I've been going to the Big River Bakery for a long time and I can thoroughly recommend their stottie cakes (sorry Greggs - must do better). When you buy stotties in good old fashioned style when they are warm the staff ask if you want them in individual brown bags as it keeps them fresher when hot. The shop is nearly always busy and the staff are always cheerful and helpful. The community support offered by the Bakery is second to none and every purchase made helps but the prices remain very reasonable. Stotties can be frozen easily and defrost well. My next challenge is to try to get a chilli cheese baguette but they fly off the shelves faster than that overpriced drink beginning with a P did 12 months ago. A HUGE WELL DONE to everyone at Big River Bakery - you deserve it.

Have read about this place and decided we had to go and try it out. We arrived and when we saw the Stotties our eyes nearly popped out as they looked just what we could remember them being like when we were kids. They also had a wonderful black olive bread which turned out to be the best black olive bread ever. The people who worked there were so cheery and helpful. We bought some Stotties for our friends and when we took them round they were still warm. Soon after they started texting us how amazing they were. Brilliant quality and great ambassadors for helping the community.

We do at least a 40 mile round trip so bulk buy and freeze. When we defrost bread it's as delicious as it is when fresh. Excellent produce and lovely staff. Prices are very good.

Went in for stottie sandwiches for lunch, came out with 2 bags of delicious goodies, then went back later and bought more

Great bakery. Amazing stotties, corned beef pies, proper sausage rolls.... scones. I could go on. Reasonably priced. This place does loads for the community, go along and give your support

Super stotties and pies & pasties are yummy,bit hard to find as in a housing estate but well worth the trouble,staff were great,we were visiting the coast and had heard so many good reports we had to go,we were not dissapointed 👌🍽😜

Went there today to buy sourdough, came out with stottie as well and a couple of sandwichs plus a free loaf and a bag of flour very friendly place, lush bread.

Love stottie cake found this bakery by accident I went in and seen they do traditional Geordie stottie cake and it’s lush it’s better than a well known national bakery chain which started in Gosforth Newcastle. Staff very friendly give them a try you will not be disappointed.

This bakery is amazing, supporting the community, friendly staff all whilst producing amazing bakes from bread to pasties to ham & peas pudding stotties to flapjacks and a lot more. Their prices are more than reasonable & you will not be disappointed, it is all delicious. I will tell you one thing not alot of people know as I myself did not know how committed they are into helping others less fortunate than themselves. I'm super proud to say I think they are all amazing. This place should be gifted some award.. Brilliant little space. Can't wait for my next visit..Definitely going to take a ham & peas pudding scottie!! 😋 COME ON PEOPLE give it a whirl...

What what a lovely welcome ,friendly service .Very helpful staff who worked great as a team .Erin and Hannah absolute stars nothing was to much bother .Stayed and had a coffee and bacon and sausage sarnie was lovely . Love the bakery breads ...First class service from the girls thankyou so much .

Visited for a late breakfast of ham and pease pudding stotties-really lovely very ,filling and very tasty. Bought a large sourdough loaf to take away and two still hot stotties, Superb bread! Very helpful friendly staff, we will visit again,

I came across Big River on social media, gave it a try and have been back lots of times since and will be going lots more). The freshest bread imaginable, baked daily on the premises, irresistible pastries and sweet treats, lovely coffee. It's worth the effort of seeking it out, the team there are all wonderful, and you can come out feeling a little bit better about yourself for supporting a social enterprise doing some good for society, rather than a bland supermarket. Definitely give them a try if you can. Oh, and the prices are incredible value for money.

Being a Geordie by birth and having loved the Hairy Bikers trip to the North East which featured the bakery, it was a must for us to visit (husband came too) when next in the area. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and we enjoyed a nice hot coffee there before leaving with a bag of goodies including their renowned ham and pease pudding Stotties and scones which were delicious. Can’t wait to visit again to try more of the lovely range on offer at such reasonable cost.

I don't normally review bakeries but this place is just amazing. Located in the middle of a housing estate (10 minutes fom the city centre) it offers the most amazing fresh bread, sandwiches and cakes at just silly prices. The ham and pease pudding stottie is particularly good and made a great lunch with some of the chocolate and guinness cake. Unmissable!

Have bought bread from stalls and other outlets before sounds how good the bread was but yesterday was my first visit to the bakery. I was delighted to find vegan options available, I ordered the falafel with cranberry and stuffing whilst friend had the hummus stottie and we both agreed they were delicious. The staff were super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about products. Will definitely be back. Would highly recommend a visit.

What a gem of a bakery! Their stotties are the best ever. We also tried the mince pies which were delicious and the chicken, cranberry and stuffing sandwich was gorgeous. These were all freshly made and baked on the premises and the staff are friendly...

Ordered online Stottie Making Kit as present for an absent Geordie. Big, big disappointment. Minimal ingredients, minimal quantity, worst possible value for money. The reality is far removed from the hype - quite sad. Find a recipie and buy your own ingredients

Heard about this place via The Hairy Bikers Show recently so decided to try it out - First impressions are that of pleasant, friendly and knowledgeable staff and a lovely aroma of baking bread - We bought various breads and each loaf was freshly baked...

We celebrated our win with super massive crispy sausage rolls, moist chicken and mushroom pies and corned beef/potato pasties. Magnificent......all went. We'll be back at Novos' RFC on the 31st, hope he remembers to pick the order up! Thanks to The Big River.
