Beach Retreat Fish and Chips in Hastings

Absolutely delicious. Fried in beef dripping.

The staff couldn't have been more friendly and it was nice sat outside in the good weather. Went there for breakfast, not the best ever if I'm being honest but nothing to complain about either.

Breakfast is poor VFM. I shared this photo with friends in a closed fb group and they reckon it was a rip off. The breakfast would've been allright if it had been around £7.50 to £8, but not worth £12.15, even with a 'seaside premium'! Plenty of parking in the area (on Easter week, early April 2024), but it needs to be paid for, whether on street or in a carpark.

Lovely tidy little restaurant with seating indoors, and fish & chips counter outside. Freshly cooked scampi & chips was spot on. Also serves sandwiches and baked potatoes etc indoors.

Great choice of ice cream and really good service

Cannot fault this little place to eat. Food is fab, the atmosphere is fab and I live that they welcome the dogs. The staff were friendly. Highly recommended the afternoon tea and fish and chips

On a cold remembrance Sunday we were delighted that we could order Fish and Chips from the takeaway window and then eat them inside the comfortable cafe attached, where we had a pot of Tea and an Americano alongside a shared large Haddock, Chips and some Battered Chicken pieces just £20 all in. Hastings is blessed with many great places to eat Fish and Chips but this is our favourite right now - they even do Battered Smoked Haddock but wasn't available on this occasion. The batter is the tastiest around, and the Fish such thick chunks, the whole Crazy Golf compilation of businesses is such a well run affair and spotlessly clean

Had some excellent chips from this place. Made better with onion vinegar on top. Also the adjacent cafe that is part of the same premises does a mean whippy 99 ice cream. I had an XL ice cream with the fancy cone and it was bang on.

Great cod and chips! The batter was crispy and tasty without being oily and the fish was moist and tender, cooked perfectly. The chips were well seasoned and the service was great. Recommended for a cheeky take away to eat by the beach ⛱️

Fantastic, I’d walked past this shack a few times and every time I walked past I said they smell so good. The look of the shack is not somewhere I think would serve quality fish and chips, I wouldn’t normally stop somewhere like this,just reminds me of a fair ground stall, how wrong was I. Went back later in the day, served by extra polite staff, ordered 2x fish and chips 2x cod bites and chips mushy peas and a saveloy for the 7 year old saveloy critic. Was given a pager and told would be 10minutes, pager buzzed and we went to collect, everything we had was fresh and cooked to perfection the fish batter was so crispy, the fish was lily white, everyone tucked in and said how good it was 👏👏 We even passed on the recommendation to a family we met at the crazy golf! Keep doing what your doing and we will be sure to visit when we are back in Hastings 🤍

On a visit to Hastings we wanted to have the typical norm, Fish & Chips. We went to the Beach Retreat as its close by the beach and sea. Trip advisor rated it highly but ours wasn't. It was awful. We went to the beach to eat ours but it was that bad I would have been ashamed to give it to the gulls. The mushy peas tasted dreadful, old and stale and the fish was VERY, Very small and so over cooked it was rock hard. The chips were passable but so under seasoned. I wont be going back. My advise is to go somewhere else even if it costs a little more.

A friendly place for fish and chips. The portions of chips maybe a little small but the fish is a good size and ten pounds is a very reasonable price. The outside tables are clean and the staff are always outside sweeping up. Its always busy but worth the short wait for the food

Came here again for food before seafront holiday activities. We had fish and chips last time but had breakfasts today. The food and service was excellent and great value too. Highly recommend…perfect!

Long queue (as everywhere due to May Day Bank Holiday) but efficient service and worth waiting for. Delighted that the chips are fried in beef dripping and that they do gravy. Made this Northerner very happy. Best chips in Hastings (I didn't have fish this time) and possibly south of Birmingham!

Despite having dozens of chip shops in Hastings this is the only place that cooks them in beef dripping (that I know of) - the result is hands down the best fish and chips you’ll get in the area, by a mile!

This is the best place to get your fish and chips. I’ve always moaned about the fish and chips in hastings , to me they always had a weird after taste left from the oil they had been cooked in. At last though I’ve found a fish and chip shop that cooks in beef dripping ( my home town in Suffolk every fish and chip shop cooked with dripping) , gosh they taste amazing. It’s turned into a weekly visit for us now.

I stopped here 11/2/23 been before had great service fantastic experience before yesterday I wasn’t let down still great service they have had a very nice refit done from my last visit and it’s fantastic what they have done is great love the ceiling they have done nice touch so if you find your self in Hastings go check this little gem of a place on Hastings seafront by the crazy golf great place for a hot drink and a cake or maybe try there fish and chips kids wellcome love me cheeky in Kent glen 100/100 stars

I told my girlfriend I fancied fish and chips, but I wanted them in beef dripping, couldn’t find a place until I stumbled across Beach Retreat on Google, only F&C that cooks them in beef dripping, the traditional way, so my mrs took a trip down to get the family fish and chips for dinner and it was the best fish and chips I’ve had in 15 years or more. The beef dripping wasn’t overpowering so you could still taste the fluffy potato, the chips were crisp as well, brilliant with a bit of salt and vinegar, the cod was delicious with a crispy, but light gorgeous batter, it was fantastic, and I was delighted with the little lemon wedge, that was fantastic, no one else does that here, or at least the places I’ve been to! The family will definitely be visiting again soon for another great takeaway!

Was told to try the homemade fish cake instead of the normal one by the cashier. Collected it & it was a ball of greasy batter. Inside was runny sauce, hardly any fish & what there was looked pink. 2 small bits of potato no flavour. Was told it was fish & red onion. No onion in it just cold sauce. Very disappointed after reading all the other reviews.

We stopped for a coffee and the staff were very nice and helpful. We asked about other cold drinks and a lady recommended some ice cream shakes which were delicious. A fabulous place with lovely staff. Excellent!

A lovely cafe, amazing homemade ice cream and the friendliest staff in Hastings, will definitely be returning! The chip shop is the best in Hastings, without a doubt.

I am from Yorkshire where everyone knows everything about everything, especially concerning fish and chips, and cannot imagine that someone from down south could possibly run a half decent "fish oyle". I am a regular visitor to Hastings and have given less than complimentary reviews about highly rated fish shops here. However I have been to this unassuming place a few times and every time the quality has been fantastic and up there with the best from the Yorkshire coast. Easily the best in town that I have had so far.

Fantastic quality, piping hot and utterly delicious. Still my favourite eating place on a visit to Hastings. It will take somewhere very special to beat this place.

Probably the one of the best fish and chips I have ever had. You’d never expect it from a little hut as part of the golf course. Simple ordering system, really fresh and crispy food. Worth the visit every time we come to Hastings!

Amazing fish and chips here, honestly nothing better when you are right by the seaside. Given the amount of customers here during the summer, they manage the staff and food times really well. Would 100% reccomend coming here if you are in the area

Really love this cafe you can order your fish and chips then just collect it from the outside bar when it's ready a good choise of sandwiches and cakes and a lovely cuppa to wash it all down. But best of all we can take our furry friends in so please if your in hastings give it a try you won't be sorry

A really nice place, looked at lots of other places across the road but those looked dirty. This place was clean, bright, good food at reasonable prices, all presented by very polite and friendly staff

These fish and chips are the best I have had for years and years, in fact not since my childhood in Yorkshire have I had such excellent fish and chips. And the reason is that they use beef dripping to cook them in so they are SO crispy, and SO tasty. Yum yum yum!

Really lovely fish and chips, all cooked fresh, the pies are also very tasty, they do not sell teas but the two shops either side of them do, the prices are very reasonable too. Its one of my favourite Fish and Chip shops in Hastings.

Have used this place twice and actually came from eastbourne to have fish and chips here. Cannot recommend this enough the fish and chip are fresh and cooked to perfection.Will be using it again next visit, Its next to the Crazy Golf and the side of the road with the beach.

Visited Hastings for the first time, and spotted this fish & chip unit with cafe next door. And was so impressed with service, and the freshness & tasty fish and chips. Very nice chips and a generous portion. We only asked for medium size but there was plenty for us. Very pleasant sat outside but you had the choice to sit indoors too. The lady that served us was extremely pleasant and very efficient.

Expensive for the area, but pretty decent. Chips were good, fish was a decent size and taste good. Was served fresh, so was too hot to eat for a while, and I burned my mouth. Also took a long time to come, despite it being quiet. Fish is local apparently, which is good to know. Would go back, but will continue my search for the perfect Hastings chippy.

WOW! What can I say. Initially I was disappointed as they had run out of Huss/rock which is my usual go to for fish and chips. I settled for some plaice and was definitely not disappointed, in fact I was impressed. The fact they use traditional methods of frying in dripping really shows, takes me back to fish and chips with my Nan when I was a "wee boy". Juicy white fish, crispy thin batter, crispy tasty chips . This is what a traditional fish and chips at the seaside is all about. Fantastic work. Bonus points for the tartare sauce, topped it off a treat.

I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The chips were soggy, the fish was covered in very thick oily batter, some of it hard. It made us feel sick and we threw most of it away. Thank you very much for responding to my review. We didn't mention to the staff as we had already moved on. Hopefully it was a one off and we will be back to try again!

Quite honestly the best fish and chips I've ever had, staff are really friendly and helpful and I was impressed by the use of recyclable materials rather than plastic.

Hands down, the best fish and chips I've ever eaten. The owners/managers spend a lot of time sourcing the right produce/ingredients for their food, and it certainly shows in the flavour. Will definitely be returning to Hastings again for more!

A few friends were visiting Hastings for the day so I had to take them here for lunch, it is the best chip shop I have ever been to. The fish is cooked perfectly in a lovely crispy batter and the chips are simply the best. We all had fish and chips, 2 cod, 2 haddock and 1 smoked haddock everyone was in agreement that it was the best fish and chips ever. Lovely to sit outside in the sun and the service we received was fantastic from Stevie helping our group decide what fish to have and answering our questions. We will be back very soon.

My daughter loves the "fish bites" which come as small (with 4 fish bites) or regular (6 fish bites). I love it because my daughter chooses fish rather than the sausage she eats everywhere else.

Amazing fish and chips, widely known as one of the best in Hastings, the place is always busy which tells you it’s good, but they have a buzzer system that buzzes once your food is ready to get from the counter. Super delicious crispy batter with soft white fish inside, great strong chips, you won’t be disappointed, bang on!!!

Happened upon this place a while ago when having a wander in Hastings, I had haddock and chips sitting outside in the sun, and it was quite simply, outstanding.
