Hen and Chickens PH in Birmingham

Our party of six visited here last night and it was amazing. We had a great table I the main restaurant, staff were superb and the meal was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their food and the atmosphere was great. Thanks to the Hen & chickens for a top night out !

Drinks expensive and hassled to finish drinks 30 minutes before closing then staff rude saying thank you to us for having no manners

Out with friends for a few drinks and food , this place never fails to hit the spot , food is red hot and tasty . The madras was absolutely delicious and the mixed grill is a sight to behold. This place is an absolute must

Terrible Mixed Grill. Charging £30 odd quid for a large mixed grill with hardly any meat on it is astonishing. The cheek to even put Fish as an extra £6 too is wow when other places offer this included. Flavourless food, was like eating fried chicken from KFC. Way better alternatives to this place with better food.

I recently dined at Hen & Chicken with my wife and our two sons, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience! The curry was incredible, and massive portions! We only had a main and a naan, that was enough. Excellent selection of ale and friendly staff.

The four of us went while going on a trip to Birmingham normally I only go to akbars but my wife’s friend recommended this place I wish she hadn’t of bothered I really don’t think pubs should do Indian food

OK if you like football. Called in for something to eat one evening and the room we ate in had at least 3 screens showing a football match with loud commentary that not one person was interested in. Looking around there seemed to be screens everywhere so no chance of avoiding it. No thanks.

Wow- wanted to come here for years - booked well ahead and loved every minute. The mixed grill with fish pakora is fabulous, keema mutta was amazing, bhajis Nan and rice great, lovely staff and a fab atmosphere- packed at 6.pm. Now having a lie down via stuffed 👍

Ate here a few months ago and forgot to review! Really cool spot. From the old school pub look outside and in the front room to the more formal dining out the back. We had a few beers in the front room and then decided to eat because how nice the food smelled. It did not disappoint! Cant wait to try some more dishes

It's a place of 2 halves. The cool vibes bar and the dark, something from the 90s back room. Food was lovely, beer was meh, service cordial and friendly. Will definitely go again, just must make sure I book ahead and make sure it's in the bar 👍

We got the chicken tikka masala. I’ve eaten this for over 20 years and have yet until last night had ever had it sweet. It was gross. The chick peas were good. The naan seemed to have some kind of oil poured on it rather than melted butter. And for the first time in my life, you had to order rice, it doesn’t just come with it. The trash outside blowing covering the streets maybe should’ve been a sign. Would NOT recommend.

Booked a table for Saturday at 3:30pm. Turned up and there were families who couldn’t or didn’t want to control their children all over the place and instead just wanted to get drunk. Very loud environment and lots of very drunk people shouting which meant we left before even ordering. Not worth the trek from centre of town at all.

I was not happy with the service, butter chicken was really good before but the flavour has changed recently. Reported to the waitress but they did not bother changing the food

The chicken in the mix grill was tasty but was a bit too hard. It didn't feel fresh and well marinated. The lamb chops and shish were amazing. The fried rice was pretty good too. The other dishes that my friends ordered were good too. The service was amazing. The two ladies who served us were really patient and nice to us. I hope the place does better justice to the name and serve better chicken

This is a fantastic little place when you first turn up it looks like a pub and not that inspiring but when you go around to the restaurant the atmosphere the food the buzz just superb a real gem. Food was really easy to order super quick arriving stuff for lovely cleanliness was superb. Thank you so much for a fantastic evening

OMG. Amazing! On trip with work and stumbled across this gem. Rustic feel pub with friendly staff and the best Korma I’ve ever had. It’s often intimidating eating alone, but I was made to feel welcome and served food within minutes. Pub and curry at its best. Don’t hesitate to try this place!!

Great food very small and noisy! Elbow to elbow! But Great food.

We made a booking and we’re waiting over 30 minutes and not one staff member came over and gave us menus or ask if we would like to order any drinks.I asked the staff if we could have some they said yes won’t be moment and just forgot about us while the rest of the staff were talking at the bar

An unexpected gathering with a fantastic atmosphere and food to die for. The moment we walked in the staff were amazing and friendly as I sampled the ale I was offered suggestions and samples . A really lovely simple menu quick service even though the place was buzzing and the food really was truly amazing. Highly recommended

Just finished having a meal at the Hen & Chickens in Allenton, and we had the most amazing service, with incredible service from all of the staff especially from Kaleeia. She was fantastic all evening

Going to a curry house with generous meat portions, quick service, and authentic flavours is truly refreshing. I had the mixed grill, and everything was cooked fresh and served sizzling. I'm eager to go back and try more dishes. They also offer a good selection of quality beers, which is a fantastic touch when enjoying a spicy curry. This place has a casual, pub-like atmosphere, making it perfect for a laid-back meal before heading into town, though perhaps not ideal for a date night.

Service was great, good atmosphere but food was borderline average. Mixed grill was super bland and left most of it, zero flavour.

My partner and I love this place, we treated ourselves to their famous mixed grill last night and of course our favourite fish pakora. Was also shocked yet pleased to see they have Cruzcampo on draught.

This is my go-to place for Indian cuisine. Their butter chicken and cheese naan are to die for. Their spice level is just perfect. Another favourite dish of mine is Chilli Fish. Love their pricing and portion.

Avoid like the plague. Rang 3 weeks ago to secure a booking for a group of 13 to eat and watch the boxing for the 18th. When I rang they were quick to inform me that they were showing the boxing and I proceeded to book paying £12pp for a deposit. I have now had a phonecall today to state they never intended to show the boxing and with 9 days left it is hard for us to find a suitable place. Poor showing on there part with them just offering an apology for being inaccurate from the get go.

Good food good beer! It's bar service for food and you fill out a form for your food, don't expect the waiter service of a good curry house. Have a mixed grill you won't be disappointed, nans were good too. Good way to watch football, eat curry and drink beer.

We all arrived 10 in group we had a few drinks prices very reasonable well done. Food I have had Indians food all over the world and this is about the best well done to all at the hen and chicken. I had a chicken jalfrazi one of the best and the rice well cooked very light and fluffy. With al this the best is really all the staff very welcoming and you get a warm welcome from the start to the end of you experiance well done all at the hen and chicken keep it up.

Well this was a jewel we found by pure chance and it made the weekend. Great welcome and bar service and superb food served to all eight of us. Food was unreal and way beyond what we were expecting. Good range of drinks and very easy to get to and from. Will return soon.

We've been a few times and always really enjoy the food, so we booked to come again on Saturday. Unfortunately the food was just not on par with what it was previously. The fish pakora came out lukewarm and limp - it had clearly been cooked hours earlier and poorly reheated. Naan had a weird aftertaste. Curries were fine, but didn't quite pack the punch they did before. I'm hoping it was a one off so we will give it one more go, but it was a disappointing experience.

Visited 30th March, 5 of us, pre booked before football. Busy, good atmosphere and food is excellent. Mixed grill presented steamy hot, tasty meat, food is cracking. Loads of people in there eating in the afternoon gives you at indication of the place.Hidden gem when you step through the door.

Disappointing experience. I have dietary requirements so tried to phone ahead but no answer, so popped in anyway - after being told yes we could be accommodated by one staff member, we bought drinks and sat to fill out an order form. Then a second staff member came to take our form, and asked a third staff member if that could be accommodated - who said no. Really frustrating as if we’d been told no the first time we’d have just moved on without buying drinks, or even better if the phone had been picked up, we’d have gone elsewhere to begin with. Would love to eventually try this place when they’re more open to fulfilling customer requests.

Nice 'oldy worldy' pub, you can easily miss it if not looking for it, close to the jewellery quarter. They serve a nice selection of Indian dishes. I had a chicken tikka, a little too creamy for me, but good. I'd recommend the mixed grill to meat lovers. We had a selection of things and everything I sampled was tasty and well done. I did come out smelling a bit foody as steam from the food skillets tends to fill the air. There is paid on road parking outside and in the side streets. It's free after 6pm They also provide a take away service.

Best Curry House in Birmingham, relaxed Sports Pub vibe, a menu they give you a pen with, wondered what this was all about? You simply tick what you like to order, the waitress was very helpful as one of my friend's was Gluten intolerant and was helped with her selection. I would advise to try and book, it gets busy because it's good! I had a meat/ fish feast £29 was massive and couldn't eat it all, so definitely to share. It's the best place in the area, if you are coming late at night, l would advise having company and l was told you are not walking back on your own, l will give you a lift, just not safe for an old boy.

Vey bad service. Lady on till, Lisa clueless!! The are wasting paper n plastic. Want you to order by ticking by pen on a new menu! I said at the till I know what I’m ordering I will tell you, she said no. You have to tick paper menu and give me. Why?! Waste of money for your business and very Easter for environment.

Absolutely awful!! Booked table with family to celebrate Mother’s Day 6.30pm Saturday evening. Arrived 6.20pm told no booking but will sort. By 7.15pm decided to enter restaurant to ask as not happening from bar side - had a table to seat us. By 8pm still no food - after watching pint of beer taken to a number of tables. Finally told would be another 10 minutes because the restaurant was busy!! Food cancelled never to return!! Awful service, awful atmosphere

Great food, great atmosphere, and friendly service. We visited on a Thursday evening as a group of 3, and luckily we'd booked beforehand, because they were full! We ordered the large mixed grill with fish pakora, two curry sauces, masala chips and a naan each, and that was too much! The methi tikka is delicious. Recommend the Cruzcampo on draught!

very busy restaurant the food took a tiny bit of time to come out but once it did it was great. The person serving out good cartik was great in explaining what all the spice levels of the curries were and the different sauces presented to us with the mixed grill.

Extremely poor service and rude manager

I am writing to bring to your attention a concerning incident that occurred on 24th February 2024 involving the manager at Hen & Chicken. I believe it is crucial to address this matter promptly, as it involves both abusive behavior and a complete disregard for disability precautions. During a recent interaction with the said manager, we had booked a table from 6 till 8. We rang ahead stating we will be late and arrived slightly behind schedule but at no point we were told that there would be a cut off time for ordering. We went to order food at 7:15 and got told we aren't allowed to as the booking is. Until 8, in 45 minutes the kitchen couldn't make food. We were served drinks without an issue 5 minutes after our table booking was up but they did make £80 from it. We questioned the food again and as time passed it was now 8:10 and still no food, the place was an empty pub and then me alongside my friends experienced a high level of confrontational and abusive behavior from the butch manager. Her tone and language were unprofessional and created an uncomfortable environment for all involved. I believe that such conduct goes against the principles of a respectful restaurant and is detrimental to the well-being of the customers. Furthermore, I would like to bring to your attention a specific incident that occurred on the same day involving our friend with cerebral palsy. He had gone to the disabled toilet and slipped and fell on the wet floor, there were no signs to indicate this but when mentioned one of the workers (Caucasian hench lady/they them) ran off with a sign to place it and have to audacity to shout at us claiming there were 3 signs already placed. At that point we were not drunk and nor are we stupid. They disregarded the safety and well-being of all customers. This not only poses a risk to his health but also highlights a failure in implementing and respecting disability accommodations. I understand the importance of maintaining a professional and inclusive environment. However, the recent incidents have raised serious concerns about the management style of Hen & Chicken. I request a thorough investigation into these matters to ensure that appropriate actions are taken to address the abusive behavior and to prevent any further disregard for disability precautions. We ended up going to Soho Tavern where we were accommodated with respect and the food was 10/10 unlike Hen & Chicken. I will not be attending again and will happily spend my money at Soho Tavern. I think nothing will be done but probably a message saying "please sent us a private message etc" Save your money and time and head to a better place. Ps parking is ridiculous too.

Went there on Friday it was absolutely amazing as good as the time before, we went for the first time in the Christmas holidays, good selection of beers on tap, food 10/10 good atmosphere and the staff are very attentive, highly recommended, make sure you book as its very popular. We will definitely be going back next time we're in Birmingham for drinks. The mixed grill and keema naan are the best I've ever had!!

I've been the regular customer , the food is really on top but the old lady staff disappointed us .She insulted us infront of all the customers just for her own negligence.

This place is perfect for people who appreciate great curry and real ale. It was a little noisy in the bar, however the manager was happy to relocate us to the rear dining room which was perfect. They are very busy most of the time making booking a good idea. There were two Purity real ales on tap and a wide selection of lagers. The mixed grill starter was a delight. I ordered the Keema Matar, this was too dry for my taste. Lisa, the wonderful lady behind the bar soon sorted things out. Overall a great experience.

The food was bland and catered more for the English palate not South Asian. The keema was dry and almost white so hardly any masala. The chilli paneer was an insult and the mutter paneer was too creamy. People normally say you can tell a good restaurant by the locals in it, well it wasn’t full of Indians which says who they cater for.

4 of us had a great Indian meal. The portions are large and good value. Service was excellent. The atmosphere was of a traditional local pub which was a bit different for restaurant class food but really nice. That was our first time eating there when visiting thr area but would definitely recommend it and hope tp go again.

What a fantastic meal. Mixed grill was fantastic (lamb chops,chicken wigs,chicken tika, spice chicken) onion bhaji delicious, nan bread fantastic, chicken bhuba and chicken korma. Highly recommended it if your in the area. Don't be put off by the look of the outside, it's looks like a pub inside and out.

Ive visited this establishment on many occasions and found the food to be fantastic however tonight while standing outside the place i was threatened by a guy who claimed he was the owner and accused me of bricking his windows ..i was litterally just standing there minding my own business now i dont want to rub muck on the place but i would like to know why they think this is acceptable

Another great meal. Authentic and delicious. Although this time a lot busier and noisier. The youngish waiter denied our request to just have a vegetable korma, and then said no when we asked to add some paneer to each curry which we were previously allowed and happy to pay extra for, however this was overhead by what seemed to be the owner who quickly accepted our request which was must appreciated! Will be back.

Ordered large mixed grill from Uber eats and the food came stone. Cold . No way has the chicken Tikka just come out the oven it was dry and cold. I called the restaurant and the manager Jillian didn’t have a care in the world didn’t apologize or anything just said call Uber eats it’s their problem. Shocking this place used to be nice but last 2 times I’ve ordered ira been horrible . Thanks for ruining my dinner and not caring about it . Much appreciated

By taking over this Victorian pub and adding a fuss free Indian dining experience, the Hen & Chickens offers Indian food at very reasonable prices. It's bringing people back into Hinckley, an industrial area of central Birmingham that is becoming fashionable again. I grew up in Birmingham and have eaten in too many Indian/Pakistani restaurants to remember, this one certainly won't let you down if you want a few drinks and a curry. Put a curry pub like this in London and it would have a queue outside.

Great Indian food with decent drink selection. Can get very busy and loud though.

Good portions and excellent food. Best to book in advance, even on what you'd expect to be a quiet week day it was quite busy and a table isn't guaranteed. They also serve Cobra (Indian lager) on draught.

Good little boozer, popped in for a pint or three before a gig at the Asylum. Decent selection of beers, and although we didn't eat it the food smelt amazing.
