Thought we'd give it a shot to have real seafood, not fish and chips. They do have real seafood, but a very limited menu, and the chef seems to be a bit afraid of spices and salt. Fairly bland food overall, though the balsamic reduction on the veg was nice. It didn't help that when we asked for salt (there was none on the table) it exploded on the side of my wife's plate. Luckily, most of the salt explosion stayed on the side, leaving just enough on the food to make it OK. I didn't argue the bill, but I also don't think I'd return.

I was charmed to come , by chance, upon reviews for this lovely little hotel. I have very fond memories of it, as my late husband and I spent the first night of our honeymoon there, in May, 1953, arriving on our bikes having travelled from South London. Must also say how horrified I was to see the pictures of the crowds there yesterday. We were literally the only people on the beach way back! B.

We wandered in at lunchtime looking for a snack and coffee as a break from walking the coastal path. After a chat with the owner we ended up sitting in the garden, in the sunshine, with a cafetiere of freshly made coffee and a large slice each of delicious cheesecake - not what we had originally planned but most enjoyable nevertheless. It also turned out to be very good value for money!

We had perused the eating places in Lolworth and based on the sign saying Mussel Madness we went in. Slightly chaotic in the bar, but once that resolved itself we found a table inside and ordered. The Chef took our order and delivered the mussels, they were wonderful. Tasty, perfectly cooked and delicious. The chef noted we had mussel liquor left and bought us bread to mop it up., brilliant. We weren’t staying in Bishops, but as far as the food is concerned. Definitely worth a visit.

Our daughter was getting married locally so we booked the entire hotel for the weekend. We hit the staff with everything - disabled child in a wheelchair; no dairy; vegetarian; celiac dining and a nonogenarian. The staff were excellent. Very friendly and accommodating. They devised and special evening meal for us and on the wedding day ferried food and refreshments up to my daughter's room. They worked their socks off to make the day and stay special. The road to the hotel is pedestrian only but they arranged for access for both the wedding car and the disabled persons vehicle to pick the guests up. The room's furniture was in some cases quirky and eclectic but so what the rooms were clean and comfortable. I have to say, we didn't experience any of negative things in some of reviews here. Would we stay again? Absolutely. By the way charging for the car park is nothing to do with the hotel.

Cold, dismissive greeting (not welcome) by the single staff member, who appeared not to give a single fig about guests or good service. Weird “welcome” from the owner/host. The bar was not at all stocked - hardly any soft drinks, no snacks, nothing on draft - neither the host, nor the staff member seemed to care! The shelves behind the bar were empty & thick dust, so this wasn’t a recent rush-and-sell-out! Generally the place was scruffy & grubby. Nice cats tho - purry & lap-warming!

Here's a list of issues I had with the room: - The carpet has a massive stain by the wardrobe/window which is horrible - The shower tray fills up with water when taking a shower - The room was extremely cold (I had to use heaters to warm up myself) - when both heaters were on the fuse box started tripping. I had to go downstairs twice to ask the night porter (who was very nice on the first night) on duty to turn it back on. - Furniture damaged - broken knob on chest of draws. - Stains on curtains - Keys got stuck in the lock multiple times

This place has a great location but lacks atmosphere and quality. The biggest complaint was the cold. You walk into the restaurant through the main door, and it is not really a restaurant but a large hall with tables in, so blasts of cold air come in each time the door is opened. The room is not warm anyway and then if you want the bathroom you have to put on coats to go to a pretty basic outdoor toilet. Service and food are average. If some luxurious furs were provided as wraps it would at least give you a feeling of being pampered and a way of staying warm. The chairs look great though.

We ate here today as a family of 4. To start with the positives - the food was lovely, the atmosphere of the venue was relaxing and the food was also reasonably priced. We ordered 3 roasts and 1 fish and chips. Unfortunately, our experience was hindered by the poor customer service we received from the manager and poor hygiene standards. On completion of our meal, we noticed a fly in the vinegar, which was used on the fish and chips. We informed our waitress (who was lovely - we have absolutely no complaints about her service) who then went to inform the manager. The manager promptly came over with the card machine to take our payment for the bill without addressing the issue. After asking if he had heard, he rather abruptly replied that he did not know how that had happened, offering no apology. We then said this had, obviously, put a dampener on the meal as we did not discover the fly until we had finished our food. Again, offering no apology, he said ‘well what do you want me to do?’. We felt this was quite aggressive and not how you should ever address your customer, especially when we have found a dead insect in our food. I was visibly shocked by this response and my parents feeling uncomfortable in the situation said there was nothing he could do. On reflection, we should have requested a refund of the fish and chips, but we were very taken aback by the rude manner of the manager and felt quite embarrassed about the situation. We almost felt as if we were being blamed for the fly! I would have expected a refund to be offered as we were very clearly unhappy with both the situation and the lack of resolution offered. Although the food was good, the service we received really altered our experience, and we would not visit here again.

We booked at Bishops as we had never been in there before on our many trips to Dorset. When booking, the restaurant looked very nice and the signs outside stated they were Michelin rated in 2014, 2015 & 2016. We were expecting a lovely Sunday roast...not so! When it arrived, there were 3 roast potatoes, pork, a dish of veg & parsnips. No Yorkshire puddings!! what decent Sunday roast doesn't have Yorkshires?? All in all an edible but basic roast not worth the Michelin rating or £12.50. Had much nicer in a Toby carvery for nearly half the price.

Picked this place because the menu on the gate looked good. Got in to be told by the rather rude dirty looking man that more than half the menu wasn't available. Maybe we should have left at that point but he did tell us they had mussels so we decided to stay. With no drinks menu's on the tables we took his advice on a local beer and glasses of Sauvignon, £8 a glass (this we didn't know until the bill came, extortionate in my view). Two dry lasagne's and weirdly dry mussels later, the bill was thrust onto our table with no "would you like anything else" guess he wanted us to leave? The bill was expensive this was due to being charged £8 for each glass of wine and £19.50 for each bowl of mussels, should have been £14.50! on querying this he told us we had been charged off the evening menu, really??? he gave us the menus, he took our order, he overcharged us. So if you are going to this place be sure to check what you have been charged. Helping yourself to a £10 tip is not acceptable in my world. On a further note the people on the table next to us were also over charged.

Family of four (with kids + two dogs) visited this gem of a restaurant in Lulworth for both Lunch and Dinner on consecutive days. Warmly greeted by Tim, and arriving slightly too early for dinner, decided to relax and have drinks whilst waiting for the restaurant to start serving at 6pm.Local Lulworth Lobster was truly amazing, the best i have ever eaten, and the Mussels were amazing too. Everything came out together, in a timely fashion, was fresh, locally sourced, hot and very well priced.Superb dinner and in a very relaxed environment - unlike other restarants it did not feel rushed - ignore the bad reviews - its true that you dont have waiters / waitresses hanging over your table constantly asking if the food is good after your first mouthfull - but i see this as a positive - no one bothering you whilst eating - not the case here - a refreshing change. To the bad reviewers - if you want something, or your food isn't as you would like it, just ask the staff - they would be more than happy to help i am sure. Was so good we decided to return for Lunch the next day, equally as good - and the kids enjoyed time in the on-site pool - which is included if you stay for lunch or dinner !In summary, if you want over exaggerate greetings, and constant attention from the staff, then go elsewhere - if you are looking for amazing fresh, local food in a relaxed / unhurried environment - then go to Bishops.

I didn't grab the name of the chap who dealt with us initially, or the waitress who served, but both warm and chatty. We grabbed a drink and sat out while the kids had an hour in the pool. Lunch was unhurried and perfectly fine. The food was fresh and hot when it arrived. Most of us then had a dip in the excellent pool to freshen up, caught the last few games of the ladies singles final on the TV inside, chatted with some other guests and continued on to Durdle Door. If that's how you roll normally, this is the place for you. If you need silver service staff and like being fussed over then avoid. It will be our first stop next time we visit.

We stayed for one night in Lulworth Cove and had the choice of three restaurants. We chose Bishops based on the menu, and the Guide Michelin listings. The food was OK - I had a goat's cheese starter and a main of moules mariniere, followed by cheese and biscuits. The waitress was entertaining - it was her first week, so we enjoyed a chat with her. The proprietor was in attendance. Unfortunately, we received the wrong wine, and, realising that our young waitress was new to the game, we decided not to make a fuss! Aren't we lovely? About 20% of the moules were unopened - quite disappointing to be honest. However, the cheese board was excellent - maybe a little over-generous, but the smoked cheese was absolutely spot on! With the level of competition in what is a very attractive and popular resort, we were only OK with our evening meal. Would we dine here again? Probably not.

My partner and I have visited Lulworth Cove on numerous occasions and always been intrigued by the advertised menu at Bishop's restaurant (noting the owner's aggressive responses when people place a restaurant review on the hotel site; although the two are obviously linked). Having read the mixed reviews on both sites, I decided to book for a Monday night anyway. On arrival the staff seemed surprised to see us, but once over their initial shock that someone was prepared to eat there, they offered us a choice of seating. We chose to sit outside initially and, whilst the restaurant was not busy, were reasonably well looked after by the female waitress. However, she was clearly more enthusiastic than professional and as the evening wore on, and the restaurant became busier, she became overwhelmed and we were largely ignored. There was also a male manager/waiter loitering, but it was difficult to identify what his role was. This poor level of customer service has been widely commented on by numerous reviewers and, as has been suggested, could easily be rectified by some rudimentary hospitality training - how hard can it be? This leads onto the cleanliness of the restaurant, which was not bad as long as you did not need to use the toilet (always a good indicator), which was not pleasant. Sadly, this poor service and disappointing cleanliness distracted from the food. The seafood, clearly fresh, was excellent; the scallops were delicious and the lobster superb - and great fun to eat. The Goat's cheese starter, sitting on traditional fried bread, was delicious. Again, this let down by the burger offering...very dry. Our experience ended with being ignored in the bar before being offered a selection of bills to choose from; a further demonstration of poor service. When this was finally sorted, we were about to be overcharged for our dinner. We had had two courses from the set menu and therefore the 'included' proscecco was extra! As this had not been made clear, we refused to pay and it was removed.Overall, an establishment with so much potential, but...

Went here to eat on a Sunday night and while the menu looked good and the food wasn't bad, the service and overall response was downright pitifull! As we walked in the lone waiter asked the owner, who was sitting down at a table having a drink, for help. There were about 13-14 tables in the outdoor yard, half of them full, and 1 table with 3 women inside who did not look happy. Other tables were not even set inside. The owner reluctantly sat us down and we almost left while waiting for him to take our order. They turned away 15 more people after us, while there were still 7 open tables at 7:30 PM. The owner couldn't wait to sit down again with his drink. As we walked out the gate we advised another couple not to waste their time.

Having walked past bishops a few times on our trips to the cove, and being super impressed by the delicious sounding menu we decided to make bishops the venue for our last night out on holiday. We had walked from durdle door over the hillside during the day and thought it best to make a reservation for dinner, as our children are only 8, 6 & 1 we opted for early dinner. After we walked back to base, relaxed a bit then got ready we drove over to the cove. As we arrived at around 6pm for our 6:15 reservation we had to pay for parking - minimum charge is £4 which would normally get us 2hrs parking but as the car park charge stops at 7pm we only needed an hour, no option for an hour though so £4 it was!We arrived at the restaurant and we were greeted by the same gentleman that had made our reservation earlier, his hand ere full of recently cleared plates but never the less he greeted us, asked if he could help, didn't remember us from earlier but Ince we said we'd reserved a table he nodded toward our table. We took our seats, sadly no high chair available for our little man. We then waited...After about 5 minutes the gentlemen from earlier was giving tips to staff, I therefore assume the gentleman in question is the owner, the tips were about placing cutlery and bottled tap water on tables - we were then presented with a bottle at which point I mentioned to my wife about ordering a drink, an acknowledgment from the owner was received swiftly followed by absolutely nothing! After another 5 minutes, my wife by this time becoming increasingly agitated a waitress walked past and literally threw a clipboard with menus attached to it onto the table, no communication, no explanation, nothing! So by this time we had been in the premises about 15 minutes, we had been given a bottle of tap water (as had all tables whether occupied or not), we'd been ignored when we requested drinks and we'd had a menu thrown at the table! As you can probably guess, our next move was to leave!I personally was gutted as the menu looked amazing! I was really looking forward to scallops & lobster BUT I have to say with the first 15 minutes like that there was no way we would be staying longer to be on the receiving end of yet more abysmal customer service and then be expected to pay for it!Bishops seems to have huge potential, in a beautiful picturesque location with thousands of passing tourists up & down to the cove it should be a gold mine. Warm & welcoming staff with simple and basic greetings such as the offer of a drink immediately upon arrival with menus provided, a brief run through of any house specials or whatever chef recommends for the evening would make a phenomenal difference. Sadly bishops was missing this for us tonight so we took our business elsewhere.I wish bishops well but please work on the meet & greet, get people in, give them a drink & a menu & then let the food do the talking because if it's as good as it reads on the menu outside, bishops should be cleaning up!

We are frequent visitors to Lulworth Cove. I wanted to try the lobster so we booked in at Bishops.Nice looking restaurant, clean & well presented.Have to say our lobsters were very nice indeed...however, boy did the service let it down!!Teenage girls with miserable faces serving the restaurant that evening. Out waitress had a face like thunder & did not smile all evening. Drinks were plonked on the table instead of placed & our drinks came in cans, yes cans!!! This did not fit in with the lovely setting, (after all it's not a roadside greasy spoon!)The waitress's were very casually dressed & would have benefited in wearing a smart waitress uniform.Sharpen up! Maybe things have improved now who knows? When paying these prices one expects service with a smile surely?! We are back in Lulworth in August & have to say, sadly we won't return, we'll stick to one of the other restaurants in the Cove. All in all, pretty place, not bad food, but please teach your staff to have standards, smile, be attentive to your customers, & do not serve drinks in cans at the table!!

We dropped in to look at the menu and ended up being persuaded to have dinner. After sitting at an outside table (we were told there were no tables available inside) for about 15 minutes & with the evening temps dropping we said we'd come back another night. The manager insisted we stay and said he'd find us a table inside (it did not seem too busy?) We chose the seafood platter for two. The scallops and langoustine were a bit over done and perhaps 25% of the mussels shells were empty although there we both had enough to eat. Perhaps the biggest criticism was the lack of service after placing our order. The waitress never once stopped by to ask if we were enjoying our meal or see if there was anything else we needed. After the meal I went up to reception desk and paid and left as the waitress seemed to have gone AWOL. I'm sure Bishop's could be a 4 or 5* review with some further attention to detail on the food and service.

From the very first encounter the staff were unfriendly and rude. We have a holiday home in the area and friends visited for a week. At the end of their visit they wanted to treat us to a meal at a local restaurant. They booked a table in person and were asked if they were going to turn up on the evening. This should have set off alarm bells. On arrival there were no smiling or welcoming faces and we were told our table is over there. Our drinks order was taken reasonably quickly, but were miss counted, we were made to feel uncomfortable. Our food order was taken and served in an exceptable time. At no time during our meal did anyone ask if our meal was satisfactory. The food was just okay, not as good as other local restaurants. I would not recommend this restaurant, the other venues we have visited in the Cove are far superior in providing good food and service. We will never return. We felt sorry for the one member of staff who did make an effort. A lot of basic training is required to improve the service here including not holding cups with fingers inside the cups when serving. Being a cordial and attentive host.

We visited Bishops restaurant last night for our final family meal before leaving Lullworth Cove today. Our meals were edible but for the prices are very unimaginative and my husbands sirloin was quite tough. As a vegetarian I refused to pay nearly £7 for a bowl of vegetable soup as a starter, a move I regretted when my main course arrived. Unlike the meat and fish eaters whose meals came with chips, veg and salads, I was served a smallish bowl of porridge! My so called mushroom risotto had few mushrooms and nothing else other than a big pile of parsley - presumably to make it look bigger. Also - a plea to ALL chefs- don't sprinkle paprika around the edge of the dish it looks messy and stains your clothes! We would however like to compliment our waitress. She needs training but served the whole restaurant single handed, whilst the owner, the barman and some bloke in sunglasses swanned around picking up occasional plates or sat in the bar watching tv.Also on a plus the pool problems mentioned in an earlier review have been sorted but the outside ( and only) toilet is filthy. We had a much tastier, friendlier and cheaper meal at the Lodge Bistro a few doors away!

After a bit of a reluctant start the chap behind the desk was friendly and helpful, although did explain it had been a very busy day (Easter Sunday) so cake choice limited and hot chocolate for my wife and youngest son seemed to be a bit of a struggle, not really sure why. Anyway, it all arrived, not at the same time, but it arrived. I did make a bit of a faux pas whilst looking for the WC (it's outside, which isn't a bad thing as you never get the table next to the loo). I stumbled across the bar which seemed very comfortable and playing the afternoon football on a t.v. hung on the wall (classy). I didn't get very far though as my entry was blocked by the red trousered Tim, who promptly and more than a little rudely showed me the door. I was genuinely concerned i'd walked into his living room by mistake!!Ok, we may not be the right sort of clientele for this 'Boutique Hotel', local business owners, middle aged, middle England, with polite, well educated children, sorry Tim- More likely i think it was just the wrong time of day, however, charming as the place may be, it's hard to recommend when made to feel so unwelcome.

Atmosphere slightly spoilt by some very rude fellow diners, however on the whole a very good experience.

We've never had to return a plate of food however for the first time at Bishops we had to. The welcome, was frost bitten to say the least, much like the food!! The atmosphere was non existent and staff seemed untrained and lacking in knowledge. It is a beautiful building however really need to be honest with clientele about menu and availability of food. We had been really looking forward to the food and the lobster in particular but it was cold and had to be reheated. The burger was cold also.It could be a little gem of food heaven however it's a shame to say that we had a poor experience.

Well all seemed very nice, but think twice....Customer Service was non existent. Dining etiquette - not there and food very average. My wife's stew was warmed in the microwave - we heard the dinger go off! All very twee menus but to be honest they have a long way go to improve the customer dining experience and the food wasn't that special. Sorry

We had a great difficulty to find a good place to dine locally (West Lulworth). According to the reviews made by previous customers, the Bishop restaurant did not appear attractive to us in the first place because of unrealistic expectations and people simply being fussy, but we decided to have a go. And it was the right choice. The atmosphere in the restaurant is rustic and unique. On 14th of February it also was very romantic: the red rose was placed on each table... The staff greeted us at the door and helped to the table. We had scallops and lobsters that were caught locally. The presentation of the food is skilfully arranged by the sheaf to please your eyes too. Satisfying and fine quality meal, quick and attentive service and reasonable price. The only suggestion we could make is to have greater choice of sea food. Otherwise, highly recommended place to eat locally if you like lobster! We will be back again.

My husband and myself visited here a few nights ago as it was the last night of our Christmas break together. The food was fantastic however when we visited the menu was limited due to stock issues (was told it was due to Christmas deliveries) I had the scallops and they were perfect! Only piece of advice was the Mussels said a large portion however I would say it was a normal portion size. It was the owners birthday and came in due to his staff being ill however he was very inviting and we could see he has a brilliant way with guests. Would recommend and if in the area we would visit again.

We stayed in attic room 1 which is advertised as budget and the room matched that description. I would however say that £80 is overpriced for this standard of room. The room is certainly tired and is in need of some decoration. The shower is showing signs of wear and again needs some attention. The host was welcoming and attentive when required and the breakfast was lovely. Overall an enjoyable stay but feel £65-£70 is a more fitting charge for this standard of room off peak.

Having seen previous trip advisor reviews were very sceptical about the visit. The room was gorgeous with a slight issue of wood louse infestation in the bathroom. The staff were wikid with the right intentions just in need of a little training. They went out of their way to make our stay fab (irons unavailable) ironed a shirt and at dinner was quick and food delicious. One tip would be to not have the guests asking for items like can I order dessert, breakfast can I have milk, croissants, jam etc have everything out u have advertised it so don't make your guests ask for it! Would definitely return as the staff characters were brilliant and the location out of this world :-)

Reserved a table for myself and my boyfriend for a romantic evening meal as we were told the food was very good. Our table was booked for 8.15 on arrival we were told we would have to wait around 15 mins for the table so we had a drink at the bar, the man running the establishment was very unwelcoming and we felt as if he was looking down his nose on us. After 3 drinks and an hour we wondered what was going on so asked and we were told our table still wasn't ready they said we could eat in the bar but as we had booked a table we decided to wait. there wasn't someone behind the bar at all times so when we asked someone for a drink we felt like we were inconveniencing them and it was very awkward. Food was nice but not worth the price as we waited so long and felt so unwelcome. When it came to paying they had 'accidentally' added items to our bill which we hadn't had, so overall poor service. Won't be going again.

This establishment is small and relies on tourists. In a beautiful location where evening eateries are few, it unluckily for us doesn't fail to fill it's tables each evening. We went specifically for the lobster, an excellent excuse for a holidays treat, however we're told there was none. So we settled instead for fish and chips. Our fish & chips set us back £27.50 each! For this money I was expecting something beautifully battered and tasty, fresh from the sea and locally caught. What arrived on my plate was a battered frozen fish that even Mr Birdseye would have been ashamed of. It tasted awful. Sometimes you go somewhere and the food is horrible and it is unfortunate but what inspired me to write this review is what the owner did to other customers and his staff while we were there. The owner does not deserve to have a successful business and take my money. The owner and two young women were waiting tables the night we visited, the women had poor English and were so timid after being brow beaten by their boss. The owner too a table of 4's order but when the food arrived there were only 3 meals. The owner refused to acknowledge that the 4 guests would have order 4 meal. Instead of owning up to his mistakes or even apologising he sent one of the women over to the table to take the brunt of the upset and tell them that they would put the 4th order through the kitchen but would not in anyway expedite the order for them. The owner was ever so chummy with the guests who were staying in his hotel. Twice he came to our table we asked for something and he ignored us and just sent one of the women over to take our request again. The table opposite us got up to leave to which the owner rushed over and said "no no no" and then he told them that their bed had not been made yet and handed them a pile of sheets to make there own bed. This 4 star boutique hotel also gave me the luxury of going outside to wee in an outside toilet. Not a luxury toilet block that was separate building but a cold unloved outside toilet. The audacity of the owner in his replies on trip advisor is that he always has an excuse, he always has a reason. He thinks everyone else is in the wrong and that his customers are wrong. Sometimes they might be but in this instance the problem is him. If you've taken the time to read this, then all I ask is that you don't "try it for yourself" in this location this man can't help but make money which is ilgotten and fraught with the disappointments of others.

We walked past and looked at the menu outside commenting that it looked good it was early. We went for a walked deciding we would go back and see if there was space for a early evening meal.I went in and asked a gentleman if he had a space for two. He response was it was not open. I asked what time he did open. (It was five o clock) Six was his reply,I asked again if he had a table for two. His response was sharp like it was too much bother. We were told six o clock as it was a nice evening we went to the bar and ordered a cider and a lemonade which turned out to be a can. There was confusion on what they could offer in the way of soft drinks. This was expensive for a can of lemonade that wasn't even poured out for the customer. We went and sat outside and had to fight off wasps but we're waiting in anticipation to sample the menu that wasn't cheap but as we were on holiday thought we would have a treat.Around 5.45 other people arrived sitting down menus were brought out to them. Nobody bothered to show us a menu or ask if we were ok.I went in to the reception and said we had booked. I had seen the gentleman book us in. I was told by a lady that she couldn't find where she had put us inside. Would we mind sitting outside. I explained about the wasps she got flustered I went back outside to explain what was happening to my husband. It now was very busy outside with customers being told there was no lobster. We were then asked by another lady had we booked. We left wasting over a hour feeling disappointed. If this is how this restaurant that has four stars and charges nearly thirty pounds for one person operates. It is shoddy service, poor customer skills and not a pleasant place to sit on rusty furniture to admire the stunning view.We went to the pub up the road lovely meal and great customer service. I went to Bishops for lunch with my family. We were shown to a table and then we were left for a long time, I had to ask for a menu. I asked for a children's menu, but that said they didn't have one and it was 'in production'. The table was dirty and no one came to clean it. The waiter told us it was his first day, so he wasn't sure of the routine. We finally ordered and when we received our drinks, they were all in different size glasses, absolutely no attention to detail. We had 3 members of staff come over individually to see why our food hadn't arrived and were told again it was the waiters first day. When the food did arrive, there was no cutlery and I had to ask for some and for serviettes. My husband had mussels, but at least 2 were served unopened, which was very worrying. My son ordered a crab sandwich and nearly bit into a very large piece of crab shell. This was the final straw for my incredibly mild mannered husband. Suffice to say we didn't pay for the meal. It was all very Fawlty Towers.

We had to go looking for someone to tell them that we had a table booked. When we found a member of staff they asked our names then deserted us in the bar while presumably checking if our table was ready. When seated we were left for fifteen minutes without a menu to look at. Finally when we were eating a cat came in and tried to climb on to my wife's lap. When we told the waitress she explained that it was the places cat before shooing it through the kitchen door! Fawlty towers comes to Dorset!

If you do not mind the service being poor, I definately recommend this restaurant. It is in a great location and the food was excellent and fairly priced (I had the prawn and mango salad). I would go again as, for me, the food quality is the most important factor. However the service was awful, so if this would concern you then you may wish to go elsewhere. We were greeted and seated promptly but from there it went downhill. The waiter didn't come over to take our order. After a little while, someone who seemed to be the manager came over to ask if we were being looked after. We said no so he went to find a waiter to take our order. After a few minutes the waiter came over. One of our party asked if he could have a some prawns as a side order (that was not on the menu). The waiter replied saying he didn't think that would be a problem, but when the food arrived there was no side of prawns. I would not mind if the restaurant couldn't accomodate a side order outside of the menu but it is disappointing that the waiter responded positively but did not inform us later that it was not possible as we might have wanted an alternative side had we known. He didn't mention it even when the food arrived. When ordering food we asked for a jug of tap water, along with some other drinks. It was a very hot day. A bottle of tap water arrived with 5 small-ish glasses (we were a party of 5). The bottle was not enough to fill all 5 glasses. We immediately asked for another bottle of water and suggested it would be helpful if we could have two. Whilst the waiter went to get more water, 4 of us drank our glasses of water. The waiter came back with 1 bottle of water. Knowing it would only be enough to fill the 5th glass and refill 3 of the other 4, we immediately asked for more water and again asked for 2 bottles, this time being clearer that we would like 2 bottles. The waiter again came back with 1 bottle, so we had to ask again for another bottle when we ran out again. The food arrived promptly. As a small note, they had quite a few wasps buzzing around above our indoor table (which was by the window). That didn't particularly bother us but if you have children (or adults!) in your party who will be disturbed you might prefer a table further inside, which might be slightly better. I did notice the outdoor tables had little fires on them, presumably to try to keep wasps away. In summary, excellent food but poor service. The waiter did seem to be trying and was very polite, he just wasn't very successful at customer service.

If this restaurant wasn't in the extremely privileged geographical location that it is, it wouldn't be in business for very long. The service is as bad service as I've ever had anywhere. The very grumpy waiter (I think he was the manager/owner) forgot our drink order three times (literally four drinks were brought out one by one), we had to constantly flag him down if we needed anything (i'm sure he was trying to avoid eye contact), and pieces of cutlery were missing for each course we had. Not once did anyone ask how our food was, and trying to get the attention of staff for the bill took a lifetime. There simply was no service. These guys are either taking the mickey, given up on customer happiness or have never had any type of hospitality training. We booked a table and the owner/manager was very welcoming. The waitress seemed a little rushed and was running round to each table and as a result didn't come across as the most welcoming. We had some bread and olives and the bread was a little dry as if it had been there a little too long. I had the mussels for main which were nice enough but admittedly I have had better. My partner had the lobster and said it was nice and he enjoyed it. We shared a cheesecake for desert which was quite nice. The drinks were a tad expensive. I had a medium glass of rose for over £5 and my partner a peroni which was served as a half pint yet still charged just over £4! As we left we noted that the blackboard outside advertised the lobster cheaper than the menu inside, little confusing but as we had already paid we didn't bother questioning it.Overall it was a nice meal and would probably give it another try if we were to visit again as you can tell the seafood dishes are fresh and locally caught. With a few minor tweaks it could be great.

Oh dear! Wish I had taken more notice of the negative reviews, but liked the sound of the menu and there were some good reviews so thought it was worth a try. Away on a mini break with my daughter and we enjoy eating out, especially near the sea with a good fish and shellfish menu. I will try to keep this brief..... Only four tables occupied, including ours, but the service was not good. The set menu is not what it seems. I don't remember ever having to decide at the beginning of a meal whether I will have a dessert or just starter and main, and I have eaten out in hundreds of restaurants in many countries including UK. When we were asked soon after being given the menu if we wanted drinks, we said that we were tempted by the set menu so would have the Prosecco that was included in the set menu. We were told that the Prosecco was only included if we went for three courses. We expressed surprise (as it didn't look like the menu was worded that way) but said we would have the Prosecco anyway, and see how we felt about desserts later. Our table still hadn't been laid at this point but our starters of scallops came very quickly (as a previous reviewer remarked, one wonders whether they were pre cooked and just heated up) and we hadn't been brought the bread and olives that were listed as part of the set menu as an appetiser. The scallops certainly didn't taste of anything, although the accompanying black pudding and parsnip was nice. We never did receive the bread and olives that we expected. We asked for a glass of white wine while we were eating our scallops but it took ages to arrive because the waitress was more intent on clearing and cleaning the other tables that had been vacated - by this time we were the only two diners left in the restaurant. The lobster main course was pretty good, I must say. But we left feeling that what should have been a good dining experience was ruined by the ambiguous menu, poor service, and being charged more than we should have been. I told the waitress, when the bill came, that we had never received bread and olives and she said that only happened if you ordered three courses, but we had made it clear that we would decide later about desserts. I emphasised that I thought the wording on the menu was not clear and she said that other people had said the same. So I said that I wanted her to pass on my feedback as I wasn't happy and she just shrugged. I wish we had stayed at our hotel to eat that night, as the breakfast next day was excellent and the service too - The Lulworth Cove Inn.

How they can say and advertise outside that they are 4* is a farce. I worked in a beautiful 4* hotel for 8 years and understand what service should and could be. We waited and waited for the "1" waitress serving all the tables outside, to come and request an order. She was toooo busy and it was very mean on behalf of the management on a Bank Holiday to think she could/should have been able too. My partner went in and got our drinks and we waited for over twenty minutes before we gave up and I went inside and found a very snooty gentleman on the reception, he took my order and we waited and waited. The "flying" waitress came out with what can only be described as a very TRAGIC version of what was advertised. The cheap bread was NOT the lovely bread they advertised and the fish fingers were disgusting and cheap, served with some limp pea shoots and a tiny portion of crisps (NOT KETTLE AS ADVERTISED). No condiments on table, which we wanted but gave up as no sign of the waitress. Why do places like this feel they can rip people off, they are in a lovely location and I suppose they feel they have a cornered market and people are only visiting the once on holiday. Will query the 4*, they do not deserve it.

We had read some mixed reviews about the dining experience but decided to give Bishops (Olive restaurant) a visit over the May Day bank holiday. Sadly, the reviews had merit, as this would rank as some of the worst customer-service we've ever experienced! First the positives: the location is great, the courtyard pleasant, and credit to the chef, as our meals were very good (the Bouillabaisse special and Moules Mariniere were delicious). Unfortunately this was all totally let down by the most demoralised waiting staff I think I've encountered, and a manager who seemed to be doing his best turn as John Cleese, unwittingly insulting his clients, and disappearing somewhere else whenever things got tricky or some real work was required. I rarely post a bad review but this one absolutely merits it. Just to add some context: We arrived and neither of the two waitresses or the manager acknowledged us so in the end we asked if we could seat ourselves. When we finally got a menu it took 20 minutes for anyone to come back, whilst we watched a line of bewildered guests trying to get seated in the half empty dining room. One of our party asked the manager where the toilet was and after initially blanking her, he reluctantly pointed vaguely out to the back, and then walked off to seat a couple who managed to get seated, served and out before we (and the other group tables) had even got our first course. After we finished the food, our plates lay on the table for the next 45 minutes as we waited for anyone to come back to us. At one point a wooden room divider was knocked over by a customer and landed with a crash into the back of my friend's chair (hitting his head and neck). The waitress looked like she couldn't be bothered but eventually came over with barely a grunt and reluctantly lifted it off. Later we asked both the manager and our waitress for the bill, both grunted acknowledgement, but nothing was forthcoming. After a while we realised we hadn't seen our waitress for quite some time - it transpired that she had finished at three and had decided to exit on the dot, leaving her colleague to pick up the pieces, and at this point the manager did one of his disappearing acts. We (and the other diners) were almost laughing by now as it's rare to not be able to pay for food in a restaurant. In the end we managed it, but not before overhearing two other disgruntled diners complaining, the poor remaining waitress disappearing to do the dishes (!) and the manager insulting yet another arriving group with a withering putdown. To be fair, some people would pay for this kind of surreal experience, but in reality, what it needs is for management to take a long hard look at themselves, hire sufficient staff (motivated and friendly would be a great start) and remember that this is a service industry where all the guests are actually your clients! Such a shame.

We booked this hotel for breakfast on Sunday morning. I called ahead to find out if they were pet friendly as the website didn't say.The manager / owner (?) seemed very abrupt but did say he could accommodate us all so long as we were there at 10am, which suited us too.A table was laid for 6 although we were 4, but that wasn't a problem.we were followed in by another couple who asked if they could have breakfast, who were asked in return if they had booked, which they hadn't but with a bit of a shrug of the shoulders were told yes they could. (When someone comes to your door, they are willing to give you money. A welcoming smile goes a long way). The breakfast was fine but one of our party has some food allergies so asked for the sausage on her full english to be removed. When her food arrived the sausage was replaced with a black pudding, which contaminated the rest of the plate. we had to send the plate back and the chef had to re cook the whole dish again, which was very good of him or her, but would not have been necessary if the waitress had been a bit more on the ball.We had to ask for pretty much everything, the coffee, the second coffee that was not produced with the first coffee order, toast, juice, and some more coffee. It was a bit of a struggle to be honest. Our waitress was not up for the job and another lady looked as if she was pre-occupied with anything other than looking after the guests sat at her tables. This was a £12.50 breakfast we were paying for here. Had the experience been better we may have booked for an evening meal or even looked at an overnight stay sometime in the future, but they just didn't deserve it. A real shame.

Having stayed at Bishops last year and had a great time, we decided to visit again for a meal with some friends, having enjoyed the food so much last time. The menu has changed and is, if anything, better. The whole lobster and the moules mariniere are to die for. Just what we were hoping for on the Dorset coast. The idea of battered sea bass is brilliant and great change from cod. We will be back!

Visited here Sunday lunchtime and enjoyed a nice meal. Service was good and the food was good value. It's part of a hotel and is a little further down towards the cove so not quite so busy.

We have just had the most lovely fish meal that I couldn't fault. Large fat fresh scalps followed by fresh lobster and sea bass. As semi locals used to a high standard of seafood from other local restaurants this was bang on for value for money and service. The proprietor could not have been more helpful and service was swift and efficient. I shall be recommending this establishment on my blog and we will return in the future.

We wanted to sample a Dorset cream tea and this rather faded looking establishment was advertising them on a board, so we decided to give it a go. The start was inauspicious-we were ignored for about 5 minutes before a gentleman came out from the back of the place and asked if he could help-it seemed pretty clear that he didn't really want to however! We asked if we could have cream teas-he affirmed that we could and we seated ourselves at a long table, big enough for the 6 of us and a highchair. The rather sullen waitress took our order for 6 cream teas without smiling or engaging with us at all. 6 tea plates were hurled down on the end of the table and these were hastily followed by 6 knives and 6 paper napkins, all delivered in total silence. Worse was to come-we were summarily provided by 6 of the flattest, stalest scones we have ever seen together with enough clotted cream for roughly 3 scones and some shop bought jam. I had coffee and was lucky-the tea drinkers were given weak tea in leaky pots. We had 1 small jug of milk between 6 and were frowned on when we asked for more. The scones fell apart if you were lucky enough to cut them open and were tasteless and vile. The baby needed to be changed but we could not find anyone to ask regarding baby change facilities so we had to resort to lying him on the floor in the WC.This is an awful place and the staff are clearly not happy. Do not bother to visit!

Visited Bishops at the weekend - great location, great food and great staff, Tim and Denise gave us such a warm welcome. The accommodation was very comfortable and of a very good standard. We also had great views from our room (The Cove Room). This little boutique hotel is just a stones throw away from the cove, the local pub "Lulworth Cove Inn" and the south west coast path to Durdle Door and beyond. This boutique hotel is highly recommended.

Arrived at 20:30pm to the restaurant with a couple dining (must I add it was a Sataurday) ! Ordered our starters and main! I ordered a creamy mushroom starter, my sister; a crab starter and my aunty; a grilled vegetable goats cheese salad starter!! The worst starter I have encountered ! Seemed to me everything on our plate was shop brought!! Following our disappointing starters, we waited up to an hour in dread for our mains to come - the sea bass risotto ! All three of us had the sea bass fillet with Prawns, mussels, crayfish, pan seared scallops with rissoto - sounds amazing? Oh how disappointed were we!! Undercooked rissoto, no mussels, no scallops, no prawns!! The sea bass looked tempting however given the state of the rest of the dish, we did not think it was worth tempting! We mentioned this to the staff and the reply was " the chef is having a bad day" !! Ridiculous!! The waitress came over and we explained that most of the seafood was missing - she did not deny any of it - in fact she went on agreeing with us and took our plates away!Whilst we waited for our bill to arrive, we heard the chef ( "who was clearly having a bad day") shout and scream - even heard a plate smash! What an earth was going on? One member of staff came over and apologised - even said not to pay. However, as polite as we are, we decided to pay for the lacklustre starters and drinks! Felt oh so sorry for the staff (hence the one star) but never are we going to visit this place again! Place looked great from the outside but one word of advice - DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER!

I booked this hotel for it's Location. It was supposed to be 4 stars and a "Boutique" Bed and Breakfast Establishment. It was neither - it was very dirty, the towels and bathrobes looked like they could do with a good wash and there were dead flies all over also in the Restaurant. The staff were helpful enough but seemed to be overstressed especially at breakfast. Our meal was fine but we had to wait quite a while on it. On booking I gave my credit cart details as normal and was quite surprised to find the total amount for all 3 rooms was taken straight away, I was not told about this when I phoned to make the booking. It would not have been so bad but I was responsible for acquiring accommodation for our party of 8 and I felt most embarrassed to be asking my fellow travellers to part with their hard earned cash for such a dump.Owners of this Establishment - I strongly suggest you clean up and get the place sorted out, it is not ok to advertise yourselves as being of a high Quality when it is clearly not the case.

We had dinner here whilst on a short break in Lulworth. The fillet of beef was fantastic, however the waitress was quite possibly the rudest I have ever witnessed. We were such an inconvenience to her evening and it left an 'atmosphere' which made us rush our food and get out of there quickly...

I would not visit this hotel again, we were visiting Lulworth Cove on holiday and when we saw the sign for Cream Teas we entered. We asked to have them served in the garden - the seat cushions were wet and the garden full of rubbish and swimming pool chemical tubs. When the cream tea arrived the tea was cold and the apple cake potion was tiny.Could not believe that the toilet was outside and when it came to settle the bill the lady said "that will be a tenner" and stood when her hand held out waiting for payment! The price was a premium and we would not return and would not recommend their cream teas to anyone.

My wife & I spent the last week at Lulworth Cove & passed Bishops most days so couldn't help ourselves from admiring their menu. Whilst the reviews on Tripadviser were mixed, we read with interest how well the new chef was rated. And after an outstanding meal on Wednesday night, we can confirm that Bishops should be at the top of everyone's list when dining out in Lulworth Cove. To begin with, my wife had the chargrilled vegetables with goats cheese whilst I had the lemon sole - both dishes looked superb & tasted great. We then both had the Dorset lamb which was cooked to perfection, surrounded by the most delicious red wine jus & came with a good portion of garlicky greens & polenta cake. Absolutely hit the spot & presented by the chef himself, which was a lovely touch even if it did reflect the limited numbers of staff. We finished with a very generous cheese board (which would easily have been enough for two) plus the creme brule which again, went down a treat. Along with a glass of chardonnay, a large bottle of Durdle Door beer & a very nice bottle of Portuguese red,the meal cost just over 100 quid & which we thought was very reasonable. The service was friendly, though a little quirky, but which added rather than detracted from the overall experience. Bottom line is that this has been one of the nicest restaurant experiences we've had over the past 6 weeks in the UK.

Exceptionally good food - everything from wonderful beef to imaginative seafood. By far the best place to eat at Lulworth Cove, and for such high quality meals, not too expensive.

We were looking for somewhere to have tea, coffee and a piece of cake. On checking the menu which was displayed next to the road, we found Dorset apple cake and cream teas listed, so we went in to order some. The place looked nice but was deserted. We waited and then were about to walk out when a man appeared and greeted us. I asked if they were serving cream teas, and he said, "No," so we left.Er, why put cream teas on your menu if you're not serving them mid-afternoon in holiday season? Seems like prime cream tea time to me. The sign said 'accommodation - restaurant - bar'.
