Came here this evening. Probably about 10 ish tables in so not mega busy, told on arrival they were out of approximately 40% of the main menu as the chef who ordered the food in had left and not put an order in( for a pub that’s just reopened its doors after previous mismanagement this is not what you want to hear). Was seated quickly , waited about 5 minutes before food and drink orders taken. We only had main meals , ordered a burger with an extra patty. Waited about 15 minutes for drinks to arrive to find the coke was flat. Asked waitress and she changed. Still flat. Didn’t say anything as it clearly wasn’t changing anything. After another 20 minutes I could see other tables who ordered their mains after us got theirs before us. Then a waitress came out and said that there was only 1 patty left and did I want halloumi instead. I begrudgingly agreed. Waited a further 20 minutes for our food to be presumably cooked from then and the burgers came out with patties that looked like they were frozen. The meat was almost rubbery like you’d get from a dodgy takeaway. Usually I wouldn’t mind this after a few pints but with the extras the burger cost 16 quid. Chips, were Luke warm at best and there was about 6. No coleslaw as pictured on Facebook. 2 other party members ordered the steak and ale pie and their meat was tough and chewy. Asked for sauces as not to make a scene and make the best out of a bad situation. 10 minutes later they arrived. All in all poor. Will not be returning even if the ownership changes. After the previous management I didn’t think it could get worse. Boy was I wrong. Also. The pictures I have provided 1 is taken from their Facebook and the other I took of my poor effort of a meal . Poles apart

Decided to visit as we were aware it had recently re-opened under new management. Really pleased that we did. Lovely friendly welcome. Great staff, good service. We were pleased that the place hadn't had a modern makeover. We only went in for drinks but tables near to us, in the bar area, had food. It all looked very appealing and their plates were empty when collected by the girls. Menu is a good but relatively simple pub menu. There didn't appear to be much choice for vegetarians and it would be nice if there was a gluten free option for the bread/buns. The usual car park entrance at the front of the hotel is blocked with a large boulder, the car park entrance is actually next right ( or left turn before the pub, if coming from Shaw) but there is no signage to indicate this. All things considered, we would most definitely return.

Booked a table but got put in the back room in our own as there had been a lot of walk ins. On ordering was advised it would be 20 mins wait for food as there have been a lot of walk ins. When food eventually arrived it was cold and had to be sent back. No discount or offer of coffee or dessert on the house. Not impressed and won't be going back.

Used to go years ago never understood the loyal following or glowing reviews. However after not visiting a few years and after ownership change visited again. No more jack rabbit wines a big mistake replaced with very cheap awful wine. Food very much the same . pea and ham soup which used to be amazing was lukewarm and obviously made with chip shop peas watered down with rare bits of ham .. very disappointing. Mains death by microwave and the often reported friendly staff non existent. I cannot understand the often full car park when much better nearby they need to up their game as the nearby places have gone bust ! I don’t give bad reviews unless they deserve it and on this occasion they fell well below the mark and it’s now off my list and often drive past on the way to other far better places . 1 star because of the open fire and the fact they have finally changed the carpet . But the food very disappointing. Overuse of the microwave here with below average service and food but a lovely open fire and great building . Such a shame needs totally new owners , chefs and service staff . One of the only places I’ve never tipped at ! Won’t be back unless refit and change if owners I’ll monitor the reviews who seem to be from folk with no tastebuds or as with many with a couple of reviews are created by staff or people who own the place UPDATE MARCH 2024 finally closed ! New owners hopefully soon to make use of this wonderful listed historical building . Plus empty proper chefs and then maybe build up a regular clientele

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal at the Black Ladd this evening. The food and the service was excellent. Staff were attentive and got the balance just right. Portions were very generous and I had to leave a little of my main course to make sure I could squeeze in a delicious desert. The only negative (and really it wasn't a negative but something that's could be though about) was the choice of music. There was a lot of 90s dance music coming through the PA, but as it was valentine's night, the music could have been a little better selected. I really am splitting hairs there though, on what was a very enjoyable meal. Thank you!

Came for Christmas eve meal. This used to be a great place to come, not sure what's happened but the service tonight was awful and the food was average at best. Had a pint replaced because the glass smelled (waiter agreed), Took ages just to get the bill to leave the place and when we received the bill took more time waiting to then be told pay at the bar in a queue again. Unpleasant experience, better off at the kings arms or roebuck now by the looks of it.

The service was poor, the food was tasteless and lacked any seasoning. We had 7 meals and the diners were of varying ages from age 10 to age 86, all the meals were tasteless the steak was poor quality and overpriced. We had to ask for cutlery and drinks and waited 25 minutes for two drinks to have with our meal and finished the meal before they arrived. The place looks tired and dishevelled and we booked on line and was sat in the bar area with two round tables put together right in front of the door. I wouldn’t return, and wouldn’t recommend it to friends, expensive for what it was, Very disappointed from what was a country good food pub to a food place similar to a large franchise of frozen bought in produce. It is a dog friendly pub and food would probably suit them more.

Did a job interview here a while back. The staff were rude and inconsiderate of the disability I had communicated with them that I had. I was met with laughter behind my back and a lack of explanation for certain things I had to do while also being expected to just know these things. Considering these were grown people and I was about 16, it was rude and I stopped applying for jobs for months.

Really lovely food & service at The Black Ladd in Shaw. After a rainy walk, 4 of us were looking for somewhere to eat. It was a busy Saturday evening & the restaurant was fully booked. The very helpful head waitress accommodated us in the bar area & kindly put extra heating on as we were cold & wet from the walk. I’m presuming it is a dog friendly pub as the restaurant is separate from the bar area. 3 of us had the homemade cheese & onion pie & the 4th person had the steak & ale pie, all came with gorgeous thick hand cut chips. Our cheese & onion pie is up there with the best I’ve tasted, lovely strong cheese flavour & no evidence of being packed out with mash potato that you sometimes get in that type of pie. The pastry underneath was cooked right through, (I really dislike some pies that still have transparent pastry on the bottom). Apparently the steak pie was also lovely, no grissle or fat to be found. All our food was piping hot when it arrived. The staff service was brilliant throughout our visit. Well done to all staff, especially the chef. We will defo return. Top tip, if you go during the week they have some really good 2 course & 3 course deals on offer. Monday - Thursday.

Then we were welcomed by the lovely manager and the waitress. First, the service was impeccable 👌 friendly, warm and couldn't do enough for us. Then the starter oh yummy! The prawn salad, which was served a gem lettuce. My husband the pate which he too loved. Then I had the cabanarra with chicken. Oh wow, so so tasty and filling. My husband had the chicken dinner with saute mushrooms. He said it was a taste explosion. If we had room in our tummy to have the many deserts they offered then we would have ordered some. But we will have some next time. Thank you for a wonderful evening to you all!!!!

It was disappointing for us as a table of 4. We came in and we were left standing around waiting to be served. The waitresses kept missing off our orders, and the drinks didn’t seem to taste right. The food was okay, but there was loads of misspellings on the menu, and the burger I had was quite greasy. However the sticky toffee pudding was nice. First and last time i will go to this establishment !!! Decided to try this place after numerous recommendations, lovely old world pub great scenary. Went on a sunday specifically for the sunday roast. Had to ask for the sunday roast menu, was verbally tols the menu and sold as soup to start followed by roast. Recieved half a bowl of broccoli and stilton soup with two wedges of frozen bake in the oven baguette, never the less the soup was nice. Then came the roast, large square plate small portion of food spaced out, pathetic portion of watery swede mash and potato mash, portion of frozen carrots and peas with overcooked watery cabbage, frozen watery roast potatoes, frozen small yorkshire pudding, generous amount of meat,it was a shame the beef was cooked to leather. Watery tasteless gravy already poured over my full meal by the staff. Whats more disappointing and shocking was the price !!!! Just shy of £20 each for half a bowl of soup and a frozen tv dinner. Needless to say an overall massive disappointment !!!! Come away still hungry and £50 down !!!! Shocking

First time visiting the Black Lad, from first impression currently covered in scaffolding, the car park needs lots of attention as it just looks like a spare bit of land no one owns or looks after. The pub looks tiered. Yes I know it's an old building and thT should be pry of its charm. Upon entering 'wait to be seated' sign, so you stand there, and no staff are about. The bar area is deserted. Anyway, get seated and asked if we want drinks. Order them whilst looking at what I can only describe as a very limited menu. Some 15 mi s pass before staff came to take food order. What's that? Oh drinks. I'll get them, sorry. So we have food which Tbf was OK, nothing special. Wife wanted another glass of wine with her meal. OK no problem. 20 mins pass still no wine, so the same girl, who it would appear to be trying to everything due to the lack of staff or maybe due to their incompetence brings it, again apologies and gives it for free. I have no idea what the current situation is regarding the ownership/management of the pub is, but they need more staff, and a better menu. Get the renovations completed. 3 stars at best. Can't say I'll be be back any time soon.

We have always like the Black Ladd for family gatherings but yesterday was appalling. We booked for 615pm and were asked to move the time to 630pm & if we could preorder. We still had to wait 45 minutes for our table and then again...

We have been coming here for years but I’m sad to say this pub is nothing like it used to be. For starters we chose the Creamy Garlic Mushrooms which were described as ‘served on toasted ciabatta and topped with a balsamic glaze’ but the mushrooms were swimming in a watery/oily sauce with some bread on the side. The other starter we chose was Prawn and Crayfish Cocktail described as ‘freshwater prawns and crayfish served with baby gem lettuce, cucumber, cherry tomatoes topped with Marie Rose sauce & brown bread’ but there was NO crayfish, NO cucumber & NO tomatoes and the lettuce had soil on it. When we told the waitress about the missing crayfish, she checked with the chef and his reply was “the crayfish is IN the prawns” which makes no sense at all! She did agree to remove the prawns from the bill, which was fair enough. However it just went from bad to worse. The main meals arrived and they were clearly over cooked. The cheese & onion pie wasn’t shortcrust pastry, it didn’t contain 3 different cheeses and instead it looked similar to a quiche consistency & utterly tasteless. The beer battered fish was mainly hard batter with a thin layer of fish inside. Both dishes came with chips which were dark brown & soggy with scraps on the plate, and peas. The waitress came over & asked if everything was ok with our meals, to which we replied & told her we couldn’t eat them, so she went to get the Manager. She was really unprofessional & didn’t seem very experienced in customer service & said the chef was on his holidays & they had 2 young trainee chefs! The waitress did offer us complimentary drinks but we declined as we just wanted to leave. When they finally brought us the bill, they had charged us for both starters!! We questioned why they had revoked their promise to waive the cost of the prawn starter & she said it was because they now hadn’t charged us for the main meals?! In the end we only paid for 1 starter and the drinks and couldn’t wait to get out of there. It is clear from our awful experience last night & numerous other bad reviews since the new management team have taken over, that the standard of customer service & the quality and presentation of the food (which the restaurant was well known for) have suffered greatly. What we were served was just awful & not what was described. Unfortunately we will not be returning and will no longer be recommending The Black Ladd to family & friends.

Came to the hotel and requested a room for a single night, having paid 80 pounds for said single night I thought it was reasonable granted the cosy atmosphere of the downstairs lower bar and locale. However, the room was particularly unimpressive, the shower did not work, and I was unable to properly flush the toilet as my girlfriend was later horrified to discover. Aside from the poor state of the room for the price it is given, the service and bar downstairs was most enjoyable. A good alcoholic selection and friendly talkative staff. Would possibly come again however only for food or drinks.

Beautiful location and building. We all had a 3 course Sunday lunch and everyone loved it. The staff were superb and we were well looked after. I have to give a special mention to the fish galette starter (fish cakes) which were the freshest, lightest and crispiest fish cakes I've ever had, truly blown away by them. The beef on the roast dinner is special, perfectly cooked and melts in the mouth. Cannot fault the place and would highly recommend.

Loved the new seasonal menu. We had seabass and the suet pudding but no chips, extra veg instead, both were amazing.

My sister in law and I went here for lunch for my birthday. Wow, this place is awesome. Outside and inside bedecked for Christmas. What a beautiful aura for customers. We ordered our food and drinks. We had the steak pie and the steak pudding. Oh my goodness, everything was delicious, the home cut chips and mushy peas were to die for. The staff are very pleasant and we didn't wait long for our meals, about 10 mins. The open fire was a welcome sight as it was quite a cold but bright day. I had to write this review as I have reviewed lots of places to eat in the past, but the Church Inn is one not to miss. I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone as it serves the best food that I have ever tasted. Long may you all reign, you are all 2nd to none. Bravo to owners, chefs and waiting staff. A most pleasurable afternoon spent in a delightful location.
