We visited this bistro as we were staying nearby. We prebooked a table on two occasions, but there was plenty tables available while we were there. This would be different at peak season. The food selection is good, and well cooked and very tasty. The food is plentiful on the plate. Service was a bit slower on our second visit but did not detract from the meal. One thing to remember is to take your receipt as you get a discount in the distillery shop.

As a birthday treat my partner booked us on for a distillery tour and tasting session. As we needed to drive up, check in at the place where we were staying and then walk over to the distillery, she'd also booked us in at the Bistro for lunch. The reason she did this was simply because we'd be ready for food at this point and we weren't expecting anything beyond pretty standard fayre. How ridiculously wrong can you be? I have absolutely no problem in holding my hand up on this one. The food, the service, the place, the environment was absolutely outstanding. We were only saying yesterday how much we both want to return. We've done the distillery tour and the tasting (both informative and excellent) but we're now looking to return to the area just to eat at the Bistro again. Seriously - that good.

Extremely disappointing experience. Took half an hour to be served with a carafe of tap water (they don't serve bottled water). After waiting a further 30 minutes for our order we decided to leave, watched wordlessly by a couple of staff members.

Having been disappointed at a Michelin Guide and a One Michelin star restaurant this week, our expectations on arrival were low. Make no mistake, the set up here is impressive, from the car park to the location on the banks of the Derwent (and a field of Alpacas thrown in), not to mention the fantastic building and facilities. The food definitely matched up to the surroundings. I had a tomato soup starter with bread and butter. The taste was great - not overly creamy, so the taste of the tomatoes was sufficiently strong. The main, a mushroom tagliatelle, was cooked to perfection with plenty of seasoning and lots of mushrooms. The perfect portion size as well- plentiful without being too much. My partner had the beef stew, which was also excellent. Finally, the vanilla cheesecake was exquisite. Sometimes, you find that they undercook or overcook the taste, but this was spot on. Fresh strawberries and strawberry ice cream accompanied, with the ice cream seemingly homemade. Unfortunately, the chef is leaving this week, having been there for 15 years, but we were reassured that he will be handing over to competent colleagues who trained under him. All in all an excellent experience, and we will be back.

We each had a cappuccino followed by a hot chocolate. Both fine. Also asked for some biscuits. Disappointingly, only one shortbread biscuit each was brought, the size of a hobnob although slightly thinner. The bill for the 2 biscuits was £3.40 - a bit excessive!

My partner and I having travelled for 2.5 hours to the Lakes from Cheshire arrived cold and hungry and an hour early for our booking. The staff were friendly and accommodating, despite our arrival at 11.00am, seating us in a lovely section of the Bistro with drinks (a few warming GnTs from the distillery even at the hour of the morning was felt necessary!), whilst we waited for the menus to be printed out. It was worth the wait. The food was simple, honest and of exceptional quality and value for money, exceeding other Bistros/Brasseries in the area. A must visit!

Amazing place. We were an hour early for a tour of the distillery , and popped in for lunch. Very friendly staff, varied menu of local produce. We both had salads, one Thai beef and one pulled chicken. They were amazing. Table next to us had the open sandwiches which looked just as delicious. We were expecting much, but this place totally surprised us with the quality of food and the service.

After reading all the reviews we booked afternoon tea…and we weren’t disappointed. The afternoon tea we received was very good and with a few small changes could be excellent. Firstly I would have cut the sandwich into half from corner to corner, then I would make the afternoon tea suitable for two as the amount of food is just too much.We mentioned this to a member of staff and he said this was not the first time this had been said.. All this said we will go back again..

We ate here before doing the whisky tour. We have been to the distillery before but have never eaten at the bistro. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Good quality ingredients and very tasty. Service was quick, which was great as we didn’t have a lot of time before our tour started. Would definitely go back to try other items on the menu.

Drinks were nice and cool and cakes were fresh and delicious.Service was outstanding. Server was very helpful in helping us choose what to order. It was a shame that due to the time we arrived, main food was unavailable. Make sure to arrive 12pm onwards for food.Overall, would recommend and likely to visit again.

Booked in to eat at the bistro as the distillery tours didn't fit in with our plans. The bistro was clean, modern and relaxing. The staff were out of this world and their passion for the distillery was brilliant. Our waiter was so helpful and knowledgeable and certainly went the extra mile. The food was delicious. I can recommend the Sunday dinner (with huge Yorkshire puds) and the delicious cheese soufflé.As we were staying close by we had the gin and vodka flights. The manager explained these with passion and a high level of knowledge. The whole experience was just brilliant. If you are staying close by, walk or get a taxi as it's an experience you do not want to miss. The shop had a great selection and was cheaper than purchasing in other stores around The Lakes.I can highly recommend.

We visited to eat at the Bistro having eaten there a few times before. Food was tasty but very expensive for what it was. I had chicken schnitzel with fried egg and thin cut chips. It was £17.50 for essentially chicken and chips. I like to think that the chicken was free range and British and that the egg was free range but probably wishful thinking and wasn't described as such. Suspect the chips were frozen. No veg or salad on the plate so all looked a bit sparse. My husband had a burger with the thin cut chips. No side salad or anything and that was £16.50. A side salad would have been an extra £4! And then they add a voluntary 10% service charge onto your bill - but this can be requested to be removed (which makes you feel awkward). Such a shame as this used to be one of our favourite places but unlikely to go back now as is just too expensive. Staff all friendly.

Each year dear old Grandma visits the lakes for a couple of weeks to spend some time with my parents - I live just down the road. As a small and random treat, my partner and I took Grandma to lunch after a previous visit to the distillery. The service was efficient and friendly, being sat at a comfortable table and being very accommodating for Gran. The drinks order was taken and arrived in good time. The food menu had a good variety and waiters worked well as a team to ensure that the experience was smooth, enjoyable and well orchestrated. The food arrived in good time and was very enjoyable. What more can I say on this front? We loved it! One point I will comment, as someone who has waited silver service, I enjoyed the waiting staff's professionalism and flow as a team. The atmosphere was spot on!

We visited the distillery for a tour and thought we'd get a spot of lunch in beforehand. The setting of the bistro is crisp and clean. An enjoyable environment. The menu was quite spartan. We both chose the same main and the same dessert, owing to a limited choice. Whether this their menu or a covid thing I don't know. We had the chicken schnitzel followed by the whisky caramel. Both were tasty, well cooked and nicely presented. However, the schnitzel came with mayonnaise which they had decided to smear all over the top. I would have much preferred the flexibility of the sauce on the side. Wife was happy though - probably just a personal choice.Service was friendly and attentive.

The weather was on our side so we sat in the courtyard, and we were treated to some excellent dishes sourced locally (and you could tell!) which were very much enjoyed. We came here as a couple with our one year old son and were pleasantly surprised with the service we received. Always slightly nervous turning up to a smart restaurant with a baby but the staff were amazing. They had plenty of high chairs and provided us with some crayons and paper for colouring. They also had a children’s menu. We found the menu very difficult to choose from as so many delicious choices and an extensive drinks menu too! We went for the truffle burger and halibut, both of which we can highly recommend. We also had to have a rhubarb and custard crumble which was melt in the mouth. We paid around £35 per head for two courses and an alcoholic drink. Very smart surroundings and attentive staff. We popped into the distillery shop afterward and received even more exceptional customer service there too.

On our last day of the holiday in the lakes, we decided to come to the distillery and do the tour, followed by lunch at the bistro. The tour itself was excellent and really interesting, followed by a bit of tasting of the vodka, whiskey and gin which was great! What I loved was the food in the bistro though. I had one of their own gins and a toastie, my mum had the eggs and mushrooms on toast and my dad had the chicken schnitzel which was topped with fried eggs and truffle mayo and served with thin fries. Every dish was delicious - I shared half and half with my mum and her eggs were out of this world! Would definitely recommend both things there - tour and bistro to follow. I have eaten here on numerous occasions and always been impressed by the quality of the food and service. The price is quite high but not too expensive for the Lake District. I have recently been there and took advantage of the Eat Out to Help Out deal, giving 50% off food Mon to Wed. My family and I had really nice meals and great prices to match. And now comes the gripe. Receiving the bill, the total cost seemed great and I paid using my card. However, when looking more closely, a few minutes later, it seems that the restaurant added an "Optional Service Charge " which amounted to 10% of the bill before government discount! Surely if it's optional I should have been asked if that charge was OK? I was not asked! We then queried the payment and told that the charge would be refunded to the card. I think that this makes for an uncomfortable moment and this charge should not be added without consultation with the customer. Still a great place to eat but tarnished the experience.

Today was not as enjoyable unfortunately. It felt like a mixture of the current climate, dislike for "non-locals", ageism or a cocktail of everything. It was a super quite late afternoon with an abduances of staff available but none wanting to actually provide service to us. However a table of elderly local folks next to us were regularly checked up on and offered drinks and further courses. We did not receive such attentive care unfortunately which was a real shame because we used to love visiting the bistro and spending a few Bob in the gift shop. We came here twice during our 4 day stay. The menu is a bit special and the food was very good. I had the Cumbrian Farmhouse Cheese and Spinach Soufflé which I loved. The fish, steak and chicken dished we had were all very good.

This used to be a must if in the area but has lost the edge it once had. The last twice we have visited now the food was just not 100%. The Distilers lunch was just not quite right the picallily was lacking the pork pie was too cold the apple described as a granny smith was red, only one pat of butter for 2 slices of bread and 6 crackers. Just little things but enough to take the edge of the meal.

A varied menu (with a fixed price two/three course option) using fresh, local ingredients. Dishes are imaginative and very tasty with generous quantities of key items. Cooking is spot on with no hint of food being overcooked, dry or lacking in care. Salad items are very fresh and full of flavour. Desserts are delicious and all dishes are beautifully presented.

What a charming and lovely place to eat, good menu and decent prices for top notch food, prepared freshly for you. A superb atmosphere and being able to see the pass with your food being prepared is a bonus.

This is a great venue which deserves to do well but our experience last night was not good. We waited a long time for food and when it arrived it had been standing for some time. The medium rare was medium and the fish was a very small portion. They generally seemed understaffed. Service was slow and not at all proactive. When presented with the bill an apology was given but that was it. A discount was eventually given after protest. Staff need to be better trained to deal with situations like this - the guy who served us was friendly but poorly supported. The menu was just ok but did not represent good value for money. In a competitive environment these guys need to sharpen their act.

After our distillery tour we popped in here for lunch. It was very quiet and our order was taken quickly. There was a bit of a wait for food but my homemade courgette and pea soup was worth waiting for. My partner really enjoyed his sausage and mash served with crispy onion bits. If you book a trip to the distillery I would recommend eating here after.

The service was efficient and friendly. The food was of a good quality and cooked well. It’s a bit overpriced. The interior is smart.

Most of our dishes were very good, especially the soufflé. The only one that let the side down was the prawn and avocado salad which was decidedly average and there was obviously a severe shortage of avocado!

My family and I visited the distillery for the tour and the alpaca feeding, which were both excellent. We had an hour between the distillery tour and the alpaca feeding so we thought we’d have some lunch as we’d travelled 2 hours to get there that morning and hadn’t eaten much. We heard the waiter telling someone else that food would be a 45 minute wait which was fine as we had an hour and a half to kill. We then overheard that it would be an hour, which for us was still okay as we had nowhere else to be. The waiter then told us that they weren’t serving food but we could have a cake which agreed to as we were very hungry. As we ate our cakes we noticed that every other table around us were being served hot food. When we enquired we were told that the kitchen was at capacity and they will only honour those who had a booking with food.

We had booked a distillery tour in advance as well as feeding the alpacas and we had an hour or so to eat between our two activities. The bistro came highly recommended by a family member who was also part of our party, so we were looking forward to our meal at the bistro.

Excellent service and food. Our party of 9 all enjoyed lunch here. My nephew loved the fish and chips and the little touches of fresh lemon and a pot of tartare sauce to make it more grownup. Good selection of hot and cold beverages and alcoholic drinks with cocktails and mocktails on the menu. All staff were very professional and really helpful assisting my mam in her wheelchair holding and opening doors and moving tables n chairs for her so she could sit at the table comfortably. They open on a night too. I would definitely eat here again when I'm in the area.

The Lakes Distillery makes much of it’s awards for tourism as well as for it’s spirits. It’s also quite boastful of it’s Bistro. God knows why?

The best dog friendly cafe in the lakes. Gorgeous food and the warmest welcome. This is our go to place when walking in the north lakes. All of the food always hits the spot but the cakes are just gorgeous!

Thought we would give this place a try as we saw it when coming back from Lodore Falls a few weeks ago and thought location was good. Booked Sunday lunch for 2 adults and 2 teenagers as a pre-Christmas family lunch out. On arrival no one greeted us and we waited in line at the bar to be told, not shown to, which one our table was and to come back to the bar to order. This is fine but at hotel restaurant I would expect staff to come and take our order - main course Sunday lunch £24.95, burgers the kids had £21.95 so not cheap. Inn on the Lake Glenridding for example is less expensive and far superior in location, class, service and food quality. I ordered roast beef and when it arrived I actually got lamb - no problem mistakes happen - but it did mean i had to wait for it to be replaced whilst the rest of my family ate their meals. When beef arrived it was dried out, as if heated under a grill. No one checked on us during the meal but asked if everything was ok when they came to clear. I told them my beef wasn't great - half of it uneaten - and they said i should have told them and they would have replaced. Fine, but bearing in mind i had already waited for it to be replaced once and eaten after others had finished i didn't really want to go for round 3. My meal was removed from the bill but the experience for a family lunch out was spoilt. We were in the restaurant area that doesn't allow dogs but close to the open doors to the dog friendly area - I love dogs but the smell coming through wasn't pleasant from time to time, especially when eating. Generally i think it is expensive and disappointing for what it is, pub type service and food at restaurant prices. £9.50 for puddings for example is excessive for the environment. A shame as location is great to stop for lunch if walking around Derwentwater but I wouldn't recommend based on pour experience today. As a final comment the staff did seem genuinely apologetic.

I visited Oilys with family and just after the meals were served my brother had taken ill. One member of staff in particular was so helpful and attentive. Part way through the meal we had to leave to take my brother home and the same lady offered to box up all our meals for us as we had only started. Excellent service. The meals were delicious and it is just a shame we had to leave early. Luckily my brother is okay and we will have to go back sometime for a better experience.
