Excellent food, nice choice of dishes including a couple of vegan options. Friendly staff. Good prices. Good sized portions. We came here for Sunday lunch, I'm vegan and had the no-chicken sweet and sour, my wife and brother in law had the fishcakes. We really enjoyed the food and the ambience.

Came with family early evening. A warm welcome from the attentive staff. A great selection on the menu, anyone would struggle to find something they didn't like. Drinks selection good too. The food came, everyone of the meals looked scrumptious. Mine was cajun chicken ,it was delicious. One or two managed a dessert, they too were excellent. All in all a really enjoyable visit and certainly will be back

Staff are friendly as soon as you walk in. Food is delicious. Good selection of choice on the menu. Never had anything bad to say about the food or service. This pub is our go to for the above reasons.

Attended a freinds 60 th. Food great , atmosphere too. Staff warm and freindly ,catered for 30 plus . Nothing too much trouble. Very nice indeed. No complaints .10/10.

Had a lovely meal to celebrate Father's day. Chef was very accommodating due to my onion allergy and prepared me a delicious chicken dinner with a mushroom sauce,it was divine. My compliments to the chef! Always have great meals here, staff are always friendly, highly recommend.

First ever visit to The Bird in the Barley today. Had the beef and Yorkshire pudding off the Sunday menu plus deserts. The food was excellent and lots of it. Pleasant staff, nice atmosphere and very clean tables.

Great little spot for dinner with a few pals. Fish and chips to die for, not sure what the complaints about the chips are for? Puddings made by a young lad, Tom I believe. Delicious. Keep it up ladies and gents :)

Staff extremely rude on multiple occasions and made us feel bad for not ordering starters and deserts?! Some of the food was not very appetising and the portions are small. The whole place could do with a good clean and a lick of paint. Wouldn’t be returning.

After my previous bad review I was offered a voucher to try a return visit. I wish to confirm that the meals are back up to scratch. We went with friends and all had a very enjoyable meal, however we still debated the state of the chips. I wish to thank the owner for his response to my previous review, and we will be back and recommend this restaurant for a good value menu.

We have been going to Bird in the Barley for over 10 years and always have a good meal, however on this occasion it was terrible. My husband had fish and chips and had to return it because the chips were terrible. The fish was burnt also but when it came back out it wasn't much better. My chips were also bad. I have noticed recently how bad the chips are, they look like they haven't been peeled and cooked in old oil. We have decided to give this pub a wide berth for the time being. we complained when paying our bill and regret not asking for a reduction as non was forth coming.

Have driven passed many times. Me and my wife were on a hike this evening and decided to stop for a pint. When walking in it immediately reminded me of a pub-restaurant I used to work at, with all the oak beams, artefacts on the wall, tablecloths and a classic looking bar. Very homely. So we decided to eat and glad we did, one of the best ribeye steaks I've ever had. Was more than 12oz. Everything spot on, timing, staff, food quality, environment. Can't wait to go again!

Excellent night from start to finish...staff let me pop in the afternoon to put up banners,balloons, staff helpful friendly, food excellent, piping hot, everyone got what pre ordered no mistakes, staff cut up birthday cake for me handed it out, a big thankyou to the chef and his crew back stage,food was great,service was excellent Our fav pub to pop for tea, lovely staff always helpful chatty thankyou for a fabulous night. I have to agree with some of the downside remarks made in some reviews about the low standard of the food. I had homemade patè starter, the actual patè was very bland and flavourless everything else on the plate was awful, I think it was half a slice of cheap white bread and sliced through so it was very thin and either left out to go hard and stale or very slightly toasted and left to go stale. The salad that came with it, little bit of cucumber(not prepared well), I think either half or one small tomato, some very thin slivers of red bell pepper(poorly prepared) and a lot of very robustly sliced red onion and some kind of tasteless relish, no butter for the stale gruesome white bread. I had homemade chicken curry, I seem to remember school dinner curry being better, the chicken was very dry, like it had been cooked a week ago, sultanas in there, they couldn't bring it up to school dinner standard. I was very hungry and ate it, I think next time I eat anywhere like this I'm going to leave it, they did half heartedly ask if everything was ok but when you are out with friends you aren't going to cause a fuss, they better not reply you should have spoke up at the time, they served me awful food, they must have known that bread was stale. Never again for me.

We happened upon Bird in Barley for tea after driving by several times wondering what it was like. I’ll be honest, from exterior we expected this modern, ordinary, gastropub but we was actually pleasantly surprised. Bird in Barley is a quaint, cosy country pub full of nostalgia. Visited tonight and had the teatime set menu. Excellent prices and lovely food! Staff were very attentive and our food came out quickly despite it being busy. Please bring back the amazing homemade chips that you used to do though. Will definitely return and recommend.

This is our first visit here after wanting to come for so long. We was not disappointed, the inside is beautiful. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and could not do enough for us. My husband and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and chose Bird in the Barley, Messingham, for our meal! Having not been to a restaurant since Covid began, we were happy to feel normal again. Our meals were excellent and could not fault the service. We will certainly be booking again!!

We recently visited on a Friday evening. Staff were quick and attentive throughout. The food was lovely, fresh and homemade. Portion sizes were large and I couldn't manage to eat it all! The environment felt very covid safe and we had a lovely evening.

Bird and the Barley is open again. Social distancing observed. Food still as good as ever. No draught beers yet but excellent bottles of beer. Love the new decor throughout. Very light and inviting.

why are you here? why am i here? god i regret stepping foot in scunthorpe. i regret stepping foot in this pub. it smells of toilets. the food is bad. the drinks are bad. there is no toilet roll and there are huge skidz all down the side of the manky toilets. i ran away from here. don’t go to scunthorpe lol

First visit here with family after hearing good reviews and was not disappointed, greeted by a welcoming gentleman named Jay who directed us to our table and pointed out the specials of the day, lovely chap very engaging and polite, nothing was too much trouble for all the staff this afternoon. FOod was hot, delicious and served promptly with regards check ins too see how we we're enjoying our visit. Great value for money and a quaint place for a relaxing lunch! Will definately return!

We visit the Bird in the Barley. Today for my birthday. Had a lovely Sunday roast beef dinner. And my favourite cheesecake.

We called on the spare of the moment for a bar meal. The lighting was very poor, we were placed in a corner out the way.I had the steak pie,chip and peas .When it arrived I started to eat and found more mushrooms than meat, I do not like mushrooms and nothing on the menu said mushrooms.I did ask and the lady went to check and she said they put mushrooms in all the steak pies.I didn't eat the pie.I would not go back again and would not recommend the place to anybody

Booked a table here last minute as we fancied a bit of a date night and we hadn't visited for a while.The staff were really accommodating and friendly, and changed our table without question when we didn't like the one we were allocated. We both ordered sirloin steak and they were both delicious. In fact, I would go so far as to say the best steaks we've had for a long time. Then came the sweet. I had the cheesecake of the day and I wasn't disappointed. Once again, delicious.Will definitely come more often.

We went with two of our friends. For a meal last night. As usual it was very good. And our friends really enjoyed it. The food was excellent. As was the service. A lovely cosy pub.

This was very close to my cousin's home so we had lunch there a couple of times.The Grimsby Haddock & Chips is a must! We also had the steak pie, Bacon Chop - very tasty!Good selections of beers & ciders.Beautiful interior with a nice roaring fire. Excellent staff.

Just been for a meal with my parents mum had a lovely moist lasagne dad had steak and ale pie the steak chunks were so tender pastry was just right and the flavour of the pie was great

Evening meal with a very good choice from the menu. Did not have too long to wait after ordering and when the food came it was top knotch.The pub is warm and welcoming.The staff are very friendly.Particular thanks to Tom for making excellent coffee and Glen for serving us with a smile.

This was a perfect family meal. The teatime specials menu had a really good selection all homemade, with perfect portion sizes to allow you room for all 3 courses. The staff were excellent making sure the teething 7 month old in the party was looked after too. We did feel very sorry for the poor lady who he decided he wasn't really keen on, despite her bringing him his own special biscuit for dessert.

Totally shocked at what I witnessed tonight the manager's customer service skills are shocking the way he spoke to a lady who was making a complaint about a big black hair in her butter

One of the best places to eat in the local area. Good, fresh and high quality food with fresh produce and always a variety of options on the menu. Well worth a visit and off the beaten path so you really need word of mouth to know to go here!

We came for Fathers Day, the food on offer was very limited and not a good range so I was left disappointed. The dessert sounded amazing but the portion size on the Jam Roly Poly was ridiculously small. The service was excellent however and other people in the group were left satisfied, but I was not

What's happened to the chicken curry, it was fantastic but, the last twice we have been in, a third of the chicken has disappeared and been replaced by potato, why? don't spoil a good dish, take the potatoes out, put the chicken back in and adjust the price.

First visit here and couldn't fault it at all, it was clean and had a great atmosphere, the staff were friendly and efficient and the food was amazing, very tasty and reasonably priced would definitely recommend and will definitely visit here again.

We regularly visit with friends to enjoy the teatime special which is excellent value. Last night was no exception and we will definitely be back. We cannot fault the food or the service. A bonus is that we are never rushed to leave the table once we have eaten and the atmosphere is so relaxed, friendly and welcoming.

My husband and I haven't been here for a while but decided to revisit today for Sunday lunch. Booking was easy, we called in the day before to do it in person. We were greeted warmly, showed to our table and our order was taken. We both chose the roast beef and it was absolutely delicious, it melted in the mouth. The portion sizes were enough, we were brought extra gravy and the staff were very attentive. We did choose a dessert each.....because we could not because we were still hungry! Two mains, two desserts and two soft drinks £30. We won't leave it so long next time.

As vegetarians, there is always a challenge in finding good, interesting and filling eating houses. This one advertises itself as vegetarian friendly, but I have to say that had I been, say, trawling round an unfamiliar town centre looking for somewhere for that night's meal, I would not have chosen this one from an examination of the menu - there was a lot more, and more interesting, choice in the carnivore section of the menu.. However, that was not the purpose of the visit - it was a group thing for an after Christmas celebration, so we had to make the best of it. The creamy garlic mushroom starters were good, though I prefer my garlic mushrooms to be of the battered and fried variety, and the main course, a goat cheese in filo pastry tart was OK, and probably the better of the 3 choices available for veggies, but even though there were two of the tarts on the plate, it was far less filling than the comparable fleshy options - where folks had, for instance, gammon steaks that filled a large dinner plate such that everything else had to be served on top of the meat. Several people were unable to finish the serving, whereas I was left with plenty of room for further delicacies. It has been a constant gripe of mine that contrary to the view held by just about all caterers, vegetarians are not stick insects - I am about 200 pounds of active male and I have an appetite to match. The fact that I prefer to fill that appetite with other than meat should not make a difference.

Very friendly excellent service and the food is cooked to perfection. We had steak and it was cooked exactly how we had asked for it to be cooked. We usually go here on a teatime and have a special which are always delicious,and home cooked.

Well what can i say been today with the hubby for christmas lunch it was 110pc as always every thing was so fresh main was nice and hot well done from the kitchen staff to the front of house see you all tomorrow for round two merry christmas and a happy new year to you all

The food was ok , not a very big menu, but .......... NO BABY CHANGING FACILITIES! We were told to either change our baby's dirty nappy on the disabled toilet floor or on a sofa in the bar area! I wasn't willing to put my baby on a toilet floor neither was I willing to give other diners the experience of having too see a dirty nappy being changed and probably getting all sorts on the sofa! I worry about the hygiene of a place that suggests that! We had to use our car seat while the baby got cold. Ruined our experience

I had never been before but I would definitely be back. There was four of us, between us we had the curry, fish and chips, liver & onions and mushroom stroganoff. All of the meals were excellent and nothing was left on the plates. The two men in the party had desert, one the apple and blackberry crumble and the other stick toffee pudding and they asked for ‘oceans’ of custard. Desert came with custard on and another jug of custard with it - two very happy men. I had the coffee with the other lady in the party - we got a pot to share with enough for two cups each.

Went last week for an evening meal with friends we had starters and main courses I had the soup which was hot and tasted very good and the steak pie again good portion friends had vegetarian pie and both said it was brilliant a few drinks and the bill was under £100 so would be happy to go again as would our friends

Booked room after funeral in the Conservatory. Very disappointed how the room was set out. No table cloths on the tables, and the room was in need of updating .( We came here for a Wedding Anniversary 2 years ago and the room was lovely). Buffet was ok but we thought it was expensive per person. Lot`s of sandwiches more than anything else really. Overall we felt like they could not be bothered.

Fabulous meal last night. Hot and tasty food, good choices on the tea time special menu. Relaxing atmosphere. Great service from Glenis for reserving us a table despite me forgetting to leave my number when I left a message to book !

Nice welcome from the lad behind the bar. Shown to our table but we asked to move as it was stuck out in the middle of the bar area. There were other free tables for 2 against the walls but after some deliberation we were offered a pokey table next to the bar/coffee machine. Decided to stay where we were. Assumed the other, better twos were pre-booked but no one came whilst we were there. All a bit odd, they should have just moved us to a nice table. Not a great start. The waitress who took our order seemed a bit flustered, not very smiley. Starters were ok although the pate came with a tomato relish type thing. Should have been something sweet. No butter with the toast. Main courses were also ok. The roast beef was nice and tender. Veg a little bland taste wise. Yorkshire Pudding burnt and hard. Fish pie was tasty, but a small portion. Citrus cheesecake itself was nice but why serve it on a sickly sweet strawberry syrup type thing you put on an ice cream? Not necessary and actually spoils it. The same lad was nice and chatty as we left. Overall though we left disappointed. Apart from the lad, just did not feel that anyone valued our custom. No effort made, very little interaction. Average food. Our first time there but will not be going back. To be honest, they’re probably not bothered.

We nearly always choose the steak pie which is just superb. Packed full with melt-in-your-mouth meat and topped with delicious, shortcrust suet pastry. Never disappoints.

The staff are Lovely and always go above and beyond , the food is always brilliant when we have been and my son always requests we go there for our meals out. The chicken curry is his favourite.

Sorry to say after hearing about this place thought we would try last night with friends,and sorry to say it was a dried up scampi and chips, our friends meals were not good at all and no one even came to ask if all was o.k which is the norm at most places.didnt think it was value for money at all and won't be returning.

Not sure if we were lucky, or just that our booking clashed with an England World Cup match, but I was pleased they had a table.

A fab night celebrating my Mums 80th, catering for 31 people from 5 years old to 86 years old.

Arrived for a pre-booked table, but had to make a bit of an effort to be taken notice of. The person behind the bar was serving a customer, but there were two waiting staff close by, who didn't look busy but didn't ask if they could help. I had to attract the attention of one of them to find where we would be sitting. It took a while to get served at the bar even though there were no other customers queueing.
