good food restaurant smelt of dogs as allowed...staff petting dogs no washing hands and serving drinks no hygiene turned me off my food

I love this pub. Amazing food, great selection of real ales, friendly and welcoming staff, and a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. They hosted our wedding and we could not have asked for anything to be better. Dee, Terry and team went all out to make sure the function room was decorated beautifully, and the whole day went as smoothly as possible.

Came to this pub after an incident on m6 stopped us getn too cheltenham races what a great job all staff done lookn after 50 lads who needed food and drink great atmosphere and good company was had by us all thank you so much for the sandwich platter gesture at the end of day really nice gesture

Visited today with family for Sunday lunch. We all had a carvery, they’re not shy with the meats either, which was absolutely delicious, (no grumbles about anything from any of us), followed by a very nice dessert each. Staff were attentive but not overly so and very friendly, couldn’t do enough for us. This was our first visit but definitely not our last. Highly recommend.

this place was dead for many years but since terry and dee have taken it over it has turned into a thriving pub with a great list of ales, great atmosphere and an awesome set up. perfect to waste an evening with friends

Went in for an all day breakfast absolutely shocking tasted cheap and greasy. The landlord threatened me because I asked for a refund. Terry is a vile man I’ve uploaded a picture Looks the part but tasted like one of his cleaning products.

Attended the pub for rememberence sunday with a few veterans and unfortunately sat in the wrong seats, landlords wife was rude, aggressive and abusive when she asked us to move, not the behaviour i woukd expect to veterans who served our contray also when there was a 11 year old also present. Will never step foot in the place again, would never recommend to anyone. Totally horrendous behaviour.....

Alas we were let down by the "landlady" rememberance sunday⁰. 10 of us sat in an area that a so called "regular"had"reserved" landlady was very rude and asked us to move. We were on our second round of drinks by this time (approx £60) spent. We left for a better atmosphere, and cheaper. Sorry Bird in Hand. Your missus blew it. And! I might add , we are not "once a year" we USED to come in often. No more.

Had the most amazing Sunday lunch with a group here for a friends birthday. Best carvery in Stafford by miles. The staff were very helpful and accommodating, highly recommend 👌

I very rarely go out for a carvery as I prefer to cook my own, but i am converted! What an amazing Sunday roast. All fresh home cooked food with the most amazing roast potatoes. I had the beef and it melted in your mouth plus at £10.95 it's was really good value for money. We will definitely be back. X

Me and my family visited here on Easter Sunday to sample their carvery. What can I say. Absolutely amazing!!!!! I had the turkey and gammon, which there was plenty of. Lots of choice of veggies and potatoes. Everything was piping hot. Definitely the best carvery we have ever had. Even satisfying my dad, which is not easy😁 I have been in for a drink many times but have never tried the food. That will change now. Thankyou to the bar and waiting on staff. They couldn't have done anymore to make us feel welcome and look after us. Superb 🍻🍻

Thought we’d give the carvery another go, hadn’t had one here since before covid but we have been in on other occasions for food/ drink. Quite a few people have been raving about the carvery so I thought let’s go as I needed to pop into town. Personally the carvery wasn’t for me, I’m pretty sure most of the veg is frozen or tinned. Fine at home but Id expect fresh when eating out and paying for it. I ordered the chicken which came out as breast butterflied, I love chicken and was bit disappointed that there was no skin/ not off a freshly cooked chicken ( that’s just my personal preference). My mum ordered the lamb she left quite a bit of it because it was fatty may have just been the cut, yorkie also quite soggy. On the plus side the roasts were lovely and gravy very tasty! We did have pudding but ordered off the menu, we then overheard there were ‘special desserts’ unfortunately this wasn’t shared with us and these were ok but nothing to write home about. I do appreciate it was busy and the pub looks after the repeat custom. I’d probably look at the logistics of people queuing up for food and take a table out, people we’re pretty much standing round our table in intervals. As I said before we have visited before, lasagne is really nice I just would not return for a carvery. I guess we’ve got different expectations/ preferences when it comes to food.

***I've had to edit this review because things have changed since eating there*** I visited this place for the first time in 20+ years. It used to be a popular place for me and my friends to visit on a night out. When my parents offered to treat me to lunch there, I jumped to it. It's a busy little pub, lots of staff. My parents ordered off their specials menu, as did I. I thought I'd go for the chicken parmigiana because its easy to do and normally full of flavour. The food came out and I was impressed by the chips which were hot but I cut into the chicken, took a mouthful, but it didn't seem right. It was almost gooey and slimey. I had a look at the chicken and it looked like it had been minced. It was also cold and pink, very pink. Took it to the bar for a replacement and an apology. Next one came out, same salad and same chips, but the food looked cooked. Cut into it and it was pink again. Not as pink or alive as the first, but cold and pink. I didn't bother ordering anything else because the wait meant everyone else had finished and I just gave up hope that the microwave technician was actually able to cook anything. Didn't eat anything until that evening because I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth. The following day I was woken by extreme cramps and nausea at around 4am and I've not been the same since. Based on the age of their clientele, they could have made someone seriously ill or worse, killed them. I'll be avoiding this place like the plague and I'd suggest anyone ordering food to check that it's cooked

Called in for Seniors Menu lunch today. Food was fab. Hot and tasty. Great value. But above all the service and staff were 'ace'. Couldn't not have a pint.

Went here last night and the landlord and landlady was very rude cause we was enjoying ourselves they want people just to go in order a drink sit down and say nothing won't go in again there are plenty more pubs in Stafford to enjoy yourself

Went to this pub for a pre booked function but to be fair didn't want to go in as my niece left this place a couple of months ago due to stress.Had to wait about 10 mins to get served as staff would rather play and flirt with each,then ask to be served and told to wait but doesn't surprise me.Now I know why rom left when she was there they whipped her with beer towels and after watching the antics of the staff I can see why.But that's what you get when you employ people cash in hand 80% of the staff don't go through the books(and I know as also been told also from the pot washer)badly run public house everything to make money I wonder if the brewery or tax know !!!!!

A very good roast meat lunch, and IMHO value for money. A server carves your meat (today the choice was beef or gammon, or chicken to order) and then you help yourself to a range of vegetables, yorkshire puddiing, stuffing etc. I particularly like this...

In my opinion, the best pub/food combination in Stafford. It's owned by Black Country Ales, so you're guaranteed a good choice of ales (usually at least 10), but unlike a lot of their pubs this one serves food. There's plenty to good value options to...

5 mins from train station, dozen real ales at very reasonable prices, great friendly team, nice quiet areas to sit on proper chairs/tables. Absolute 5* Only had time for a couple of pints, but will be in again when next at station.

Several visits to the bird in Hand ,I've enjoyed Lunch, evening meal and breakfast . The standard of the service and quality of the food is the reason we keep returning . This is business with a passion for food and drink and it shows .

The food was too over cooked to eat & when asked if everything was ok and we explained that it wasn’t and gave t reasons why to which the reply was “well that’s just the standard here”. -As if it’s ok to waste our own money. I paid £8.40 for a main I didn’t even eat with no apology or refund.

First class food, great portion, great service you can't beat the value for money. We will be using the Bird in Hand again 100% family will be using it again.

Just had a fab meal at the bird, could not fault the food at all, we had a steak and partner had the pie, 2 much for me to eat. The social distance was really good you had enough space between tables and to move around. There are a choice of Real Ales to choose from as well

Had my daughter's babyshower here and it was fabulous. We were so looked after from the time of booking to the end of the babyshower. Nothing was too much trouble. They decorated for us and even gave us takeaway boxes for the left overs. As we had family up we went here for Sunday lunch and again it was faultless. Thank you Terry, Dee and staff.

We had a very nice lunch here. I had gammon which was delicious. The eggs were obviously free range, the yolks were dark orange. Chips crispy and dry. Friends were happy with their meals. Only criticism was my husbands steak and kidney pudding I am afraid this was dry but all in all we enjoyed our meals. We will definitely try again. We will try the Sunday carvery next.

In arranging a surprise party, this family run place could not do enough for us. We catered for 30, 50 arrived & there was still plenty of food to go around; take away boxes were put out for anyone who wanted to take some home too. The myriad of allergies they needed to deal with was easily catered for & clearly marked & kept separate.They even made sure they had wheatfree ale at our private bar that I could drinkThe DJ they hired for us provided the music we requested.They did all the decorations (we provided specific 1s & they ordered table wear to our colours) & all the clean up.I highly recommend the Bird in Hand for private parties with a mixture of adults & children

Large choice of real ales. Visited for Sunday lunch. Meat was excellent. Delicious. Vegetable choice was very limited. We thought we would try The Bird in Hand as a change from where we would normally go. However, we I'll be going back to our 'usual'. Good value though.

25 of us sat down for a pre-ordered lunch. Meals arrived pretty much altogether and the meals were well received.

First time in here for a long time. Had a lovely carvery, beef and veg, all well cooked,lots of choice. Followed by jam sponge and custard. Very good all round, staff very friendly, will definitely be going back and would recommend.

We booked the function room a couple of weeks ago for our football presentation evening.

Good quality carvery , friendly atmosphere, no skinny with the meat and a great selection of trad beers. Only problem drivi g so couldnt try. Well worth a divert of the M6 south at junction 14.

Would recommend this lovely little pub, we went for Sunday lunch some of our friends had carvery which went down a treat and some of us went for the main menu.

This was our second function in the Bird in Hand, the first was a family get together and this one was a birthday with friends. On both occasions Terry and his staff have looked after us superbly, Private room with a great buffet and our own bar. The food was really good and plenty of it and a good selection of drinks as you would expect. The selection of quality beers are well cared for. All the staff are friendly and go out of there way to make it a great evening. Would highly recommend.

What can I say, you certainly won’t leave hungry after eating the Sunday Carvery, with generous portions of meat and superb freshly prepared veg’ you will have to go a long way for a better Carvery in Stafford. Best cauliflower Cheese I have had in an age and tasty roast potatoes served by a real character of a Landlord. Simple surroundings but tasty food. Thank you, we will return.

We've visited this pub a few times recently, and there's always a warm welcome. Good selection of beers, wines and spirits. Lovely open fire, and home made rolls in the chiller. Next time we're going for food.

Friendly pub with a very warm welcome. The pub is in a traditional style with plenty of space around two bars. There is also a good out door space.

The four of us had a really good meal early evening, the first good sign was a very busy pub on a Thursday night, the second good sign was the quality of the beer which was exceptional, all of our meals were very good the two steaks we had between us were cooked to perfection, you Will not be disappointed with either the beer or food and the service was excellent as well.

Having had some disappointing experiences with real ale in Stafford and the surrounding area, my eyes lit up when a perfectly poured pint was put in front of me at the Bird in Hand.

On a real ale pub crawl with CAMRA we found this pub not on our list, but glad we did.

Popped in yesterday & had a very tasty steak meal served with a cooling shandy. Sat in the garden was nice to see a separated area in the garden for smokers& non smokers. Staff very welcoming.

1st July 2018 with my family in The Bird in Hand, Stafford to celebrate my 61st birthday and what a pleasurable afternoon we had. Food was absolutely top class whether it was from the main menu or from the carvery.

Typical English pub, multi-rooms, outside space, clean with decent food. Had many meals here none poor, "Greek" Salad is variable but always good and often exceptional.

I know this pub from years ago when my father frequented it, his favourite hostelry.

I stayed over the road from the pub and it was recommended by the locals. I have now been twice and enjoyed the food, beer and the welcome.

What a lovely place this is I would 120% going back here all of us loved the place and the food and the staff... we all will return here ASAP... you can't beat a good old pub that sells cobs and sausage rolls..

I visited the Bird in Hand on a Wednesday afternoon as part of the Black Country Real Ale Trail and very pleased was I that I did too.

Out for a quick pint on our way to picking up food we chanced on a pub that I haven't visited in years. The run up to Christmas it was busy and vibrant but welcoming staff and a good atmosphere. A small but varied range of real ales and really a good experience. Not my favourite pub in Stafford but probably just shy of my top 10

With a group of friends we sampled excellent ales and good grub in this sensitively refurbished town pub. The place is sparklingly clean in all corners ,the staff welcoming and friendly and we could find nothing to criticise other than one another

Really enjoyed both our mains here, portion sizes a little big for us but great honest pub food. I had the faggots and my other half had an all day brunch.

I haven't been in the Bird in Hand for a few years following a succession of clueless landladies/lords. It was good to see that it is now being run by the Black Country Brewery with some good beers on. However a previous visit by a relative had recommended the sandwiches. Unfortunately the cheese and tomato roll I ordered was an unappetising soggy burger roll with a bland processed cheese slice. The other sandwiches were not much better and one of my companions, who ordered the beef roll ate the meat and left the roll. It's such a simple thing to get right, get it wrong and it reflects badly. The lunch meals I observed were simple but well cooked and well presented and the service was pleasant. I may return but maybe just for a pint and a packet of crisps

I am vegetarian and I was well looked after. A goats cheese tart veggie roast potatoes and Gravy. Then vegetables from the cavary well cooked Cabbage and cauliflower cheese. Hubby enjoyed his roast beef. Would well recommend and we will return. Good value for money.

Our first visit since it has recently been done out and we will definitely be back! We sat in the lounge, but the other areas looked just as comfortable. The beer garden was being well used as well .Great atmosphere, drinks well kept, and friendly staff made for an excellent night out. Meals not served after 5pm on a saturday when we went , but they had a selection of cobs, sausage rolls etc in the fridge . Enjoyed a cheese and onion cob :) Husband worked his way through quite a few of the well kept real ales , and although there were several ciders to choose from I stuck to the 'Thatchers Gold' which was the freshest tasting I've ever encountered. Looking forwards to our next visit :)

The bird in hand has had a huge revamp.This all new pub is well worth a visit, with a lovely beer garden.Very friendly pub and staff.We celebrated my daughters 30th birthday here in the function room which has its own private beer garden. The buffet what Dee and Terry put on was spot on.You will not be disappointed in the all new bird in hand

Real Ale Hand pulls . Dog friendly . No pool table or jukebox. Friendly staff . Rolls , porkpie ,sausage rolls and scotch eggs. Cooked food to follow in a few weeks .

Newly refurbished so it was very clean ,Terry and Dee are perfect host's an ideal place for real ale drinkers all ales are listed on a board with alcohol content colour and price ,There was no hot food but roles were available which is what you want in a real ale pub

This is a nice little pub just off the main town centre throughfare - just how a real pub should be and you will not be disappointed
