Birria Bella in Newcastle upon Tyne

Sunday lunch. Lovely staff recruited from Newcastle Uni, sadly let down by the food. Tough beef, cold veg, and gravy that refused to pour from its jug. Sad, as local to us and used to be fab for Sunday lunch a few years ago.

After driving through Tyne tunnel and 8miles away from home on arrival I got charged 25 quid for the munch box and have no idea why. I was expecting 20 quid as that's what it said on menu😔 Food was nice so no issues there

Food nice, could have been warmer, eg put in a warm bowl, asked for gin mare dirty martini, don't know what I got but not what was ordered, partner drank it

Are here as part of a group on Sunday afternoon. What a lovely place. Staff friendly and accommodating especially as we had a few pre order mix ups. Tacos were lovely but I’d definitely get some side as well next time as was still a little hungry. The burritos looked amazing and the loaded nacho portion was massive. It’s a great place to chill out really nice atmosphere and I’ll be back without a doubt. Thank you

A great little gem at the top of Jesmond Dene, handy for a refreshing beer after a walk, but some excellent cocktail choices too!

Loved the classic look of the whole place, the food was made quickly, the food was full of flavour and the drinks were nice and cold and refreshing. Definitely will visit again.

Food very very poor. Complete style over substance - I think my carpet may have more flavour than the food served here. The worst birria tacos I’ve had. Service was all over the place, food being brought to the wrong tables. Do not waste your time or money

Birra bella was THE best place. The tacos were the best ever, however since moving, the tacos have went downhill. Not only that but you get less and it's more expensive. The atmosphere is gone, just a musty old English pub now with weird old men having pints next to you. This tragedy will never be forgiven.

If you're like me, and you have searched for a restaurant that serves birria tacos with consommé for a while, I would definitely recommend you visit Birria Bella and give it a try! In my experience, their food will definitely satisfy the craving you may have after seeing any viral birria taco videos online from 'foodie' content creators. While I admit, as other comments have stated, their consommé was a bit bland, their tacos are good and the fries that come in the munch box are delicious. The service and the seating was a bit awkward as there was no obvious waiter/waitress that guided us to sit and take our order. The entire process felt a bit unorganised as we sat in the tight outdoor seating area. I would recommend the munch box for sharing as it can be a bit expensive(£20) if just for one person. If you're sharing the munch box with others then I would also recommend everyone to order a main or something extra for themselves to make sure you're full but also have an enjoyable experience where you can try various foods the restaurant offers. Since my first experience I have not returned, however, I would be open to eating at Birria Bella again if I have that craving for Mexican food.

The change in the birria broth compared to last time I came (in the old place) is very welcome. Good food. A few comments though: - The beef birria broth was a little bitter and lacking of more body and salt. The bitterness probably for overcooking the chillies. - The broth that came from a mushroom quesabirria was way better. It was salted. - The beef quesabirria was a bit blant. Not much flavour coming out of it and the meat was a bit dryer for a birria. It could use a bit more salt and probably some other thing on the cooking process in the broth (if you cook it in the broth) - The fried chicken taco was sweat. Nothing wrong with it, I was just expecting someting more savoury for a mexican-style taco - We were expecting the cheese to have more flavour on the quesabirrias but that was not the case. We have found that Provolone and also Lancashire Creamy/Tasty melts well and both have a nice flavour for quesadillas if you guys ever want to give it a try. Nachos with guacamole were amazing! We loved the totopos, they tasted amazing.

Waited 55 minutes for food, for it to come with absolutely no salt at all, could easily be 5 star with faster service and a bit of seasoning, at least a little bit I mean there is no salt AT ALL.

Waited for the best part of an hour and no food. Asked earlier and were told that we were next but then two tables’ orders came out with no sign of ours. When we asked again we were told it would be another 5 minutes- they hadn’t even started making it by the looks of things. No one told us there was a significant wait for food and the waiter was very brusque (if a little rude) with us when we asked to just pay for the drinks as we couldn’t wait any longer. My kids left hungry. Poor experience. I would not go back. Edit: in their reply to this post, they claim that we were made aware of the wait and that the food was plated and shown to us before we left. I’m not trying to be in the business of causing problems for businesses and I do hope that they have addressed the problems that I have brought up here- I have been completely honest. We were extremely patient and communication was very poor. We were not made aware of the wait time and not shown the plates dishes. This was our experience and to say otherwise questions my integrity. An apology would have been much more appropriate. I wish them all the best.

We’ve been a fan of Birria Bella since its opening. We’ve always loved popping in for breakfast after a dog walk (breakfast burritos - yum!!) We were very excited to try the new menu at the new location, the Punchbowl Hotel, and it did not disappoint!! so much so we’ve already ate there twice and they’ve only been open a week! The new additions to the menu mean there is something for everyone! We got a munch box, which we found to be really good value for money, and being able to choose from a selection of tacos was amazing. The buttermilk chicken taco is unreal, and of course the original birria meat taco! The cocktail menu is fab too!! Highly recommend; fabulous food, drink and a lovely atmosphere, and super dog friendly too! Already looking forward to our next trip…..🌮🌯🍴

Visiting Newcastle and really keen to try this out, but it is not where it said it would be on the map and so we had to find somewhere else. Hopefully find it next time.

Disappointing to see that original menu items have all changed in taste, cost and size. Prices have increased and portion sizes have decreased. Poor service at Punch Bowl, staff unfamiliar with menu items, generally slow and rushing to get you out the door before you have finished your meal. Dining atmosphere completely different to Birria Bella. Unpleasant experience on this occasion. Unlikely to return.

Vistited last Sunday and the place was absolutely freezing. Staff were inattentive, and we were told the heating was defunct. Walls streaming with moisture added to the prison-like conditions. Food ok, but nothing special. Shame.

Food was really bland and my margarita just tasted of salt!

Visited today for Mother’s Day lunch. Cheerful welcome with fantastic customer service, attention to detail and scrumptious food. Highly recommend

I really wanted to love this. I love Mexican food but it was such a disappointment. I had the mushroom tacos and my partner had the meat burrito, waited an hour for food and the burrito was cold with the tacos burnt. There wasn’t a lot of seasoning in the food which meant it was all just a bit bland and because the kitchen is in the same room as you eat (can’t he helped) there was so much oil and smoke in the air it had my eyes streaming and sore. It’s a really small restaurant so again it probably can’t be helped, but there’s no windows to open. Would have been such a better experience if we sat outside but it’s February and cold. Everything was just below average and it makes me sad because I expected great things from the other reviews! Desperados were good though and the prices are fair.

Had tried Birria Bella’s tacos before from a food truck at an event and had been wanting to visit the restaurant for a while; so glad we finally did! The food is absolutely outstanding, we ordered the tacos and the quesadilla which were delicious. Very reasonably priced and excellent service, it certainly lives up to the hype. The best Mexican food I’ve had in Newcastle and can’t wait to return.

Absolutely Birria Bella the burritos are incredible and the meat is perfectly done every time and the dips and sauces are great

Nachos with the tajin were amazing but the birria tacos had no flavour. No spice or salt.

We have been wanting to try this place for ages so we booked a room in Jesmond to stay and enjoy our night. 5 star totally amazing did not disappoint and the food was out of this world. The staff were amazing and we had some sneaky cocktails. Our photos don’t do it justice we will be back soon thank you.

Enjoyed our breakfast burrito here. Huge portion and great quality. We loved the quirky interior. Looking forward to visiting again.

Birria Bella is a quirky, independent dog friendly venue with plenty outside seating available! Amazing fresh food and coffee, always a warm welcome from the friendly staff! We love to pop by after a walk in Jesmond Dene just a stones throw away, 100% 5/5!

I had a lovely waitress (black hair and glasses) on Sunday, who was extremely helpful and attentive and served us with a smile at all times. Thank-you so much, she was absolutely lovely:)

All are delicious and tasty, just like a real Mexican flavour! Second time been there and every time is beautiful delighted 😊 My kids love it !!

We visited here on the 10th November 2023 for a date night, we are students and visited here to due the recent hype on tik tok - firstly we were greeted and seated we ordered a coke and a Fanta as-well as the munch box ( the £20 one) , fried hallumi breakfast burrito and the Birria meat breakfast quesadilla with guac, all were delicious. The chips tasted home cooked and the meat was tender the dipping sauces were juicy and warm however we expected a spice or stronger flavour in that sauce and Birria meat however all aspects were great. The price for the quality of food was reasonable. Was seen to lots by staff. Only thing to say is the layout of the of restaurant gives off a cafe vibe - tables are small. overall if we were to return we would try a takeaway option as the food was amazing.

Have tried on two separate occasions to have Birria Bella delivered through Uber Eats, and both times they’ve cancelled our order after making us wait over 90 mins for updates. Couldn’t tell you what the food tastes like, but clearly you need to eat in to see

Got the quesadilla and the tacos. Absolutely sublime!

I have been there with my son who now lives in Newcastle, he mentioned the food is amazing and similar to some basic Mexican food he knows--as I live in Mexico. I thought, let's try it! We arrived, ordered several basic sides such as tacos, quesadillas , burrito, simple food. Then we waited for the food to arrive, but we waited for more than 45 mins and we were not served. We sat outside, but although it was a bit busier inside, there were two cooks and two waiters. We were meant to meet my son in-laws later, unfortunately we had to cancel our orders, so I didn't taste the food! However, something I have noticed when my sone went to pay for drinks was how small the cooker is for the amount of tables the restaurant wishes to serve. Perhaps it would be a good idea to invest in cooking facilities adapted to the kind of food you are doing. I can now go back to Mexico and tell my friends that those who try to run Mexican restaurants in England are far less efficient than in Mexico, some won't believe me!

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW! Amazing food! Could eat everything 5 times over! Got the munch box where you get a bit of everything. The birria tacos are absolutely lush! Birria on the nachos wasn’t very hot but that’s my preference of liking piping hot food, didn’t spoil the experience and will definitely be back! If you haven’t tried it, please do you will not be disappointed

Great menu, great food and value for money. We had a lovely evening and sat outside it had a great feel to the place. The menu delivers authentic Mexican food you won't be disappointed. Great drink offers as well on beers and cocktails. If you are lucky you may get to meet the owners father "Ian" a top man who will make your evening. Don't let the size of this little Mexican restaurant fool you. They make the best tacos i've ever had! Even the chips are pretty amazing. 10 out of 10!

Amazing food and service. I visit a couple of times a month, you really cannot fault this place.

Been here a couple of times now. The food is wonderful but could do with having a bit of spice ! Hot sauce on the table would be a fab idea. The nachos were so fully loaded and everything felt so fresh. The birra tacos felt authentic but could have done with a bit more spice as mentioned above. Frozen margs were epic. We didn't get offered any more drinks despite being there 2 hours which was disappointing. Unfortunately the chairs are very uncomfortable inside and outside so be prepared if you have any back /hip issues.! I would return but maybe for takeway.

Amazing little Mexican eatery! I highly recommend you indulge in the birria tacos and tortilla chips with their homemade salsa! Superb!

Went here for lunch , got the share platter, fantastic food ! Drinks were also very nice. Small in side but makes for a nice setting with more seating outside. Highly recommend on food and drinks and also staff were very nice.

Simply cannot believe we can have proper birria tacos so close to home! Since coming back from NYC and having been spoiled with Birria Landia and Los Tacos No.1, I’ve been longing to scratch that itch here! These are 100% on par with, if not better than NYC! You should deffo serve the consome in larger pots with chunks of birria as a dish on its own though 🤤🤤😁

on the hunt for some nice food places in jesmond (uni student), here was the first place we tried and it’s now one of my favourite spots - the staff are so lovely, the service was great and the food was absolutely unreal!! highly recommend!!

Nice vibe, really small inside but was sat outside. food took around 45 minutes from ordering to arrive but was really hot and tasty. Will come again when it's less busy. I got the birria tacos and nachos with salsa, the salsa wasn't the best i've ever had but the nacho chips were clearly baked fresh and crunchy

Unfortunately Uber Eats driver decided he would drop off as many orders as possible before delivering our order almost cold Yet despite this, Birria Bella has made a fantastic meal for us, I'd go so far as to say that, even though it was cold and a little bit damp, this is the best mexican food I've ever tasted. How is that even possible? I'm a massive fan of mexican scran and I will 100% be visiting this place to get the top quality experience they clearly strive for Outstanding

Found this little place as walking around Jesmond, very friendly staff and atmosphere was calming. Will stop and try food next time.

First time visit to this Jesmond taco place and was blown away, the food far exceeded expectations. When you say tacos you think you know what to expect, but the ones we ordered (meat for her, mushroom for me) were a cut above. The shells (imported from Mexico) weren't soft and they weren't especially crispy, they had a nice bit of a fried crust as who l well as a little chew; I've never had them like that before and they were delicious. The fillings were generous and well judged and the consommé "for dippin and sippin" were a touch of culinary genius. If we were looking for faults, I'd be disappointed as there was none, luckily we were looking for great food and that's what we got. Excellent value too.

Waited 40 minutes for a food order which didn't arrive. When I saw customers being served who arrived after us we cancelled and left. Amateurish set up. Excuses were inadequate. It doesn't or shouldn't take over half an hour to make a sandwich.

Went for food today for first time will not be the last. Tacos and loaded chips were amazing. Good cocktails and a sun trap out side seating is superb. Staff super friendly. We are going to try the breakfast next time.

Just been here tonight for the first time after discovering it on TikTok. Wow! The food was incredible!

Came for brunch this morning with our little boy. Food was absolutely delicious. I had the special loaded hash browns with birria meat, guacamole and an egg, husband had a breakfast bun with birria meat and extra halloumi. The two ladies serving were extremely friendly and welcoming. We'll definitely be back!

I go to Birria Bella once a week as my boys love the tacos, birria chips and burritos. Everything is so fresh and tasty. The staff are so friendly and I would thoroughly recommend eating there or taking out. Thank you !

THE BEST burrito me and my friend have ever eaten. And the dipping broth?! Oh lord... We also tried the taco which wasn't as good but hey. Dog friendly, quirky place. Doesn't seem much from the outside and is rather small inside, however the burrito is worth it.

Lovely spot for authentic birria tacos! I would like to go back in the summer to take advantage of their outdoor seating as it's very narrow and cramped inside. I also feel the birria could have had more flavour as it was bland without seasoning - both the meat and the consumé dip

Without question the best tacos in Newcastle. Restaurant is small but speedy and the staff are super friendly. The only thing that could improve on this hidden gem and titan of the North East Mexican scene is if they had a spicier salsa/some decent hot-sauce for the table!

Bringing the birria wave to the north east with locally sourced and homemade beef. It’s a few £ more expensive than equivalent chains but worth a try if you fancy Mexican. - the Munch box on delivery included 3 tacos, birria nachos and birria fries at £22.50 - the fries were lovely. Salty, crispy, smothered in mayo, cheese, guacamole and chilli with beef on top 😍 - nachos were great like the chips 👌 - the beef was juicy, tender but with a bite. - the tacos were fine, but I’m more of a burrito person. Adding the consommé didn’t do much. Will try the breakfast wraps at some point.

I recently visited a small Mexican restaurant and had the opportunity to try their fresh nachos and birria meat tacos. I have to say, I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the food. The nachos were absolutely delicious, with perfectly cooked chips and salsa. The birria meat tacos were equally impressive, with tender, flavorful meat and a variety of spices that really made the dish stand out. I only wish if they provided a bit of extra toppings or hot sauce as I prefer having the meat with bit of heat. If you're a fan of Mexican food, I highly recommend giving this place a try. You won't be disappointed!

WOW, fantastic burrito and a side of nachos enjoyed here. The beef was so tender and plentiful, accompanied by some wonderful flavours. Looking forward to returning to try the tacos.

The photos look nice, expecting authentic Latin food. The food was unfortunately tasteless/ any seasoning was drowned out by the sheer amount of oil. The oil was coming through the bottom of the cardboard delivery box from birria tacos. I expect some oil but not for it to be like an oil flavoured taco. The consomme didn't have much either. And no spiciness to tacos or consomme. I would have been ok with the price if the food looked like the pictures and tasted like the tasty pictures, but no. Disappointing.

Quirky place but excellent food, and really nice staff. I ordered salmon salad but they had ran out of salmon, so they went out and bought some more in - now that is good customer service. Very nice coffee too.

Food is fantastic. Really good quality ingredients, beautifully spiced and seasoned - not chilli-hot but packed with flavour. Outdoor seating is less appealing in bad weather but it’s so delicious I’d still go in the rain.

I have eaten here numerous times and can honestly say this is one of the best kept secrets in Newcastle. The food is absolutely brilliant and the staff are fantastic - don’t just take my word for it …. call in if you are in Jesmond. Oh - we were even lucky enough to find their little Orange van in Whitley Bay …. the food was just as outstanding !!!

Lovely, family run establishment. Friendly staff, tasty food and reasonably priced. It's located, close to jesmond dene so perfect for a cuppa and a nibble after exploring the dene. It is a small venue and the best seating is outside, so on a sunny day you might have to queue but alternatively, ask for take out and enjoy their goodies whilst in the dene. BTW....their fries are highly recommended. 😋

Finally, great Mexican food in Jesmond. Eat in or you could take away after a short wait. Very attentive. Also it is extremely good value for your money.

Fully loaded nachos and fries with meat were freshly prepared and so delicious! Never disappointed with any of their food. Always a warm welcome . Tea, coffee and soft drinks available. Dogs welcome with treats if wanted. Small amount of seating inside with more outside.
