We stayed here for 2 nights over the weekend. The pub was incredibly clean, well presented and nothing was too much for the staff. The hotel room was immaculate and felt luxury. Would highly recommend and would stay again in the future.

Myself and my partner stayed here for the weekend last weekend for my best friends wedding, the staff were lovely, the manager went above and beyond for us, nothing was ever too much. The food was lovely ( coming from a picky eater) and the rooms are really nice, spacious and clean. We stayed in two different rooms over the weekend; Avon & little Somerfield. Both rooms were very spacious, comfortable and clean, the bathrooms are huge too so getting ready each morning isn’t really cramped. There was a mini fridge, bits for tea & coffee and a welcome pack in each room too! We will definitely be coming back, I couldn’t recommend staying here more! Thank you to Kes and all of the staff for a wonderful weekend!

Had a couple of nights here having stayed a few miles down the road & had popped in for a drink a couple of days before & really enjoyed a Sunday afternoon in a busy & very jovial bar so came back & stayed! Could not fault Kes & her team in any way, they all went the extra mile despite being short staffed as every other pub in the country! Food was really good as was breakfast being a continual (through staffing issues) served at the table, lovely fresh ham, cheeses, sour dough toast, fresh fruit salad, Greek yogurt & whatever else you fancied if they had it. Fantastic💞 The only downside was the bedroom we were in which was very tired. No fault of the team but of Butcombe who really should support their managers especially those who go more than the extra mile to give their customers that ‘special visit’ Weve stayed at other Butcombe pubs & it seems that they are neglecting one of their important revenue streams…their rooms! Great shame for the management who have to take the brunt of any complaints. Another unexpected surprise was the attached in the photo. Another guest at a nearby table happened to mention it was his birthday & my wife mentioned it was mine & the chef, can’t remember her name produced a ‘happy birthday! plate…how very thoughtful despite being busy! Thanks Kes & many apologies for this review being so late…we will see you again.

Although this is our local and we don’t often offer feedback, I felt we should praise the team at the H&G for the immense progress that they have made since taking over. So many events taking place and always something different going on. Last weekend was the garden cinema and it was superb. However, my reason for writing was the new menu, it was fresh, delicious and such a selection. My wife had the mixed fried seafood, the fritto misto and I had fish tacos. Both were superbly presented and very tasty. So good we went back the next night to try another couple of dishes. I had the lamb flatbread kofta and my wife had the burger. Again both were delicious, the kofta was one of the best meals I’ve had recently, the lamb was tender the whole dish just sang, wonderful food.

This location was perfect as we were two couples meeting halfway between Reading and Frome. I had a booking for lunch at 1.30 to allow for a walk around Malmesbury. We met at 11 but only managed to stop for coffee and a long chat. We arrived at the Horse and Groom for lunch. The Manager and her staff were very attentive and helpful. We order drinks and shared a dish of olives. For mains we ordered two roast beef and two pork belly. My wife loves crackling with her pork and she was delighted when we all received some. Not many restaurants will provide this. We finished the meal with cheese and biscuits and I had a delicious rhubarb sweet that they described as a blonde dish. We wanted to extend our stay and elected to take tea in the secluded garden. The lady manager was very friendly and thanked us for coming.

Visited this pub on a recommendation from friends what a shame the whole experience was poor apart from the great front of house colleagues that were great. Something has gone wrong at this pub , many options not available as running two menus doesn’t work for any kitchen so availability becomes an issue and my friend was let down with 3 choices not available My scotch egg was £7.50 and could have come out of a supermarket, two halves of an egg dumped on a plate very poor and not what would be expected! My Fish chips was over cooked and the curry sauce was very suspect! My colleagues burger was lukewarm and please don’t visit the Gents as the smell is not good and the walk is through a junk yard and leaky buckets for a ceiling leak ! I will not be returning and the photos on the website gallery are not reality such a shame !!

Outstanding quality from the menu with a wide range of choices, all served by a very attentive team and a lovely feel to the whole building. We will certainly be back!

Met a friend for lunch as it was her birthday and she was a butcombe pub member we had a free glass of wine or we could have had a bottle of Prosecco! I was nervous as the food had gone down hill afew months ago so I haven’t been back .but the food was amazing alovely menu almost too much to choose from as well as a specials board Land lady and her staff were very attentive and friendly .. their new chef came runner up in pub chef of the year

Lovely 'proper' pub. A bit remote, but ideal for walkers and a book detailing the various routes was available to borrow. We stayed on a Sunday so booked a very late (excellent) Sunday lunch as no evening service on a Sunday. Staff were amazing and exceptionally pleasant and accommodating. Would definitely recommend.

I’ve been wanting to visit for a while and it was totally worth it. The pub came highly recommended and fully lived up to that. The food was brilliant, they catered easily for dietary needs and the veggie and vegan options were delicious. Portion sizes are all good and would fully recommend the Sunday roasts. Family lunch great food service and ambience

Great value Wednesday lunch. Really nice venison pasty and the same can be said of my wife's apple and pork burger.

We were greeted by friendly and happy members of staff as soon as we walked in! Checking in was quick and easy and we were taken up to our lovely room. We were given complimentary bits in our room like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and some cold drinks as well as some very tasty biscotti! The room was charming and cosy but perfectly sized for me and my partner and our dog! Super dog friendly place as well, they were so accommodating for our very excitable doggy. The food was absolutely incredible, we both had burgers and they were one of the tastiest burgers I’ve ever eaten! Props to the chef!! Breakfast was just the same, extremely delicious as well. Overall we had a lovely stay and would definitely recommend and return again.

Stayed in a few of the rooms here. A mini bar with a selection of beverages and snacks are available in the rooms. Located a short drive away from Malmesbury this is the perfect location.

We came here for something to eat and to look into booking the place for a family gathering. The bar was very busy but the restaurant wasn't too bad. We sat down for at least half an hour before anyone gave us a menu, then waited ages before we were asked for our order. By this time we were pretty fed up so decided to go elsewhere. We also decided to book another venue for our gathering where the service was brilliant.

The food was delicious and beautifully presented. We both had the burger and were pleased that this wasn't cremated as is often the case. Service was on the slow side.

As vegans, we were massively impressed with the selection available to us tonight! I had the winter vegetable stew and my wife had the aubergine milanesa- both dishes were absolutely spot on! There was lots of choice and the food was served quickly and by team members who were friendly and efficient. Will definitely return soon - top pub! Thank you!

We went for a family birthday celebration, and ate very well. The food was excellent, well cooked and presented, and enjoyed by all ages from 4 to 93. Nice selection of wines and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Staff were very welcoming, the ambience was lovely, and we all had a great time.

Lovely tranquil pub in the village of Charlton. Nice management and great character! Old school - style and nice old beams holding the roof up. Had drinks but will probably eat there in the future. Update: Food is excellent!

We were warmly welcomed by the friendly manager and had a enjoyable drink in the bar area of this traditional English pub (it would have been nice if the fire was lit but that’s a minor point). Dinner was excellent, really tasty and well presented. I highly recommend the Biscoff donuts! My first impression of my room (‘Queen’ on the top floor) was that is was very cosy and warm with lots of nice details including a mini bar with fresh milk for a morning cuppa. On closer inspection it’s a little tired and could do with a refresh. There is only a handheld shower over the bath, I would have preferred a proper shower as I’m sure most people do these days. The bed was clean, comfortable and the tv worked well. Unfortunately there was a persistent drip in the bathroom (somewhere inaccessible) that made it very difficult to sleep so I was exhausted in the morning. We had high hopes for breakfast after dinner but the menu was disappointing and food very bland indeed. Sadly, not quite the experience we were hoping for so reluctantly unable to give more than 3 stars.

I have been housebound for 5 years due to chronic anxiety and have slowly been venturing out into the big bad world again. On our 1st visit here in December I instantly felt at home with a warm welcome from staff and locals in a lovely cosy atmosphere. I was sad to hear that the landlady had been in a nasty car accident that day, despite this the team held the fort brilliantly, the food was excellent and service awesome. We went back today for my birthday lunch, again we had the same warm welcome and amazing food and service. We were also pleased to meet the lovely Kez the landlady who had happily recovered. Thank you for a lovely birthday. We will be back very soon.

We always come to this pub for Christmas Eve dinner and have never had a bad experience. The staff are accommodating, friendly and extremely friendly. The menu has something for everyone (I often struggle as have specific food requirements) and the food is always delicious. We had a table of 8 on Christmas Eve and had a brilliant experience. Would highly recommend as a friendly, country pub with an inclusive menu and tasty food

My mother and myself visited The Horse and Groom three nights in a row because we had visitors we had truly wonderful service, wonderful land lady and all staff and they have returned The Horse and Groom to the great pub as it was many years ago, always a welcoming smile and it's good to see the locals and customers happy again Jason

Had a party here in November,The staff and the landlady Kes were very welcoming and cheerful. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was great and done exactly as I asked for. The room had a lovely atmosphere where everyone felt relaxed and comfortable . I would definitely recommend this place if you need somewhere to hold a venue

Haven’t stayed there, just eaten there but won’t do it again and can’t recommend it to anyone. Food undercooked and some items not on the plate so had to ask for them. Terrible Christmas lunch, really poor value for money

My wife and daughter had a very nice Sunday lunch after a giving it a miss for a few years. We were frequent visitors until a TV chef took it over and removed all the comfy seats from the bar - replacing them with bumb numbing metal chairs. Anyway things are now back to normal and the food is as good as ever. Staff are a cheery bunch which is always a good sign! We look forward to more visits.

Where to start! Booked lunch to celebrate daughters 24th birthday, table of 8. Arrived to be seated and told to bare with them as they were short staffed. Then the waitress listed all the items that weren’t on the menu, as this was only at 1.30 alarm bells started to ring how so much food wasn’t available at this time. Took ages to take the drinks order, eventually arrived and the Prosecco was flat. That was the best part, couldn’t believe it could get worse! When food order was taken we were then told that there was no chicken either. Waitress didn’t come to table again. Went to bar to get more drinks and chase food, it arrived after 1.5 hours, the roast dinners were inedible! Meat was so tough you couldn’t cut it, potatoes undercooked and kale almost raw! We were then told that manager was in a crash in the morning, not sure what this had to do with appalling service and lack of food available. Then told head chef had walked out a week before! What was supposed to be a celebration lunch turned into complete disaster. Felt sorry for the front staff who were run ragged and kept apologising for the situation. Danielle, Summer and Euan, you did an excellent job and although we weren’t charged in the end, sadly it was a birthday meal ruined.

We had a one night stay here and enjoyed the evening meal in the restaurant. Nice ambience and good food. The bottle of NZ sav blc whilst very nice was very expensive at over £30. The breakfast the following morning was excellent and freshly cooked to order - would liked to have seen some yoghurt, if only in small cartons but that is a minor point. The service at both meals, from Kes the general manager was brilliant - friendly and nothing was too much trouble - a real star.

Kes and her team did a fantastic job of hosting a family reunion at the weekend, with 4 of us staying overnight. Dinner - delicious, varied and service that cannot be faulted. A cracking 'country pub' atmosphere. Bed - comfortable bed, great facilities (cafetiere with ground coffee, fresh milk in mini fridge, complimentary drinks), large bathroom Breakfast - Thoroughly enjoyed poached eggs + avocado on toast with pastries and juice. A clear first choice whenever we're visiting family in the future!

We had overnight accommodation over Thursday evening which included Breakfast and paid £147 (not in the low price bracket). We dined in the Restaurant on Thursday evening which was good! But the following morning Breakfast was a bit of a disaster: No orange juice or cereal was on offer and was not an option. We waited about 45 minutes to receive our order as only ONE person was in the kitchen and had to serve as well !!! Simply not good enough, neither was the poor content of what they called Continental Breakfast.

My favourite pub! The staff are so lovely, the locals make everyone feel welcome, dogs are welcome, the food is fantastic, and they have a wide range of drinks - including cocktails! We’ve stayed over and the rooms are gorgeous. Breakfast is superb. Can’t recommend this place enough. If you’re traveling, cycling, or nearby, do drop in.

Love this place, The new landlady Kes goes out of her way to make this a community hub. She puts on events from the Kings Corination to bingo, quiz nights and live music and i can’t wait for the Halloween party. Staff are great and always welcoming, really enjoyed the Sunday lunch I had that last week and other meals that I’ve had in the past have always been spot on and my children love coming along as it has such a friendly atmosphere, and they welcome dogs too which is great. Looking forward to bank holiday weekend with a tractor run and tug of war. Keep up the good work Kes and Team it’s a pleasure coming in.

We were out for a Sunday drive and came across The Horse and Groom in Charlton, what a lovely place, full of character, thought we would just have a drink but the food smelled so good we decided to have a roast but it was fully booked, Kes (landlady) and team managed to fit us in and we weren't disappointed it was delicious, the staff were so friendly and really went out of their way to make us feel at home. We,re going back there soon, We would certainly give Kes and her team 5 stars for their friendliness and happy nature making for a great atmosphere. From Barry and Pat.

Went here for my 62nd today. The food and service were amazing. Will definitely be back. I had the lamb and my family had the fish and chips. It was so good.

Great location for the Forest Live concerts at Westonbirt Aboretum, and for Tetbury and Marlborough. Very friendly and helpful staff - every single one. Lovely rooms - well decorated, well-equipped. Excellent food served. Plentiful parking. Can completely recommend.

We have just returned from a two night stay at The Horse & Groom. What a lovely stay we had. Kes and her team were so welcoming, nothing was too much trouble, their customer care is excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed the two evening meals and breakfasts we had. Our little dog was treated as royalty and even had her own sausage for breakfast. Our room was spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. I would highly recommend this hotel as a base for anyone who wants to visit Westonbirt Arboretum, Burton on Water, Stow and the Wold, we will definitely be returning.

We stayed in the hotel and ate breakfast and dinner there for 2 nights. The food was excellent and for dinner don’t miss the scotch eggs! And the gnocchi, and fish & chips! Kes and her team are amazing. Go and enjoy! And please say hi for us!

I stopped in and had Sunday lunch today with my wife and toddler. Servers were warm and welcoming and very accommodating for my toddlers needs (highchair and great positioning to have good space) We had a beef and chicken roast today and they were truly 10/10. Two very clean plates at the end, will be coming back. Can't recommend enough.

We have wanted to visit this gastro pub for sometime, having read amazing things about it in the press. A nearby birthday party gave us the reason. We went on a lovely Saturday evening and there were lots of customers outside enjoying the weather. We were greeted by the landlady as we arrived. The pub looks fantastic from the outside and the interior is well designed. The staff are friendly and engaging. The food was the highlight of the visit. I had the gnocchi dish and my wife had the haddock from the days specials. Both meals looked great on the plate, were well cooked and enjoyed. Definitely worth a revisit soon. Another excellent Butcombe pub.
