Does anybody know if this, one time ‘flagship’ restaurant will open again? All new Bangladeshi restaurants were judged against the Bengal.

I used this Indian Restaurant for 30 years, it was the best Curry Restaurants in Brum when the Two Brothers ran it, the food was fantastic with friendly staff and ambience, then all of a sudden the two brothers sold out and every thing went to pot, rubbish music and rubbish meals, why change a good thing with a fantastic reputation. Now they have knocked the Restaurant down, WHY, I wont go there again.

The food was nice, it has a good old time feel to the place, was a bit disappointed by how lifeless it was though. 7pm on a friday night and we were the only table, a due atmosphere, however came in for a take away on a saturday and it was rammed. Overall good food and service, very friendly.

Have been a regular since it was called the "Coral Cafe" in the early 70's. The Bengal Garden has been the "go to" bangladeshi restaurant most of my life so I feel qualified to comment here. Food is standard fayre, you know exactly what is going to be served, that was one of the positive attractions. Recent visits have mainly been for takeaways. The service is still ok but lacking in enthusiasm, the music is off-putting (this is NOT a steakhouse) and the food is average compared to the alternatives in Sutton & Boldmere. Another reviewer called the food "bland" I cannot disagree. I am aware that alterations are in progress & the place will be closed for a while. I am looking forward to a new beginning and shall certainly be near the front of the queue when it re-opens.

I've been a customer at The Bengal Garden for probably about thirty years on and off !! Visited Sunday (06/05/18) at very short notice with a table of ten for a work leaving do !! We were quite late in but there were other guests still there .... For a fairly rowdy and disorganised mob , the service was special .... Incredibly polite and friendly with drinks delivered swiftly !! Great menu with obvious classic dishes and good vegetarian options .. (I'm not a vegetarian but I seem to order veggie dishes when I go out !!) Food was also delivered promptly and it looked good ... Nicely presented and piping hot ... I understand the place is under new management now but the key thing for me was the service ... Friendly , polite and perhaps tailored to suit our crowd !! There's a lot of choice when you're eating out in Boldmere ... Pubs , other Indian restaurants , Mexican etc but , for me , maybe it's nostalgia but nothing tops The Bengal Garden .... It's been there forever and long may it stay there !! If you've never found the place , shame on you !! I'll definitely be trying to make it a more regular treat again ... Excellent food and drinks choice and service with a smile which left us all smiling !! Quite simply , Boldmere's finest !! Always has been and still is today ... A really nice , comfortable experience .... Highly recommended !! :)

Bengal Gardens was our favourite restaurant for over 40 years. Then it changed . We gave it a go but didn’t like it at all, left it a while and tried it again this weekend. It was a little surreal . Never been to a curry house with soul music playing , loudly. Bistro typed pictures on the walls of the old run down restaurant that we loved. It was very noisy , we were sat by the bar . The kitchen doors constantly banging as people were going in and out. A phone with a loud shrill ring going off . And the loud soul music. Uncomfortable to say the least. The main food took ages to arrive and it was plain and bland with little meat in it. The staff were friendly enough but not like it used to be. A completely different atmosphere . Don’t think we will be returning, such a shame.

I have to hold my hands up, I have avoided the Bengal Gardens since my last visit over 12 months ago. The food then had gone right down hill in my opinion and the waiters that I had know and seen for many years disappeared. After reading other reviews at the time it had appeared they had a change of ownership. Now however they are back! I recently visited with a group of friends and wasn’t expecting much after my last visit but boy did they impress. The food was amazing. Right from the off the staff were warm and welcoming. Even had a chat with one about the problems they had before and how they have come out the other side with a new owner. I can’t wait to visit again!

I have been a loyal customer here for over 30 years. As Sutton’s third opened Indian restaurant in 1973 the Bengal is today not without competition. Today the food and the service is as good and in many ways better than it has ever been. Nothing is ever too much trouble. The food is consistently great and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Mike Baldwin of the Shaban with no license and cheap rotten food I wouldn’t feed my dog there ! Good luck to the guys at the Bengal Garden you deserve success.

Had pre-booked a 7.30pm table for birthday, when we arrived the table was free but not ready so stood around others eating meals. When shown to the table they clearly did not have enough menus available and had 2 menus to share between 5 of us. They were busy and clearly disorganised and unable to cope with so many people. We finally ordered drinks and poppodoms still with no cutlery or napkins on the table which had to ask for. We ordered main courses and after waiting over an hour for food I asked a waiter to check on our order, he never came back to us with an answer. We waited another half hour (its nearly 9pm now) and I asked the main guy what had happened to our food. By this point another table of dinners had informed us they had waiting for nearly an hour for a menu and another group said the service was so slow they would not be returning. The manager was apologetic and said he was short staffed as one member of staff had not come into work and gave us a free bottle of wine - which didn't really make up for the evenings disappointment. We said we would pay for our drinks and poppodoms and leave but he assured us our food would be out in 5 minutes, which it was. The food itself is tasty but our evening had been spoilt so we will unfortunately not be returning. An evening meal out at Bengal Gardens should be about the service, food and atmosphere - they can't cope and will lose a lot of customers if they don't get it right. You can forgive the Bengal Gardens for the 70's/80's dated decor and rather smelly toilets but this was a very poor birthday night out.

This is the oldest Indian restaurant in Boldmere and as such, mainly ignored by people like me - I last visited it some 40 years ago and had a steak as, indian food was a bit too exotic for my uneducated taste. Well, all that's behind me now. So, as part of my tour of all the restaurants in Boldmere (there are many) and armed with a 10% discount voucher handed out at the Boldmere Street Festival I somewhat reluctantly headed on down.Tucked away in a side street, somewhat sleepy but clean, tidy and my memories of velvet flocked wallpaper vanquished, we were greeted and seated as you'd expect. The Maitre D' was excellent, guiding us through the menu, advising things that we might like to try having asked us what we would normally eat. The attention was not invasive but he was always there if we had queries or comments. The service and meals we had were absolutely superb and the general ambiance not spoiled by overly loud music. Such a great time and great food, hence we chose not to use the discount voucher - highly recommended

Very much stuck in the 80s traditional curry house in need of refurb and a clean carpet but having said that very popular and food good. Red wall paper and oddly divided restaurant in a semi-detached house on gate lane. Menu is a very standard no surprises curry balti menu with choice of chicken, prawn or "meat" curries. Certainly not up-market and one of many curry places in Boldmere this place appears to survive by a long established regular cliental and good prices. An average meal, pleasant friendly staff and what appears a very efficient take away service. Suggest book at weekends.

Went for a meal with a couple of friends and family. Chicken tikka starter was ok, with the chicken being fairly moist. Ordered a lamb saag balti for main. Dish arrived and it was a very thick and heavy balti sauce. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, however there was loads of it and it really wasn't very tasty. It also made looking for the limited amount of meat in the dish very difficult. Staff were nice enough, however there are a lot better curry houses in Boldmere in my opinion. The waiter got my meal mixed up with another family member and i had to fish his food out of my rice. My daughter in law complained that her food had cold spots in it as if it had been nuked in a mico wave. She later found a grey hair in her meal. The manager said it was off an onion but she is a hairdresser. The bill was written in a very confusing way and we couldn't work out what the prices related to. All in all a very disappointing night.

I've been using this restaurant for over twenty years and have enjoyed every visit. I visited on Saturday 25th June and found the two trees out front had gone, not a bad thing I thought! Once inside I noticed the traditional red flock style wallpaper had been painted over with a roller, but not in a good way, very patchy and generally poorly done, I was then greeted by a new face, an older bloke who just talked and talked, he asked if we had been before, so I told him we had been coming for over twenty years and I didn't recognise any of the waiters and said that someone had started the redecorating and when will it be finished, I was then told that he had taken over from his casin who was ill, he said he had sold his restaurant and taken this one on, he then argued with when I said I had been her twice since the new year and had never seen him or the waiters before. I dint take to this guy at all, much too in your face and a little aggressive with his manor. Thankfully the food was as good as every. In short I won't return and feel very sad about it, it's all down the the alleged new owner who talks a lot bull. This is the end of a very long friendship for me!

My husband and myself recently cut down eating out at Indian restaurants, as a lot of the food now seems very samey, and not really tasty at all. We did however revert to the Bengal Garden that has never changed in style of food, nor its tradition, since the Seventies. Delicious starters, especially the pickles, and the tandoori and sauce dishes are really different, and very tasty. The Chicken tandoori is excellent, as are the Sag dishes, and traditional curries. At least I can eat all of my meal ! A lot of Indian restaurants have been modernized, but this one has never changed, and kept its character. The staff are also very courteous and friendly. I have been visiting this restaurant for many years and often use the takeaway service as the food is very tasty. However, I decided one weekend I would take my partner in for a nice meal. We booked a table to avoid any disappointment only to be told on our arrival that we would have to wait 45 minutes and that others were waiting as well. They have a few chairs across the rear wall which were all full and people standing around the entrance door. Our meet and greet was a poor experience. If they wanted us to stay they could have offered us a drink to entice us to remain but nothing. They expected us to stand at the entrance, cramped with others for 45 minutes. They had clearly been accepting others walking in and requesting a table which then caused a huge back log. It's therefore pointless to book a table. We went elsewhere and had a very nice meal and fantastic service.

Visited last weekend with four other’s, We decided on here as none of us had been in quite some time & we knew we’d more than likely get a pretty decent meal. Now the decor itself , as you can probably tell from other reviews, hasn’t changed in a very long time. If your going to be honest, it is very tired and dated, in terms of curry house’s it s what you’d describe as old school! But nevertheless despite this, the food itself is very nice and the prices are very reasonable indeed. The service itself on the whole was nice and friendly, I however did find the manner of one of the waiters a little abrupt. All in all this little restaurant [the original curry house in Boldmere] has obviously done something right all these years and I think that’s a testament to the quality of the food. It’s a good sign when regulars come back again & again which they obviously do based on reviews on here alone. I still would like to see the place given a new look, but for a lot of people they clearly don’t see it as an issue, & to be fair as a business they still do very well and probably have no reason to think they need to make any changes.

If you'd like a proper curry house then come no further.. it's nestled away and very discreet but packs some punch in the delicacy department. The restaurant has been a local classic for decades. Friendly service and a great atmosphere. The waiters are dressed very well with bow ties and the service is smooth and quick. Tikka Bhoona Masala with pineapple amazing..Peshawari rice and garlic naan awesome..Chicken spinach balti fantastic..Simple bar.. carling, cobra, red or white plus spirits..Get in there for a very well priced meal..See you soon guys! Have used the Bengal since it opened over 40 years ago. Yes, it has the same menus and Yes the same waiters wearing the same suits as they did 40 years ago. The food is typical Bengali, typically priced with no surprises or frills. BUT, it is always the same. Always dependable. Always tasty. In fact I had the best "Patia" that I can remember having, anywhere. So Bravo, and well done to the oldest Indian restaurant in Boldmere. Keep going as you always have done.

This is very much a traditional India style restaurant, the decor reminds me of restaurants in the 1980' but don't think it hasn't been touched since then, it is very much new decor, just done in a very traditional style and the food is the best I've eaten and I've eaten in a lot of Indian restaurants. The choice of dishes is extensive and if you want it a little different, they will gladly modify the dish to suit your taste. I always have a peshwari nan with my curry and this is just the best one I've had, it's sweet, soft and full of sultans, it's perfect. The staff are great, very polite and attentive, but so much that they bother you. This is a must to visit when in Sutton Coldfield, I just love it!

My husband and i went last night for the first time, it wont be the last. The food was tasty, chicken was tender, everything was fresh and well cooked. Service was excellent but unobtrusive. The place itself had an old fashioned charm about it which i have missed in many of the modern indian restaurants. Classy place. If you havent tried it do!

Had a lovely meal last night. Very reasonably priced, excellent service. Great experience. For the people who complain it's like being in the 80's. They are right, but I like that. its like being on the film set of only fools and horses, and that adds to the atmosphere. The manager is very friendly and set up the business 43 years ago when he emigrated here from Bangledesh. So 43 years! They must be doing something right! I will definitely eat here agin.

There isn't any thing not to like about the Bengal garden. The food is good and well priced. The service is swift and unobtrusive. We took our own wine, even though they are licensed. Delicious and always cooked to a high standard. Makes a change from the others.

this is my second visit. the manager is charming, staff are accommodating and friendly. yes the decor is old fashioned but it all adds to the charm. i had house balti with mushroom rice and my husband a vindalo with keema nam. the food was tasty and well presented. The price was very reasonable. The manager even walked outside with us to say goodbye, I don't live in sutton coalfield but will certainly return when visiting family.

Haven't visited this curry house since the 1980s. When I walked in I couldn't believe it , as it was how I remembered from back then. That was ok as it is all about the food, the big problem was the food was awful one of the worst curries I have had in a long while . I certainly won't be returning for at least another 25 years god willing !

This place is not everybody's cup of tea as it is very much a 80's style curry house experience. Yes, the decor is dated and the staff wear shiney black suits. The food is good, the waiters are very curtious and genuinely happy when you say that you are pleased with the food.I have been eating there for 30yrs. I know other people that have been returning for the same amount of time. Most of the waiters have been there a very long time too and it has remained in the same hands for as long as I have known it.I love this place.

The problem is where to begin, maybe our tastes have been moulded and improved by so many good Indian retaurants, our visit to Bengal Garden was like a trip back in time,(a poor one). The place itself is tired and in need of a major refit, the staff walk around in ill fitting dinner suits and the food was horrid, think of the times when what ever you ordered was covered in the same sauce or maybe one of three sat bubbling in the kitchen, well that's what we got. I would only revisit as a member of 1970s stag party. Sorry Bengal Garden you need to step up to the mark.

Visited the Bengal for a meal with family. We used to live in the area before moving away and thought it would be nice to revisit. It hasn't changed a bit in 30 years! It's really dark and dingy inside with red flock wall paper and dim lights making it look really seedy. The tables are set too close together, making you feel squashed in and you feel as though you should talk in hushed tones because other people are so close. The service was ok. The waiter was really impatient when one of us changed their mind when ordering. The food was ok. Nothing special and a bit greasy. The waiter came to take our plates away while we were half way through our meal and we had to stop him! Drinks were poor - coke out of big plastic bottles and totally flat. All in all, it was a bit rubbish. Needs a massive overhaul, some decent lighting and to be dragged into the 21st century. Won't be going back.

Not a big fan at all, my chicken tikka balti tasted like it had been doused in ketchup and was served in a shiny silver dish, not cooked and served simmering in a proper balti dish. Staff crawled all over us like insects. This place needs to move on, not stay stuck in the 1970s!

This has to be our favourite Indian restaurant. Whether you go out for a quiet romantic meal for two, an office or family party or simply a night out with friends you get the same excellent friendly service. Along with the consistent wonderful food you get the nice touches often only found in exclusive places, the door opened for you, your chair pulled out, recognition and names remembered from previous visits. Should you fail to find something to tempt you on their extensive menu, tell Ahmed (one of the managers) what you like and they will create something to suit. Equally if you're a new comer to Indian cuisine they will offer advise and come up with the perfect dish, and yes they will even give you a doggy bag for when you over order on all that scrumptious food. As the takeaway food is prepared in the same kitchen by the same chefs this is an excellent alternative for the perfect night in as a couch potato.

Our wedding anniversary , we have been here before and standards remain high . Food , drink , service , staff all good . Food was tasty fair portion for a fair price , service was very good , they also had 3/4 people on delivering take away,s must be doing some thing right . Parking is on the road or central reservation . we have no trouble in recommending The Curry Leaf .

Few negatives. Large party of us seated towards rear of restaurant. Felt like we were put there and forgotten. Only some got drinks by asking staff who walked past. We were told they were waiting for the rest of the party to turn up, so we were supposed to wait for them to arrive to be offered drinks? We had people who had cancelled, we could have been waiting forever, if we hadn’t decided to get our own menus. Empty glasses were staking up on the table even when our meals were served. Food was good but service was slaking. 2nd time eating there, 1st time as a group of 11. Not sure if I would go there again. Probably try the Resorts world venue instead
