Scruffy, dirty and run down. Not quite sure if Im describing the pub or the bar staff. Both. We thought we'd give this place a chance under new management. What a mistake, it's got worse! First round - served 4 drinks without a single word from the bar staff. Asked for a large wine but not possible. No explanation why not. 2nd round - needed the glasses back from the 1st round so that they could be re-used as they didn't have enough. There were only 4 other people in the place. It smelt. It was scruffy and run down. It was so bad it was funny. Wont be going back.

Much improved. Decent new manager, who knows her stuff. Loves a joke and a bit of banter too, which is always good. Looking forward to the live music nights. Good luck.

Pub is dirty, ran down and managed by rude unpleasant people who speak appallingly to and about their customers! I would not visit again, and suggest others avoid!!!

Really dirty, like the furniture, floors, toilets and glassware. Staff really unpleasant, overheard being very unkind towards others customers (later discovered one was owner). Wouldn't return, do not recommend at all.

I actually find it very strange that this pub even offers an option for family and teens because trust me no teen or child with a parent will ever feel welcome at this pub!! Worst Pub experience I’ve had in all 44 years of my life, and most definitely the worst pub in thornbury

We had our annual skittles evening on Thursday and the staff made us very welcome. We ended the evening with fabulous pizza. Thank you

Place is run by horrible transphobes. Made us feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Please don't go here if you're queer or support our community. Dreadful experience and place. 0/5.

Visiting old friends today and we popped here for a drink as it’s one of their locals, didn’t check the reviews until after we had come home but I think some of the other reviewers either have the wrong pub or have an agenda. The pub was very clean and tidy and looks to have been recently decorated? The staff were friendly, the food was good, not brilliant but better than the average chain pub, the beer was excellent, we would return again any time.

Recently just visited this pub. Absolutely terrible experience. The staff made constant comments about ID’s and made us feel uncomfortable. We weren’t drinking we came for food and felt uncomfortable and he was very rude. His exact comments as soon as we walked through the door “everyone have ID’s” (in an angry tone and shouted) then progressively started to say “no ID no sale” “challenge 25” dropping constant hints and we only wanted food. Will not be returning and felt very depressed in the pub due to the atmosphere, no lighting and a horrible manager. I have never felt more patronised as a young woman than this man made me feel. He belittled me and my friends and we just didn’t feel as though we could stay. Absolutely appalled at this type of behaviour. dark and dingy and no welcoming presence. Would not recommend if you are in a happy mood because you will come and be depressed.

Found the place very dingy and dark, the landlord is extremely rude and doesn’t even give you the time of day, drinks are over priced and so is the food, and you can tell the food is just frozen product chucked in the oven, it’s not a sociable happy pub either like where you can normally a joke around with bar staff you can definitely NOT do that here, I went to the toilet and it smells awful like it hasn’t been cleaned in years, and the clearly don’t keep the actually pub clean in either, tables and floors are overly sticky, the chairs were very dusty I patted one of them and so much dust came out of them, THEY CLEARY DON’T CLEAN, they are very condescending people, DO NOT COME HERE

Went there this evening with family & friends, stayed on for a drink after the raffle, basically ended up getting picked on by the landlord & a few of his friends, felt I was going to get beaten up , not friendly at all , especially if you are not local , very upsetting . Won't be going back

This is a nice pub since it’s upgrade. The service is usually very good, and the gin cocktails are lush! What more can I say?

The Black Horse for me is probably the best pub in Thornbury for a few reasons. Firstly its a great family run affair, secondly the food is great and thirdly its just like a local community centre....with a bar and restaurant! The pub has just recently been refurbished to a very high standard, a great upgrade. Not too far from the town centre, the Black Horse offers more than just good food, it has like many establishments these days, a series of special events on during the week nights that are always well attended. This is a pub at the heart of its community, what more can you ask for.

Gone "down hill" since I used to use it between 1969 and 1973. It was quite new then, but 43 years later it does not seem to have been maintained suitably: tired and dingy. Needs a complete uplift.

Terrible service. Landlord & landlady rude & obnoxious. Unfriendly, unwelcoming atmosphere if you're not a regular. Landlady mouthing off in front of customers and landlord aggressive. Apart from that it's a good pub.

Completely ignored at bar area. Food was very bland. So many other nice restaurants in Thornbury to choose, would pick one of them.

A genuine locals Estate style boozer with a remarkable range of home cooked pub standards at very competitive prices.Opens up like a tardis at the back with the public bar and functions room.Plenty of seating on the front patio and good sized car park.My 8oz rump steak (£7.95) was top quality and really tasty.Served with onion rings, peas and (my choice) salad rather than chips.Tribute (£3.30) was as clear as a bell.Menu had a lot of obviously home cooked goodies, particularly pies.By way of price comparison,I later stayed at the Swan Hotel Almondsbury.Although i was not eating there,an 8oz rump steak on their menu (OK with fancy triple cooked chips and meat of 'provenance') was £18.50.Which only goes to highlight the excellent value at the Black Horse.

Just ordered 2 pizzas. The guy made and cooked the first one and put it in the box then made the 2nd which took a further 20mins. When I mentioned this he gave me a smug grin and said he'd make them again, which considering I'd waited nearly 40mins wasn't an option. Meanwhile the guy at the till returned from Tesco, handling coins and returned to collecting food without washing his hands. When I pointed this out he just frowned and grunted at me. Pizzas really weren't great. Very greasy and tough bases. Won't be going back.

Great outdoor space, will certainly be popular when the sun shines more! We went on a Friday evening, it got packed after 20:00. Lots of younger people Nice atmosphere!

The second they bring you disgusting processed mustard in a plastic sachet you've got an instant clue to the level you're dealing with. And it's not premium. The cut, quality and prep of the meat was dubious, the veggies variable, some quite nice. The crumble really oversugared likely packet derived bleurrgh. The portion size was excellent. Service slightly confusing I couldn't tell who to order from or ask for things different people seemed to be doing different things puzzling. Also seemed to be quite a bit of waiting around considering they didn't seem busy. They were pleasant though. Really overpriced for what it is. I paid extra for cauli cheese and stuffing. Yorkshire pud is extra too! Everything extra! I feel a bit ripped off tbh I paid £61 for 2 roasts 1 pudding and 2 soft drinks and it was really average..

I'm truly saddened to learn about the closure of this venue. Whenever I visited Bristol for work, it was my top choice for dining. The staff here has consistently exceeded my expectations, with many of them having been a part of my visits for years. Issy, Daniel and Luke have consistently delivered exceptional service, always greeting me with a warm smile and a touch of humor. Their natural ability in customer service is remarkable. As this chapter closes, I can only hope that they find suitable employment in a similar industry where their talents can continue to shine. This establishment has consistently provided great quality and value in both food and drinks, making it a memorable part of my Bristol experiences.
