This was really a 3.5, good as opposed to Average or Very Good. Quite a long printed menu which is a bit of a worry, but we knew that before we went and the area, apart from Salisbury, doesn’t seem to have many good eating options. Food was good, service a little slow, ambience a little quiet but there were 3 or 4 tables eating and a few drinkers so not deadly so. You could do worse if in the area, it is what it is.

What a wonderful find! Have been here over the years but haven’t been for a long time. Such a dog friendly pub, they really do go the extra mile. Wished we could have stayed for lunch, great menu but were driving from Devon to Essex. Can’t rate their attention to detail enough. Dogs even got given a bed for their visit! Will be returning with our 3 dogs very soon!

Stopped for lunch on the way to Salcombe as I've enjoyed stopping at The Bell since my first stop in 1966, and I wanted to see if it was as good as it was. It was! The setting is a traditional English pub, almost unchanged since 1966 - comfortable and cozy. The beer was good, and the food fresh and well-presented. I had the bacon chop (properly cooked so tender and soft on the inside and slightly charred on the outside) with excellent chips. Others had fish and chips and reported highly - with a good crisp batter. Well worth the stop once you have made it past Stonehenge.

Excellent. I can only assume that 'King S' has an axe to grind. I am local. The pub is very old, and the most attractive pub open in the area. The welcome last night was spot on. The food all appeared home made, plentiful and of very good quality. It was also piping hot. The pub brews their own beer, as well as providing other brands. The 2 dogs were very welcome - and we were given a table quite private, as I asked that I kept them away from other guests - even though they are 2 very friendly very socialised country male labradors. All in all, a very good evening. With pubs struggling, and a number of Wylye Valley country pubs having closed, the people running the Bell clearly do not need strange reviews like that of 'King S'. The pub is very old with uneven floors and wonky walls. If that is a definition of dirty, then..........! Strange. Well done. We will be back soon walking - as live locally in neighbouring village.

Booked a table on their website while we were heading down the A303 on the way to Devon. The booking was quickly confirmed by email. When we arrived Darcy welcomed us by name, and showed us to a cosy table. The falafels were excellent, the buffalo cauliflower amazingly crispy, and the chips were chunky, hot and fresh. Lovely staff, lovely food, and a lovely venue.

Really excellent meal and service! This is a pub which doesn't just give lip service to great food and drink, but truly delivers. Locally sourced food and beer brewed on the premises. Well where do I start, firstly I’m not the type to write negative reviews but I will make an exception here. The whole premises was dirty, my chair was broken, the food was edible, the waiter stank of BO, toilet seat broken and all this at a cost of over £200 needless to say I will not be returning ever.

Our family recently stayed in Wylye while visiting Stonehenge and Bath. We ate 3 times at the Bell Inn, and all 3 meals were amazing. Everything was fresh and delicious. Our family has members with both gluten-free and vegetarian dietary needs, and the Bell Inn had separate menus available with lots of options for each. Staff were very helpful and accommodating with our questions. We spent nearly 2 weeks in England, and this was by far our favorite restaurant. Part of the Inn dates back several hundred years, and it is adorable inside. The garden patio is relaxing with a view of the church tower and flowers. We truly loved this restaurant and hope we can return.

I went for a cycle ride to the Bell Inn for a coffee. I waited very patiently to be served which took longer than it should've done. To be fair the barman (landlord?) was having trouble with the cider pump not pulling properly but not once did he acknowledge I was waiting and offered no apology. When I did get served I still got no apology from the miserable bar staff for the delay. He told me I needed to book which was not made clear on their website and said if I wanted a drink I would have to have it on one of the outside tables which was not great as it was raining. I told him I wasn't prepared to do that and he said 'OK', again without any apology. I don't take kindly to rude bar staff and certainly won't be going there again. 1 star is being rather generous in this case. Rubbish.

We came across this lovely pub on our journey home from North Devon. We decided we wanted to give our custom to a local business instead of a big brand place in the faceless services we came across. So we took our chances and just turned off the main road to be welcomed by the sight of this lovely old traditional pub in a beautiful village. We were greeted by a very friendly young lady and given some menus. The choice of dishes was amazing and it was very hard to make a decision between them all. We were both very happy with what we ordered and it was presented beautifully and served fresh and piping hot. I wish we'd have had longer to linger and enjoy the surroundings and I also wish we could find room for dessert but unfortunately not this time. We both said we'd love to return when we are next down that way and sample some more dishes. Thank you for a perfect lunch.

This is a nice little pub very close to the A303 if you are looking for somewhere to stop on a long trip east or west. The menus are very, very extensive with an entire separate menu for vegetarians and vegans. They also seem to offer a host of gluten free options too. We had pizzas and pasta. The portion sizes are enormous (the pizzas come with a bowl of chips for example). The food is fine. My pizza was a bit soggy in the middle but to be honest it didn’t really impact a huge amount on my overall impression that this is a nice place to stop off for a meal on your travels.

A fantastic old Inn located in a picturesque English village and only twenty seconds form the dual-carriage way (this will not be our 'services' when we get stuck in the inevitable west country traffic!)Excellent selection of drinks including local ale, lager and gin and proper pub food done really well! None of the 'posh' deconstructed, tiny portioned crumbs that so many 'modern' pubs are trying passing off as 'meals'. We had curried prawns and chicken pate to start, fish pie and farmers chicken to follow which was all excellent, but the real show stoppers were the desserts (which we could only just fit!) Sublime honey cheesecake and the best chocolate dessert I have ever had, popcorn and all. Imagine my surprise to learn it was vegan, I would never have guessed!Should also take a moment to thank the lovely gent who seated us and the two younger ladies who were ever so friendly!

Stopped off from the A303 for lunch with my family and it is a stunning building with a very friendly welcome. Great choice of drinks and the beer looked great, unfortunately I was driving! The menu was very extensive and we were very confident of having a very good lunch, judging by the general positive feel of the place. When it came the portions were huge but the quality was not good. Stodgy fish pie with lovely prawns but overcooked fish, lamb shank was as my son told me underwhelming, with a pile of non creamy mash and thick bland sauce. Both the pie and the lamb came with a huge pile of watery unseasoned kale, no butter or anything to make it more interesting. So the food ethic seems to be quantity over quality that may please a lot of people, but when you have just had some fabulous pub food in the Devon/Somerset area, is a little disappointing especially with the high standards set in every other way. Still worth a visit but don't set your food expectations too high!

(August 2021) - We booked a week at the nearby (The Nest) in the Walled Garden Dog Freindly self catering (which was simply charming) and my daily afternoon walk with my spaniel was down into Wylye past the Bell Inn pub round 'the block' past the church and we would stop off for a cheeky pint or two to continue with his 'training'The Landlord(s) were so freindly and were fantastic with my dog. They have a bowl of water and a bowl of dog biscuits on hand as well. The old pub (14th Century) was simply great as a local little village pub serving a good selection of local brewed ales, which were always well presented and just too easy to drink, but I persevered. I can't comment on the food, but there was always people eating there so if their hospitality and beers are anything to go by I have no doubt their food was excellent. So nice to still find a nice local pub of this kind. Been here many years ago. It's a lovely place and good location if you are stopping for lunch enroute to the West Country. New owners took over last year (two couples I think) and it is now even better. Very warm welcome and really excellent food. Very fresh ingredients and nicely presented ...at good prices.I had booked online by email and they responded immediately. I had asked in email for a well lit table as my mother has limited vision. On the day we were running late but when I called they assured me late arrival was no problem. They were very friendly on the phone before I even set foot in the place. When I actually arrived they reminded me of the "well lit" request and had a very suitable table ready.Later on one of the owners spent some time speaking with my elderly mother, who knows the pub from the past, and thoughtfully spoke slightly louder as she detected my mother has a slight hearing loss. It's a couple of minutes off the A303 junction, in a quite village. Loads of parking. Take a walk around the churchyard if you have time.I'd recommend a visit!

It has been many years since we visited the Bell Inn. Coming out of lockdown we chose it to meet up with some friends for lunch. Five of us plus dog (very doggy friendly) booked for 1200. Covid precautions were excellent and we were shown from the front door to our table. Menus are fantastic with something for everyone and very reasonable prices. We did not have a starter and went straight for the mains which were all freshly cooked. There is a good choice of seafood and we could tell that the Seafood Pie used fresh, rather than frozen, fish. We also managed a dessert which again were homemade with a definite slant towards rhubarb which is nice to see. Two courses with drinks and coffee was just under £25 a head which was very good value. There is plenty of seating both inside and out and the toilets are definitely worth complimenting. Service was friendly and unobtrusive. Well done, we will be back sooner rather than later!

We popped by on a camping trip for some food and it was lovely. Very well organised with the outdoor dining. Family run and has such that family feel. Has a pets corner for the kids which is such a nice touch too. We ordered the steak with garlic prawns and a portion of chips for me. The chips were crispy and so nice and the steak was cooked a perfect medium with a lovely peppercorn sauce. Many apologies for the delay in food which I think was hardly a delay. 30 minutes for a fresh home cooked food is more than reasonable. The waitress told us they have fresh butchers and sea food deliveries daily and with the taste of the food you really could tell. We tried the local lager and it’s fair to say it didn’t disappoint, local I believe 1/2 a mile away. If we’re in the area we will deffo return. 10/10, absolutely delicious and friendly too.

The people there are so helpful & friendy, they are a delight, & justly deserve all the business in the current lockdown climate. The chef is excellent & the food well flavoured & is highly recommended, very delicious, fresh & large portions, and excellent value for money. We'll be back, although they do deliver locally. Thank you to you all at The Bell

OK I am biased - this is my “local” and my favourite pub too. About a year ago the new team at The Bell moved in - right at the start of lockdown. A year later (which must gave been hell on wheels fit then) I have just had another perfect takeaway. Wonderful liver and smoked bacon casserole plus fresh greens and mashed potato. The burger my wife had was perfect too. It’s often far too easy to take “your local” for granted, in this instance I was shocked into action. A great takeaway, fantastic service and the patience of saints. Can’t wait for the re re opening. Thank you all.

We came here for a takeout meal and it was amazing! Despite lockdown, the menu was extensive and has something for everyone, the owners were really friendly and were very accommodating, the food was very delicious, fresh & large portions. The village in which this pub is situated is so stunning and easy to access from the main roads. Cannot wait for lockdown to lift and to be able to support this lovely business again in the near future!

Have used this inn previously for takeaway and found the food to be of excellent quality and value for money.Recently received the new delivery service menu for the surrounding local villages. So what better excuse to let somebody else do the cooking! Ordering was a simple quick easy process with the food being delivered hot and ready to eat. Good quantity on your plate. Will be using the service again and waiting for end of lockdown to go and dine with a fresh pint in my hand. Very friendly staff and excellent service. They are pulling out the stops to succeed in theses hard times.Wish them all the best.

Simply the best! We’ve he best! We’ve visited and eaten here 4 times now. Perfect! Location, parking, building, atmosphere, log fire, beer and best of all food. Add to that reasonable prices and friendly attentive service I’m not aware of any traditional pubs offering what these guys do locally. I wish them success as they bought the pub in March 2020 straight into 3 months Covid lockdown and again in October. Not to be deterred we had the best Christmas Lunch ever. Thanks guys, superb!

Today we met my son and his partner for a Christmas lunch as we won't be able to spend Christmas together. We were given 2 separate tables next to each other so we could stay safe. What a gem this place is. Delicious food and warm friendly service. We will be back! Merry Christmas ☃️

Take aways from the Bell are the best thing about lockdown, confit duck leg to die for and some great desserts, so happy to hear they will still be doing their take away and delivery after lockdown!

Visited this pub in August 2020 and it was so good came back in October. Live a long way away so not our local and have to choose to travel to it. Absolutely well, worth it! Food excellent, staff lovely and atmosphere good. Highly recommend.

We had a happy evening in a friendly atmosphere and lovely roaring log fire but we were hit by the awful smell of deep fat frying as soon as we walked in and I knew instantly that this was not going to be fine dining. The menu is too big, “less is more“ and if they weren’t so ambitious with offering so much variety they could concentrate on fine tuning some of the dishes that were not very tasty. The portions are too big and overwhelming and the chips are huge and not at all inviting. I’ve always judged pub food on their chips and I’m sorry to say this one did not pass the test. The Cottage pie needed browning on the top, the mince was grey and fairly tasteless, the warm puddings also needed browning on the top.The staff are very welcoming, warm and friendly and I wish them well but perhaps during the next month of lockdown the chef could hone his cookery skills and maybe take advice from other local hostelries who have made it work.

I knew after a long day at Longleat we’d need to eat somewhere locally as the kids would be hungry. After an extensive search in Warminster, where most of the restaurants are closed on Monday, I looked at places in the vicinity. Even though Wylye was 20-25 mins away, I still booked the Bell due to the reviews. And now I know why. The food was fresh, delicious and very well presented. The service was impeccable and all social distancing norms were in place.I had the trout risotto with sea food - which was just perfect. The blue cheese in the fig tart was lovely. The kids had Mac and cheese and chicken strips. The ice cream tasted homemade.4 meals and drinks and we paid £55. Thank you for a lovely evening. And I am now reading the history of the pub! Absolutely a revelation!

Popped into The Bell Inn for lunch on the way down to Devon. We both had the steak sandwich lunch which was very very good. The steak was perfect, chips great and the whole meal would be a hard act to follow. Hopefully we can revisit on the way back.

The Bell was a revelation tonight. After many years of undistinguished food and beer the current owners have revived it beautifully and are rapidly getting a great reputation in the neighbouring villages. So we went along to see what all the fuss is about... and we loved it. Lovely friendly service, a good and interesting selection of local beers and gins - including a fantastic gin from Codford - and very good food. They even had gluten free bread for me at no notice at all. The portions are generous but we still managed a historic chocolate mousse and a scoop of excellent vanilla icecream. So pleased that the Bell now has owners who value a good welcome and good things to drink and to eat. Thoroughly recommended.

I had heard on the local 'grapevine' that the 'Bell' is really good now, having re-opened recently under new ownership and, we weren't disappointed. Far from it, we enjoyed a wonderful lunch. the three of us had different starters, the chicken liver pate, brie in breadcrumbs and fish cakes were delicious, we felt the need to share for some reason - all clearly home cooked too!. the cod and chips and scampi chosen for mains equally delicious - it's great that they offer some mains as 'Light Bights', but still sufficiently generous portions. This isn't just your typical run-of-the mill scampi; delightful light coating and super fresh, huge prawns. My son had a delicious light cheesecake with honeycomb ice-cream for pudding - nothing cloying here - pastry so light and crisp it bounced off the plate when I tried to steal some!It was a real pleasure to be able to enjoy such a relaxed lunch (particularly during these times) - only two people front of house on a busy Bank Holiday Saturday, but you wouldn't know it, given the attentive and swift service. A very warm welcome; a calm and friendly atmosphere, with excellent food - nothing more to add except we will be back - frequently, I hope! Thank you.Stafford family

We had a pleasant meal. The girls serving were lovely and attentive. The menu has its prices all inclusive of tax, but when the manager gave us our bill he added on extra tax. we then added a tip. It wasn't until I looked back at the receipt did I realize it was over £3.00 added on. For this reason I will not be going back to this pub. Just be aware and read your bill.

We booked a table for seven of us for a family meal to celebrate some Birthdays. The food and service here at this adorable little pub is amazing The new owners have absolutely transformed this pub and caters well for locals and passing traded alike We had drinks on the lovely sunny terrace with grape vines and then had a splendid slap up meal I had the burger with all the trimmings, others had the steak and chips with creamy sauces , fish pie, lamb and gamekeepers casserole The food was cooked to perfection The service is impeccable and we were all made to feel so welcome The choice of drinks at the bar are also brilliant They are open all day which is also a bonus. There is nothing worse than when you a travelling on the A303 and hungry and then find the pub closedA definite must to add to a list of little gems available to cater for all And finally the toilets have also been transformed into clean upmarket rest rooms

Fantastic food and service - great upstairs with the rugby commentary, but was asked to go downstairs as they only had 3 tables occupied. Live music was great with silent rugby, given Ireland lost anyway 😆
