Battye's Fish & Chips in Wakefield

Could be cleaner. Condiments on table were dirty and the tray our drinks were brought on had food debris and multiple stains. Very off putting, which is a shame as the fish and chips are very good, but afraid we won't be going back.

Visited the takeaway today. The fish & chips are OK.... if you're prepared to wait 18 mins for for 2 fish to be cooked !! Friday lunch time - 1 young lad frying for the takeaway, & restaurant & all Just Eat deliveries. Its ridiculous The service is disgusting. The 2 young girls serving were rude, ignorant & totally clueless. She looked at us & said "What do you want"? When we asked how much longer would it be, as we had already been waiting 15 minutes, she said " I'm not telling you" ! Then ahe disappeared into the back !! 1 chap after us asked for chips & curry sauce. The other girl serving put his curry in a pot & he said, sorry, could I have it over my chips please. She gave him a filthy look & chucked the curry sauce on the side & put some on his chips. She then just plonked them on the counter & walked off !! I've never experienced rude service like it before & certainty won't be going again !!

Go e downhill since we last went

Visited early Saturday afternoon, very quick service. Food cooked to order so very fresh & hot. Very good haddock portions, even though we always order "mini fillet" which is more than enough. We are frequent visitors here.

I have been looking for a decent fishy in castleford and airedale and now have found one my local at crown airedale is rubbish so had to travel try others further away right I really enjoyed my fish ordered a special and what I didn't know first time buyers get 1 free so got 2 for price of 1 I've just finished 1 cant manage other really nice good size special really clean, did it with barely no batter on for me was banging friendly people I will be making it my regular even thoe have to walk or catch bus to get there i recommend

Waited 15 minutes for staff to appear, when asked what the soup was, the waitress looked totally shell shocked and said she didn’t know, when asked if she could find out she was totally disinterested. Don’t know about the food (as we decided to leave before ordering and find another restaurant) but their customer service is completely non existent. It’s no wonder the restaurant only had one other couple in the place. Would certainly not recommend this restaurant to anyone

Call here for small fish and chips when going shopping as they are really nice, freshly cooked and good value for money .

Placed an order for delivery, came in good time but food was passable what actually turned up as a whole meal was missing, rang the restaurant to be told they couldn't send it so I should pick it up I explained I don't drive hence delivery to be told neither do we so submit a refund request and order elsewhere, I will not use ever again, food and attitude both shocking

We, as a family, have been going to Battyes for years and my sons from down south always cannot wait to have a meal there when they visit. However, yesterday and it was purely our fault that we had gone out for the day and Battyes had closed their restaurant but the takeaway was still going to be open for another hour. We drove like a bat out of hell from Normanton and got there in plenty of time to order our meals. There was a young man doing the frying and a very rude teenager serving. We asked if we can sit down and would clean up after ourselves which we did. All our chips were gritty and sandy and lukewarm. The mini fishes were more fishy than usual and my boys picked around it. I thought, grab the bull by the horn and bring this to her attention. She was having none of it and so I asked her to try one but the small woman from the restaurant stepped in with her input and gave us a scientific lessons on how the chips are washed,chipped and ready for the fryer. I think because we had gone near closing time, they have dredged the last lot and fried them with grit as well. It was disgusting! We were starving having saved ourselves all day and actually binned the meal and condiments to the value of £33 and drove to KFC up the road. They said that they would never come back which is a shame because it is always on form and very good value for money. I think you should retrain the young girl serving on customer relations and manage a smile. If looks could kill!!

This Fish & Chip shop has really gone downhill in the last couple of visits, The customer before me was disgusted about the lack of chips in his 2 chip butties and informed them he wouldn`t be returning to the shop again, after waiting almost 15 for my order I had the same experience with my Fish & Chips, When I asked about the lack of chips the assistant told me and I quote "she was confused" when I asked have you been told to put less chips in the orders to maximise profits? again she replied "she was confused" The staff here seem out of their depth bordering on incompetent, This business has signed up to Deliveroo leading to mistakes in orders, longer waiting times due to Deliveroo taking priority, This used to be a good Fish & Chip shop but its gone downhill as a result of greed & profit! Was very disappointed tonight with service, the girl serving was so unprofessional, she had nails, or should I say talons, that should never be allowed in food shops, so unhygienic, she was rubbing her eye and talking to what I believe to be a family member on the phone instead of serving, she then proceeded to open the box and walk out into the cafe area still holding the open box which my food was going to be put into. She then returned with said box waving it about in mid air whilst talking with her colleagues . My food was ready, stood in the tray for several minutes going cold and greasy. I asked her not to use the box as I didn’t know where she had been with it in her hand. I’m going to speak with manager if I go in again

We didn't receive any food was delivered to wrong address when rang them to find out was spoke to in a very rude Manor by a young girl wouldn't pass me on to anyone else refused any help at all I have never come across anyone as rude in my life...I'm a regular customer and the food is normally lovely and no problems but the way I've just been spoken to and also 20 pound down with no food.

I made an order that was delivered to a different address. I spoke to a very disrespectful teenager who was very cheeky rude and She should be sacked. I've orded from here many times but after tonight will no longer. She wasn't helpful She spoke bad and disrespectful to a customer when all I wanted was my food. I asked to speak to the manager but she kept putting the phone down. No consideration for me what so ever. So rude and gobby. She should be ashamed of herself. So I've no food and quids out then spoken to like that. Shocking. Shame cos the food was rather nice.

Unfortunately on Sunday the cod was not fresh, although safe to eat,the fat also needs changing.We go here regularly and normally it's delicious, something is definitely not right,we won't be going anymore.Fresh cod should not have a slight ammonia smell and a strong fishy aroma, sorry just been honest

Got a small fish and chips. The batter was rubbery and cold, inedible. Chips were cold and undercooked. Normally so nice. Disappointed.

My niece Celina nash works here, she’s very unhygienic, she doesn’t wash and she wears the same mucky clothes everyday. So to everyone who thinks about getting food from there I’d advise otherwise. My advice to the manager there is to sack her. Also I heard you steals from her work place and puts stuff on peoples food

USED to be our favourite go to restaurant for fish and chips but unfortunately standards seem to have fallen in recent months. I realise now why the place looks empty whenever we pass. We won't be returning anytime soon.

Customer service should be at the heart of everything a business does yet here is not the case. Don't give you time to look at the menu. Don't tell you how much it is in total. Never said thank you to the customer for spending there and keeping the business afloat. Attitude/body language was very poor from the young lass for the face of the business. Need to learn people skills. Food was below average for the price. Won't be back. Horrendous. The negative reviews speak truth.

So, a 'manager' of Batteyes chip shop in Glasshoughton, Castleford has just accused the driver that has just dropped our order off of being a thief. Our order was incomplete, and he stated that the person who packed the order checked it was all there. (He also said he had checked it) It was not. So we asked if he was calling us a liar. He said no. So the only other option was that the driver opened the sealed bag, removed the item, and sealed it back up. This was a paper bag, sealed with cellotape, so this is a fantastic skill!!! He said yes, the driver has stolen it, it happens all the time!!! So he has openly accused the driver of stealing, rather than admitting his colleague had made a mistake! How appalling is that?! Accusing the people who are keeping your business (or you in a job) going! Oh, and I have passed this on to Just Eat!

Young girl on the counter has the worst customer service I've ever experienced. When I asked if she was going to wash her hands after licking curry from them, I got the worst response ever. I had stood and watched her multiple times touch her face and put her fingers in her mouth, anyone who has completed basic food and hygiene knows that hands should be washed after putting them in your mouth. Shame as the food was quite nice, but customer service is very poor.

Went with my parents for lunch. My mum got pensioners fish and chips special, I got scampi, chips & salad, my dad got fish, chips, curry sauce and we all got pots of tea. Lovely food, great service! Highly recommend! Will go back for sure!

Hi guys….well we all like a deal don’t we….especially Yorkshire people…..this restaurant stands back from the road looks like a new building …this was our first visit today.but without daunt will be the first of many.on arrival I looked at menu….which surprised me.big selection of home made food………we only went for the fish and chips we didn't know or expected such a Vared menu….any way I had the large cod ( but they do offer a giant cod) and my wife had the plaice only going to say a few words and that is ‘out of this world’ not only was the food here the same has what you would expected from ‘the Ivy ’ it was better and a lot cheeper…..ok it was a little more expensive then your average fish and chip shop ( they also have a takeaway at side) but your get what you pay for here a lovely clean well kept modern restaurant.with first class friendly service.the staff will look after you here guys.and the owner/chef will not only cook you first class fish and chips which were fresh on the day……..will charge you very little money

Just wasted £21.00 . worst fish and chips for a while , chips cold and stuck to paper lining , peas cold and fish was chewy and strong tasting , went in the bin.very disappointed.

It's just about the best value fish and chips anywhere. Clean and tidy restaurant pleasant service leave you to get on with your meal, but nothing is too much trouble. Wetherby Whaler is at least a third more expensive.

Got the mid week deal - 2 small fish and chips with a drink each for £14.50 (I think). Tasty and a good lunch time portion size. Friendly service too. Would go back!

Food can be really nice but sometimes the fish is overly 'fishy' and soft as if not very fresh but other times it's lovely thick meaty pieces of fish. Very hit and miss.

Had lunch there today we won't be going again .Stale bread served(bread and butter) the fish very greasy and chips under cooked. Not a pleasant experience at all.

Not impressed. Youths coming in the back door helping themselves from the serving side of the pans with their bare fingers.

Gutted,we thought we'd found our chippy finally then today was really bad.25 minutes to get out order prioritising just eat and deliveroo. Finally got our order home and the batter was soggy and the amount of undercooked/raw chips was ridiculous. We've had fish and chips here loads of times and always been spot on but today was bad really bad!! People walked in and straight out and people were saying in the shop they wouldn't be back.

I’ve used this establishment before either eating in or takeout. If you are not fussed about the long wait and do bring a good book to read, fish full of bones and cold, disgusting chips and tasteless mushy peas which is also served cold by very rude so-called waitresses, then you’ll not be disappointed. Yesterday I called in for only a fish cake and portion of fish bites and waited 20 minutes only to discover my order went to someone in the restaurant and wondered if I would settle for something else?
