We stayed at the Grove Arms for two nights in June of 2024 and have nothing but good things to say about the place. Management was friendly, and bent over backwards to make our stay amazing. Including letting us stash our luggage there well after checkout. Our room was clean, comfortable, and decorated with a canine theme. The food was great, and the breakfast was better than we could have hoped. The dinner menu consists of classic English pub fare, including fish and chips and steak and ale pie. The pub is bright and inviting, and the locals that hang out there made our stay fantastic. If you want information about local walking paths, Phil is your man. His directions got us all the way to Shaftesbury and Gold Hill and back on foot without incident. Thanks to Daren, Andy, Simon and the rest of the local crew for making our time in Ludwell so memorable. We cannot recommend the Grove Arms strongly enough.

Extremely disappointed, I used this pub regularly both for food and drink. It now has new owners and I must say very disappointed. The staff seemed lovely, however not presentable… the pub stank of cigarettes as if people had been smoking inside, it was dirty, the glasses where filthy, salt and pepper pots where dirty, with this, salt was put into the pepper pot which wasn’t cleaned when refilled. It all just felt extremely dirty. The food was not great at all. £8.95 for just a single baguette which was supposed to come with a salad but didn’t due to running out, even though there wasn’t one person in there. The baguettes were not cooked. £8.95 for a cheese and tomato baguette on its own! Mouldy carrot was also found underneath the cheese and tomato baguette. BLT baguette wasn’t hot, bread wasn’t cooked which personally i found disappointing as most places cook baguettes through so they have a crunch! I couldn’t even eat half! Again no salad or anything apart from sprinkled mixed herbs on top. When we asked for a refund we was given a £2 coin, the response to it and the response when we said we was disappointed was also not satisfactory. Half a coke, a j20 a bowl of chips, and the food stated above for £30! Feel like iv wasted £30 completely! I think lots of improvements need to be made in order to get this pub back to how it used to be! Would not be going back in a rush which is a huge shame considering it’s one of our locals. Wouldn’t recommend and especially not for an evening meal. I hope they can turn it around as the place has lots of potential and people lovely however lots needs to be improved

A very disappointing lunch. Food was awful. I had old carrot from someone else’s meal on my baguette not fresh carrot at that !! Dirty and grim. Won’t be going back. No salad but charged for this on the menu baguette and salad no explanation why there was no salad . Asking them if I should have salad they said yes but we ran out of lettuce no apologies. I asked for a refund £2 given back after having to repeatedly ask for a refund. £8.95 for a dry baguette with a small amount of grated cheese and two slices of tomato. Worse lunch I’ve ever had!! How can you get a baguette so badly wrong?

Just dropped in out of the blue as it looked so inviting. I had an egg mayo sandwich, my wife had a cheese and tomato baguette as we only wanted a snack. But they were obviously freshly prepared and absolutely delicious. I told the new chef (I think his name was Neil - sorry, memory not what it was!) that our sandwich and baguette were the best we'd ever tasted. Next time, we'll try the full works. A very satisfying and friendly visit.

Very disappointing stay. When I had booked in August, I had seen really good reviews. On the day of our booking, we were told our reservation wasn't on the system - despite having booking confirmation and having paid in full a week prior. The pub had been taken over by a new owner and none of the bookings had been transferred over - Very poor form. When we arrived, we were told that there would be fresh breakfast in the morning. It might have been the worst breakfast display I've ever seen - 3 cereals and a loaf of hovis, 2 near empty cartons of cheap bitter juice. When we were heading out at 2pm, breakfast dishes still hadn't been cleared away. Reviews had mentioned a lovely cooked breakfast a few months ago which absolutely was not the case. Only had one roll of toilet paper in our room and when we ran out, there was nobody around to ask for more. It sounds like this used to be a really good spot that's gone massively downhill since the new owners. Wouldn't recommend.

The last time we visited on a Sunday lunchtime, it was closed! We happened upon an episode of TV's Hotel Inspector, and saw how it had been totally transformed, int a warm, welcoming, dog friendly pub, so decided next time we were in the area we would visit. On entering, it became clear that it had fallen back into its old ways. It was cold, miserable, and unwelcoming. The menu for a Sunday roast was extremely limited, with no sign of any dog menu! There was no roast chicken, so my wife chose the chicken pie! Not available. I mentioned we had sent them a message asking about any chicken dishes, but that message went unanswered. As far as being dog friendly is concerned, it's no more dog friendly than any other pub. Saying hello to your dog, does not mean your pub is dog friendly, and is a far cry from how it was portrayed on the TV programme. We certainly won't be revisiting!

Decided to pay a visit for Sunday lunch as had heard good reviews. Didn’t disappoint. Huge portions, traditionally cooked, huge Yorkies, choice of beef, pork and turkey. £13.50 for large, £10.50 for small. Other food available including veggie. Don’t let the cheaper -than-average prices put you off - we’ll definitely be back.

Awful rude barmaid/waitress. Tasteless food. Really not worth the trip. We arrived at 5:50pm and were told 'we don't start food until 6, did you make a reservation? I already have a table of 3 and a table of 4' (there were at least 6, unreserved tables). 'you'll have to wait until 6' (as I expected). 'you'll have to sit by the mirror so I don't forget you're there ( it's not a big restaurant). Staff (one scraggly haired, messily dressed barmaid) was so rude, they weren't busy but we appeared to be inconvenient for her despite that. The risotto, which was big enough to feed a family of 4 was bland and tasteless. The cheese burger literally had a slab of cheese dumped lazily on an over grilled beef burger. This used to be a great pub with excellent service....such a shame it's not at all worth visiting ever again.

It was a bit of a reunion and the staff were completely accommodating to that, keeping the bar open slightly later and just generally letting us relax without reprimanding us for being a little bit exciteable. Breakfast was lovely and Heather was very warm and attentive. She also did me a huge favour by sending up a package of items that I'd left due to my head being all over the place post wedding. Not a chance. What amazing food cooked to perfection, a really decent amount of food. Quality service from the start from Heather's infectious cackling laugh to head chef Mandys cooking. My wife and I sat with the 2 menus offered and ordered drinks. When the waitress came to take the order I was vary specific about the burger I wanted as there was a few available and my wife was also clear in what she requested. We were served items from the house standard menu which was much more expensive and totally different. We were asked if we wanted dessert menu and at that point realised the mistake that had been made which we highlighted to the waitress. She was very apologetic but told us we should have highlighted which menu. What we ordered was only on one menu but she made no attempt to rectify her mistake. We therefore had no dessert. This was our anniversary meal as we moved into our house 1 year ago today. Don’t think I will go back soon.

We spent three nights here, and we must particularly praise the friendly staff, who coped in a professional manner with a number of unexpected problems while we were there. The boiler had packed up on Bank Holiday Monday, so there was no hot water, but Heather called us while we were en route, explained the situation, and offered the first night half-price. She was also able to allow us to change our room on the first two nights to one at the back away from the road. What with other problems beyond their control, such as direct access from Shaftesbury being closed over several nights for roadworks, and several delivery issues, they did a good job nevertheless. Meals were served in generous portions and piping hot, and all dogs were beautifully behaved. There’s lots to visit in the area, and we enjoyed our stay.

An expensive B&B that doesn’t give value for money. The rooms are not cleaned to a high standard (cobwebs) and the staff can be rude and abrupt, they certainly do not like guests who ask for things to be done, i.e change a lightbulb, apparently this is ‘complaining’ The cleaner should certainly have a training refresh to remind her that vents and radiators need cleaning as well. The restaurant has a very poor vegetarian choice but overall the quality of cooking is pretty bad. I was served triple cooked chips that tasted like they’d been waiting all day to be served. The owner has no customer service skills and also seems to lack people skills. Most rooms need a total re-furbishment (mouldy shower grouting and very old fashioned bathrooms) and the carpets are a bit tacky. For £80 per night it is not worth the money when there are other nicer and cleaner B&B’s at a lower price with friendly owners. AVOID.

All was calm until he came back to the bar and hostilities resumed. The barking of the dogs was loud and continuous. Again the dog was taken outside, only to reappear and more barking ensued. There appeared to be no consideration for anyone else in the pub trying to enjoy the evening. Eventually the dog was taken away. If this had been two men being aggressive towards each other such behaviour would not have been tolerated. We also felt the waitress was too much 'in your face'. Calling everyone my darling at every opportunity is not acceptable. The food was ok, but probably won't be making a return visit.

We stopped for a quick refreshment after visiting a local venue. We were greeted with a warm welcome and friendly service. We only ordered drinks and were sitting outside, and the staff quickly brought out cushions to sit on. Anyone new to the area, could get plenty of ideas from the venue leaflets on display. We even picked up a couple for future reference for ourselves. We will call in again next time in the area.

Having past the Grove Arms but never gone in we decided to give it a try last week and went there for a light lunch - it was delicious and the staff friendly and helpful. As it was my husband’s birthday we decided to return for dinner that evening. We were not disappointed!

Just returned from a family visit and had a lovely lunch in a very pleasant pub. The staff were very friendly and efficient and the food is of very high quality. Comfortable surroundings and welcoming atmosphere. I had the beautifully crispy battered fish and chips followed by an absolutely delicious chocolate fudge cheesecake with burnt orange sorbet. We all had something different and everyone was really complimentary about their choices. I'd recommend The Grove Arms. Feels just like home.

Booked a table for Mother’s Day and two of us had the roast which was really yummy. Gorgeous gravy and plenty of vegetables, roast potatoes and meat. We all had dessert. My husband really enjoys the Erin mess and I tried one of the specials toffee malteser tart with burnt orange sorbet. They we really lovely too.

I can't rate this pub restaurant highly enough. We booked Sunday lunch today for Mothers day and were not disappointed. We both chose roast beef and Yorkshire pud followed by rhubarb crumble. Tasted fresh and home made and a marked cut above the average Sunday roast. Service came with a smile and with no delay. At only 10.50 for roast beef with all the trimmings we shan't hesitate to return soon. Highly recommended.

A very nice pub. Take care when using the car park it is on a slpoe at the back of the pub.We parked on the bottom edge and a car had it's handbrake fail and it rolled into ours. Fortunately no damage. But you might not be so lucky.

We were staying in the area and popped in for dinner. The dogs were given a lovely welcome and the lady behind the bar was very understanding about the fact the youngster might have been a bit over excited. As it turned out, he behaved impeccably! Lovely, homely food and a good selection of drinks. Linked with the fabulous welcome, we certainly recommend. We were sorely tempted to buy the dogs some dinner as it's an option on the menu! A great touch!
