Stood in doorway by takeaway order area, away from restaurant area as had dog, was about to order Pre-determined food request to minimise time in doorway. Immediately greeted with ‘get your dog out’. To clarify was not restaurant. Did not even get opportunity to explain I’d be happy to quickly order and return. This bearing in mind we’ve been staying in Tetbury and dog has been in local pubs/cafes. Rude, abrupt, arrogant. A simple “sorry but” would of been sufficient.

Takeaway option, no dining in option on the night I called in . My Balti chicken tikka was bland, lacking any depth of flavours. I asked for a single chopped green chilli as an afterthought, but that was £0.50 extra.

Hands down the WORST food I have ever attempted to eat in my life. Looked and smelled like vomit. Honestly a pathetic attempt at cooking. What's more infuriating is they must know it. My partner ordered at the restaurant and brought it home for us to eat. As soon as we started dishing up, the absence of quality was obvious. We had a taste of everything and felt immediately sick. The korma was watery, gritty, anaemic and bland, the 'king prawn' balti was like chewing balls of rubber in tomato soup and oil. What's worse is we immediately called up to complain and get a refund.. and they closed early. They obviously knew it was awful and probably didn't want the hassle. But this is not over. I would give minus stars if I could. Where's Gordon Ramsay when you need him..

Not good for people who are familiar with Indian food. The chole had no zero gravy, was a dry chickpeas bowl. The aalo gobi was somehow stripped off its natural gobi taste also and was terrible. The naans were digestible. Perhaps good for people who like bland flat food.

I’d give the meal overall a 3.5 if I’m being honest, but I’ll rate 4 instead of a 3. They unfortunately don’t serve chips, they do some sort of potato though. Onion rice was nice, as was the pakora. Chicken Balti was decent, nothing major though. The chicken was nice, but the actual curry/sauce there wasn’t much of. Very friendly guy at the door who served too

We tried a takeaway from here whilst visiting Tetbury. Despite the reviews we wanted to give this place a shot. Unfortunately the quality of food was awful, we had to dispose of most of it as it was so unpleasant. We ordered a chicken achari and chicken madras. The achari was horrific, it tasted as though someone had taken a chicken curry and just added copious amounts of jiff lemon juice to it- not like any other achari I have ever eaten. The madras was less offensive but lacked flavour. The chicken in both curries was so tough it must of been reheated several times. We do hope this restaurant can improve as it is a great location and would probably have a good monopoly in the area.

We ordered chicken chaat puri starters and chicken dansak for the mains, with naan bread and mushroom rice. We love those choices usually, which is why we ordered them on our week away. Sadly, they were disappointing. The chicken in the chaat was dry and the sauces for both choices were bland. We have given one star for the service, very friendly. The other is for the naan bread which was actually very nice.

It's not your typical Indian restaurant. It's quite small, the walls are very plain, painted magnolia, with few decorations, so very basic. There was no music playing in the background either, so not the ambiance you usually get in an Indian restaurant. But the place was full (it was on a Wednesday) so obviously a popular place to go. The food was very nice, the service was good. You bring your own wine or beer so it makes it a relatively cheap evening. No frills, but if you're going purely for the food you won't be disappointed.

Very nice Indian food. The dining area appears small but it easily held a party of 15 and a party of 12 and still had some tables for addition customers. The food was great, everyone was more than satisfied with the quality and quantity of each dish (not swimming in oil). The restaurant is not licenced to sell alcohol however customers can bring their own with the restaurant supplying the glasses (and Cork screw if required). All in all good food, good service and a very pleasant evening.

Found the curry to be too sweet for everyone we have tried on our three orders from them. Still buy their garlic naan bread if we're making at curry. The Spice Merchant in Malmesbury is worth the extra journey (10-15 from Bengal Lancer) for much better curry. We went to this restaurant as we like Indian food and it was very close to the hotel where we were staying. The food is OK. Nothing exceptional about the curries. The prawn curry had small shrimps rather than prawns. The naan was really good. The dishes were available in medium and hot in terms of spice. However, the hot was not really hot. The service was good. They do not have a licence but will let you know when you book so that you can bring your own booze. There is no corkage fee. Booking is essential as they are small and have few tables. Their business seems to be mostly take out. The take out business was quite brisk when we were there. All the tables were also booked. The wait for the food was not long as some of the reviews have indicated. If you are really into good Indian food, you may not like this place. If you like mild Indian food then you will probably like it.

We had planned a family meeting in Tetbury. What can I say...we decidet to go to the Bengal Lancer, because many of us do like a good curry. What we got was only a terrible experience of very bad food and unkind staff. The poppadums smelled rancid, they don`t serve wine or beer, so we had to drink softdrinks which ran out of bubble, as I would like to say. A small cosy restaurant which does normally require a table booking, but it is worth it, as the food is very good with a good range of foods, and the staff are very friendly. When you become a regular they remember the kind of heat you like in your curries, so when you say you want a certain curry with mid range heat, they would say a reminder of what you had last time, such lovely service. Also they don't sell alcohol, so you can take your own but they do sell soft drinks. They also do take away's. This is in no way the best Indian food ever. Its not even average and is hideously overpriced. It was a promising start with nice popadoms and chutneys but the samosas (Tesco's are better) and bahji lacked flavour. They were followed by 3 of the blandest curries I've ever had. The spices hadn't been cooked out for my madras (which contained four chunks of dried out chicken) giving it a grainy mouthfeel and no flavour. The korma would have been far too sweet for a dessert so I didn't get past the first spoonful. At least my son's vindaloo was properly hot but there was no depth of flavour behind the heat. The only one happy with their meal was my husband. Service was okay aside from clearly being put out by my asking for tea which they "would have to make." (I should hope so!) Frankly, I make better curry at home so we'll stick with that in Tetbury.

I was inordinately pleased when Flossy said we should eat out this time - partly because it demonstrated that she’s fully ‘on-board’ with this endeavour, but mostly because she suggested we re-sample the delights of ‘The Bengal Lancer’. It’s a long time since we ate in (as opposed to taking-away, the smell of which would always make my old Dad react in an unrepeatable way) and it was pleasing that little had changed. The bright décor and lighting are more modern and stylish these days – different from when we first arrived in town and it was still in the grip of the flock-wallpaper-and-Indian-art-print era – but as far as food and service are concerned, things were the same as always: wonderful. That said, the menu’s certainly evolved since our early days, with tantalising ‘Chef’s Recommendations’ having been added over the years, and the recent inclusion of fish dishes, but something I’ve always liked is their willingness to ‘alter’ dishes if or when requested. For example, a combination ‘spinach and cauliflower bhajee’ isn’t on the menu, but it’s never been an issue to produce one any time I’ve asked in the past…Persuading myself to break with something of a personal tradition of starting with mouth-watering chicken pakora, we both picked prawn patia and puree. There’s a lovely balance of spice and sweetness in the patia, which is nicely offset by the straightforward puree. Being, in effect, a fried tortilla-style bread, the puree doesn’t make for the lightest of starters (but what starter in an Indian restaurant is?) and it may be a bit filling if you’re not ravenous, but altogether it’s a tasty way to open proceedings. In a possibly vain attempt to eat healthily, Flossy then had succulent chicken tikka and I chose chicken shashlick – essentially the same but with added hearty chunks of green pepper and onion – both of which were gorgeous, every piece of chicken being moist and subtly spiced (which I know because Flossy couldn’t manage all of hers..!). Accompaniments comprised of a nicely ‘green’ and dry spinach bhajee, mushroom pilau rice and tarka dal lentils which, as hinted at, were happily ‘spiced up’ to Madras-level. Now, I’m not bad at cooking rice, but it’s a mystery to me how these guys manage to make every grain so separate and perfectly cooked. Some of you know the secret, I’m sure, but to me it remains a dark art!Soft drinks are available, but it’s perhaps a mixed blessing that the restaurant doesn’t have a drinks licence. Although, obviously, locals will know that’s been the case for years and take along their own hooch, ‘visitors’ could find this surprising, as I’m pretty sure it’s rare these days. Even so, the beneficial net effect is a cheaper bill, since you won’t have paid the standard 300% mark-up on a bottle of wine.According to Wikipedia, Britain's Food Standards Agency says the Indian restaurants account for two-thirds of eating out. If this example is anything to go by, I can understand why. All I can say is, “Bengal Lancer? Yes, please…”

Wonderful menu, pleasant staff. You can eat on site but need to take your own alcohol. Best Indian for miles.

Been there a few times as it is my local every time been let down either bad service or not brilliant food, but last night we had a take away. Whilst I was in there people kept coming back with missing items of their orders. We had three different curries and all tasted the same ! Terrible flavours not at all what we asked for.. Very disappointed and defiantly won't be going there again.

The food is really nice here. Always enough to fill you up. The prices are good. The atmosphere is a bit awkward because it's so small but the staff are polite.

I usually get my curries from Cirencester or Nailsworth as my local(The Bengal)has been going down hill(food wise) for years! But after a few years and reading some good reviews on trip advisor,I thought I'd give it another go.I got a takeaway of tikka/Doupiaza/pilau rice/Bombay and a plain nan!Really hoped they'd upped there game, but no!The basic Indian cuisine had little or no taste(I had to add "PEPPER")If you want a cheap meal and are not that into curries then go for it!

Been coming here for many years for sit-down meals and takeaways. Never had a bad meal; takeaways always the right order, piping hot.The restaurant is very small, the staff friendly and the atmosphere unhurried and soothing. My favourite place to eat around Tetbury. You bring your own alcohol, by the way.The only downside is a small minority of the clientele, down for the week-end, bringing city manners and city expectations.

...those who comment on the brusque staff have a valid point. Asking for a table at the end of an evening was met with a firm decline, yet upon collection of a takeaway it was obvious that we could, as promised, have demolished a preordered curry and been far from last out. All too much trouble it seems...

We regularly go to this lovely restaurant. Being vegan, the choice of food is far greater than in any other mainstream restaurant with helpful staff who are quick to check ingredients. As you can take your own alcohol, it gives the flexibility of your own choice whilst keeping the cost of the meal reasonable. I would strongly recommend this restaurant.

We are regular customers to our local family run curry house, which has been in the middle of Tetbury under the same ownership for many many years. The in house service is always the same, very welcoming and excellent. The food is always freshly cooked, hot and of very high quality. We have never experienced an indifferent meal. The fact the "locals" living in the Tetbury areas are all regular clients speaks highly of this gem of a restaurant, which has a compact and friendly dining area and an excellent take-away facility.

Fantastic meal out with great service. We eat plenty of Indian food and this restaurant is high on the list; food tasted fresh and it was all full of flavour. It’s BYOB and it’s only a short walk to the co-op.

The people are wonderful, warm, friendly, which made the stay. No one mans the Hotel/Pub from after breakfast until 3PM. I would recommend the rooms for the traveler on a budget...clean and with limited amenities. The people are amazing.

Just back from yet another excellent meal. We always try to eat here when we’re in the area. We know that the food, atmosphere and staff will be unfailingly fantastic and tonight didn’t disappoint. We each had the set meal for one and thoroughly enjoyed everything we had. Great value at £24.95 each and more food than we could eat, all served by super attentive staff. Wish we could get here more often.

Very disappointed with the Onion bargees over cooked with just abit of lettuce when I asked for some Rieta sauce the waiter looked confused and came back with some red sauce? We had less poppadoms than ordered And they got 1 dish wrong I think the waiter was new or just wanted to finish early as the other main dishes were very good. After spending over £100 was disappointed on a special night out👎

This wonderful little gem run by a husband from Turkey and wife from Slovakia prepare some of the most delicious food I’ve ever had. We had eggplant & red pepper mousaka and lamb tangine and topped the meal off with delicious homemade ice cream. Wonderful wine selection as well. Very reasonable prices. It’s a must visit in Broadway!!
