Situated alongside the River Wear this is a nice cafe set over two floors. Order at the counter and they delivery your food and drinks to your table. We enjoyed our coffee and scone selections for a mid-morning pit stop. Prices OK and hard-working staff friendly and helpful. Only one small criticism, the gents toilet needs a little TLC, starting with a brighter light! In these days of efficient and cheap LED fittings it wouldn’t take much expense to brighten the place up.

Visited Durham last Bank Holiday weekend as I hadn't been for ages. Had a lovely wander along the river and through the cathedral grounds. As it was exceptionally hot and sunny we decided to find somewhere shady and pleasant to grab a light snack. The unusually named Biz-R seemed to fit the bill, with shaded outdoor seating ideal for a spot of people watching. Ordered two ham and cheese toasties, a glass of Coke and a chamomile tea - all for less than a tenner. Toasties were very nice, very simple with no garnish or side salad. Food and drink arrived promptly. Service was friendly and efficient. Biz-R was an ideal choice for what we wanted - a quick bite and a drink - and I wouldn't hesitate to return for more of the same next time I'm in Durham.

This is in a good location, where all the recent developments with the cinema complex have been taking place. The building is large and there is plenty of seating. The staff were OK, could maybe do with a little more training. Food range is average too, nothing special. The espresso I ordered was nice and bitter but the standard black coffee was too hot for proper coffee, it affected the taste too much.Overall, it's OK.

I’m a big fan of the Biz r in Sunderland, there Durham outlet is good and the coffee is way above average. The big issue I have after attempting to buy a large coffee and a bacon sandwich today is a minimum spend of £5 to use a contactless debit card. In today’s modern world this is a very old way of operating a business which meant the cashier refused to serve me as I didn’t have any cash.

This non-chain coffee house has a good range of coffees, made with plenty of oomph... and a wide array of attractive cakes and tray bakes, but so soon after breakfast, they had to be avoided. It's seems to be a good place to meet up with friends, not too noisy. But it's perhaps not the sort of place for a lazy break on your own as they don't really have cosy corners to curl up in, The attempts to look ramshackled area mixing round a couple of different sets of chairs.

I’ve just recently discovered Biz R, it’s mostly a mix of the standard distressed tables and chairs that you’d expect, but it feels like a place where you can relax and unwind instead of go in, have a quick coffee, go elsewhere. There is a Starbucks very nearby, but that is always crammed full with uni students, I’m happy they haven’t yet discovered this little gem. Biz R has an atmosphere different to many Durham coffee houses I’ve visited, if you can get an upstairs window seat there is a grand view of Durham Castle and Cathedral. Set just on the outside of “The Gates” Biz R offers easy access to the Market Place, Prince Bishop shopping centre, the Passport Office and other Durham city tourist attractions including a most pleasant river bank walk.It offers a decent selection of pastries, scones, paninis etc. and the usual array of coffees. Place your order at the counter, take a seat and the friendly staff will deliver to the table. For me it’s a good feeling, ploughing through my newspaper, listening to the light jazz background music and the coffee which makes it even better. In a city centre that’s crammed full of the usual coffee chains, Biz R is a welcome oasis.

A recent trip to Durham started with us grabbing a quick bite in Biz R which is just at the entrance to The Gates mini teeny tiny shopping centre. We ordered drinks and a tuna and cheese melt and made our way to a table and waited for our treats. I was a bit worried when I had a large amount of change from my tenner as I'm used to paying Starbuck prices so I resigned myself to the "fact" that it was all going to be rubbish... How wrong was I?It seemed that the orange juice I ordered was fresh (I'm fairly certain this was only a couple of quid) as I saw that they had juicing machine behind the counter. The flat white coffee came in a large cup full to the brim, and the tuna and cheese melt came with a handful of what looked like hand-cooked crisps. There was plenty of drinks choice on the menu board and there seemed to be lots to choose from sandwich and cake wise. All in all, a very nice alternative to the likes of your Starbucks and your Costa's.

Because Biz R is tucked away on the approach to the Gates Shopping Centre it is often overlooked. Visitors are looking up to the castle and cathedral over the bridge and locals are probably still thinking of it in one of its previous incarnations. I think it used to be an Italian bistro but I may be wrong. It does have outdoor seating so hopefully people will notice it. Inside Biz R is spacious and has seating on two levels so doesn't feel crowded. From the upstairs windows you can see the castle. Having eaten at most of the coffee shops in Durham this is not one of my favorite ones. Saying that I still feel it beats the chain cafes. It is interestingly decorated with good background music to create an nice ambiance. However I did find it surprisingly quiet in here, considering the rest of the coffee houses in Durham were packed. This can be an advantage when struggling to get seated somewhere but it did make me wonder why there were so few people here.Biz R has wi-fi, however you have to register to use it. When registering it asks for your mobile number to verify your account. I felt loath to submit my mobile phone number, as did the person I was there with. We decided not to use the wi-fi for this reason. I feel these days wi-fi can be quite a selling point, especially for students who quite often like somewhere they can work whilst eating their lunch and drinking coffee. I wonder how many other people would feel uncomfortable with the information required for the wi-fi registration.I had a cappuccino which was good. I then went to order lunch. They have a range of paninis, toasties, soup and pasta to choose from and they are all reasonably priced.I do not eat white bread including ciabatta, however they did have some brown bread. I asked if I could have one of the panini fillings but in a toastie instead. They said they could make me a toastie in brown bread but I could not chose to have the panini filling. With little toastie choice (due to being a vegetarian) I went for a rather boring cheese and tomato toastie, when really I was fancying the pesto, tomato and mozzarella filling. I cannot really see why this could not be done. Most other places I go to are quite accommodating when I have asked them to do something like this. The staff themselves I found to be friendly and polite. Service was also fast and efficient. I did not have any dessert, however the cakes did look nice. I think this is a place I would visit for coffee and a sweet snack rather than for lunch again.

While the rest of the town was busy this lovely quiet cafe was a perfect place to shelter from the persistent rain and hoards of shoppers. The coffee was excellent and the range of home made cakes on offer is fantastic. My only worry is that it was too quiet for a Saturday lunch hour. This is the nicest cafe I have been to in Durham and want it to survive - so please visit!!!!

A lovely little cafe on 2 floors, with excellent food, service and ambiance. This is a superb place to eat, relax and chat. We found this by chance, but will certainly keep going back. Everything was clean & tidy, toilets included, with a range of food and drink to satisfy all tastes.

We have been here a few times now and every time received great service. Coffee is far superior to the likes of Costa, Nero, Starbucks etc. they have a good selection of cakes, toasties and other food, which again, is much better than what you'd find in a chain coffee shop! The cafe is clean and tidy and having been there around 5 times now, it has never been busy. The cups are always clean and so is the cutlery (marked or dirty cutlery always makes me shudder when I enter a coffee shop chain!) On the whole, it's reasonably priced but fantastic quality. Great service too!

In my opinion, this is by far the best coffee shop in Durham. The paninis are always delicious, as are the cakes and my husband gives the coffee a thumbs up. The place is spotless and the staff are friendly. The place just has a lovely vibe about it.

...as all the other coffee shops we passed were full, or closing as it was 5pm on a Saturday. tucked in just off silver street as you head into milburngate. spotlessly clean, good prices, delish muffins (we tried apple and ginger and blueberry with cream cheese)- lots of space between the eclectic mix of tables and chairs, which can't be said for all Durham's coffee shops - and quite a few round tables for odd numbers!. nicely decorated- with wood floors and ambient lighting it felt modern and comfortable but not factory produced like costas/starbucks if you know what I mean. we will be back and will go upstairs as I'm hoping there will be a view of the castle from there..and even tho it was late and near closing time we were still made to feel welcome and weren't rushed. another nice touch was the small jug of hot water to add as required to your pot of tea - which of course made it go further. Durham has quite a few really good coffee/tea shops and I think we have found another one here - we were impressed

Spot on espresso blueberry muffins out of this world! Similar style to Starbucks but far better prices and without any doubt higher quality coffee. Staff are normal human beings, pleasant and not all superficial like many coffee shops have become (with the 'fake' how are you and onto the next customer before you open your mouth and as soon as they have your dosh) . The temperature of the 3 lattes i have had there were spot on too... no burnt milk, nice texture. New to durham but if they stick at this standard am sure they will be a huge success.
