You know those angry reviews you see, where they say. 'I'd leave zero stars if I could'? This is one where I'd leave 10 stars, if I could. Lovely old pub, great beers, excellent service and the food is insane. Vibrant, and everyone tucking in like pirates. RECOMMEND.

Amazing food, the small mixed grill is huge. Highly recommended

Outside looks meh. But inside was nice. Clean. Staff friendly. Service fast. But that's where the nice things end. The tables are packed in. I had a stranger sat about two inches away from me and could feel his body heat. It cost £90 for 3 tika masalas/naan/chip and 3 drinks. Diabolical. The masala was spicy?? But also didn't taste nice. It tasted like asda microwave curries. And the food arrived extremely quickly. Like suspiciously quickly. The chips were naff frozen oven ones. The naan (garlic and cheese) were thin, burned crispy, and tasteless. I couldn't finish it. The people I was with did but only because it cost so much. Also the menus are disposable? You're given paper to write on, that they then take and bin once done. Like wasting paper just for fun ig. And the straws are plastic?? I'm hoping somehow recyclable buy who knows. I was very disappointed. I'll stick to my usual grove in Handsworth. Its cheaper and nicer.

Food is good but they've jacked the prices up massively! £30 for a mixed grill is outrageous.

Nice 'oldy worldy' pub, you can easily miss it if not looking for it, close to the jewellery quarter. They serve a nice selection of Indian dishes. I had a chicken tikka, a little too creamy for me, but good. I'd recommend the mixed grill to meat lovers. We had a selection of things and everything I sampled was tasty and well done. I did come out smelling a bit foody as steam from the food skillets tends to fill the air. There is paid on road parking outside and in the side streets. It's free after 6pm They also provide a take away service.

Food was absolutely amazing and priced just right.... drinks were a bit pricey so only had one pint, would have had a lot more but can't afford that price (one lager one coke £10)

Good curry but not an Indian feeling.

We’ve been eating here for years and it’s always been a treat, especially the mixed grill platter. However, today’s meal was nothing like what we’ve been served in the past. The larger platter (£29.95) seems to be suffering from shrinkflation but also a big change in taste and quality. What was previously mouthwatering was now bland and lacking in flavour. The delicious lamb chops have been replaced by some fish in batter that was like something from a frozen supermarket brand. The mains were no better, the lamb pathia tasted of tomatoe with tough lamb. The chicken jalfrezi was better but still nothing special. The service was just OK and food arrived quickly at least. Overall a very disappointing meal especially at a cost per head of nearly £35 including drinks.

So… interesting one, the food and ambience were great, we were a party of 10 and were given one piece of paper and told to tick boxes in order to specify what we all wanted and scribble notes ie no fish etc,, as you can imagine this was totally impractical and as such we needed help which when requested was given. We’ve given a 5 star rating due to the manager who ended up having to take our orders and was excellent. If we were basing this review on the initial ordering system it would be a zero, whoever decided that this system was a good idea clearly has never tried to order for a large group themselves, I suggest the management listen to their staff and/or see for themselves how this one page tick box exercise actually works in the real world with a table of 10 as it doesn’t. Hopefully, management will listen and find a logical solution which reduces stress for their diners and staff in order to match the otherwise excellent food and ambience…

The price increase here is a joke. A 50% increase over a year. Food was decent but I can't recommend this place to anyone, especially with the other options in Brum.

Came here last night and though the food was good, it has become so expensive. Not even any lamb tikka with the mixed grill, and £6.50(!) for a pint of Cobra. It is a shame, because the service was great but it is now prohibitively expensive.

Lovely pub with a wide selection of beers. We were served by a super friendly waiter, which is appreciated. We didn't eat, but it smelled delicious :P

A few too many tvs in the restaurant area, which was a bit atmosphere sapping. Good beer, curry ok but quite boring standard options (korma, rogan etc, you know the rest!). Service was friendly and quick.

Mixed grill was as dry as an old boots, think this place has had its day! Interesting items in the sinks and no soap...

Una muy buena noche mientras estaba en un viaje de trabajo. Dos de nosotros en un viaje de trabajo alojados en el hotel Hampton cercano escuchó cosas buenas sobre este lugar de un colega que vive en la localidad. Muy buenos currys y cervezas, buena relación calidad-precio y buen ambiente.

This place never disappoints 🙌🏻 the bar area has an old school pub vibe to it, which is nice and the food is exceptional! Already looking forward to returning again soon.

Went for food and it was all a bit odd. You have to tick off on the menus what you want. It was all a bit bizarre. We were right next to another table so we left and went somewhere else instead. Bet was good though. Neck Oil was lovely. Definitely if you're eating here, get a reservation in advance!!

Excellent We enjoyed a lovely meal at the H&C. We walked off the street into a bar with every table full of cheerful looking diners. The welcome was warm and we were shown to a table at the rear of the pub. A nice, chatty atmosphere - neither too noisy nor too loud. Fast service and the food was terrific. Excellent butter chicken. Spicy jalfrezi. Light and fluffy naan. Very good quality. Some nice local beers too - I tried the Pure Helles lager - brewed in Warwickshire. Will definitely return. Super venue.

Hen & Chickens might not look anything special from the outside but don't be fooled - the food is top notch. We visited for lunch recently and it was fantastic. We shared the tikka cod for starter which was delicious, thick and flaky. My rogan josh main course was excellent too, as was the perfectly crispy naan bread. Our meal was just short of £60 for the cod, a main each, a rice, naan and a couple of drinks and it was worth every penny. Well worth the few minutes' walk from the city centre.

No hay quejas sobre la comida aquí, disfrutamos de cada pedazo de ella. Pollo Balti y Rogan Josh estaban deliciosos, naan y arroz también excelente. No puedo entender por qué no hacen pedidos secundarios de su selección de verduras, ya que realmente quería probar su Dhal pero no quería uno completo. Buena relación calidad-precio también, y me pareció el personal educado también. No veo la hora de volver.

Got the lamb saag and a chicken biryani. Both were excellent, beers were good and the atmosphere was good

Food was incredible! Butter chicken was the best we ever had! Naan was so yummy. Fish Pakora was insane!! Service lacked attention to detail but they were friendly ! It’s a very busy place. Glad we booked !

Después de no haber hecho una visita por un par de años pensé en hacer una visita con la familia que vive en el extranjero y estaban desesperados por una buena comida india. Pedimos grandes parrillas mixtas y una parrilla de pescado junto con arroz y nans. La comida servida estaba caliente y sabrosa, pero los tamaños de las porciones en comparación con las visitas anteriores han reducido mucho su tamaño. Me quedé bastante decepcionado con el billete grande y las porciones más pequeñas.

Busy and bustling with groups, couples and families. Novel way of ordering food. Food came pretty quickly and was very tasty.

Haven't been for a while but food is tasty and well cooked. This place never fails to please. Staff are always super friendly and out of all of the places I've been there mixed grill is still the best.

So far so good. Just ordered food. Waiter was prompt in taking the order for a Tarka Dhal. Big groups are due to come in. Waiter prompt in finding me a table.

Platters are great, good variety in both the meat and seafood platters . Naan bread delicious and seated and served quickly

Pub es bueno. Lindo grifo. Ambiente decente para un pequeño lugar tranquilo. Pero ni idea de por qué tanto alboroto por la comida. Está lejos de ser supremo, pero está perfectamente bien. Parece extraño que no sirvieran ninguno de los platos vegetales como acompañamiento, pero eso fue secundario a las quejas sobre la calidad.

Ate here on a work trip. Quick service, nice atmosphere and good value.

The food here was incredible and the atmosphere is relaxed. Highly recommend the mixed grill signature dish but everything else that we got was also amazing. Unfortunately have to remove one star as a member of our party was forced to pay for a Guinness that he ordered by accident despite us being a party of 20. DOV: 13/01/2025

Been to this pub a few times over the years for a mixed grill and never been disappointed with the food. It's a little on the pricey side because of the location, but always serves up a decent mixi. Beer selection is great too. Lady behind the bar this time was very helpful and recommended a beer I'd not tried before. Gave me a sample and she was right, it was lovely so I had that as my second pint. Fantastic service.

I didn't put a rating for food down as I didn't eat on this occasion so it would have been dishonest. I will say this through, the smell of the herbs and spices was divine and if the food taste even a fraction as good as it smells then my palette will be well and truly served. I will go again and I will partake of eating experience.

Have been here before, but today was the first time visiting with gestational diabetes for my work Christmas meal. Was a little concerned that I would be limited for menu choices, especially also being pescatarian. The lady behind the bar was so lovely and recommended dishes that she knew would be lower in sugar and carbs & when I came to pay she remembered what dish I had ordered and asked how it was. Very good customer service and really considerate! Would 100% recommend. The team are common return visitors and will continue to be so!

¡A mi pareja y a mí nos apetecía mucho un curry esta noche! ¡Estamos muy contentos de haber venido aquí! El ambiente era genial. Nos sentamos y nos dieron un menú para elegir qué platos queríamos y luego fuimos al bar con el menú y cogimos nuestras bebidas. Nos preguntaron si queríamos pagar ahora o mantener una cuenta abierta en caso de que queríamos más bebidas, que me gustó! Tuvimos poppadoms y dips para empezar. Para nuestra red tuvimos un pollo korma y un pollo bhuna junto con un poco de arroz, queso naan y también peshwari naan. ¡La comida era 10/10! ¡Los sabores eran increíbles! Recomiendo encarecidamente este lugar para un curry muy sabroso y un buen ambiente frío!

Recommended by friends, so walked up from hotel. Great staff, great food ... And then there is Leighton. Well, there is Leighton and his other big bear friends drinking gin and Mediterranean Tonic. Ok for the banter if you can handle it, but not everyone can.

Great place, nice pub/restaurant with a friendly atmosphere and some great beers on tap. The food is indian cuisine, and absolutely stunning. The staff are friendly and helpful. Can't fault anything, great place and will be returning when in Birmingham.

Actually quite disappointed with the food. It was only ok. Mixed grill was fine but the curries were just cubes of meat in a puréed sauce, no depth of flavour. Not authentic in my opinion having toured India. If you are looking for a nice pint and an average British curry it would suffice but lots of better food places to go in Brum.

A friendly taxi driver recommended this place for dinner and, not knowing Birmingham well, my mother and I decided to try it. We were so glad that we did! The atmosphere is unassuming, but don't be fooled. The food is EXCEPTIONAL!!! Possibly the best Indian meal I've ever eaten. Every mouthful was food heaven. The staff were also lovely. Would highly recommend!

Terrible Mixed Grill. Charging £30 odd quid for a large mixed grill with hardly any meat on it is astonishing. The cheek to even put Fish as an extra £6 too is wow when other places offer this included. Flavourless food, was like eating fried chicken from KFC. Way better alternatives to this place with better food.

The curry was incredible, and massive portions! We only had a main and a naan, that was enough. Excellent selection of ale and friendly staff.

The four of us went while going on a trip to Birmingham normally I only go to akbars but my wife’s friend recommended this place I wish she hadn’t of bothered I really don’t think pubs should do Indian food

OK if you like football. Called in for something to eat one evening and the room we ate in had at least 3 screens showing a football match with loud commentary that not one person was interested in. Looking around there seemed to be screens everywhere so no chance of avoiding it. No thanks.

Wow- wanted to come here for years - booked well ahead and loved every minute. The mixed grill with fish pakora is fabulous, keema mutta was amazing, bhajis Nan and rice great, lovely staff and a fab atmosphere- packed at 6.pm. Now having a lie down via stuffed 👍

Ate here a few months ago and forgot to review! Really cool spot. From the old school pub look outside and in the front room to the more formal dining out the back. We had a few beers in the front room and then decided to eat because how nice the food smelled. It did not disappoint! Cant wait to try some more dishes

It's a place of 2 halves. The cool vibes bar and the dark, something from the 90s back room. Food was lovely, beer was meh, service cordial and friendly. Will definitely go again, just must make sure I book ahead and make sure it's in the bar 👍

We got the chicken tikka masala. I’ve eaten this for over 20 years and have yet until last night had ever had it sweet. It was gross. The chick peas were good. The naan seemed to have some kind of oil poured on it rather than melted butter. And for the first time in my life, you had to order rice, it doesn’t just come with it. The trash outside blowing covering the streets maybe should’ve been a sign. Would NOT recommend.

Booked a table for Saturday at 3:30pm. Turned up and there were families who couldn’t or didn’t want to control their children all over the place and instead just wanted to get drunk. Very loud environment and lots of very drunk people shouting which meant we left before even ordering. Not worth the trek from centre of town at all.

I was not happy with the service, butter chicken was really good before but the flavour has changed recently. Reported to the waitress but they did not bother changing the food

The chicken in the mix grill was tasty but was a bit too hard. It didn't feel fresh and well marinated. The lamb chops and shish were amazing. The fried rice was pretty good too. The other dishes that my friends ordered were good too. The service was amazing. The two ladies who served us were really patient and nice to us. I hope the place does better justice to the name and serve better chicken

This is a fantastic little place when you first turn up it looks like a pub and not that inspiring but when you go around to the restaurant the atmosphere the food the buzz just superb a real gem. Food was really easy to order super quick arriving stuff for lovely cleanliness was superb. Thank you so much for a fantastic evening

OMG. Amazing! On trip with work and stumbled across this gem. Rustic feel pub with friendly staff and the best Korma I’ve ever had. It’s often intimidating eating alone, but I was made to feel welcome and served food within minutes. Pub and curry at its best. Don’t hesitate to try this place!!

We won't be going back in a hurry, in contrast we appreciated the warm welcome from the Gunmakers Arms around the corner.

We made a booking and we’re waiting over 30 minutes and not one staff member came over and gave us menus or ask if we would like to order any drinks.I asked the staff if we could have some they said yes won’t be moment and just forgot about us while the rest of the staff were talking at the bar

An unexpected gathering with a fantastic atmosphere and food to die for. The moment we walked in the staff were amazing and friendly as I sampled the ale I was offered suggestions and samples . A really lovely simple menu quick service even though the place was buzzing and the food really was truly amazing. Highly recommended

Going to a curry house with generous meat portions, quick service, and authentic flavours is truly refreshing. I had the mixed grill, and everything was cooked fresh and served sizzling. I'm eager to go back and try more dishes. They also offer a good selection of quality beers, which is a fantastic touch when enjoying a spicy curry. This place has a casual, pub-like atmosphere, making it perfect for a laid-back meal before heading into town, though perhaps not ideal for a date night.

My partner and I love this place, we treated ourselves to their famous mixed grill last night and of course our favourite fish pakora. Was also shocked yet pleased to see they have Cruzcampo on draught.

This is my go-to place for Indian cuisine. Their butter chicken and cheese naan are to die for. Their spice level is just perfect. Another favourite dish of mine is Chilli Fish. Love their pricing and portion.
