Bedingfield Arms in Breckland

I recently enertained a group of clients at the Bedingfield. We took all the rooms which and my guests were all very complimentary about the comfort and decor. We enjoyed a fantastic meal in the conservatory and it was a pleasure to be able to order from the full menu rather than having to pre-order or select from a reduced menu which is often the case for groups. The food was escellent and the wine list very reasonable for the quality offered. The team were a pleasure throughout our stay and even came in early to serve breakfast before the usual time as we had to be away. A pleasure also to meet Catkin, fascinating to learn about the history of their ownership and much more! I will definitely use the Bedingfield again next time I am entertaining in the area.

Nice location and full of character, the restaurant has a good atmosphere but can be surprisingly busy, so booking i suggest booking is a must.

A really disappointing lunch here. My Auntie likes it here so she took me, but it wasn't a good visit. The location/setting itself is great. The staff were friendly, but the good stopped there. The food was overcooked (as you can see in the photo, the chips were really overdone). The alcoholic drinks did not match the quality (the white wine particularly was not nice). I barely drank half of the glass. Several hours later, I was really sick, and the fish and chips were the only thing I had eaten all day. Not a positive experience at all.

Rachel and I decided to have a luxurious couple of days break in Norfolk, have a look around Norwich and then explore the beaches on the north coast so we booked a couple of nights in a Stately Pile that looked like it fitted the bill. On arrival we found that we were given a room in an annex which was distinctly not luxurious. And while the staff were excellent the hotel was tired. We had a Google of the best places to eat in the area to try and make something of the stay and found the Bedingfeld Arms and booked in for dinner. Following a dark and foggy drive we arrived at the pub and as soon as I walked in I knew I liked it. A proper old country pub with real ale and a roaring open fire. It is obviously loved by the proprietor as it feels cared for and there is noticeable an attention to detail. Andy, who seems to be managing the restaurant and bar that night, found us a table and got us some drinks. We stated chatting and told him about the Stately Pile and how disappointed we were. Andy said that the pub had nice rooms and showed Rachel around. She was suitably impressed. So impressed in fact that we left the accommodation that we had already paid for and moved into the Bedingfeld Arms and extended our stay by a further day. The room was large with a massive bathroom, very comfortable all in all, huge bed, much more luxurious and much closer to what we had hoped for. Dinner was fabulous. Andy talked us through the menu. I had chicken liver pate and venison for a main and Rachel had squid to start and then sea bass. Absolutely delicious. Great service, just a lovely time really. We had our young Labrador, Billie, with us and she was made to feel very welcome in this lovely dog friendly environment. Over the next three days we sampled pretty much everything on the menu between us and always had a good meal. After dinner we stayed in the bar for a few drinks and chatted with the other guests, and it was at this point that we were introduced to the lady proprietor, Catkins (known generally as Chatkins due to her garrulous nature). Now Catkins is a real tour de force of a woman, a walking party machine that fills the room with her ebullient and effusive personality. She made us feel welcome and included, and I for one thoroughly enjoyed her company. Just don't tell her that your name is Kevin. Breakfast was a massive full English breakfast that kept me going all day and the staff always managed to find Billie a spare sausage, much to Billie's delight. Across from the Bedingfeld Arms is a old, partially ruined church, St Johns, which makes for an interesting explore and right next to the church, about a minutes walk from the pub is the National Trust property the Oxburgh Estate. A beautiful old house and grounds well worth an afternoon of anyone's time. It might have been us or maybe we just hit the pub at the right time, who knows, but we had a lovely stay. Thank you Andy, Terri (the lady with the Newfoundland) and the rest of the staff for making our stay so pleasant. And you Catkins, you are unforgettable.

Delicious food, excellent service, comfortable setting - thoroughly recommend. Being dairy free and having the Sunday roast adjusted to accommodate was appreciated. Servings a generous and we left a happy group. Throughly recommended and a must to reserve in advance.

This is a gem of an establishment, set in a beautiful village next to Oxborugh Hall. Andrew and the team gave a warm welcome and impeccable service. The room was clean and spacious, and very comfortable. The menu is extensive, portions are generous, and the food is of high quality. Breakfast is outstanding. Thoroughly recommended.

Excellent lunch, 2 roast dinners, 1 beef and 1 pork both served with a lovely selection of fresh seasonal veg and beautiful roast potatoes. Very well priced and a superb setting, only negative, Yorkshire pudding served with roast pork, really!

Having eaten here twice before deciding to use it as our base from which to attend our annual family reunion, we were happily surprised last year with the pretty, mildly quirky, full service restaurant, bar, hotel in this unlikely yet lovely, country-village setting. Last year we booked a room and dined here and the fact that we re-booked for this year should be tribute enough for last year's review. However, this will be our last visit to The Bedingfeld Arms - as diners and as overnight guests. Here is why so far....(we only checked 6 hours ago and have another 40 hours or so to go):The dinner: Four courses - all exceedingly amateur, some inedible. Cackling with applesauce was tough and sauce sickly sweet. Thai crab cakes had nice flavour but were so crumbly you could not dip them in the sauce and had to eat with spoon. Marinated mackerel with bilberry sauce came on top of a fresh but wilting green salad; should have been served without salad and with far less sauce. Local calves liver, onions and bacon main dish was extremely over-cooked (re: burnt). The bacon was actually inedible and liver so obviously burned on one side it was shocking it left the kitchen. Five of the desserts offered included ice cream and there was an ice cream 1, 2 or 3 scoop choice. We both fancied the 3 scoops only to be informed latterly that their freezer had broken down and there was no ice cream. The bottle of wine was nice. I think by now you get my drift. One poor plate might be excused. All of them being poor is way more than three strikes...The room: Well, with the exception of the fan on the bedside table not much has changed....and really, it needs to. There are considerable attributes or we would not have returned - nice size (Room 6 is their largest) with generous bathroom, comfy bed and some nice decorative features. But please owners, you must reinvest and refresh and stop with the stupid, supercilious fairy lights, cheap rattan drawers and leaf-shaped mirror pieces. Get rid of the cheap crap. Go to the local antique furniture shop and buy what is needed. Install a proper hanging rail or really go wild and create a proper wardrobe! And where the heck is the bath soap, bottled water, telephone?!! There is NO phone signal in the room!!! I am using a wifi signal but have no idea to whom it belongs....and that keeps dropping out!We are not impressed. We are actually seriously disappointed by the failure of the owners to deliver a proper product in the ding room and in the bedrooms. There is lovely potential here and it would not require a lot of investment to right the wrongs and bring the products up to a standard for which they could be proud. We hope they do. But for us, we will be sampling the competition next year.

Good menu selection and reasonable wines. Food was very well cooked and presented. Great value for money. Would recommend a visit. Wild trout was excellent.

We went for dinner on a Friday night whilst visiting the area and were pleased with the selection and quality of food and good service.

Having been to the restaurant previously and being subjected to very load swearing from the bar which was not discouraged by the 'real character' landlady so bit confused what type of clientele they are trying to encourage. This in all ended up spoiling our evening meal but we thought that maybe things would be better for a lunch as the restaurant is situated in a beautiful area of Norfolk and near to some of our family live so we arranged for our family (nine in total) to have luncn together after burying our Mother's ashes. We arrived and had a drink, then sat for 45 minutes until our order was taken. Then we were ushered into the dining room and eventually eight starters arrived so we waited but it took so long so we told everyone to start and the starter arrived when everyone had finished! Then the main course arrived and another persons meal arrive late. The food was OK but the portions were so small e.g. four miniscule prawns as a starter!) The service was very slow. When a member of staff was asked a question about the food they had no idea (why don't restaurants ensure the staff have been trained, tried the food and know the ingredients etc. - good practice?). So sorry but the whole family will not be frequenting this establishment again.

My wife & I visited this establishment on 19th September, we found the female staff to be very pleasant. We ordered one rib eyesteak medium rare £17.95. My wife had the pork which came with sweet potatoe wedges which she enjoyed. My tomatoes were a bit overcooked and the steak was a bit overcooked as were the mushrooms. My wifes meal cost £13.95.The toilets were clean and tidy, no hand drier only a cloth towel.I would come again if in the area.

We stayed here for 4 nights in September 2013 and ate in the restaurant twice from the bar menu. Both times, the service was fast and the food excellent. The staff were really friendly which made our visit all the more special.

Worth a visit with the landlady mixing and joining customers in the bar, a real character to be reckoned with, nice fun

Looked great to arrive at, Sunday lunch time. Ordered the set lunch x2 (1 the last beef)and 1 starter. 45 mins, two beers and no food. Then starter, another wait and 2 plates of only just warm, but old looking dinner. Should have stopped then, but hungry! Stopped half way as veg actually cold. They gave us one meal for free, but I now wish I had complained and not paid at all. Spoilt a good day out.
