Bertie's Ice Cream & Home Made Desserts in Plymouth

As my partner and I were in Plymouth we decided to have an ice cream so we stopped here what can I say this place is amazing the young man at Gertie's was funny and very helpful and knowledgeable I can't praise the shop any more loved everything if we are down this way again we will definitely pop in again

One of the best ice creams in Plymouth. Delicious homemade ice cream with loads of choice. Great value. Would highly recommend.

Delicious burgers, chips and ice cream. We even saw them making the ice cream and toppings on the premises. There is even a small indoor seating area to shelter from the rainy days! Great place, great setting, amazing homemade ice cream

We go to Bertie’s all the time and the owner has always been so friendly and the ice-cream is just amazing. Some of the best desserts in Plymouth with great service too!

This little slice of ice cream heaven is tucked away in the corner of the wharf. The variety is excellent & the homemade biscuits (cookies sorry I'm not American) for the icecream sandwich are just yummy. The Man who runs this & next doors Gerties is just nuts & such fun to chat to. He's always on the move & is the kng of multi taskng. Really is one of those small business gems

I went to Gerties and Berties this morning, and ordered a Bacon baguette and a delicious coffee and the gentle man that served me was kind, friendly and overall a great help! The food was amazing the service was even better, the one girl in the icecream shop was very friendly and made a amazing desert for my granddaughter. Good food I will definitely be coming back for my morning coffee!

On the quayside in Plymouth harbour Walk down a ramp and there are three businesses - Bertie's for ice cream, Gertie's for snacks, and a seafood place which I didn't really notice, although normally I'm all for seafood places We wanted ice cream so we sat outside. It looked to be closed until the bloke from Gertie's opened it up and served us. He then dashed back to Gertie's and served customers there. I suppose his colleague was on their break. Anyway, Bertie's thing is ice cream with bits in it. I went for apple crumble, which was vanilla ice cream with apple and cinnamon sauce and crumble. Something like that, anyway. It was delicious.

It was very busy with only two members of staff at the height of a Saturday. Very concerned regarding Health and Safety as one of the young ladies serving was licking her fingers of sugar while making the doughnuts. Would definitely not come here again.

The place to visit on a very hot day after a boat trip. The clotted cream Eton Mess was to die for. Staff were friendly and helpful with a lovely sense of humour.

A good place to wait for a boat trip. Affogato was exactly what I needed to perk me up on a hot sticky morning. First time I’ve had it made with cinnamon ice cream, delicious.

Stopped here for an ice cream and a drink, a saturday lunchtime, weather fair and plenty of tourists around, yet for some unknown reason, there was just two staff trying to manage two outlets, make the food, take orders, be a waiter, it was simply a crazy situation. A simple order of an ice cream and a can of coke could not be fulfilled and thus after a period of waiting, we moved on. I'm not blaming the two lads that worked hard, but it was an impossible situation. After months of closer and lockdown, i would have thought every outlet would be trying to maximise profit, not turn business away. With so many outlets close by, it is east to walk on past to the next. Such a shame

Cheerful young man. Leapt out to dry the seats for us and take our order. Delicious panini and salad. Fantastic value. Give it a try. You'll love it.

Was very happy with the service staff were very friendly and helpful. The food is very nice and affordable.

Popped in for a quick breakfast, my wife and I had a bacon bap each. Very nice, generous proportion, well cooked, good quality. Well priced at £3. Staff very friendly. Only minor criticism concerned my wife's cappuccino, she said it didn't really taste like one!

We visited today and had the most wonderful experience - the owner was leading by example and was an absolute pleasure to converse with! The ice cream was exceptional too! A must visit if you’re on The Hoe :)

We visited yesterday for ice-creams, having visited both Gertie's and Bertie's before. Service is great, ice-creams delicious! It's our favourite place for ice-creams and we'll definitely return!

Came across Bertie's and Gertie's nextdoor. Had fantastic panini's made how we wanted, with cheese with out cheese to what ever spec we wanted. 4 Lovely salad's all home made too. Enjoyed our lunch so much, went back for a coffee and a delicious ice-cream...

Fab service, never been before despite hearing such fab reviews so headed down finally to try it out. Well no one was disappointed, hubby loved the ice cream sandwich. What an amazing creation!!!!! Will deffo return here. 5 stars xx

First visit & won’t return. Staff wiping food from hands onto their dirty apron in between serving ice creams and drinks. Given Covid-19 I would have thought spoons should be wrapped in paper or provided with the ice cream, but instead I had to fish...

Visited last Sunday, limited number permitted in, hand sanitizer available on entry. Staff member very pleasant and hygiene aware. Delicious ice cream for a reasonable price, well worth a visit.

Just got dragged down here by the other half for a BBQ bacon onion and goats cheese panini and oh my days it's beautiful definitely have the salad too. Lovely friendly staff too. Clean place regularly wiping tables and using antibacterial thanks guys

This place is very friendly but the guy serving and his teenage helper have little comprehension on how to protect their customers from basic health issues let alone COVID-19. The place looks extremely untidy and dirty, there were many overcooked doughnuts and cookies just tossed...

Went to Gerties which is part of Bertie's and the food was excellent quality and amazing value for money I would recommend this snack bar and will be visiting again very soon

Can’t see a separate TA listing for Gertie’s but the style, font and format of the next door unit is the same as Bertie’s but in a different but complementary colour scheme. Bertie’s sells a good range of tasty good value ice creams. What must be a sister business, Gertie’s sells a sensible selection of panini and baguettes where you can assemble your own choices of fillings and salads. There’s a deal for £5 which includes a tea or other drink. There are some other savoury options too. Outside both shops are a large number of tables several with umbrella cover. The views are up to the walls of the Citadel or across the Cattewater Queen Anne’s Battery and the lock entrance to Sutton Harbour. A good spot to relax.

After a day of freezing on a fishing boat me and my son popped in for a treat. We had a lovely coffee and a just been baked cookie and an amazing pudding. The owner was very accommodating and made us feel very welcome and chatted about are fishing trip. A lovely visit

This was a a fantastic experience. We went in to grab 8 ice creams. The owner served us the most amazing ice creams, Recommending the right sauce and toppings for the flavour. All homemade, all completely delicious. It’s so rare to come across somewhere that is firstly excellent and served with passion and secondly absolutely delicious. If you go to Plymouth, go to Bertie’s for your ice cream!

Love it here! Been coming since Bertie’s was an ice cream van near west hoe park, was pleased to hear it was opening a small unit at the commercial wharf, and now Gerties too, fantastic. Nothings too much trouble, I just got a panini and a coffee this morning and everything was prepared freshly in front of me. The desserts are amazing, look forward to coming down in the summer holidays with my children. My son can be picky but the man kindly let him sample a piece of biscuit so he could make up his mind. Not many places offer that, it’s simply a take or leave it option!

Visited for the 1st time and thought the whole area inside the ice cream part looked untidy and mucky. Young girl serving sneezed and didnt wash her hands yukkk. She also needs to address each person as to what they want because she was asking me and hubby got exactly the same as in flavoured ice cream. Her attitude also was not welcoming

Good all round service and value for money but a little concerned about the cleanliness/hygiene. Noticed food was handled with no gloves or tongs and handling of money and then food.

This place is excellent value compared to to the overpriced ice cream vans in the area. Nice service and great quality ice cream. Don't do to the ice cream vans, go here instead.

This is a fab place to grab a special ice cream and certainly not your normal run of the mill soft option. Or if you want a quick snack and coffee then give the big guys a miss and try out Bertie's, you will be surprised at how good it is, amazing value !

Came here for dessert after a meal at the boathouse cafe. Really tasty, good value desserts. Owner was very friendly. Will return!

So we come here lots normally and it's amazing service but at half 7 in the evening, service with a smile and a good hot drink and homemade cookie is even better. Perfect every time and good location and price!

Always a cheeky welcome at Berties. An amazing choice of ice creams at a fraction of the price of the other options on The Hoe and on The Barbican. The kids always have fun choosing from the enticing array of flavours with a free flake thrown on so you don’t feel like the killjoy adult having to say no to yet more money being spent. A fabulous location tucked away so well worth going out of your way to find it for what won’t be your first and last visit.

Fantastic value! Lovely ice cream. We weren’t expecting too much from the coffee at £1.50 a cup but it was really good. We found Bertie’s by accident, but after such memorable service from the owner, who has a lovely personality, we will definitely be seeking it out next time we are in the area!

If you are tempted to walk into one of the fish and chip shops along the front at Plymouth take a couple more minutes to walk along the front till you are at the ramp that leads up to the main road. Tucked away there you will find Berties. Wow what deals and what great food served by one of the most pleasant people I have ever met. Just amazing deals. May not be a gourmet restaurant but his bacon butties and hot chocolate are to die for.

Found this place after recommendation from boat trip. It was simply great. A great range of ice-cream satisfying a group covering eight decades, good portions, low price, home-made. A treasure.

Stopped here on way back across the Hoe walk. Bought a coffee (latte) and bacon roll ( a tiger baguette) £3.50 really great value. I've cream were £1.50 with a free flake. The coffees were freely made with their small coffee machines. Bacon rolls took about 10 minutes. Well worth the wait. I would recommend it.

Not a huge place, but full of delicious ice cream - have cream tea, coffee an assortment of flavoured ice cream with a flake and topped with clotted cream - delicious and reasonably priced, take a seat and look out at the lovely scene before you, boats coming and going from the harbour, play a game of table tennis, this is such a lovely relaxing place a hidden gem that is worth a visit.

Hidden gem, look out for signs directing you down to the marina. Outside seating with umbrellas. Great choice of delicious ice creams and lollies. Choice of cones or reusable tub. Free flake and toppings. Friendly service and great prices. Will definitely be back.

This is no ordinary ice-cream shop! Amazing choice of delicious ice-cream and accompanying cakes and toppings etc. Don’t think about the calories! It’s a real treat. The staff are as friendly as can be. If anything their products are underpriced. If you haven’t been here yet then go experience it for yourself. Definitely worth a trip.

My son and I stumbled upon Bertie's after a wander around the Barbican last Saturday. We were welcomed by Phil like we were old friends. He was hugely knowledgeable, gave great advice and served up some of the best ice cream puddings we've ever tasted. A true feast for the eyes as well as the belly! My 9yo announced that this was the BEST ice cream he had ever eaten. They were a work of art! If you haven't tried a Bertie's ice cream pudding, add it to your bucket list!!!!

This is the second time we have visited Berties and we've had exceptional service on both occasions. The ice cream is locally made and all the accompaniments are homemade by the owner. Today I had a salted cookie dessert which consisted of vanilla ice cream, white chocolate sauce, homemade cookies, whole raspberries and a raspberry sauce, clotted cream and a flake! Absolutely delicious and only £3! The owner is passionate about his products and is happy to make up an icecream dessert to include whatever flavours you like. There is seating outside and I highly recommend a visit.

There is a great variety of ice creams here along with some that you can have as a dessert tub. I had the summer berry crumble with clotted cream, my husband had fudge & chocolate brownie with his. I believe all the fudge, cookies & brownies used are home made. The summer berry syrup was beautiful, not too sweet, not too tart.

Myself and my family have been here a few times now, the ice cream is lovely and fairly priced. Service is always brilliant. this is definitely our favourite place to get ice cream and we will go out of our way to go here instead of elsewhere, will be reccomending to our friends and family!

We have been visiting this icecream shop for a while now. It’s become our favourite go-to place for ice-creams; we don’t go anywhere else nowadays!!

The ice creams were awesome. The tea and coffees are good and a great price. Where else can you get a cup of tea and a the cookie for only £1.50!!!! The place is right by the ferry jetties in the Barbican area so on the tourist route to the Hoe.

We bought four lovely ice-creams from here on Saturday - excellent!. On Sunday we bought 2 cups of tea, 2 cappuccino's and 4 delicious home made cookies - all for only £7. What a bargain!

Visited Bertie’s today to have a Devon cream tea with my family as a treat at the end of our holiday to Plymouth. The food was inexpensive but very tasty, especially the homemade scones (which had just come out of the oven when we ate them!) The man working at the cafe was very friendly, even offering to take a photo for us. Highly recommend!

Very friendly owner. Good sized portions. Great value. Selection of drinks available plus ice cream. Tea you can take out or drink outside in a mug. Tables and chairs outside. Cheaper than the cafe up the road. Great view of the harbour.

It’s great to see Bertie’s Ice Cream Parlour open it means spring is upon us. Our grandchildren love visiting for their ice creams with flake, sauce and sprinkles always a generous helping and excellent value. Phil the owner is alway cheerful and makes a fuss of all of his customers. Well worth a visit at any time

Great view of the ferry pickup, the entrance to Sutton Harbour, QAB and across the Cattewater to Mount Batten. A small arched front with a cafe/shop occupying an disused boat store and now operated as ice cream etc deserts and a selection of fillings, toppings etc not lease fruit crumble. Outside seats, umbrellas etc. Quite a sun trap. Run by a very friendly guy, a former chef who ran or still also runs a popular ice cream van on the Hoe or waterfront.
