We had a wonderful stay at The Bird & Carter. This B&B is truly wonderful. We were looking for a nice peaceful stay away from London and that’s exactly what we got. We were greeted with fresh flapjack and milk in a thermos. Plus coffee bags and plenty of tea and fresh water which is just what you need after a long drive. The room was light and definitely big enough for a couple. The bathroom was clean and tidy with fresh clean fluffy towels big enough to wrap round you. The bed was super comfy. Availability of tv channels, Netflix etc was great. Not that we were going to spend a lot of time in the room but it’s nice for the option. A couple of walking books were available for us to look at which is great when you don’t know the area. Also the website is great for local things to go and where to eat. Our surroundings were beautiful and peaceful. A lovely couple of chairs outside our room and some benches down by the stream. Breakfast was excellent. You can have granola and also a full English, small English or veggie breakfast. We opted for the full and it was super fresh and tasty. A wide range of coffee and tea is available with alternative milk options. Great for me as I love an oat milk latte. The choice of toast between sourdough and granary as well is great. Plus fresh orange juice. Perfect. The breakfast area is quaint and cosy and Annie was the perfect host throughout our stay. Bird and Carter also have a lovely farm shop which is about a 20 min drive from their b&b. We grabbed some items to take back home with us. The quiche was delicious. We opted for a slice of the salmon and also bacon and spinach. Plus an array of salad bits including potato salad, slaw and green. Plus we couldn’t resist a sausage roll. Everything was fresh and delicious. The quiche especially was so creamy. It melted in your mouth. If we lived closed I’d be there all the time. The cafe looks lovely and there’s an abundance of other food to buy such as cheeses, wine and beer, crisps, oils, crackers and pasta. Plus much much more. Definitely worth a visit. While we were staying at the b&b we explored the surrounding area. Including 2 pubs which are about a 30-40 min walk away. We also ventured to Durdle Door which is just over an hour away if you’re looking for a seaside visit. We would definitely stay again. Thanks Annie

VERY HIGH SUSPICION OF VERY UNDER COOKED PORK SAUSAGES. The thin skins of both one inch thick sausages were medium brown as one would expect. The next 4mm being grey, synonymous with cooked pork, and the rest of both sausages distinctly pink, synonymous with very under cooked pork. No apology at the time. No apology in their reply to my written communication to them. Instead they argued that the sausages were properly cooked because the temperature probe said so. They also argued that the pinkness is due to the high salt content. If that was the case then the first 4mm would also be pink. Or alternatively the first 4mm miraculously has a lower salt content than the rest of the sausage. In my view it is a ridiculous argument and more in keeping with 'saving face'. On a previous occasion elsewhere I was assured, by an experienced chef, that some suspiciously anemic looking sausages were properly cooked because the temperature probe said so. I was later rushed to hospital with food poisoning. I will not accept another chef's over confidence in a temperature probe when my own eyes tell me something different. Consequently my advice is this: if anyone desires a pink pork sausage then I would recommend the Bird & Carter of Fonthill Bishop, but if not then avoid the Bird & Carter of Fonthill Bishop.

My husband and I recently bought a new tent and decided to use it one more time before it got too cold, we stayed in a fantastic friendly campsite in Wiltshire. As we were packing away our tent we decided it would be nice to stay another night somewhere and go home the following day. My mother had mentioned Bird and Carter having seen an article in one of the Sunday papers BnB's under £100 so we gave them a call to see if they had a room available. We were at the time standing in a camping field with a limited phone/internet signal. After 3 attempts at calling we were about to give up and someone answered the phone at around 11.30am. When we arrived at the BnB the room felt really cold the windows were open, steamed up and dripping with water. We were really hungry so decided rather than driving to one of the nearby pubs we would have Sunday lunch in their cafe. We were showed to a table and given a menu they were serving an all day breakfast. We should have at that point left but didn't want to appear rude. So my husband ordered eggs royale after about 15 minutes we were told that they had run out of this so he ordered the Haddock kedgeree around 5 mins later they returned and said they had run out of this too. He eventually had eggs benedict £10.95 and I had the veggie breakfast £12.50. The food was fine although eating breakfast at 2pm on a Sunday was a mistake we should have gone somewhere else for a lovely Sunday lunch but we had had enough of driving and we were hungry. After brunch we drove to a very pretty pub/hotel for a drink/coffee. We returned to the BnB. Our room was extremely small you could just about walk down the side of the bed to get into bed but once the curtains were closed there really wasn't room to do that. The windows stayed dripping wet the entire time we were there whether the windows were open or closed. I tried to have a wash in the basin but the hot water was only luke warm, I think the hot water was struggling with the heating being on in our room. The loo flush didn't work properly you had to flush it 3 or 4 times to make it work which was really annoying especially in the middle of the night! There was only one chair in the room I had to get into bed as there was no where else to sit. By around 7pm we were really hungry but didn't want to get back in the car to go out for supper and we were too tired so we stayed hungry until breakfast the following morning. We had our dog with us which made the room feel even smaller it really was a tiny room which cost £125.00 for the night with our dog this is in our opinion very over priced especially considering the issues we had in the room. We stay in hotels and B&B's quite a bit and so we do know about these things. We received an email from Bird and Carter asking us to leave a review on their website, I emailed them instead with our feedback and said I don't wish to leave a bad review on your website but wanted to give you our feedback. I received a very aggressive phone call from the owner who just talked at me and over me and was quite rude and arrogant and told me there was nothing wrong with the hot water so was basically telling me I was lying. I am afraid I gave up trying to talk to her and eventually put the phone down as she was just not in least bit interested in what I was saying and just continued justifying how wonderful her BnB was and how everyone loved it. A very disappointing experience and I don't appreciate being spoken down to in that fashion to by the owner. The waitress who served us in the cafe was very pleasant.

‘Nice’ but disappointing Stopped for lunch en route to a weekend away in Somerset Had to ask how to get into the cafe from the car park - it’s not obvious Waited whilst ignored to be seated Menu looked very good Smoked haddock kedgeree was extremely disappointing - very dry - just like a packet of microwave rice sprinkled with curry powder plus a hard boiled egg and some vacuum packed smoked haddock flakes - couldn’t finish it - far too dry and inauthentic Pulled pork bap and chips was fine Service at lunchtime disorganised and slow We couldn’t wait any longer for dessert Everyone was very ‘nice’ but the overall experience was disappointing

Really nice menu and food, particularly enjoyed the Kedgeree. Let down by the tardy service. Everyone was very nice, the restaurant wasn’t busy but I waited half an hour between courses. We will try again, but maybe the Monday lunch team isn’t the most efficient.

We stumbled across this gem on our travels back from Cornwall and it was the perfect place to break the journey. The setting is beautiful and the welcome warm. The menu is beyond the expectations of a rural eatery with things such as bang bang cauliflower which was incredible and Padron peppers but there were still the firm family favourites, such as the scampi in a basket, light and fluffy just as you would want. Well worth a visit!

Wonderful 2 night stay with my sister & close family for her sons wedding. . Our stay at Bird and Carter was fantastic, from the Friday night evening meal for 14 people which due to bad weather was moved inside but they still managed to get us all sat on one large table. The food and service was great. We booked all their B&B rooms & no one was disappointed the rooms were clean and comfortable & tastefully decorated. On the Saturday a number of additional people arrived prior to the wedding and they provided a sandwich /snack platter which was gratefully received. A huge thank you to the staff present on the Friday and Saturday in particular Eliza who went above and beyond doing everything she could to make our stay special even chasing down an Amazon parcel that had been ordered to be sent to Bird & Carter but was delivered to a neighbouring resident. We had a great stay and would definitely return

Disgusting place should be closed down !! Rough around the edges, service abominable and to top it all no manager/owner on premises. We had an emergency during the night (a wasp nest in our room) I am disabled and was frantic. Tried the mobile number of owner - no signal , when we eventually got through it went to answer machine. We left at 3am and the owner eventually phoned us at 7am when we arrived home. He was extremely rude and said he would call back. Mrs. Bird called back at 9am admitting there was a wasps nest in our room and we would be refunded!! The point being NOBODY was contactable in an emergency. Health and Safety should be notified.

The Bradley Hare is an elegant enterprise but tends to cater for diners and private parties rather than dog walkers looking for a pint and a sandwich; indeed the lunchtime snack menu is almost non existent. On occasions the bar closes completely to facilitate private functions. In short, the Bradley Hare is perhaps more of a "restaurant with rooms" rather than a traditional hostelry.
