and polite staff.

The vegan sunday roast was overall disappointing - the roast itself was very tastey, the pastry was lovely, but I do get a bit fed up when there is so little protein in a meal, when essentially it is veg with veg, and its a shame when nuts or pulses can easily be added. The roast potatoes were a bit dry, inside and out, and the yorkship pudding (we are vegetarian not vegan, so could have them) were huge but a bit biscuit-like - smaller and not so thin would have been better. The carrots were delicious however. Its not cheap, and then to have to pay £3.50 for an extra (very small jug of gravy) was a bit insulting really. Service was lovely however, really good and its a nice place. Mum liked her roast beef, although also though the roasties were a bit dry.

This pub is a local gem. We’ve dined a few times whilst visiting RHS Wisley. Sadly, this is the first time we’ve had to send one our meals back to the kitchen. The staff were straight on to putting everything right but the replacement was just as inedible. Could be down to choice but disappointingly so much oil dressing. The staff and manager Nathan handle the situation well.

We were celebrating a friend’s 60th birthday. After a lovely walk at Wisley we were ready for our lunch and we’re not expecting to wait the best part of an hour before being served! The food was not brilliant and portions very small. Desert was burnt and to top it all a very large service charge of £25 was added without our consent. We did not want to ruin the occasion by complaining but will not be returning in a hurry. Such a shame 😥

The roast beef was average. The meat was cut too thickly as it wasn’t the leanest the carrots and roast potatoes were fine but the greens were soooo salty !! It could have been hotter . My daughter ordered fish & chips which looked fine My son in law ordered chicken roast and said it was fine The service was excellent and ambiance very good . Lovely Sunday roast with friends, the chicken, beef and pork were delicious and very generous for good value. Extra nice because of the red cabbage and pigs in blankets. Unfortunately the service was incredibly slow, less of a concern because we were chatting but it took a lot time for drinks, for food and to pay at the end.

Definitely a summer pub, always gone previously where we have sat outside. Inside however, in the dining room is like being sat in a canteen, so loud and noisy with cutlery and glasses being smashed about right behind us by bar staff. Thought it being New Year’s Day we would go for some nice pub grub at what we thought was one of our favourites but was thoroughly disappointed, the food was like it had come out of the freezer and was presented that way too. Us being a couple were sat in amongst about 5 families with crying kids which I know can’t be helped but you’d think the server would of thought that when we arrived and showing us to our table that a different area may be better (there was space and the quieter side was open & in use by others who had most likely asked to move!), so was incredibly noisy on all fronts, food was rubbish and the dining room on a whole needs a good clean and some painting! Service was good just the food and environment itself.

We haven’t been to the Black Swan in ages. The food and service were excellent. The staff attentive and engaging. The ambience was welcoming and Christmas was certainly in the air yesterday. All in all a fabulous evening and we will return again soon!

Welcoming friendly staff. Had to wait a little while for our food but it was very busy. Having said that the food was excellent.

Arrived a little early, was told to go grab a drink at the bar while they got our table ready. I had booked for 8pm, by 8:10pm no one had come to get us, had to find someone, who confirmed they had forgotten about us. Then to find out they only had a set price, three course festive dinner available. I had booked a table in the bar area and would expected to have been told if there were only one special menu a available at £42 each. We got up and left, not a good experience.

Had requested a cosy table, near a fire and not near the toilets. Got the complete opposite! Pub felt cold and we were near the toilet entrance. We had the roast turkey dinner-not the best. Generous with meat though and the sprouts were a little crunchy. We were disappointed with our visit.

Very slow, starters took 45 mins to arrive, ended up having to send one main dish back. Place wasnt even that busy, it was a mid week lunchtime, wouldn’t go back

Thank you to all of the staff for a great evening. We were a large group (22) and all of our needs were catered for - the food was brought out in good time and was delicious, and drinks were always available. Only a shame we had to leave at closing time. Happy Christmas!

I thought £88 for 2 x cheeseburger and chips plus 2 glasses of wine, a bottle of water and 2 x 2 scoops of ice cream was expensive given that the burgers were thin , coarse ground and not that great. Nice venue and good service.

Jasmine was very accommodating with our off the menu request total star 🌟 just needed a little scooby snack to make the evening last! Fabulous and enjoyable!

Jazz was a brilliant host, the service she gave was brilliant. As her head popped up behind the bar as she stood on tiptoe, I knew that I was in safe tiny hands. 10 out of 10 for everything but height!

We have been to the Black Swan, Ockham before and enjoyed it. Unfortunately on this occasion the food was not up to standard. The staff are friendly -no problem. I ordered the cheese plate-a real let down- supposed to be 3 cheeses-only 2. No apology at first. Cheap crackers and a bit of chutney. The whole plate was a disgrace- no thought given to presentation. It was a table for 4-our friend ordered apple crumble -she could not eat it as it was burnt. The manager did adjust the bill for which we thanked him. The restaurant was not very busy so there should be no reason for the food to be substandard. My venison was excellent. I expect that we will return but my friends were not impressed. It only takes one substandard meal to lose a customer and I doubt they will return. My main comment is : We appreciate times are difficult -so a restaurant has to go the extra mile to keep it customers and give value for money. I suspect that the A3/M25 massive roadworks impinge on people visiting the restaurant. However, I will return and see how they fare. I hope that this is taken as constructive criticism.

Always enjoy a meal at the Black Swan, food is delicious and the service is exceptional. Mulled wine wasn't great but they made another batch and it was good. They are very accommodating with our dogs, always makes space for them (x2 are large 7 x1 smallish). I can't praise the staff enough at the Black Swan.

We were not advised this was a three course meal and most of the choices on offer were poor. We were offered a salad in the middle of Autumn and the beef sauce was far too rich, it actually made me feel ill. All I can say is that it was not Bad but there were 7 of us and no one wants to go back again. The staff were fabulous but it was a seriously overpriced mistake.

Unfortunately there was one very loud customer which spoilt it for the other customers. My double burger tasted of very cheap meat and I mentioned to the waiter, as feedback ,that there were several bits of gristle in it -had a taste you would expect from a cheap frozen burger not from a lovely pub like the Black Swan. Not worth the £20 that dish cost .My friends meal no problems . As always the staff were lovely and friendly and attentative so that made up for it! Thank you.

Food was pretty mediocre and it felt like standards have gone downhill in recent years sadly. Place felt a bit uncared for. Such a shame as this was an old favourite.

It’s a great place. Plenty of space, parking, a lovely country setting. We had a lovely welcome and excellent service. The food was delicious - interesting starters, good choice of mains and deserts.

I’ve visited this pub a number of times and since it’s refurb it looks much better. However, like many hospitality venues they are struggling for staff. We have called in on 2 occasions to see a sign up at the bar saying kitchen closed due to staff shortage. That said, when you can get food it’s always good quality pub food!

We booked a table to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We received a warm welcome upon arrival and were promised a glass of champagne on the house to celebrate the occasion. Unfortunately the glasses of fizz never arrived. Good was delicious but service very mediocre.

Booked for a Sunday evening roast after seeing their offer of £10 roast after 5pm, only to be told after I arrived that they had sold out and normally do by 4.30pm. Good marketing ploy though

Avoid booking a table at 6.0 pm on a Sunday as you get caught up in the change of rota’s. We were parked in a corner & quitely forgotten about. Tables around us were left uncleared from a busy lunchtime service. Four different members of staff walked around a pile of food on the floor, which remained there for the 2 hours it took us to be served. The French Manageress couldn’t be traced. The new shift of Staff were clearly embarrassed & were doing their best to play catch up. This is such a shame as the food, when it came, was very good. We ordered a simple desert of ice cream , rum & rassin, but after a long wait was told that the Chef couldn’t find any! We got our bill & left feeling somewhat disappointed at the whole experience. We have eaten here on several previous occasions & throughly enjoyed ourselves, so what has gone so horribly wrong?

All our food was good and tasty but I think a little expensive . Lovely pub indoor and outdoor. Very nice staff. An event was advertised and I’d received an email about it and therefore booked but waitress at the pub wasn’t aware and a bar member said they weren’t taking part. Email did specifically say the pub name and address. Oktoberfest between 21st Sept-10th Oktober. Disappointed this was our reason for booking.

Awful ambience. Not cosy or welcoming. Nicest area is on right by fireplace but a noisy teenage group was there so we were told to sit on other side. Poor choice of food. Nothing different to what you make at home. Very average quality. Used to be such a great pub. It’s so pretty from outside . It’s such a shame! Needs someone to take it over as it has potential to be amazing like the old days 10 yrs ago!

I haven't been to this pub since before lock down, no real reason but hadn't thought of it. We will definitely be making it one of our favourites from now on. The staff were really friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The roast dinner was totally amazing, I had the beef which was cooked to perfection with just the right amount of potatoes and vegetables. My Mum had the roast chicken, she wasn't able to finish it so took it home. A really lovely country pub feel. Thank you to all the staff, look forward to seeing you soon.

We are very lucky that The Black Swan is fairly local to us, I had invited 5 friends for a pub lunch as the pub has some interesting cinematic connections having been a location for the film "American Werewolf In London" and also Mick Jagger's film "Performance". My friends loved the pub, the food was excellent as was the service and we even got a superb tour of the pub from the wonderful manager Barbie. We hope to book an even larger group for the end of October. Thank you Black Swan.

We were coming back from Brighton and we just wanted a roast dinner, I was able to book online. We arrived earlier than planned and staff were very accommodating. We had a super starter and roast! Every member of staff was genuinely helpful and nice! Would definitely come back and will spread the word!!

My food was not the best. The chicken in the club sandwich was all brown meat and bacon overcooked.

Disappointing. Ate there a few months ago and the food was wonderful. Today’s Roast Beef left a lot to be desired. Cold kale. Soft not crispy roast potatoes. Red cabbage with no flavour at all and a strange colour? We did ask why the potatoes were so soft ( we didn’t eat them) and the waitress seemed bemused and said she would ask the chef. She didn’t come back to us !! Overall very poor experience for £56 with just two roasts and one drink !!

Fantastic Experience! We had an amazing time at this cozy and beautiful restaurant. The staff were very accommodating and attentive. The Sunday roast, especially the roast beef, was outstanding, and the dessert… well let’s say we couldn’t say no ;) They also have an impressive wine list. Highly recommend!

Service with a smile. Food was tasty and reasonably priced for the size of portion especially the starters. Good selection of food and drinks. Nice pub location and has both inside and outside seating space.

Big Mistake. Had an excellent meal a year ago in what was a lively gastro pub. My mistake was not to check the recent reviews before booking. This time the pub was almost empty, they would only serve us in one part of the restaurant. The menu had changed a lot and the food we were served was not very good, didn't seem to be any real cooking involved, just some ingredients assembled on a plate. The starters we initially ordered were not available, the ones we were served were tasteless. For the main course a we chose chicken Kyiv and the burger. The chicken had no 'Kyiv' it was just chicken in breadcrumbs and instead of the French beans on the menu we received frozen peas and fries. The burger was dry and tasteless. We complained to the manager and were offered free coffee. On a positive note the beer and wine were good. This is a lovely pub but its no longer the gastro pub it was, we will not be going there again.

Really horrible experience! We went for Sunday lunch and waited over an hour for food to arrive, only to be told that due to staff shift change, the waitress that took our order didn’t put it in the kitchen! No apology offered at all Also, dog friendly area was just 3 tables on a patio ! We asked if we could move to another bigger table but we were told they won’t serve food there. Whilst we were sitting and waiting we saw another group of 4 at that same table enjoying their roast! Will not visit again

Not as good as usual, lots of flies indoors while we were eating, apparently the fly catching equipment had gone missing. Not sure we will return

Sad to say the Black Swan has gone really downhill. The place was only 1/2 full on a gloriously warm and sunny Sunday - used to be so popular. We waited nearly an hour for food. My son’s burger was so tough he could hardly chew it. Our roasts were served with gravy with the consistency of brown water. Atmosphere and waiting staff have always been good but don’t understand why such a delay given how empty it was…?

Really disappointed - having had lunch and dinner here 5 times over the last 3 years (all great), last night was a very ordinary experience. All other times food was good, menu was great, staff and welcome were superb. Last night was the complete opposite. I had especially booked a booth for a reunion with friends but when we arrived the staff had told customers to sit any where … they had taken our reserved booth! The menu was very limited, food a bit ordinary, and general atmosphere but great. Won’t go back

I ordered the goat’s cheese and beetroot salad, it was very basic and came without dressing. It sadly was not worth the amount charged.

Food was over priced . In my opinion a small steak with a few fries and a handful of watercress is not good enough for £26 - and it didn’t taste of anything. Also had to ask for menus and more drinks - no service to speak of but a large service charge. We paid it, but we shouldn’t have really. The pub is our local so we are always keen to support it. We will still visit for drinks as the garden is lovely, but we won’t eat here again.

Went in for lunch , not taking walk ins at 12-15 . Only 4 people in the restaurant . We were sent vouchers for £10 off food only valid until tomorrow so now can’t use them . I only wanted a sandwich . Only one chef apparently but not the first time lately that food has been unavailable . They spent a fortune on a refurb which is fantastic and look great but the food side is letting it down . Can’t book a single time to eat today . It’s our local . Simply have to go somewhere else if you can’t rely on being able to eat lunch there

We have just moved to the area and could not be happier with our new local. It is always bustling and busy, the staff are always polite and seem to be enjoying themselves, the food is standard pub fare but it is done well.

Was sorely disappointed with the quality of the food when visiting the Black swan I had the cheeseburger and chips that were quite stale and inedible We were told that many items on the menu were not actually available which was disappointing The venue itself is really nice but food was a massive letdown unfortunately

We very much enjoyed our lunch at The Black Swan Pub on Friday 2nd August. The weather was perfect for sitting in the very attractive dining area outside (the section away from the road). The food was very good although my husband would have liked the pie of the day but they had run out (likewise the chicken Kyiv/Kiev). It's clearly a very popular pub. The batter on the fish and chips was light and crispy and the portion generous. The accompanying tartare sauce was delicious though I didn't personally think the curry sauce added anything (it was thin and watery). My son really enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding and the coffees and hot chocolate were very good. The serving staff were excellent (3 young ladies). Although at the top end price-wise for a pub meal, we will definitely return.

We have had fish and chips here before and it has been lovely, however today it was more a batter crisp and the fish that was in there over cooked.. they cooked a fresh couple but still the same, explained apologetically the fish they have are like these at moment!.. should not be using it then or charging at all!! Unfortunately will not be returning!

Disappointing experience 1.Booked table for 7pm. Waitress did not ask my name. Taken to uncleared table which had to be prepared whereas I expected table to be ready. 2.Took a while to place our order for drinks and food. 3.Starter arrived after circa 15 minutes but no drinks.They followed later whilst I expect drinks to be served before arrival of food. 4.Circa 45 minute wait from when starter collected to mains delivered 5.Dessert order taken and arrived within reasonable time. The impression I got was inadequate preparation for a busy friday night, too few waiting staff for number of tables and from what I heard kitchen in disarray coping with the orders. They should limit the number of tables to what staff can cope with. the weather forecast clearly suggested it would be a busy evening. I felt sorry for our waitress who was overburdened dealing with the number of tables she was serving. She did her best to provide a service.

Food was pretty poor - had ham, eggs and chips. Ham - not a lot of it and quite fatty. Eggs - two of them, both dried up and overcooked. Chips - few and average. Service - barely there and definitely not delivered with a smile! We went on a Monday, and found they had a 30% discount on food that day. Might explain why it was busy. In reality though, it appears to be a 30% reduction in the quality and amount of the food!We won’t be returning!

We had a great meal with good service. The initial tables that we sat at before our table was available were dirty and the grass was long and untidy. Plus the chair cushions needed to be cleaned before we sat down. Inside was tidy and welcoming and the toilets were clean and not smelly.

Lovely setting, food only ok, service was extremely slow but the staff were very pleasant!

Wonderful meal and a great service from Rachel and her team. Will definitely visit again.
