Shame to see the downgrading of Plymouths premier luxury hotel. Clean, some good staff but nothing like it used to be. This was Plymouths aspirational hotel but you are better off now staying in the converted Co-op building in town.

I secured a really good bed and breakfast deal for a two night stay, my first ever at the Duke of Cornwall. Had a much larger than average room and bathroom. Good powerful shower and very comfortable double bed. All was immaculately clean. Was really impressed with the value for money. Really good breakfast options too and delivered with a friendly service. Nice to stay somewhere with such character and history to it and which doesn't have that bland corporate air about it. Good cosy bar area too. Will definitely stay here again when back in Plymouth.

A Night to Remember at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel’s Ballroom On the 24th of February, the Plymouth Romanian Organisation had the immense pleasure of hosting our vibrant celebration, Noaptea Dragobetelui, at the prestigious Duke of Cornwall Hotel’s Ballroom. It was an unforgettable night not only for us, the organizers, but also for our esteemed guests who enjoyed delicious meals, had a fantastic time, and danced the night away. The venue proved to be the perfect setting for such an event, blending elegance with a welcoming atmosphere that set the stage for a truly memorable evening. From the moment we began planning, the cooperation and support we received from the hotel were unparalleled. Melanie, the venue manager, was exceptionally accommodating, ensuring all our needs were met with grace and professionalism. Her assistance in organizing the menu and adapting to our specific requirements contributed significantly to the evening’s success. The Ballroom itself exudes a charm and sophistication that complemented our event’s spirit, providing a backdrop that was both visually stunning and incredibly inviting. Its spacious layout allowed our guests to comfortably enjoy the festivities, from the dining experience to the joyous dancing that filled the room with energy and laughter. We are confident that this will not be the last time we choose the Duke of Cornwall Hotel’s Ballroom for our events. It’s a venue that we wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking to create an event filled with elegance, joy, and unforgettable moments. A huge thank you to Melanie and her team for their outstanding service. We look forward to many more collaborations in the future.

The place looks better after the refurb. Unfortunately the service at the bars was lacking any customer service skills. Very moody and no smile the whole night from the bar staff. Limited choice of alcohol. It has a lot of potential given the location but a new vibe needs to be inserted in the place. Improvement needs to be done in the period features of the building so that they align with a good customer satisfaction

Stayed here a few times for work. The staff have always been very friendly and helpful. The hotel is an interesting historical building which adds some character to the rooms. Each room I stayed in was slightly different, unlike a typical chain hotel. You can choose from a cooked breakfast menu and also help yourself to some drinks/cereals etc. I had fried bread, beans, mushrooms tomatoes & toast. Parking can be extremely limited if you arrive after 5pm and a few times I have parked in the theatre car park (5minutes walk away) or on the road outside. Approximately £3 overnight (only until 8am!) with RingGO for road parking or much more at the theatre (typically about £8-10 per night).

On the face of this lovely hotel it looked impressive, How wrong we where, it is very dated an tied through out the building, bedrooms and bathrooms in desperately need of modernisation and restoration, carpets that have seen better days an have a peculiar smell. On a positive note the staff are friendly and helpful, we did eat here in the large dinner room in the evenings, we have never been so uncomfortable eating in there it was so ridiculously cold and the radiator's where very hot and not keeping the room to a amibient temperature So we never felt comfortable, our food never stayed that warm from being served to us an put on a stone marble table with no white table cloth . I couldn't honestly recommend the hotel only from our experience. But what is happening to all our hotels is the decline an the lack of investment . It's only a matter of time before this lovely hotel is closed for good.

date of stay - Nov 10th to 12th 2021 1. Bath tap handle fell off - covid disinfectant sheets that were signed saying the taps had been cleaned and checked were..inaccurate. if they had been checked the handle wouldn't have fallen off. 2. Iron safety sticker is a year out of date. Iron base plate has something icky melted on it. There is no top to stop water coming out the top of the Iron. 3. Sheets not changed daily. 4. Inside draws and wardrobe were dirty and dusty. 5. Inside certain draws there were burn marks and gaps that allowed items to fall out. 6. Tvs only had certain channels. No BBC channels, no sat free view free channels. 7. WiFi was insecure. 8. Chair in bedroom had weird stains on the seat. 9. Door in living room didn't seem to lock. I had to place a chair and furniture behind it to make sure I had no night time visitors. 10. On checkout the receptionist couldn't be bothered to ask me if I'd had a nice time in Plymouth, had my stay been ok. She took my Door card, logged me as checked out and turned back to her desk and playing with her mobile phone. 11. Supposedly they do room service but I couldn't find a menu for food or drinks to order from. 12. No offer of a complimentary drink let alone any recompense. Not impressed. 13. Found a pubic hair under the sealed plastic covered plastic drinking glass on the morning of my leaving. I would have told the receptionist has she been at all interested in my stay. I've spent time in various countries and stayed in many hotels and the odd motel, but for the price these charge, I'd have been better sleeping under a tarp thrown over my motorcycle, or digging a hole popping up a tarp and sleeping in that. Paperwork saying the taps have been cleaned but the part of a tap falls off...... spidersense is tingling...

Well what can i say but a total disappointment on all levels, room staff menu food etc etc.I booked this hotel back in May for our stay in September for 1 week (4th -11th) i called the Hotel 3 days prior 1st sept to check and confirm all was ok and was assured that all was ok for our visit. We were staying on a full board basis and also hoped to celebrated my partners birthday on the saturday eve of he 4th with their fine dining restaurant experience.........well we walked into chaos on arrival. We arrived in the afternoon around 3pm checked in all went ok,we were asked to pay upfront the £936 for our week stay in what was supposed to be a Superior Room, well let me state if this was a superior god help us if were in there basic double.I asked to speak with David Laine and tried for him to arrange a surprise at dinner for my partners birthday to which he replied i will arrange. We were not 100% happy with the room but thought hey lets make do and get on with our weeks stay. Whilst in the lift we noticed a menu which we thought was a bar menu consisting of Pizza chicken sandwiches scampi etc etc.To our horror we found out by going onto online reviews the week before that this was the so called dining experience. We headed straight down to reception to confront this situation. We were told that this was on there website so we asked her to show us this info, but she just could'nt because it was not there as we already had the website up on our phone, but all she kept repeating was,its on the website. I ask to see a manager to which a sour faced grim guy approached looking like he did not want to get involved, and then he told us that they did not have a Chef and they have not had one for many months, and informed us that we should of been informed of this prior to booking.Well obviously we have never been informed,i even ask why did they not inform me when i called the hotel 3 days prior to check if all was ok,he had no answer at all.Even the chap David Laine could of told me that they had no chef when i ask him to do a surprise at dinner for my partners birthday,he chose not too.The entire staff just blagged and lied throughout the whole process. With this we decided we wanted our money back and move on but was told that they cannot refund till the following morning plus that they would charge us for 1 night stay because it had gone past the cancellation time.Well further unpleasantries exchanged. We ended up staying as everywhere was booked up,we spent most of the evening trying to find somewhere but in the end we had to move to Torbay,as nowhere was available inte area.My main grief is the fact that the entire staff lied lied and lied,if they had of told us the truth prior to taking our money we probably would of stayed and try to make the best of a bad situation, instead all our plans were upheaval. As for the room if this was a superior room then again i feel we have been mislead on this too,its a shame because the building is a very grand building but extremely tired, your actually lead into false surroundings on arrival, when you enter the reception area, dining room etc all on lower ground you think wow, when ya get to the room,OMG.We stayed at a B&B on the friday eve prior and this was better equipped than the Hotel room.Everything was tired and dated, they never even supplied a spoon of all things for making tea,no chest of drawers for clothes just awful for a so called superior room.Even on checkout the following morning nothing was said by the staff no apologies what so ever.We found out by locals on the day that we were leaving that the Hotel actually went bust last year, obviously its been taken over by who ever, we looked further into the Hotel history and the reviews as far back as 2017 were just as bad then.

The hotel was old charm and class. The staff were so lovely and helpful. We had a slight problem with old rattling windows on the top floor that the hotel should have prepared us for that could have been solved before the problem started however, the night manager was a pure gem and sorted our issue immediately even after I was short with him. So I can't hold that against the hotel as our stay was so nice. I just recommend that they are up front about window issues as the hotel is old but a paper wedge will do the trick! Don't let that put you off the hotel is quite lovely 👌Food was very nice and beds were comfortable.

Awful experience. I’ll never try this “hotel” again. It looks pretty on the website photos but you get a deeply subpar experience for the price they’re asking. The room wasn’t cheap and the hotel was almost empty - and yet we got a room with a view on the back alley maintenance side or whatever that was (definitely wasn’t pretty - nor really made us feel safe when we checked in late at night.). Huge disappointment. The window only opened a smidgen and there was no ac or fans so the room was very stuffy. The toilet didn’t flush (or it did - after trying at least 8 times.) The lady taking our breakfast order literally rolled her eyes when my friend asked about gluten free options (she’s allergic and we did inform/ask the hotel in advance). The staff member doing our check in looked incompetent and made us feel not really welcomed. The lift apparently doesn’t work since forever. On a good point - shower was nice, staff doing our check out was nice and competent for a change. Not sure the point is to make a customer feel “taken care of” only when they’re leaving… Overall a very underwhelming experience. I’ll not recommend to anyone…

Nice hotel, very comfortable. Really helpful staff and good breakfast to start the day. £5 for car parking was a surprise as alot of hotels I've stayed in offer free parking, but £5 to park over night is not to bad, just make sure you pop your reg number on the screen at reception. Will stay again when in the area.

FINALLY re-opened after being closed down and now with new owners. This was the FIRST luxury hotel in the 1860's with it's own train station!!!! Accomodation comfortable and , to some extent renovated. The new owners have already promised to renovatie the original outside and also inside where needed. Great place to stay long or short breaks.....oh and bring your hound, they are more than welcome hier. My advice if your taking a break you should think of Plymouth by the sea and stay in a 'old' world modern hotel. Eventueel also accomodatie, famed for the best wedding you can buy!!!!

A proper old school pub. Lovely bar staff, little kitchen doing steak and pub meals 😋 Real ales and ciders, reasonably priced, well cared for and dog friendly. Nearby Devonport Park ideal 👌
