Black Iron in Leicester

My first visit to Black Iron Restaurant at Winstanley House and it was total perfection. Lovely staff who couldn't do enough for us. My sirloin was perfect, as were the triple cooked chips. Price is fine for this quality. Can't recommend it enough.

Truly a special place - we visited for Sunday lunch, the building is absolutely gorgeous, the food was exceptional, yet my special thanks go to the staff who offer a level of hospitality unlike any other, we’ve never felt so welcomed in a setting like this. Thank you ever so much, we will see you soon <3 (These photos do not do the food justice!)

A swanky restaurant situated in the middle of a rather dilapidated park is probably what the area needs, the staff were lovely, the main Sunday dinner portion size was LARGE, oh one tiny thing was the price of the bottled water for the table, but on the whole we’d go again. Just to add it was great to chat with the fitness loving chap who works there for advice on having a flatter belly. We would definitely recommend

Went for a family brunch before mothering Sunday. This is the second bad meal at this restaurant , last one was an evening meal - hilariously bad. Although the waitress was very helpful and friendly she could not make up for appalling food. This was once a fabulous restaurant now one of the worst I have eaten at this year. Full English came with a tiny poached egg and pre buttered toast - edges not buttered. Mushrooms smelt of fish and the bacon was unbelievably salty . Scrambled eggs with spinach had to be sent back as it was so salty it was inedible. We had finished the meal before the second version of this dish arrived , still salty and on toast that had barely seen a grill. The waitress insisted we should not pay for this meal which was eaten simply because as a diabetic my mother in law had to eat . Save your money don’t visit

We were a large group and although it is boasted as award winning afternoon tea we we a little dissapointed. The teabags had split in the pot so we were given a tea strainer. Very weak tea and second pots were not hot and we expected more of a variety of savoury foods considering the cost. However the cakes were nice especially if you like scones as there was an abundance of them. Friendly staff and efficient service.

Wonderful food (both for dinner and breakfast), great service. A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. Good selection of wines by the glass.

We came for Sunday lunch and it was so lovely. We had two mocktails each, starters, main and desserts and it came to around a total £80 which we thought was incredible value for money. The quality of the food as well was also lovely, the rump melted in your mouth. What is a bit rubbish are the parking attendants. They may as well not be there, very unhelpful and lapse.

Atmosphere was really nice. The food was amazing and the best part was our server, Ellie. She was lovely, really friendly.

Fabulous meal, best fillet steak we've eaten in a long time. Everything perfectly seasoned too. Service very attentive and very friendly. The waitresses even produced a belated birthday card for me, even though my 60th was last July 😁 Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place and we will return!

Went for the 32oz porterhouse and the bottle of Malbec for £60 on a Sunday night. The food in itself was good, steak cooked well, carved and served to your table, hassle back potatoes and veg ok, could be seasoned a bit more. Service was a bit poor, had to ask for steak knifes, salt and pepper. The atmosphere is a little dull, that may be down to the seating and room as it's got very tall ceilings. Better with a crowd.

Went for a family birthday great food and service we were looked after by Izzie who did a superb job especially with the kids in our party.

Staff were all very welcoming, particularly Jake C. It was a lovely relaxed evening. Great food and atmosphere. All round fantastic experience and we will definitely return!

We summoned the Steak Board – apart from fillet, rib-eye and sirloin, all the beef cuts are sold by weight – but my friend wasn’t keen, requesting instead some scallops from the starters menu and an assortment of sides. (“Lots of people do that,” said the server.) The only “bespoke” cut that was even vaguely plausible for me alone was a 250g hunk of Chateaubriand, the tenderest bit of the tenderloin.

This is by far the best steak restaurant in Leicestershire. Been here lots of times and never been disappointed. Get service from our waiter jake topped off by a very relaxing atmosphere.

Fantastic service, it's a shame the food wasn't as good, very dry chateaubriand, was advised to have this done medium, should have gone fir my usual medium rare, probably would have come out perfect.

Fantastic Ribeye steak and a bottle of Chianti! What a unique place! Triple cooked chips and garlic mushrooms topped off a lovely meal!

So I called this restaurant in the morning around 10am to ask what time breakfast is served until, they told me you have to be seated by 11am. (the receptionist went to ask the restaurant) I travelled from the other side of Leicester got there at 10.40 and they tell me the chef cannot make anything, hes doing paperwork!! the place was completely empty too..... Why would they tell me 'yes that's fine turn up before 11am' and then tell us to go away when we get there? ive been coming here for years and not been for 6 mths or so and thought it would be nice..... id never go there again..... wasted my time...the chef needs to go and the lady in the restaurant also needs to learn how to talk to customers....the owner needs to see whats going on here as she's probably not in the loop...

Attended following booking online and with a voucher. Booking wasn't checked or confirmed on arrival. Seating and first drinks were slow. There wasn't an indication whether the coffee and tea were included, so we assumed they were. I was able to have cream with mine, which I always choose for a treat. Coffee was lovely, we didn't try the tea. I had the waffles, bacon, and maple for bottomless prosecco lunch. Husband had the full English (nv). Overall I was disappointed with mine, it appeared to be Belgian sugar waffles, which with the maple was far too sweet ( I fear they were even pre packaged) and, despite the bacon being delicious, it couldn't temper down the overt sweetness of the Belgian sugar waffles, (rather than buttermilk) to make the brunch edible. Feedback was requested by the wait staff, but they didn't offer alternative or any additional items to make up my brunch, leaving me a little hungry when I left. Husband had no concerns of the quality or cooking of his full English. The bottomless prosecco, although slow to be served, was topped up regularly following breakfast and tasty. Further drinks were offered, such as orange and coffee, and we were not rushed to finish our table. The building was lovely and the facilities of a high standard. There was no offered cloakroom, which meant coats were hanging off of chairs. Mixed crockery and cutlery were used on the tables. Tall bright windows were well dressed and bright despite the weather. The room was warm without being stifling. Overall, it was a mixture of a grand elegant setting with a lack of finesse in areas, including the food. Value wise, I'd score a 6/10, quality of food and drink 6/10, service and venue 7/10

Was 5 mins late to arrive, (i informed them prior) and turned us away. The waiter took his time to sit us down and then told us that he can't sit us down as we were 15 mins late. Extremely poor customer service. Definitely won't be coming back again!

Hot plates but food wasn't piping hot suspect it had waited to be brought out to table. Very tasty beef gravy lacked taste perhaps a touch of red wine may have improved the flavour good selection of veggies. I would return.

Visited 2 days before Christmas for brunch..very festive, with beautiful decorations, our waitress was so friendly, great sense of humour and very attentive, nothing was too much trouble, forgot to ask her name but she was fabulous thank you..will be back. Thank you and Merry Christmas

We have dined here a few times since it opened, and it has gone from strength to strength. Everything we were served tonight was outstanding....absolutely delicious! Also a special mention to our lovely server Izzy... she was brilliant....funny, attentive and hardworking, a real credit to the restaurant

Four of us had Sunday lunch..... wow !! It was outstanding, best roast we've eaten in a long time. The Pork chops were fab, as was the beef, lovely Yorkshire puddings, with lots of great veg & roast potatoes, also given 2 jugs of Gravy which were refilled on request and different Sauces & mustard provided. Dessert also delicious Service great as prompt but not intrusive, with friendly staff. Would recommend & will return

I arranged my work Christmas lunch (for 24 people) at the Black Iron this year. From the moment you arrived the building is really impressive. The bar area is beautifully decorated. The food and service were both fantastic! Highly recommended and I will definitely be back. 5 stars

There was Christmas celebrations on in other parts of building - never seen so many beautiful sparkly dresses!!! We had a Lovely welcome - Had drinks in the bar before our meal. We've dined here several times but noticed how cold it was in actual restaurant. We mentioned to waitress who obviously passed on as heater got warm. Was fine whilst eating then really cold again. Service was excellent really pleasant staff. Food was nice tho steaks werent the best weve had in past. Dessert was delicious - chocolate tarte. We will return and would recommend.

I visited Black Iron restaurant for breakfast yesterday with friends and was greeted by the lovely smiley Cherie. She made our visit memorable and nothing was too much of an ask. She is definitely a credit to you. We look forward to seeing her again in the near future. Thank you!

Brought my partner here for a special date night. It was perfect. Had the chicken breast and it could not have been better, was really amazing. Beautiful building with lovely atmosphere. Staff were very warm and welcoming as well. Great place for a date night.

The best meal we've had in a long time plus the location, atmosphere and decor are impressive👌 Very special dinner food was spectacular. Staff were down to earth and Felt like a real bargain!

Really disappointed with the food and service, we visited last night for a special 40th meal, The waitress dropped a pint down my partners brand new jacket, which has stained it. No apology was made, the pint was still charged for afterwards with no offer to rectify the jacket. The food was a really poor quality, one of the medium steaks came out supposedly Medium Rare and was the rarest steak i have ever seen with blood poring out. For the price of the food, i would not expect all the issues we had and i would not recommend eating here to anyone.

One of the best steaks I've ever tasted. I didn't actually order accompanying sauce but the one included was delicious. And don't get me started on those triple cooked, chunky chips......I could have eaten them again!

Jake gave great service and the steak was amazing!! 100% recommend

Brilliant place to go just for a coffee, lovely seating out area.

Had the afternoon tea. Very expensive and not much for the money. No cream came with the cream tea scones. Only a couple of tiny sandwiches each no coffee not much really got a better afternoon tea at the kings lock tea rooms at a much lower price. Will never go again.

Driving through the park to gain entry to the establishment was a unusable and fantastic start tothe evening...... This place is decorated beautifully.....such an interesting place to visit. The food was delicious and plentiful. It isn't a cheap place to go but the money was well spent. I definitely will be returning....

We made a late decision to go out on a Monday evening, and with a few places we had in mind being closed, we recalled that friends of ours had recommended the Black Iron to us. Although there is a facility to book a table online, I called to reserve as I wanted to check re the dress code. It was a blazing hot day and it was good to hear that the requirement was smart/casual, with tailored style shorts being acceptable. Despite not being in the greatest part of Leicester, once you've crossed the public park and entered the gated area of Winstanley House, you can be relaxed that you're in a quality environment. We were shown to a table in a relatively quiet dining room. There was a mix of diners like us, along with business looking types who may or may not have been staying at Winstanley House. I would imagine that the room is stretched to capacity on traditionally busier nights the week, but we've always been far happier dining out on Mondays and Tuesdays as you generally receive better service. The restaurant had a nice, calm atmosphere with some music playing. The front of house guy/waiter was very pleasant and took our order, as well as fielding a couple of questions I had what sides to order in relation to mains. We had some great cocktails to begin with, An Old Fashioned, a Raspberry Bellini and a mocktail for my 16-yr-old, who said it was the best drink he'd ever tasted. I chose the mackerel starter which came with a potato salad and a couple of slices of delightfully gentle bread, possibly brioche. It was put together really well and both of us that chose it thought it was first class - A really good combination of flavours and textures. For main, we ordered the Porterhouse steak to share along with a single fillet steak for the youngster as he has no tolerance for the fat that most other cuts contain. The steaks were cooked to perfection and tasted about as good as steak can. For sides we had fries, seasonal greens and leeks with hazelnut. All were good, but the latter was exceptional. The steak sauces were equally as good. I should add that my 6-yr-old simply wanted some fries with tomato sauce and some ice cream for dessert, despite there being some more expansive options for her. This didn't appear to be a problem. It's nice as a parent, that you can go for a quality meal somewhere and a child can have a meal, or just a small amount should they wish. We're not big on desserts, so finished with some nice drinks, but the youngsters had the aforementioned ice cream and a chocolate cheesecake, both of which were well received. I must say that this was a marvellous experience. We generally use a well known chain steakhouse that has a couple of places in Leics, but this is better in every respect.

We booked a last minute brunch for two people. When we arrived the venue car park was busy following a wedding the evening before. However we still found a space. We were greeted and we asked if we could have a coffee in the garden first before dining as we arrived early. This was no problem we ordered drinks at the bar and sat outside. The waitress then offered for us to have brunch outside if we wished as the weather was so lovely which we kindly accepted. We have had breakfast here before and it never disappoints and the service is always good. I would recommend for birthdays, anniversaries etc

We went to the restaurant for our wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent quality and the service was as good. If you compare the price a 2 meals at this restaurant compared with something like TGI Fridays it’s worlds apart and better value. Some sides only £3 and the onion rings were a massive portion. The steak was cooked to perfection and would recommend this place to anyone.

We had dinner here and it was just wonderful! Winstanley House is beautiful and the restaurant equally so. There was a lovely atmosphere with lots of busy tables in the main restaurant and what I believe was a birthday party in the private dining room. It was a gorgeous evening and there were lots of people out in the garden when we arrived too which was lovely. We were looked after so well by Jake C throughout our visit. He was very attentive, really helpful and generally lovely! We had a slight disappointment when we chose the porterhouse, only to find out someone nabbed the last one just before us. Our disappointment only lasted till our gorgeous food arrived and then we were over it. The quality of the food is amazing and the portion sizes are just right. We loved our cheese fritters so much that we ordered another portion while eating them. They're like little, fluffy, cheese clouds of happiness. 😂 The fillet was just beautiful and cooked to perfection and the chips (both types) and sauces were great too. I went a bit off-piste with my dessert choice and had mint chocolate trifle. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was soooooo good. We finished the meal with a drink in the bar and had a chat with lovely Tosin who also really looked after us. It's not often we get a night out on our own and it was fantastic to be able to do it here. We both loved our meal, the venue, the staff and will certainly be back.

We've eaten here several times but this was very disappointing. Two of 3 of us were ill afterwards, almost certainly from the creme caramel. Worse, management refused to accept responsibility. Maybe if they'd refunded us we'd visit again, but not now, until there is new management.

The restaurant was a good size, tables were nicely spaced out. The staff were very friendly, when making the reservation is said 2 hours sitting time but they didn't ask us to leave, so we didn't feel rushed. We chose 4 sandwiches from a selection of 6, and they were brought out on a plate altogether, we had to work out which sandwich was which and who it belonged to. It would have been nice if they plated each of our selection separately. The sandwiches were really nice, simple and delicious but very small. And, I was very surprised that we were not offered refills. I've been to a few afternoon teas and they always offer us more sandwiches but here we only got four each. The sweet treats were very nice to look at but I found them a bit too sweet. Our only major issue was that a pot of tea was brought out warm rather than hot. We then opted for another tea later on and decided to have it cold. It was very refreshing after all the sweetness. For the price, it was a nice afternoon tea and they have an outdoor area which was great to chill out and relax with a drink afterwards.

Food was lovely but service was terrible. Waitress clearly didn't want to be there and couldn't even muster a thank you or goodnight at the end of the meal. It felt like we were waiting around for service and an inconvenience. At least the bar person wished us a good night and hope to see you again soon. Shame the waiting staff couldn't adopt the same friendly attitude.

The food was absolutely incredible. We were served by kilian and this is nothing more he could of done to make our evening so special. A true credit to the building. We will 100% return
