Bay horse in Burnley

November 2024 The first couple of things to say are that the service we received at The Bay Horse was perfect. We went to celebrate a birthday. The lady behind the bar and the young man and girl who served us couldn't have done more for us and they were really lovely, pleasant, polite and helpful. The second thing to add is that all of the food was absolutely outstanding in terms of flavours, colours, tenderness etc. The one thing however which let the whole meal down completely was the amount of food we were served bearing in mind this was marketed as a Lancashire Sunday Roast. It was not a tasting menu and we were five adults and two children. The starters whilst delicious were literally miniscule. I had three 6 foot 2 chaps in the party who just looked at their plates in shock. One - okay at a pinch - maybe two small bites and it was gone. Never seen a starter or even a tasting menu offering so small. Those who had the three roasts in a large Yorkshire paid an additional £5 supplement. There wasn't enough meat there for the basic roast offering never mind the three meats together plus the £5 supplement. The chicken bits (not slices) would have fitted onto a dessert spoon. The gammon was wafer thin and small as was the beef. The 'supplement' serving of meat would not have been sufficient for the roast choice 'without the supplement'. There is nothing to fault about the actual taste of the food at all - it is really superb, but the portion sizes in particular for the starters, the mains and some desserts are just taking the Mickey. The Lemon Tiramisu for instance was 'blow you away' stuff apparently. Really wonderful - but so tiny. I couldn't rate this meal as poor, it would be unfair to the chef (who is clearly talented and probably not in charge of the profit margins) but it was very disappointing for the reasons stated. Why are vegetables so often served in such microscopic amounts? Ours (also microscopic) were part of the main at this pub and hidden in the Yorkshire, but so many times as an additional side they come in a tiny pot looking grey, miserable and lack lustre with a price tag of £3 - £5! All the food for each person who had ordered the three meat roast (with the £5 supplement) was heaped inside the Large Yorkshire and without exaggeration, much of it must have been put on with a teaspoon. We spent plenty on drinks so we weren't parsimonious customers nor are we greedy. For such a 'little bit more' on the plate, so much more would have been achieved for our family and the pub because we would have returned again and again and recommended it to others for food like that. No-one wanted their plates to be heaped high. NB - They did produce three additional albeit small slices of beef when one of our party mentioned it. Food Taste & Presentation 10/10 - Service 10/10 - Portion Sizes - (in part) - Ridiculous. We are happy to support local businesses and spend our hard earned money with them, but if pubs and restaurants want to fill their tables, they have to send people home reasonably full in our opinion, especially when they are spending so much money in addition on drinks. £9.50 for one glass of wine!

We came here for a Sunday roast and all really enjoyed it. I had the beef brisket potato cake to start which was so nice. Followed by the roast chicken which was beautiful. My partner had the chicken to start and roast beef and really enjoyed his too. There was also some live music which was a nice touch. Service was really good too. We’ve just moved to the area but will definetely be making this one of our regular haunts!

Visited with 6 friends and had the mid-week special menu. It was delicious, everyone one of us thought the food was delicious and well presented. Good choice from all 3 courses and unbelievably great value for the quality of food we had. Also staff very friendly and inviting. Will definitely visit again. Thank you

We had an excellent lunch which was well served all at the same time We chose various meals from the menu and were very happy with all our choices Compiments to the Chef and all who support him We will be back again soon

Lovely pub but terrible food and service. Only had sandwiches and chips but the bread was so hard it wasn't edible and the chips were uncooked. For the price, a complete rip off. Very grumpy rude girl on the bar. Shame, as the pub itself is nice. Definitely won't be returning!

We visited the Bay Horse this week. The menu had changed since our previous visit and was no way near as inviting . First of all the service was appalling we waited 40 minutes for our food and had to go and enquire about it. My food was not edible , I had noodles . It can only be described as noodles in water , which was £22 !! My husband had fish and chips, the fish did not taste fresh and the chips were rock hard . So we will not be returning to the Bay Horse, we will stick with the fabulous Palazzo. Friends who ate at the Bay Horse earlier the same day will not return there for food either. It is unfortunate because the building is ideal.

Absolutely amazing food at the bay. Lovely staff and a great environment. The swordfish was so good!!! 11/10 so so happy to have this place on our doorstep!

This was my first time visiting, after seeing all the delicious photos on Facebook I thought we’d have a treat when my mother in law came up from south Wales. The pub is lovely and the staff were attentive. However, when we looked at the menu we were very disappointed. My mother in law is a vegetarian and there were only 2 options on the menu. One being aubergine which you need an acquired taste for. I have to admit, we were seriously disappointed in the lack of vegetarian options on offer. In this day and age, so many people are vegetarians and to cater to the general public, you need to be offering more selections. I had the seafood pasta and this was delicious. My husband had the steak burger, he said it was nice but it was just slapped in the plate, had no garnish/extras, this was disappointing especially for the price!! We all had dessert and although they were lovely, my husband really wanted the bread and butter pudding as he had seen it on Facebook, all dressed lovely with fruit. However, when it came it was the pudding in a sea of custard, no fruit or anything. This was also disappointing. Overall, I was gutted my experience wasn’t how I imagined it. My mother in law was excited to go out as it was our first meal out without my baby and it was also to celebrate my birthday. Unfortunately, we won’t be back.

Held our daughters birthday party in the private Function Room this weekend. The hot buffet was absolutely spot on and enjoyed by everyone. This included: Crispy Chicken Drumsticks, Burgers, Breaded Goats Cheese, Mozzarella Sticks. Honey and Mustard Sausages and Fries. Followed by amazing tasting Brownies 😋 Definitely recommend

Good food, presentation and service. The vegetarian dishes were different and excellent. Would definitely return.

Been here before,lovely,hence our return visit after a rainy 8 mile walk.Our curry parsnip pie tasted of nothing,burnt potatoes on top.Tiny ramekin of 2 Chanenay carrots and 2 🥬 leavesShoulder of land came sliced in ramekin,left more than ate.Beef ghoulash was bland and everything was furnace hot!the sweetcorn soup was lovely.2 pints a mineral waster and a half was £100 for 4 people.Wont return wish we’d got a Chinese take away.Just changed hands get a chef.

We come here quite a lot, always been super impressed and it’s a nice ‘posh pub’ but recently I just think it’s gone completely down hill. We keep giving the benefit on the doubt and returning hoping it’s a one off but there is always something wrong with our visit. We visit a lot because it’s dog friendly, today I asked if I could have 2 sausages for the dog (which they always do and always have done in the past) in which they said they could only give me chipolatas which were £7 for 7? I asked if they could just give me 2 or 3 and they said no. The past 2 times we’ve had to ask for someone to come and take our food order because we’ve been sat waiting so long and there’s always at least something unavailable every visit. It’s such a shame because there is so much potential but the service is poor and prices are expensive for the portion size you get.

Came for a meal with the family which was absolutely fantastic along with the new management! No complaints and will definitely be returning 😊

Enjoyed lovely food from the mid week menu on a Thursday evening. Everything was well cooked and hot and the service was great. Staff were friendly and attentive, we will definitely go again.

Unfortunately the food here had got progressively worse since it reopened but it seems to have a new menu, chef and management now. I’ve been twice this week and both times it was excellent. Glad to see this pub turn a corner.

The welcome was great to us 3 and 2 dogs. Bit overloud music, the waiter couldn't hear us in an empty pub! We asked for it to be turned down a bit, but this didn't happen. We had booked and the pub was empty just us at 30 mins after opening time. We sat near the window, close to the kitchen, don't choose this as the smells and sounds are very off-putting. Food choices , the first was unavailable, then the second choice was unavailable. Later a dessert choice was unavailable. From 6 courses, 50% were not available. The waiter didn't seem to know much, said it was his first day, but no support was available to him for these issues. He also kept addressing the ladies as "love" - not the most professional. The food quality when the dish was available was good, not special but acceptable. We won't return in a hurry.

Visited here for dinner, awful experience, ordered drinks, took 20mins to arrive, food order was taken, we waited 50 mins for our food to arrive, very disappointing, I ordered the gammon with egg, the gammon wasn’t cooked , my egg came 5 mins later, sent gammon back , they said they’d cook another but I didn’t want to wait another 50 mins for a meal when the other people would of finished there’s, we ordered another set of drinks, one had to be sent back 3 times before it was right, we were sat near the kitchen, the chef couldn’t cope so the manager stepped in, the way she spoke to her staff was appalling, needless to say we won’t be visiting again

Visited Monday lunchtime with wife and son my son ordered fish and chips though it was good and my wife ordered from the small plate menu Chicken burger and fries I ordered the same from the full menu. On arrival I could hardly notice any difference in fact my wife had more fries there was of course a difference £6 I know eateries say times are tough but its tough for the working man to fund £50 for lunch and leave feeling disappointed eating out is just not worth it

Lovely meal and lovely service. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. Was a very chilled relaxing meal. Not too busy either. Definitely be back again. Chocolate fudge cake was amazing too

I visited with family. I’m not sure why there isn’t an option to select this aside from the selection ‘family (teens)… Not one to write reviews or complain however, I felt this was needed. I visited here last minute on Monday lunch time around 1.30pm with my mother, niece and her 1 year old for a quick lunch as the place we were wanting to visit wasn’t serving food that day. The place looked nice visually and wasn’t very busy so we thought this was perfect due to my niece having work soon after our lunch date. We were seated right at the side of the kitchen - where there is a large open hatch where the food is put for the waiting staff to deliver it to the tables and ordered a drink each which was a white wine spritzer, pint of fruit cider and a pint of lager. These didn’t take too long to arrive. The bar staff/waiting staff were pleasant enough however, during our visit we witnessed the chef portray some disgusting and less than satisfactory behaviour. The ladies sat at the table behind us got their food after we had been seated for around 20 minutes. One lady sent her food back due to the small portion she received for the price. I believe this was a chicken burger with ‘a slither of bacon’ in her words to the staff. Once this was taken back to the kitchen, the chef then shouted “oh ffs” rather loudly leading us all to look at each other in pure shock… We were sat there for 50 minutes before our food arrived which was 2 fish and chips and the cheese burger with fries. The wait seemed very long for the amount of people dining. The fish looked nice however, it was sat on a very small portion of chunky chips which were pretty cold (cold enough to give to the just gone 1 year old to eat right away). The ‘mushy peas’ that came with it in a tiny dish were just garden peas that were mashed a few times with a fork and mixed with something that gave them a strange flavour. My fries that came with my burger were hot and probably the best thing on the table. My burger however, was stone cold. I had one bite and it was as if it had been sat on the side for an hour. The cheese was stuck to the burger - like it had been made a while before and just left out. I took the burger off the bun and all the table felt how cold it was. It had minimal salad and a kind of relish that was a very strange flavour. I called over the waitress who was pleasant and couldn’t apologise enough - I sent it back to the kitchen due to the burger being cold, to then hear the chef say “well it’s not going to be hot is it with a cold salad on it.” Wow. Just no words! None. When the waitress came out I called her over again and asked if the chef was talking to us when he shouted the above. She said she wasn’t sure and apologised again. I told her to just remove the meal from the bill as I wasn’t prepared to wait another 45 minutes or so for another as we needed to leave. When paying the bill at the bar the staff again couldn’t apologise enough and assured us that the chefs behaviour had been noted and it wasn’t the first time. The also stated it will be passed on to the Manager. Really disappointed with our visit. I’d maybe visit for a drink in the summer if I was over that way but I doubt I’d ever eat here again.

Lovely meal at lunchtime,very quiet but it was a Monday.Firstclass service. They have listened and are now back doing mushy peas with fish and chips. Good meal deal .

When we arrived for mid week lunch the restaurant was empty but it soon started to get busy. We ordered our drinks which took a long time to arrive, when they did arrive the latte glasses were only partially full. Apparently, this was a normal serving size. We soon ordered our meals, but were told there was no cheese and onion pie as it had sold out 2 days earlier!!! (So we wondered why they couldn't make more over the 2 days). Then we waited and waited for 45 minutes for the orders to arrive. By now the restaurant was busy and there were only 2 servers so they were run off their feet. The bar area was a mess, empty bottles and dirty glasses everywhere. The fish and chips for 2 of our party was very greasy and not nice to eat. The steak ciabatta for a further party member was delicious. Very disappointed with our visit but more waiting staff would probably be a good idea to take the pressure off the staff a little bit.

Lovely pub good food friendly staff but can't believe they charged £3.80 for a glass of lemonade and lime!!!! Would have been 5 out of 5. Such a shame they need to charge such a ridiculous price for a soft drink.

Been to the Bay about 4 times now, and I have to say I haven't had a bad meal yet.Amy and her team are always attentive and the Chefs are great too always asking if everything is ok. Looking forward to our family Christmas meal there.Just goes to show you just can't please everyone which is sad.

We visited the bay horse on the first night of opening, it was very busy, but it did not faze the staff one bit, they were all very friendly and professional, the food was outstanding, we will definitely be going back.

A superb newly refurbished pub in a lovely quaint village. The food was amazing and we would highly recommend the Belly Pork and Lamb Rump, however we did have food envy for the Fish and Chips and Gammon so will need to visit again soon to sample more of the menu. The hosts and all the staff are very welcoming, friendly and attentive. Spotlessly clean throughout.

Well kept but limited selection of cask ales, slow service and little effort put into the meals. For instance no side salad & undercooked fatty sausages.

We had a family get together here on Sunday 24th Sept. The pub has undergone a refurbishment and is really nice inside especially the bar.The landlord was friendly and kept the drinks coming all evening It was a great venue / time to have a drink and catch up. There is a room with a pool table and although we didn't eat here we did see others eating and the food looked good. Will definitely be returning

Visité aquí la otra noche, situado para Cumberland salchichas (x3) y puré. Esperamos una hora para ser servido.! (ni disculpas) había un puñado de clientes en el lugar. pésimo servicio, y cuando llegamos estaba daba con la peor comida procesada visto. La salchicha, 2 de ellos eran muy frito! ¿Qué es esto? El microondas técnico intentó disimular el hecho de que 2 salchichas cortadas en 800 = 4 mitades en un intento de conseguir que había más salchichas lo que decía en el menú.Muy, muy mala comida en lo que podría ser un muy popular pub.
