The Star in Burnley

It wasn’t a great experience because I got kicked out for entering the pool area when I was underage but I didn’t see why we couldn’t play pool but some guy shouted at me for it but in my opinion what is more dangerous , drinking alcohol or playing pool?

Went today food great. Will miss it when it closes.😕

The food was really horrible the staff wat actually a pooling, the young girl started with her mouth all because I asked her to stop pointing at my granddaughter, they stood behind bar trued to intimide us all,, I currently have mental health issues and can't not stand people stood there watching me eat and talk about me,, first there was 3 off then it ended up with about 6 people never ever will I come here again all food went to waste

Dire ! Had a carvery here only Turkey available which was drier than the Gobi desert staff look like they rather be in the park drinking Stella and smoking weed

In the area for 1 day, came off the train and immediately saw “The Star” - I went in and immediately greeted by a bartender, but unfortunately, this was the only positive. Equally as immediate was the rampage of one group of children tearing through the restaurant, staff look fed up with the family but hadn’t asked them to leave, apparently they had been there for hours. I understand that this is a family welcomed pub, but screaming, running up and down the restaurant, playing with the barriers, popping balloons and just with absolutely no parental control, the decision for them to stay was poor. I ordered a carvery and it was the most disgusting carvery I have ever had, I ate 2-3 items and decided it was time to leave, having been in the restaurant less than 20 minutes. Again, staff welcomed me immediately, this was the only positive for this location.

There was rats running around the car park and in the kitchen I got a glance of the kitchen it was like ratatouille if I could rate 0.5 stars I would also the staff was VERY unhelpful

Ordered a Standard Carvery for 3 people. Was first told no Yorkshire Puddings, then later got half cooked ones, No Gammon, then some arrived, Burnt rock hard Roasties, was told there was were no more, and in general, food was barely edible. Other meals was also hard to accommodate. Been to this restaurant many, many times before, but NEVER had food as bad as this. Was offered a refund, about the best they could do under the circumstances.

Me and the hubby went for tes tonight ordered the ultimate grill and uve got to say very disappointed the steak was small the sausages was horrible and chicken dry chips where vile and his peppercorn sauce was cold and split and they didnt put his onion rings on which wouldnt of made a differwnce anyway and I got lasagne and it was dry and burnt and I ordered fries as well and they where that well done they was hard as anything so all in was an absolut waste of money and will deffo not go there again ever

Pub tea & quiz! Friendly staff, reasonably priced food.

Ordered steak for me and husband each with dropping sauce. Was very good and cooked the steak to perfection. Daughter ordered the loaded chips and enjoyed it also followed by the rocky road cake Great staff, friendly and service was impressive. Place was clean and tidy, staff did not stop cleaning and serving. Great value for money,I would of paid more for the food it was restaurant standards. Thank you to the staff and chef for your service

Few games of pool and more than a.fewbeers while watching the football , reasonable prices and a good selection of beers and loads of spirits , staff very friendly and helpful only downfall eas the football result

Been here once before and was OK. Today ordered 2 small starters , waited 35 minutes and place was empty . Lots of staff just stood around . One walking into kitchen with long hair all over the place The food was average. Then waited 45 minutes for mains . Haloumi salad, salad consisted of 3 lettuce leaves! Both asked for jacket spuds with beans , only one had beans! Won't be coming again

cold chips. onion rings are the mush stuff out of freezer bag, dry bun for burger. wife had a rare / medium steak after asking for very well done. worst quality steak iv ever had. and im 53 and eat out all the time. seriously the worst. cheese sauce was brill. Overall score 3 out of 10

Nice pub, friendly staff, but the carvery isn't the best. We went at lunch time and the vegetables were dry and looked like they'd been sat there for ages. If you're after a carvery I wouldn't recommend. The food that's cooked to order is better because its fresher.

We had the carvery which was very disappointing,whilst we was waiting there was someone from the kitchen who was stood at the food bar turning the food under the hot lights so as to not looked dried out .what happened next shocked me he was stirring the mashed potato and the utensil he was using snapped and the handle and debris went all over,instead of him removing the mashed potato he left it there which immediately put me off as debris could have easily been in the food and should have been disposed of immediately. The server who came to serve us the meat was completely unfriendly just said what do you want and plonked a Yorkshire pudding on the plate without asking if I wanted one. I obviously did not take the mash for previous stated reasons. The food was ok at best the Yorkshire pudding was hard and tasted like cardboard and had clearly been under the lights a long time . I was disappointed in the whole experience if I am honest I don’t like to give bad reviews but any review I give is honest and always accurate. I do not think this place will be on my list to visit again any time soon

The pub is great, super nice staff. We come every Tuesday for the quiz, it's always a lot of fun and the host is cool. Go team!!

Came for a carvery, ate myself into a coma, stayed for a quiz and now I'm invested. Long story short I'm here for the points but the food was great.

Ordered the pie with mash for yhe wife and it was horrible. The gravy was the most likely culprit and it made the food taste of soap. She left most of it. I had the double burger and enjoyed it. Told the manager that pie was horrible znd he just shrugged. Not impressed and won't be back

Was in this pub due to a cancelled train and i have never seen such provoking and power tripping in a while. We witnessed a male server attempting to deliver 2 pints of beer to a table in ear shot of us. The server decided he wanted to be difficult and asked them for I.D, which was ridiculous since they were visibly old enough, plus they took their order and payment at the bar with no issue. One of the gentlemen did not have I.D on him so the server took the beer away and was gloating. Justifiably the patron wanted someone to explain this bizarre situation and asked another member of staff why take my order and then for another member of staff to refuse to deliver it to me. She played "the tape" and said if you look under 25 then we have the right to ask you for I.D. He rightly pointed out to her that you have to be over 18 to buy alcohol and as you saying i look younger than 18. She said i know you are over 18 but looking over 25 is arbitory so that is why you are not being served alcohol (even though they already sold it to him). The manager really needs to educate the staff as this is the most messed up logic i have heard in a while. We commend the way these 2 patrons handled this situation, which is more than can be said to the male server that felt he needed to mess someones day up and attempt to cause an issue. On top of that they said he also would have to wait up to 5 days for his refund. I would of cancelled the whole food and drinks order and demanded a full refund in cash and left. We will not attend this place again out of principal of what is right. In addition the glasses our drinks were served in were filthy!!!

Went for family tea, Starters was burnt , went back hardly touched! Mains arrived 1 hour later ! Wasn't ti much to shout about, the garlic bread was burnt , chips over cooked. Best thing about this place was leaving

Came with family spent £70 on food and drink. The starters was absolutely shocking and burnt. The mains are nothing to shout about. Won't be coming back here again any time soon.

Fantastic Carvery as always lovely food amazing value and brilliant service

Food is very nice I have been several times with family very accessible kid friendly bar atmosphere reason for three stars on service is where is no table service other than that if you're happy to go up an order your meal I would highly recommend. Has a very reasonable price unless you want to get drunk.

We have been to this pub in the past a number of times and it has always been okay , it seemed to be the manager who took our order at the bar who seemed very pleasant and helpful , as we went for our carveries we asked if we could have one of the meals blended as one of our party has a medical issue swallowing ( this was the main reason we went to the star as in the past it hasn't been an issue) upon asking the chef who was serving us he appeared to tut and seemed like we were putting him out ! He did accommodate us with the blended meal but the vegetables that we had a choice of for our carvery .... Cauliflower was like mush, carrots were dry and there was half an inch of oil in the bottom of the serving dish, the masala potatoes were fatty and burnt and the gammon that I got was 80% soft fat which I ended up tipping all the meat into a serviette. My colleague had ordered the cheese pie as the Pastry was so hard he ended up scraping out the middle and leaving the Pastry. What a disappointment! I have given this eating establishment 4/5 star review in the past on a couple of occasions and I'm not sure if they have changed chefs or something but it was shocking! No real atmosphere due to hardly any customers being in . What a shame hence we will not be visiting again.

Was ok, food was over cooked, but service was good, place itself was clean, would go again but maybe order from menu rather than carvery as that looked much better

Last Saturday we went for food .sat near pool table .across from us there was two girls and a lad who appeared to be proper leathered they was well loud and knocking shots back .loud as then they started so I went to bar and asked a staff member to please tell them to be quiet .several minutes later the manager appeared came over to us not them and started shouting an we left . Absolutely fuming will not return there ever again his attitude was shocking .

If you are an adult that has a child with any additional needs where they want/need you to come play, don't waste you money coming here. Having a child on the autistic spectrum and told that you are not allowed to be with them. Sometimes children struggle with other children and need an adult. For me this was a waste of money as my child always has me to come with him not been a problem before until today! I will find somewhere that will accommodate for children with additional needs. Seems to have gone down hill with the new management/new staff! --Edit-- This has never been an issue until new management came in and made all the changes! If a parent has a child with any additional needs they should be allowed to be with them so they can have enjoyment too. If you have a child should I tell I paid x amount to come in but because you have this additional need you cant play on the upper floor because we are not allowed to assist you! Its not an issue in other play areas I have taken my children to.

Literally the worst food I have ever eaten , stay well clear of this place

A break from the cold outside, the pub was warm and inviting. I had a carvery and the meat was cooked just right. The best roast potatoes I've had in a long time. Definitely recommend

Was treating my son and his girlfriend to a carvery, Sunday... The best part of our meal was the meat... Mash potatoes very dry ... The stuffing, I had to scrape off the spoon ... Gravey too thick and not pour able... People complaining behind me that food is running out ... Won't be going there again anytime soon.

Went for a carvery with my wife at about 6pm on Sunday afternoon. We'd originally gone to Sycamore Farm, who had no tables and people waiting. The car park was pretty empty, which should have been a red flag. We went inside and it wasn't busy. My wife went to get drinks and came back with a pint of IPA in a plastic cup. Apparently, they're not allowed to sell it in glass as it was a match day. The football had finished some hours previous, and there were no fans in. We'd ordered 2 carveries so went and joined the queue. Looking at the vegetables was depressing. My wife had ordered me 2 pigs in blankets. These were the cheapest sausages known to man with the thinnest strip of bacon wrapped round. The turkey just tasted of water. The beef was tasteless. Brussels sprouts were grey. The parsnips, what were left were dried up and crispy. Broccoli had just turned to mush. My wife and I shared what was left as the cauliflower cheese. The roast potatoes tasted like frozen ones. Again, we shared the last of the gravy. The best part of the meal was the mashed potato. When the last person in the queue had been served, they came out with fresh veg and gravy. Why they didn't keep an eye on things and stock up when it was low is beyond me. What an absolute disgrace of a meal.

Food was over priced for what you got, we got 2 children’s meals (sausage mash and peas) sausage’s were cold also they was that hard we couldn’t cut them with cutlery and my son nearly choked because he couldn’t chew it… mash was hard we also got the new cheese burger the bread was that hard I thought it was stale! Shocking experience will not order off the menu again! Carvery was amazing staff in the wakey ware house was fab, the manager to the restaurant was rude. Overall worse experience I have had in a restaurant.

Visited on a busy Saturday and one again everything was perfect! All the staff are friendly helpful and although it was busy we were served quickly and efficiently at the bar. We all opted for the carvery as it looked amazing as always, and we was served by our favourite carvery chef Pete, he always makes time for a bit of friendly banter about the football and makes sure we have everything we need , give this guy a PAYRISE, no he didnt ask ne to write that honestly 😀 keep up the good work guys 👌👏

We were in the wacky warehouse so food came from the main pub. Food was in expensive but was the price you paid for. Nothing special but also tasted good

Visited the Star in Burnley today with my wife, 2 grandchildren and their friend so they could have lunch and play in the Wacky Warehouse. We received a friendly greeting and paid to enter the play area, given their were 5 of us, all tables were set at 4 so I asked for a chair to be added to our table to be told no chairs or tables could be moved, due to fire risk assessment, despite high chairs being added to other tables, never heard anything as ridiculous!!! at online would we have impeded any exits or movement in the play area….go and have a look at your plans as we will certainly not be back with such stupid rules…how to lose custom you need in this challenging time.

Got one star for parking . The food was disgusting, service abysmal, no atmosphere, mainly due to the roadworks.

Always a very friendly welcome, and perfect for a proper breakfast before you head off on the train from Burnley, Manchester Road. Highly recommended.

Service was fine. Nothing special. Food was terrible. Ordered an all day breakfast which I understand can be greasy but my plate was literally swimming in grease. Bacon and sausage felt microwaved. Went into wacky wear house after and absolute disaster of a play area, never been somewhere so dirty.

Used to come often for the play area then food but last few times we’ve been the food hasn’t been nice at all. Most recent visit we got mixed grills, which we sent back as the meat was cold and sausages didn’t look properly cooked. We asked to get a carvery instead which wasn’t nice either. The plates were cold which made the meat cold, the veg had obviously been sat for ages as it was rock hard and dry. Stood and waited for the carver to come out and serve for ages too, other diners also commented their disappointment with previous visits. Unfortunately won’t be coming again

As a childminder I take the children in my care to the play area regularly. A member of staff named Aisling particularly stands out! You never see her not busy. If there aren’t customers to serve she’s constantly cleaning this and that. And she is always so friendly to customers. She’s a credit to you!

This place is brilliant the best carvery around always piping hot and a fantastic choice of meat and Veg I've not had anything of the menu but family have and said it's always been great Great service and value for money

As a regular for the carvery I was disappointed on this occasion. Returned my beef too tough to cut, and spoke to the staff.

Food is absolutely shocking we've been here three times for parties and family meal each time the food has either been cold, looks like it's been there days, isn't what is stated on the menu or just generally awful. Management was helping the first time we came and had to complain, however lost his rag when I sent lasagna back that looked days old and dry and burnt. He brought a "fresh one out which looked better still was awful and had carrots in. The "bbq tossed chicken wings are not that instead there dry chicken wings with a small pot of bbq sauce. By the time I got my food the rest was all cold so ended up spending £65.00 and left unfed and hungry. Staff in the wacky play area are lovely and very helpful other than that the garlic bread and cheese is good.

Stood ages waiting to order food at the till and to collect food from the carvery. The food was awful, over cooked,dry and garlic bread came out burnt. The toilet facilities were awful they were dirty and smelly. No atmosphere and the staff looked miserable.

We came as a family of 6 to play pool after we had a meal in town .on arrival my family went into the pool room to set the balls as I got a round of drinks of £20. It’s only when I paid for the drinks we were told you have to be 18 to play pool because of licensing laws which I said what a load of rubbish .we couldn’t play pool and sat down.Then noticed they have half price drinks every day during January.when I questioned the manager I was told it’s from the 15th .unfortunately it’s the 13th .The terms of this are on the bar in the smallest of small print but the advertising is in massive banners everywhere. Really bad experience and won’t ever step foot in there again.

Have been told today that tables cannot be moved together and only 4 chairs allocated to each table. As a childminder I brought 4 children with me and planned on having lunch here. My other half also had 4 children with her as per the rules on a childminders pass. "So where does one of us sit for lunch, on the floor?" I asked. I was told I could use another table, but not pull it up next to our current table; health and safety rules were quoted as the reason. It delves logic! Petty rules being enforced by jobsworths. They missed out on a lunch order for 10. Their loss.

Had Christmas Dinner here and it was well worth the money. Food was really good and will definitely book again for a meal and Christmas Dinner. Staff was really good and helpful especially as it was Christmas. Well done staff it was a good meal 🙂

This is a nice carvery. Serves Strongbow. Friendly staff. Quite quiet. Dog friendly. Generous meat portion.

Magnificent food and very friendly and professional service

I brought my whole family for Christmas dinner today and had the most amazing service with fantastic food. The pub was really busy but the staff were super efficient and even though they were all working on Christmas Day they all seemed happy to be there and couldn’t do enough for us. 5 star all the way

The manager Oliver at the star was fantastic accommodating for 9 of us for a take away Xmas dinner at quite last minute. The food was excellent and would definitely recommend. Thanks

Used to visit here fairly often many moons ago for food. The carvery we had the other week was brilliant - delicious, lovely and piping hot, plenty to choose from and an excellent portion - highly recommended. Unfortunately we visited more recently for a pub meal and my mixed grill was absolutely awful. The staff here are very pleasant and helpful. After cooking me another which was very much the same, I came to the conclusion the quality of ingredients wasn't very good. As mentioned, the staff are very helpful and a credit to the chain. Nothing was too much trouble and so we would be happy to visit again sometime when the chance arises.

Had the christmas dinner. Really impressed, great quality and value. Will certainly be going again.

Review updated. Well I've returned to the star twice since my last review and been surprised. I didn't go for the carvery but ate from the pub menu instead. I was pleased with a hot,tasty freshly cooked meal of fish and chips. Hand battered cod as well. I like to give credit where credit is due. Well done! Keep it up! Attentive staff. However the carvery could have been alot better. Poor quality vegetables. Fatty or dry meats and roast potatoes done in a deep fat fryer. Sauces scarce had to ask. Dont think a repeat visit will be on the cards for us. Visited on a Thursday evening at 7pm

Found this place as went for a drive and was hungry.Did not disappoint! Had the carvery and was delicious.Would recommend!

Looking from the carpark, the building is looking old and grubby, and a couple of smashed windows just boarded up. It's not a good look, really. Had a look at the carvery, and it all looked dry as hell but but the kids wanted to give it a try, and I was shocked! The guy who was serving had to weigh the meat. Talk about saving money. ( been told by an old member of staff it's the managers idea) I ordered the shredded beaf with sweet chilly sauce. We all sat down to eat, and the kids had a bit of turkey, and that's it. I had my meal and later had a bad belly. :( That will be the last time my family and I will visit. Shame, really, it used to be so good

Absolutely shocking place new management my bum .... food took ages to come and was Absolutely shockin and in the play area was that cold my lips was blue another 2 people I know said they had similar experiences avoid at all costs !!

Updated review -- still clean and tidy friendly staff although today the carvery meat was fine no issues but the sides cauliflower cheese mash parsnips roast potatoes dry burnt as if left out for a while I requested for better cauliflower as it looked dry which the staff member agreed and got some more out and managed I Managed to salvage some half decent portions of the others but that was a push / November 2023 update - better quality of carvery food today and meat selection although order a mini mixed grill the chips where over cooked and quite hard.

Food came reasonably quickly and didn't taste too bad. Prices are pretty good. There's a quiz on a Tuesday night which is free to enter, there's also Music Bingo for £1 and "open the box" which is £1.

Food was average what you expect from pubs. Nice comfortable place good customer service been here several times over the years. Has a pool table and a kids play area attached to it with a outdoor play area with benches so adults can watch their children and eat outside.

Welcoming pub with friendly staff, well stocked bar with a good selection of gin. Extensive menu of food options to suit most tastes and a children's play area.

Food 5 stars rated on price. For under or around a tenner the food is great for the price. GreenKing(the chain) food certainly better than BrewersFayre from my experiences. Kiddy friendly and can be a bit noisy at times, but quite quiet at others and you can usually find a quiet spot. Ordering from the table with the app is quick and is great for the lazy (including me). Staff always pleasant and welcoming and I'd recommend for a cheap and tasty meal and a drink. Not sure how badly the recent closure of the adjacent cinema will impact footfall as would be a shame if the place closed. Go grab yourself a well priced bite and help keep the place open.

Went here with a few friends before and after the Burnley v Chelsea game, nice clean pub with food that, although smelled very nice and appeared good value, I wasn't particularly hungry. Friendly bar staff who offered options for drinks offers. Very reasonable prices, quick service. The only downside was the plastic 'glasses' but I expect that was down to the local police. Security were very helpful and also very friendly. Would definitely recommend and I would return if Burnley (hopefully) stay up.
