We visited today for a family meal, the girls behind the bar and serving are so welcoming and friendly. Little funny banter behind the bar between the girls. After visiting The Elisabeth Arms in Bilston a few day's ago which is also part of the Sizzling group chain, the staff need to come here for some training on customer service. This country style pub is like a breath of fresh air! Friendly staff, Clean Premises, Excellent and well presented food. Would recommend and definitely return Soon, thanks everyone at The Black Horse Illey for making our Sunday Family meal a pleasure.

Was meant to be a nice lunch ended up with stale cold fries you can tell the oil needed changing in the fryer they tasted off and to top it off there was a hair on my steak- I did however get a refund for my lunch my partners was ‘edible’ I really wouldn’t recommend coming here I’ve noticed it’s been going down hill for a while I thought on the off chance I’d try it. Never again

In the last 10 days we have visited The Meadowlark, The Stag and three Horseshoes and today The Black Horse all part of the Sizzling group.. The quality of the service, and food Quality was outstanding at The Black Horse. Would like too to point out Jemma from taking our Drinks order and our food order, asking us did we want to upgrade and any extras on the meals. Also help with the APP for discounts to be added has i wasnt sure how they worked nothing was too much trouble. When the meals arrived everything was has we ordered and piping hot "Stag and Horseshoes" kitchen staff need to come here and learn from our experience last Monday. Thank you Black Horse Team, will definitely recommend and return. Thanks for restoring our faith in the SIZZLING Pubs group.

The table was booked for 7 people by our daughter-in-law as a family get-together for lunch on the 24th March at 3 0clock. One member of the family placed our order via the in house app, i opted for the 8oz steak medium rare, we checked the availability and all was fine then a member of staff informed us this wasn't the case and would i chose something else from the menu, i was a little put back but i chose the chicken breast and 5oz steak combo. When it arrived the steak was over cooked and the onion rings had been fried that much they were uneatable, another member of the family had ordered the burger that had to be returned to the kitchen as it was very over cooked in fact it was that hard it couldn't be eaten even the bun appeared stale It was replaced. I had to return the onion rings to the bar and complained. When we ordered after dinner drinks my drink was slammed down on the table that hard it was a wonder it never broke the glass. We have been to the Black Horse on a few occasions before it had changed over to a "Sizzling pub" and never had any problems. We all agreed that we would never use that venue again, very poor service and poor quality food. Very disappointing.

Son and Daughter-In-Law had come over from America, so thought I would treat his Sister and her partner as well with Lunch at The Black Horse. Son-In-Law used the M&B app on his phone to order. Food and service were great. Highly recommended and will definitely visit again.

Feeling peckish I asked my friend to take me somewhere in Halesowen. I'm so glad he chose The Black Horse, it was fabulous. Mid week meal around 3 pm was just perfect. The atmosphere was good and our waitress couldn't have been more helpful. It was very homely and the music was just in the background not belting out so that we couldn't have a conversation. The food was piping hot and reasonably priced. Would love to go again.

Went for an early evening meal on a Saturday, got a table without any fuss. It was not too busy and there was plenty of room inside and out, and the small play area at the rear was used by our granddaughter. Ordered our food and waited quite a while for it to be delivered and not the best food I've had there, waited even longer for our dessert which we had to ask for again and was only ice cream. There were only one of three guest beers on tap and am struggling to find anything positive to say, I'll not be back in a hurry.

It's a converted church, food always good. I take my parents there for lunch and my granddaughter causes chaos but they are g.ood with her. Very good family atmosphere. Highly recommended.

As long as it's not too busy, this place is fine. The food - though not outstanding - is edible and relatively inexpensive. The atmosphere is generally friendly. It's quite near the urban West Midlands area but remains something of a rural pub. (Unsure if there are still quiz nights but that used to be a feature of The Black Horse a while back.)

My steak was too tough but other choices may be better. The beer was decent but would not bother to revisit though for food again.

Called in for Sunday Lunch group of 9. The pub was much quieter than normally seen. starters came and were acceptable, we then waited about 40 mins for mains which then appeared to have been kept on a hot plate for too long. Several meals were dried out or even burnt. In the past the food was good but we are guessing that the chef has changed and that was the reason why there were a lot less people in the pub.Wouldn't recommend until we hear that a new chef is in place.

Warm friendly staff and atmosphere the place you can just call into for and good meal, we often call in from work on a Saturday early evening and you could best dressed up or in work wear and still feel comfortable and welcome!

My family and a booked table for 3pm on Christmas Day we were not seated till after 4pm with no apology. The table was not bring used when we arrived, but it took the staff 4 attempts to clean and clear the table, then several trips to lay it. We were suppose to have bucks fizz on arrival this was not offered, when we asked about it we were told the staff member was busy elsewhere. There was no Christmas atmosphere, no table decorations, the place was not very clean, we had to ask to have the heating on as it was cold. We had to wait over an hour between courses, still no apology for the appalling service. We were not offered coffee at the end of the meal and were told it was not included. when it was on the menu, at this point we had been there over 3hrs, when they rang the bell for last orders and expected to leave, it was not our fault we were there more than an hour longer than we should have been. When we complained, the member of staff asked what did we expect him to do about it.He said he had been there since 10am, had had to leave his 2 children and not able to have his lunch with them. Surely if he is in the pub trade then that is the profession he had chosen and unsociable hours and days are expected. I did not think his attitude was very professional. We certainly will not be returning to this establishment and certainly will not be recommending it to anyone.6 very disappointed customers.

my wife and I ordered 2 8oz steaks after waiting half an hour they finally arrived. I was asked how we wanted them cooked I said medium rare when they arrived they were as dry as the Gobi desert been pre cooked for at least an hour and as black as liver it's not hard to cook a steak somebody in this place needs to learn how to cook. I can honestly say I wont be going back there again until they get rid of this idiot!

my parents took me and my boyfriend and my sister and her boyfriend out for a meal for their birthdays last week, we went on a thursday night and the pub was half empty but most of the tables were reserved we asked the waitress who said sorry its quiz night we are busy so we sat by the pool table the bench was so uncomfortable it wasn't quite wide enough. anyway we had no choice as everything was reserved or being used.me and my boyfriend had the 2 foot naan with chicken tikka it was very nice but we could of done with a little bit more tikka as the naan got quite dry after a while they forgot our onion bhajees that were overcooked when they arrived but the waiter apologised twice. my dad had surf and turf and they put the turf on my sisters boyfriends plate he had ribs so im not sure why anyone would want scampi with ribs the waiter apologised and my sisters boyfriend passed the scampi to my dad. my sister had a burger which she said was ok but alittle dry so she added extra mayo and my mom had scampi which she said was fine. we will go again as its an ok local pub

I came to the black place and I ordered a mix girl, I ordered it at 7pm and it arrived at 8:25pm, I found the service very poor and I shall not be returning. The bar staff are friendly and very polite.

Been to this pub twice recently and both times we have had poor service and horrible food. We ordered 2 steaks: 1 well done and 1 medium. they both came and as we cut into them the blood dripped out of them. we sent them back and again both steaks still had blood dripping out. the waitress then said the chef would cook new steaks. a couple of minutes later she brought the same steaks out again on the same plate so i now had blood covered salad and chips too! I WILL NOT be going here again as the chef obviously cant cook a decent steak even after 3 attempts!

We have eaten here several times across the years and never had a bad pub meal........ until today. My wife ordered sliders and was faced with rolls that were solid and she couldn't even cut them with a knife! The curly fries were soggy and saturated in grease. My meal was just about edible.The table had a sticky feel and the Restaurant could do with a deep clean. I wonder what the kitchen is like? From my seat you could see peeling paint on the windows and the outside sign was dirty and not a great advert. We would never go there again!

To begin with the entire pub was dirty and dated , then there was an almost hour long wait for food. After what seemed like a lifetime of waiting the food was a disgrace , I was greeted with processed chicken , wilted salad and hard oily chips. My mother had undercooked fish and felt sick for the rest of the night the rest of us also wanted to sick our meals up for fear of what we had consumed . The waitress looked moody and had horrific dirty nails. It was an absolute disgrace. If you value hygiene and a susbstancial quality of food then I would not advise visiting what can only be described as a dirty hovel of a pub.

we have been here many times in the past, this visit was a family visit.. NEVER AGAIN.... 1 meal had a long black hair on it when it arrived, fish was still wet and pink, my burger was fine, however waitress accidently knocked my drink over me when putting my food down, no apology left me sat there dripping in lager and black while she went to the kitchen to get a towel to mop up the table, nothing for me to dry my dripping clothes with, when I asked her, her attitude was awful, rolling her eyes and tutting saying she had to wipe the table, the manager was no better, full of apologies but a terrible condescending tone, a complete disregard to the customer, why employ staff that have no customer service or hospitality skills! The manager even said it was pointless speaking to her ( waitress) as she was leaving that night and it wouldn't make any difference, well to me that says it all!!! a ruined night!!!

Love it here, friendly happy staff, food always fine and good value for money , family friendly with super play area to rear. Safe and gated!

We go there every week and I cannot complain out the food, I've never had a bad meal. Sometimes the food takes a while to come out but its worth it when it comes. However DONT PAY ON CARD!! Every time I have (talking 5/6) they have overcharged even to the extent of when paying on two cards attempting to charge the whole amount twice and saying it didn't connect so to try again then the money gets taken from the account twice! Needless to say I will always be paying in cash from now on and I suggest anyone eating here should do the same or keep a close rye on your account!!

Was staying at the Travelodge at Frankley on the M5 and this was the closest pub/restaurant. Admittedly it was a Saturday night and was very busy but there was an extremely long wait for the food to arrive. I had the mixed grill which was a reasonable price however the steak and the chicken were incredibly tough, no steak knife either, so had to try and hack them to bits. Lots of screaming kids in there and kids running round the tables as you are trying to eat. Only one person on the bar most of the evening and only 2 waiting staff from what I could see.Last year whilst again staying at the Travelodge I was going to eat at The Black Horse but it was closed for refurbishment and ended up going to the nearby Swallows Nest in Romsley which is about 3 miles further on, but was a much better meal, I wish I had gone there again this time.

We have family meals here at least once or twice a month, and find the staff friendly. I can't understand some reviews and ok the meals are not top notch, but they are value for money.

Having visited on a regular basis I was really disappointed on my last visit. We had to wait over an hour for food the food finally arrived. At no time did the manager apologise, in fact he was quite rude. The other staff however were so apologetic. Sorry but won't be visiting again for a while

Appalled by nasty food and a don't care less attitude from all staff!! Turkey was awful and Sunday dinner was missing stuffing and all staff arnt bothered and roll there eyes at you, will never ever go here again. Waste of our family meal out. Doesn't deserve a 1! Can't believe there are people like this managing public business's

I have used this restaurant a few dozen times, and while it was mostly fairly predictable, the food has sometimes reached quite a decent standard. Today, when we wanted something to tend to our feeling of listlessness, we ordered steak and chips. Brakes delivery wagon was blocking two of the disabled parking spaces when we arrived, so we couldn't use either of them. He was quite polite when asked if he was instructed to park there or just chose to. Our meal was disappointing, and the waiter was gracefully apologetic. We hated complaining though and would much rather have had a good meal. It was only a 2 for £10 deal so we didn't expect much, but decent food properly cooked would have been a good start. The steaks were exceedingly tough, the peas were tinned and the chips were quite strange. Not all of them, most of them were just boring but one seemed to glow a bit. I'd rather pay full price for a steak and get something fit to eat than pay half and get something to give the dog indigestion. She gets better out of a can.If you are going to make the business of Concessionaire trading work, you have to give your traders huge amounts of back up and using Brakes as the supplier fails on all points it seems except their driver was at least polite. We came away feeling very disappointed and even more listless.

pieces of lamb marinated it a tomateo and olive sauce served on a bed of rice actually means shredded bits a lamb in a soup that had come sraight out the microwave, the waiting staff consist of young girls who dont think twice about rolling their eyes at you who havent had any proper trainning for working with the public but after been served by the managers that day i very much doubt they will be getting any either. If its something quick and cheap your after than this is your place but if its quality service and dinning your after than stay well away.

First time to the pub. Exterior needs some work but internally the pub is clean and inviting. However very small.Staff were pleasent and personable. 2 for £10 deal available excellent choice for this deal.Menu offers alternatives to the usual run of the mill typical pub menus. Food was served in a good time and presented well.Tasty and excellent meal.Salad very fresh.Didnt get asked if our meal was ok which is now a usual procedure in all eating places. Overall would recommend. Will definately return.

The food was very well presented and a nice size for the the price. As with all Orchid pubs the menu offered a good choice. Plenty of choice on the two for £10 menu. Staff are friendly. Only down side was that we were not asked at any time if our food was ok.

Went here on Sunday for lunch I had lasagna it was cold ! My children had roast beef dinner the beef was like leather my son nearly choked on it I called the manger over to complain an she stood there cutting the beef to prove it wasn't tuff her personal hygiene was not the best especially as it was a hot day never coming to this pub again an if the new manger thinks he can make this the best pub around his got a long way to go ! Give me the old crown Sunday lunch any day

After telling family & friends how brilliant the food was the last few times we had been, tonight has been a complete let down! Thank god the bar/waiting staff were lovely because the food was terrible! How can a medium steak arrive like it's just come off the cow & a medium-well come tough as an old boot! Not even 3rd time lucky did the chef get it right!.. Even the lad who served us new how bad it was as we weren't charged for the worst meal..5* for the bar staff0* for the foodSuch a shame!

Myself and my two children went there tonight, and we won't be going there again. The childs meal we ordered had a burger that was just full of salt and tasted disgusting. My daughter and I had the same steak pie. It was soggy and cold, the only reason the bottom was hot, was due to the plate being hot. Tasteless mash potatoes. This used to be one of the best pubs around here for food and value. Now I would say it is the worst. The place was so cold we kept our coats on, and there was a cold draft around our legs. This place is not warm or inviting at all. We will not be going there again.

i am normally easy to please with food and when i read the comments on here about the burgers i ignored them.... i wish i had not 16oz burger is not 16oz at all and as soon as i saw the lady bringing it over to me i knew it was going to be no good straight away the burgers where thin and the meat was really poor if it had not been for the bacon and cheese i would not of been able to eat as much as i did... wouldnt feed that to my dog... also one lady behind bar just stood playing with napkins for several mintues before she took our order very rude wont be going again....

Went here with the wife and kids.I ordered food at the bar. We waited....and waited .....and waited....One hour had passed. Still nothing. Naturally, I inquired at the bar. I was told "You're food is coming". Almost two hours had passed. The kids were restless. We were all hungry and irritable. Numerous parties who arrived after us had all eaten, paid and left.The wife and kids went back to the car and I went to the bar again. This time to convey my total disappointment. The young lady replied " What do you want me to do about it!? It ain't my problem!"Shocking. Enough said.

We are big fans of the hugely popular Black Horse on Manor Way and visited this Black Horse at Illey purely because the other was fully booked. It does the same great menu of 2 main courses for £10 which is great value and a nice pub to go with it.

This is my third visit, and once again I can say that I enjoyed my meal, and with their 2 for £10 deal, my pocket likes it too.I think there has been a change since my last visit as the real ales were not as good as they were. Today only two were on sale and the first one I tried was cloudy. I noticed that it was not available later so I will presume that I had the bottom of the barrel dregs. Any decent barman would not have served it, certainly the previous barman was red hot on his ales, I hope this one learns very soon. I also thought that the drinks are quite expensive; a pint and a tonic water £4.60.The place is a little tired looking and there was a sign in the bar informing customers of closure from 6 January to 19 January 2013 for changes; not sure what sort of changes as it did not specify.

Went here for the first time to have an evening meal after been recommended by my mother in law. food was very nice and tasty my husband found the burger a tadge dry. staff very polite and helpful. pub situated. down a country lane so it felt like you had driven quite away into the country but u hadnt.my only complaint was the ladies toilet it needs a good lick of paint and new carpet/tiles and toilet seats, as the one i went in had no toilet seat it was on the floor. If the new owner sees this please do something to the ladies. we will be bk again

Very disappointed with. Christmas Day. Just like pub meal with crackers. Little things were missing that make it special. No tablecloths had to drink wine for Christmas dinner from tumblers as they ran out of wine glasses. We were there for Christmas Day 2011. Very different this year. Food excellent but it was the little things that Mae a big difference that were missing. We have meals regularly but won't be going again on Christmas Day.

Came here a few weeks ago as we wanted to try something different. Went on a sunday afternoon and had a chicken dinner. I have to say, it was very good food! Chunky chips and peas on the side which were fab. Came with a big silver gravy boat which was great as most places never give you enough gravy. Drinks were reasonably priced and a good car park to the side. Overall, good atmosphere, good quality and fairly priced. Got two chicken dinners for £11. Can't say fairer than that!

I have been to the Black Horse for the past two Thursdays.Mainly to attend the quiz BUT also to eat before the quiz starts.Firstly the staff are very friendly and always helpful.They have just introduced a new menu where a large percentage of the meals are on a 2 for £10 offer.there are 8 of us in our team and we all eat.So far we have two meals in there and the food as been very good.Quick service - with a smile - that always helps! and plenty of choice as well.Also if you are looking for a meal and a nice friendly quiz afterwards this the place to go.We eat about 7.30pm and the quiz starts at 9pm - and its free to enter,with the winners winning a gallon of beer.A great night can be had for as little as £10 per couple.where else can you get that.Strongly recommended.

I've been using this pub occasionally for 15 years and have always been disappointed in the bar service which used to consist of 2 female members of staff serving the regulars first and making it look like a chore when it was your turn.Nice surprise last week to be greeted by someone else and be served promptly.We sat down for a meal and it took half an hour for the starters to come which were okay, but took another 15 minutes for the dirty plates to be taken away.When the mains came, the wedges were nowhere near cooked properly, the burger - althuogh looking very appealing for just under a tenner - tasted cheap and greasy, not like proper burgers should and my wife's "Garlic & herb prawn twisters in a light batter" tasted like odds & ends of fish shoved in a deep fat fryer. Steak was also thin and so tough it couldn't be cut and most of it was left.After 40 minutes of waiting for our half-eaten mains to be taken away, we got up and left, skipping the pudding I had already paid for.I've always thought the reviews on here were harsh but after what is possibly one of the worst meals I've had in years and paying over £50 for it, I won't be eating here again, nor even popping in for a drink - it does need updating as said before and it's always cold in there to the point of being uncomfortable.This pub is in desperate need of a refurb (and new cook) which is in an ideal location

As a family we come most Sundays and have been for a while now. Not once have we received a bad meal. In my opinion the portions are a very generous size and they are always willing to accommodate any requests. We are coming here for our first Christmas day meal out and really looking forward to it. All the members of staff are lovely and you are always served with a smile by the very lovely and friendly waitresses. I would recommend this pub to everyone :)

This is now a tired pub that really needs a make over and the menu needs updating. The price is OK but only go here if you are really stuck for somewhere else to go.

I went to the Black Horse last night for dinner with my daughter. Haven't had the best of experiences in here over the past 6 months or so but decided to give it another try at it's so local.We both ate the rump steak, both medium. Although they were cooked slightly differently, I was more than happy wih my meal. The chips and onion rings were hot and crisp and the steak was tasty. We had the peppercorn sauce (in case the steak turned out to be tough and dry.....), so happy all round.The only let down was the length of time it took to get served (at 5:15PM and I didn't think the pub was particularly busy)The outside tables had been neglected, ashtrays and glasses accruing on all of them.But for 2 decent steak meals for £11, I'll go back.

the starters was nice we had a platter lots to eat then the mains was good i had steak and cheese with the cheese was strong which gave it the nice taste. the service was good and the price was not bad about £70 for 4 and 1 kids meal

had a gorgeous meal 2 courses it was yummy, only problem was meals were quite small, and wished they gave you a choice of veg or salad, but all in all scrummy.

Im the new manager at the blackhorse in illey Lane.My name is Paul I have been here now for just over 4 weeks now.My aim is to be the best pub in the area.We are still currently running Two for £10.99 Deal all day everyday.And our standards are improving every day.So if anybody has had a bad experience here,I Apologise,But pop in again and give us another Try.

Nothing more nothing less - except it is rather good value for money even without the special offers.

Called in at this country pub which used to have a good reputation. Never been before. We were really just after a quick warm meal after a busy day so we weren't here for any more than pub grub.First signs weren't good. Tired decor, giant TV blaring out Sky sports, tables with the varnish totally worn away in the centres. It seems to be now part of a chain, like so many are. My heart sank. But we were here and it was 8 pm by now.I had glazed chicken, jacket potato and salad. My wife had vegetable tagine and rice. We had to wait nearly 50 minutes for our food. The chicken was overcooked, dry and chewy. Burnt black on the edges, salad almost non-existent, and the jacket potato was warm (just) on the top, and stone cold on the bottom. The tagine was properly cold throughout and had no flavour or spices detectable. When we complained they took the tagine away, microwaved it and brought it back taken off the plate and in a large bowl!No offer of any extras or a discount. It was like it happened all the time. Not worth it, even for the specials prices.

We ate here on the 22/01/12 for my husbands birthday,9 of us went they fitted us in and watered and fed us in excellent style,service brilliant and friendly food great we had steaks,mixed grills,burgers,fish dish and kids meal plus delicous desserts (enormous ones)!!! Good general atmosphere mix of many people (Sky Sports) a must for my lads and though the t.v is on it doesnt interfere with your dining experience,it was busy but that made no difference to the excellent staff who seved us they made it look easy as pie well done keep up the good work!!!brilliant deals with 2 meals for £10.99 and the meals not on this offer were worth every penny...of my husbands money!!!

Eaten here several times and the food has been of good quality. I often find chips are poorly cooked but not here. They are delicious. I would say the main asset is the staff. Very pleasant and friendly staff who give the impression of caring about customers. Always a pleasure to eat here.

As the title suggests, I have visited this establishment twice and have not been disappointed.Firstly, I like real ales and this pub/restaurant serves a variety of them. The serving staff are knowledgeable and accommodating; a sample of each is no problem.The food menu is all encompassing, not " cordon bleu" but wholesome and great value. I had the traditional fish and chips, it was excellent with great flakes of cod in a light batter and real chips.It is difficult to write anything bad about this place, my two experiences have been really good.I think I will visit again and again.
