Black and White Fish and Chips Takeaway in North Devon

Looking forward to a chip supper I ordered a steak and kidney pie and chips, not difficult one would have thought. However, the pie was just zapped in the microwave and turned out to be completely inedible as the pastry was like tired old leather. And the staple of a Chippy, the chips. Well they were stone cold , flacid excuses for chips. Pretty much all the meal ended up in the bin.

I think we must have been very unlucky Wednesday last week. Been coming here for years and worth the drive over from Mortehoe but not this year . One cod and chip ( split between 2 ) 3 scampi and chips £50.20. Which we ate in the car from a view point. When we opened the scampi boxes the scamp crumb was all dark brown , almost burnt clearly too hot fat, not overcooked as the scampi was moist . Taste passable but two out of 3 who had scampi were ill in the night . The cod was ok nothing special but the chip were cold. Tried ringing next day but no answer Sure we were overcharged too but didn’t check the prices until later. I think they must have charge for 2 cod and chips not 1 shared. Never had a problem before but won’t bother next year

We had a great fish and chips dinner, it was all freshly cooked and honestly we said it was the best we’d had for a long time! We took them down to the beach and enjoyed them with the waves crashing in the background. The guys behind the counter really welcomed our two young boys asking them what they wanted. If we lived closer we’re be back for sure, for any tourists in the area, we can highly recommend!

Was very much looking forward to chip shop chips, they tasted more like grease than chips. I’m not sure if they had been sat there a while (it was 5.10pm) but they were dreadful a waste of £4.80!! Will not be returning!

Quite a queue when we arrived at 7pm and we finally got served at 7.45pm. This wasn't a problem as I'd read the reviews and noted about the queues. Thought this was a good sign. I do think think though 8pm close on a Saturday night is far too early, obviously they need some near by competition! Now for the real reason for my poor score. The fish was lovely and meaty though for a large size it definitely wasn't large.! The chips were dreadful! Admittedly I managed to eat a few of mine before dumping them in the bin and what I did eat I didn't enjoy, where as my husband had to leave most of his. A lot of the chips were grease soaked and hollow. A waste of £25.

Friday night takeaway fish and chips from the Black and White is obviously an institution in Combe Martin and we had to queue. But it was worth it: really excellent cod, scampi and chips. And very friendly service. £45.30 paid for a feast for five.

We always come here when we visit Combe Martin. Very friendly and attentive staff, excellent service, generous portions and the chips are amazing. We usually have to queue because they’re so popular and busy but they’re very quick and it’s always worth the wait!

Popped in after a trip to the beach. Fantastic food chips were perfect . Chip shop was very busy being a Saturday night but was served in good time and by friendly staff thankyou it was scrumptious!!

Was driving through Combe Martin and saw this fantastic looking chip shop open. Parked up and ordered myself cod and chips , it was delicious.Best I’ve had in a long time and very generous with their portions. I will be back with the family .

Recommended to come here by a local while we were here on holiday. Told to come early as there may be a queue. He was right got there at 5.30 and there was a queue. But worth the wait, This was the best Fish & Chips me and my husband have had for a long time. Portion size was great, chips were so tasty, the batter on the fish was crispy and well cooked. We are here for another week so will be heading here a few more times we think.

Beautiful fish & chips with excellent efficient service. Rang ahead to order for 10 people which was no problem. Good value for money and very large fish. Highly recommend.

Absolutely delicious fish and chips, fish was crispy and the chips were freshly fried, the place was busy but was fast and really friendly service, it’s near the beach so a bit of queue but you know it’s good if you’re having to queue, highly recommended for LGBTQ+ travellers

Been visiting the area for years and after trying most of chip shops always go to Black & White the best we have found in the area. Usually have them day we arrive and again on the evening, day before leaving. Freshly cooked and friendly staff.

Took an order in at lunchtime yesterday for nine people for collection at 18:30. Ready for about 18:40, great because we were all starving. Got it back to accommodation to find we were missing two large cod, a small fish and a large sausage. Wouldn't have been so bad if the chips were delicious but they really weren't so some very disappointed family members. Wouldn't use again

Evening we arrived in Coombe Martin we walked past the B & W and there was a queue up the road,always a good sign👍. Decided that Fish and Chips on the sea wall after sunset would be a good idea, it sooo was! Staff are super friendly and the food was excellent! Fabulous fish and chips. There was a queue outside so there was a short wait to be served but it was worth the wait. All of the staff were so polite and friendly, probably the most positive experience I have ever had in a fish and chip shop. The food was absolutely delicious, lovely and light batter and the large cod my husband had was huge! The chips were lovely and crispy and not at all soggy. We took our meal to the beach a short walk away and enjoyed eating it in the early evening sun.

Read the good reviews on here before my holiday in Combe Martin last week, so thought I would give this a try. Chips from holiday places are usually very good, but these were very poor. The texture of the chips were nothing like quality chips....

Stood outside in the pouring rain for 20 minutes to order fish and chips and wasn't disappointed by what I got, lovely fresh food and once I put my order in it was served up really quickly.

Last minute just before they shut but still sorted us out with some brilliant food. The food tasted fresh and was fantastic. It was only after having this that you realise that other fish and chip shops aren’t as good as you thought.

We used this chippy as it was fairly close to our accomodation and didn't mind the que; as it was peak time. However, they leave the skin on the fish; which some people may like, but not for us I'm afraid. The chips were also rather greasy and unappetizing. There is another chippy in Combe Martin(see our review)which we found to be immeasurably better.

Absolutely delicious fish and chips! We visited twice on our holiday in Combe Martin, on the first night (Saturday) we qued for around 45 minutes for the fish and chips. We visited again on a Thursday and was straight in and out. We tried cod & haddock both of which was very nice!

After a couple of hours on the beach we decided to pop up the road to have fish and chips for lunch. The service was friendly and Covid safe. We waited for a few minutes outside for our order to be ready and after reading previous reviews couldn't wait to tuck in. Unfortunately we were disappointed to find the meal was tasteless and the batter was greasy on the top and soggy and mushy underneath. If we visit the area again we will try somewhere else.

Came here during family summer holiday. Very well organised with regards to COVID guidelines. All food is cooked fresh and portion sizes are very generous. Little on the expensive side but you expect that from a chip shop on the coast and don't mind paying it for quality food. Will return when next in the area.

Ordered a variety of meals with chips including fish, pie and sausage. All were excellent but the chips were the highlight. Really well done in an oil that gives them a bit of crispness. Would not hesitate to visit again.

Always good here, cant believe the pathetic people that write a bad review to a local business during difficult times, cannot heat up baby food for a reason, there are 3 good chippys in north devon, this, the pelican and the one one by the old Tescos in town.

Great fish and chips, served virtually straight away. Chips particularly good. We visited Devon and Combe Martin on the 13th July soon after some of the lock down restrictions were lifted. Because there were so few people it felt like May rather than July

Worst chippy in Devon Rude staff cannot count that’s why maybe they have aspired to work in a chippy. Warning watch the social distancing they cannot count how many customers are in the shop mind you not surprised they cannot count. Food was greasy and all left over batter left me with a bad stomach shop around. Returning customers get priority over new customers be prepared for a long wait if you decide to buy from here

Just went to order dinner was left standing for 10 minutes for the man to then let someone else into the shop to take their order. Was ignored the whole time. Only was it when the young boy pulled him to one side to say I was first and been waiting 10 minutes for my order to be taken did he then reluctantly come over and say what do you want rudely. Maybe because I'm not a local he thinks its acceptable. Rude and nasty definitely wont be going in there again.

Cannot go wrong with the Black & White Chippy in Combe Martin. Very good size portions for exceptionally reasonable prices. The qualtiy of the Fish & Chips is the best in North Devon, but unlike many others they do not crow about it. Definately worh a visit.

Popped in here recently and as fish and chips go you can't go wrong. Friendly staff, big portions and a lush Cornish pastie. Definitely recommend if you fancy chips in the area.

Whilst on holiday we decided to have fish and chips one night. We ordered a large cod and small place with large chips that we shared. The food was cooked to perfection and very tasty, which was good valve for money. I would recommend this fish and chip shop.

I called in at the Black and White, early evening, for my takeaway dinner. Just a modest fish cake and chips. I have not tasted such lovely, hot chips in a long time! The fish cake also was delicious, and such a warm welcome from staff
