Benson's Hotel & Restaurant in Denbighshire

Dreadful, horrendous, awful place. I have been to the men's toilets in India and....they were exactly the same. These toilets are a disgrace and are obviously NEVER cleaned Beware!

Popped in here as moored at the Marina. What a dirty place. Clearly no vacuum has been near the place. Everything is run down. The toilets were worse than public toilets in Naples and that is saying something. I have never experienced such a dishevelled establishment with rude uncaring staff. I wouldn't eat anything here based on their inability to clean anything.

This place could be so good. The inside is full of memorabilia which I really liked. The beer was decent too. It ends there though. The staff were arguing among each other. Here’s where this place really fails….. The toilets are disgusting and looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in ages. Wet toilet paper on the floor, in the sink and urinal and no lock on the toilet door. Generally grubby and they really need a refurbishment. They have to be the worst toilets I’ve ever been to in a pub and that’s a real shame.

If I could give zero stars I would, the owner is very rude. 12 year old son was sat watching the football game and owner decides to come over and tell him move I own this place, we had been in there 20 minutes and had just bought a round of drinks which was very expensive might I add. Was warned when walking out the owner is a pervert and likes to watch young girls which was very disturbing as my 19 year old daughter was wearing very small shorts (he is 80 years old) I would highly recommend staying away from this place.

As someone who works in the health and safety industry I was disappointed to see that the step leading up to the view of the river was carpeted in the same carpet as the lower level. This is a huge trip hazard and two of my friends actually tripped up themselves. This should be highlighted for customers. Especially that day was more of the older generation present.

Toilet’s like a third world country, bar staff arguing, good for sport on telly but that’s where it stops

A member of staff clearly stated she was off work at 17:00 but was still behind the bar at 23:00 and was highly intoxicated falling and shouting around the bar. She came over to our group shouting and balling claiming one of us called her a “slag” we were all in disbelief as to where this was coming from, this then leads to more disruption with her daughter who was also a member of staff then coming over to confront us with her hand down her trousers! All we wanted was a quiet few drinks with some friends watching some boxing but the staff had other ideas. I would avoid this place like the plague. Unless you want to be accused of verbally abusing the staff

Very rude staff and anti-welsh.. in Wales. Unfortunately, this made a day trip to Llangollen very unpleasant, luckily other pubs and places around the town made up for it!

Went in as thought we would get a drink and view of river disappointed on both the beer was terrible we did not drink it and you could not get outside to river view as the place is falling apart there was a lack of atmosphere would not recommend

Went to try and see the match between Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland Staff were lovely but they had the jukebox blearing out. Only customers in there wanted to view match. I asked if they would put the match commentey on which they did but the music continued to blare out. I noticed people walking past seeing the match was on but repelled by the music & walking on . Terribly disappointed because Bensons is my go to place when visiting Llangollen.

We popped in here for a drink during Eisteddfod weekend. While it’s a great sports bar, with some quirky/unusual items hanging from the ceiling, we thought it looked in need of a good clean. My partner went to the men’s toilets and said it was filthy in there. I did not want to try the ladies!

Bensons could be an amazing bar, the frontage makes it look like a shop inside is huge with lots of TV's around including a huge one in the main section, it also has a room at the back overlooking the river Dee. The potential is huge as a bar but sadly is more like a bric a brac shop with a bar, staff are very friendly and helpful. All in all if you want to watch some sport (especially six nations rugby) with a few pints its great but that's it really oh and if i were you keep away from the toilets as they are frankly disgusting!!

Called in with the dogs to watch Manchester v Arsenal. Loads of TVs & great range of ales. I'm on shandy to keep my powder dry for Liverpool's game at 5.30. Dog friendly and I'm surprised more people not in. A very welcoming & chilled vibe Well worth a visit

I have drank here and it always reminds me of something that's never been finished. Plenty to look at but not a place to spend the night at

Issues: 1. Buckets on floor in my room when I entered. 2. Manky towels left in bath 3. No electrics plugged in 4. Key to room did not work 5. Therefore locked in and out of room at various stages. 6, no personal details taken at check in On being moved to another room after I complained about being put in a room above the bar: 7. New room was above the bar. 8. Bathroom light did not work 9. Various bits of electrical kit left lying about. The whole place was a mess. There was a strong chance of something going badly wrong - possibly injury or worse. I strongly urge possible customers to avoid this place.

Ironically we thought we were quite lucky as we'd just got in before the food service stopped at 8pm on a Saturday evening. Whilst my hunter's chicken was so-so it was my wife's steak pie that will live long in the memory for all the wrong reasons. This so-called pie came with a base that was essentially made by slicing a puff pastry top in half but far worse than all that was the blue mold found on the pastry. A perfunctory apology was given and we left with a bad taste in the mouth, literally and figuratively. And it was Llangollen food festival weekend.

We loved this place. The pub is completely full of antiques... they're absolutely everywhere and it kept us busy for a while. The staff were very friendly, ales and wine were great and the location ideal.

Popped in here to grab a coffee. .really funky sports bar with a tremendous collection of memorabilia. Was shown 2 rooms..chose room 6..balcony overlooking the river..4 poster bed..jacuzzi bath..OK it's not the ritz but it was clean and comfortable. Jacuzzi bath set me up for relaxation..bed was super comfy..I slept really well..I left the balcony doors open and the sound of the water was so tranquil..thanks for a wonderful relaxing stay.

2 night visit room wasn’t great but adequate for what you require. must say thought the staff were excellent.

We like our football, so when in Llangollen, we visit Bensons! In our experience, it is stacked during top matches and then empties out completely. Always a good atmosphere and we have had some lovely meals here, although it doesn't really give the impression of somewhere you'd want to eat, which is a shame. The toilets are downstairs and totally let the place down - do something with those and it would really lift the place!

Definitely the place to visit to feel welcome by locals, friendly advice on local history and beauty spots , menu very basic but acceptable good price, plenty of seating area beautiful views seating outside with vi of river good beer and entertainment

Popped in for a late afternoon pint and food as there was a good menu outside. Three huge TV's punching out the same sport very loud, no food in evidence so didn't stop. Bar staff friendly. Went round town and on the way back still no food in evidence and still noisy. Real ale good.

Had a couple of drinks and a game of pool, were made to feel welcome and given some local advice for our stay.

We were intrigued by the vintage items hanging from the ceilling as we passed by outside so went in for a drink.Lots of interesting items and old toys to shake up your memory.It was midweek so quiet when we called in. It's busy at the weekend apparently.The bar has lots of large screens for the sports etc and serves food, though not when we visited.The drink prices were higher than the pub we had been to earlier.Nice place with a friendly bar person. Well worth a visit.

Frequent visitors to Llangollen, we often watch live football in Benson's. Families are welcome, and there is a pleasant atmosphere. The bar features a range of quirky antique and collectable items dotted around, which give it real character beyond the normal sports' bar. Reasonably-priced food is served throughout the day.A range of rooms is also available.

Went here for a meal ordered the pate and a lamb roast. Never seen anything like it before. At to double check it was lamb. Must of come out of a packet covered in a dodgy gravy. Never again. Worst place ever. Including hmps.

Friendly staff and locals all welcoming with our spaniel , had few meals here couldn’t fault it homemade chips are lovely curry,steamed steak pudding all good, good screens for footy if u like , go back no probs.

went here on Saturday, tv screens everywhere so no chance of missing the football, place could do with a bit of a clean though, carpet on the stairs down to the toilets is filthy, were going to eat but didnt because of it.

Went with grandkids and found it a nice place with a good atmosphere, great TV and memorabilia, the prices were good for food and drink, the girl who served us was very helpful and had patience although she was busy. Food was good.

My fiancé & I visited for drinks on a Saturday night. The bar is modern, with tv screens for sport, but also a bizarre collection of memorabilia hanging from the ceiling. This unique combination makes for a great atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

The bar area is similar to a museum crammed full of old toy cars, prams and planes hanging from the ceiling and old car and sport framed items all around the walls. The beer was nice, the footie was on and the wife was entertained looking around, so all in all it was a good experience. It's probably more geared towards the Locals than tourists so the staff are not very chatty, but were polite.

Unfortunately, I found the food not quiet to the standard that I was expecting from what I believed was a good uptown location.

Popped in here for a evening drink and were wowed by the decor which includes a vast collection of old memorabilia covering a multitude of areas, from kids toys, to old kitchen equipment and tools. Real nostalgia.

very poor food and expensive drinks the menu outside is very misleading the bar looks ok but when you go down to the toilets theree is junk every were the outside area is poor poor again on your way to it were is loads of tables and chairs pilled up looks like a junk shop my wife decided to have fish and chips we have never been served a frozon cook in the fish in a restaurant before but we have been now

Very welcome relaxing seating for a relax after a day of exploring. Lots of memorabilia hanging from the ceiling worthy of raising your head and scouring to see if you remember any them.

First class food. Plenty of choice. Food was piping hot when arrived. Service was excellent. Window tables overlooking the River Dee, also, outdoor terrace to dine or enjoy a drink. Great for photography too..

This is an average pub with friendly staff. The food was ok and reasonably priced. Apart from the huge TV's there is lots to look at with numerous memorabilia items on display everywhere.

my husband and i called in just by chance. We had an excellent meal which was very reasonably priced. Service was good. Will go back.

Beer was okay but tequila sunrise cocktail was tasteless. pub was dead on Wednesday night and food/eatting area looked sparse and uninviting

Bensons is a great value hotel, I have stayed in the four poster room many times and will be going back again with the added bonus of the terrace with amazing views

We had a meal here in August and found the food to be fine. The order wasn'r accurate and plain burger for the kid arrived with onions on. The service was ok but overall we felt it could have been more friendly and attentive. They have Sky Sports available in their bar...

Seemed to be a great place, very quirky and with lovely, different drinks choices - had a fruit cider that I'd never heard of before.Sat out the back and enjoyed the river view.

My son & I stumbled upon this bar when looking for food after 2pm. Quirky memorabilia hanging from ceiling like old bikes, signs, toys, planes etc. Comfy chesterfield sofas & large TV's to catch up with news. Food was served fairly quickly, my son had fish & chips which he enjoyed & I had chilli salmon fishcakes with salad, but I could not detect any salmon. It filled a gap & we were hungry. 2 meals & 2 drinks for just under £16.00 so not too bad.

We went here for our meals on the 2 days we stayed in Llangollen.When you enter, it is like a step back in time with all the old toys, telephones, typewriters and every manner of old fashioned items. we were amazed the first visit but on our second we saw things we had not seen on the first visit. The staff were the most friendly possible and the meals were well worth the money and not to expensive. A good selection of food and also drink. Wold go back again if we ever went back.

We liked the idea of dining with a view and the place was quite empty of diners. We ordered 2 medium sirloin steaks with salad, onion rings and chips. we had 2 glasses of Shiraz which was very pleasant. The food arrived after 20 mins. It looked a mess. The steaks were blackened. There was different sizes of what looked like frozen oven chips. The salad was minimal with some dry red onion. the like of which I would bin at home. The steaks were dry as a bone and inedible. We asked for another meal as this was unacceptable. We got no apologies. we sat and waited and waited. After 20 mins we went to the bar and paid for the drinks. I told them I could do better myself and that we were leaving. No wonder it was empty.

Located just off the main High Street but still within walking distance of the Town Centre. I enjoyed the piping hot cottage pie and my hubby devoured the mixed grill. I The lemon tart was nice and tangy. The waiter was polite. Nice view over the River Dee. The bill for the food was reasonable but I thought my large glass of wine was a bit pricey.

We live in North West Wales and were driving back from Manchester. After a tortuous journey of long traffic jams we decided to stop in Llangollen for dinner. Unfortunately I didn't have a very good phone signal so couldn't check out Tripadvisor for restaurants. Several places were closed or not serving food on a Monday evening, so we ended up in Bensons. The outside information advertised that they served seafood! Hmmm! Cheap and nasty frozen fish and chips and a poor excuse for a salad. The worst calamari I have ever eaten and very poor quality chips. The plaice was dry and tastelessWould not recommend this place.........

Very good comfortable place for drinks - lots of collectibles to look at and reasonably priced drinks. We returned for drinks and saw the same scruffy man in the same seat as the night before and was told it was the owner!! Not a good impression and might put customers off! Unfortunately our dinner was not good. steak tough - cheap so I guess you get what you pay for. We were seated in the room alongside the river but the window seat gave us a view of the window bar! Right in the eyeline! So badly designed such a shame.also there is a balcony full of rubbish so unable to be used at the moment! Cleaned up it would be a lovely place to sit out alongside the river.

What else would a person want on a trip to Wales other than a roast lamb dinner? A nice place with slightly less than I would have hoped for accessible toilets. However, the food was plentiful and well cooked. The mint sauce in plastic packets detracted slightly, but overall a nice meal.

Stayed here with my wife, the view from the room was great.We were woke up the next morning by my wife being stung by a wasp in bed! Turns out there was a nest and actually about 15 in the room!When I told the chap that runs it about it, he gave me this look as if I just scam hotels for a living and shoved a tenner in my hand. 'That's all you'll get' he said. What a nice chap.......

Stopped by on the hoof as we had been walking around looking for somewhere to get lunch. What a surprise as the food was more than ample, hot and filled empty tummies just nicely. Decor in the back eating area is dated along with the menu but we found plenty to choose from. Quirky place. A good find with food reasonably priced but portions good and well cooked.

Called in here a couple of times during our stay in Llangollen. Really nice, unusual bar with Chesterfield settees and lots of vintage memorabilia, some really interesting stuff. They are also a restaurant and serve very reasonably priced food but as we didnt eat here I can't really comment on the quality. Drinks were good though and reasonably priced.

went here for sunday dinner for the first time..so glad we did. lovely dinner all home cooked will be going a again best thing is the kids really enjoyed the food and pudding...staff were really nice as well. happy days

We were welcomed by a barman called scott he was very helpful and made us feel as ease. This restaurant is tucked away in bridge st just a few yards away from the royal hotel. The meal we had was cooked well. Decent pub with good value meals selling good ales. locals seem frendly enough, antiques hanging from various places make it interesting, well worth a visit.

Cannot say anything about the rooms (though it was interesting to see that they are listed as having in-room jacuzzis and other intriguing amenities), but as bar it is probably the best choice in sleepy Llangollen for night time drinks. There was a decent crowd in even on a quiet and rainy December night, plus the bar staff were very friendly.The interior is a carnival of memorabilia: trumpets, toy cars, bicycles, Holy Grails... sometimes this looks kitschy when bars adopt this style but Benson's pulled it off. I was very impressed by the chicken curry served by the bar! It comes in a huge portion with both rice and chips so you won't need to order any starters or dessert.Nice bar, if I lived in Llangollen this is probably where I'd drink at night.

Pleasant bar on Bridge street , novi,to factor with memorabilia adorning the ceilings . Over priced drinks in comparison to the Bull Inn just up the roads

We came here to watch the Final of the Rugby League but the Welsh football matches took precedence (understandably), so we watched the Final until it was turned over to catch the build up to the football international. The place is interesting to look around and there are lots of places to sit and lots of screens.

Lively bar on Bridge Street, bit pricey but no different to anywhere else price wise. Modern but with lots of different arti facts around the pub. Friendly staff

So down for a day visit to Llangollen...,called in for lunch.......grab a back window to view the River Dee. On the menu steak and ale pudding, ok give it a try, wow its good, (its made with suet) this is food as it shoule bve. A pint of beer to go with it? yes please, which was also good bar staff very friendly.Looking at other meals being served I would recomed this restaurantfor a meal.

We stopped here for a beer and coke , But they don't sell Coke, staff unsure what it was they were selling.

We visit a couple of times during our stay and we were very impressed with the layout and character of the place. The walls, ceiling and crevices are packed full of charm with vintage toys, car memorabilia, musical instruments, you name it, it's here somewhere. Great conversation starter. Good for sports as they stream live events, but disappointed there wasn't more going on for a Saturday night (seemed to be aimed more at teenagers playing pool). We didn't eat here, yet the food looked good. Only negative is the staff who didn't seem to have a clue what drinks to serve. Never heard of Bombay Sapphire Gin and weren't really sure what stock they had or where to find it. Great potential and would recommend for a quick stop.

Pretty similar to other reviews. Had a meal and mediocre beer. Salad (if you can call it that - shredded lettuce, a chopped tomato and a chunk of cucumber with no dressing) served on a hot plate! The place has great potential- but needs a bit of tlc, and customer care.Shame really. Local lad's we're fine and amusing watching the pool, shame they didnt change as their hi-viz jackets were hardly appropriate at 9pm!

Stayed here recently on a Stag do. It served its purpose. Rooms dated, not in the best of condition but spacious. My bed had springs popping out of the side of it which I scratch my arm on during the night. Food very good but breakfast a little wanting. One sausage, one bacon, one egg, one plum tomato, I hash brown, 1 slice of toast and some beans. Could do with beefing up especially for blokes on stag dos but overall a good stay. Bar stays open till around 2am with is a bonus. Staff friendly despite comments to the contrary on here. Free Wifi, Sky and pool table.

If your looking for a pub with off beer and bad customer service look no further. Popped in here for food and drinks with friends, ordered a round of drinks while looking a menu. Two of the drinks didn't taste right so took back to bar staff, they were very rude and didn't give an alternative to the issue. We didn't order food or any other drinks. Won't be recommending or taking any of our visiting friends here again. Very disappointed.

Went in with friends when visiting Llangollen for a drink and meal. Very poor service. Bad attitude from bar staff and a regular sat at the bar. What a shame that you find it appropriate to be so rude to new customers

Went in for drinks and food with friends, had to take two beers back as they tasted off, staff were very rude and unfriendly, accompanied by local man drinking at bar! Did not stay for food! Would not recommend going here!

Stayed here for my stag do. Rooms were clean and spcaious, breakfast was hearty and they had Sky TV and a pool table at teh bar so everything we could ask for

We actually only had drinks here......but both bar staff and locals were very friendly, and the place itself was welcoming and comfortable!

On our first night we walked passed this hotel thinking it was a bit clicky. However on the second night we entered and found a very warm welcome. The Antique toys etc., are a joy to the memory. The meal we had was very good and the wine was not expensive. Yes the double glazed window has not been fixed. We have also read the reviews on this hotel and the bedrooms which we cannot comment on. We had a good time there.

A good bar in a good location, we didn't eat hear, only had some drinks, which where good, all reasonably priced, and they had lots of choice on offer, the staff where nice and friendly and it is situated in a good location, so you can easily visit other bars around it to.

Spent 3 nights in here and ate twice. The menu is limited and a poorly photocopied production. However, the food served was rather good and appeared to have been sourced from fresh products. Sadly when we first visited neither the trout nor the mixed grill were available. One member of staff called Scott was very accommodating.Avoid visiting on Sat afternoon if you want quiet. That said, it is a sports pub and one would expect such noise.

Stayed for two nights room with balcony overlooking river (view wonderful) room dreadful, very basic and drab, no facilities, needed complete refurb, cobwebs and dead flies all over the inside of the patio door, bathroom was a joke, not even a toilet roll holder, no shower curtain. Freezing cold, radiators turned off. Breakfast first day was excellent served with 2 rashers of bacon, second day only one, and food cold, had to ask for another pot of tea as it was stone cold and obviously been standing for some time. Only stayed on the second day as we had arranged to meet up with friends and as they were in transit we were unable to make contact to tell them not to come, otherwise we would have packed up and returned home.

A very welcoming friendly place to eat good modern seating area, value for money, well presented food. seams to be a local regular place to eat also. very quirky as you can spend hours looking at the various items hanging from the rafters in the bar area, nostalgic and interesting.

Visited Benson's twice recently whilst in and around Llangollen. It is in a superb position, overlooking the River Dee, and offers a range of good food at a reasonable price. It is open all day and you can call in on spec without pre-booking. The meals are more than adequate and the service is good.One slight drawback in that the tables are bit cluttered, due to the shape of the restaurant, and the music from the bar can be somewhat noisy at times. All in all a good deal in a lovely location.

We had a drink here in the afternoon sat outside overlooking the river dee, fab spot. We then decided to come back for dinner in the evening, we had three courses for £10.25 starter soup, main roast beef or lamb, and pudding. The portion sizes are huge and after three courses we were stuffed, the kids portions however are very small and my 8 and 6 year old could have ate another plate full. We sat in the back of the pub in the restaurant overlooking the river.the service was fab, and all food was homemade and served piping hot definately cooked to order. Definately recommend as a great place to eat in Llangollen.
