Had a superb 3 course Sunday lunch here celebrating a birthday and Australia Mothers Day. Staff were so lovely, kind and helpful. Huge portion of delicious meat. Gluten free yorkshire pudding and gravy. Plenty of roast potatoes and fresh vegetables. Icing on the cake was a candle topped sherry trifle and a rendition of 'Happy Birthday to you' sung by the staff. Really made my day and I will definitely be back when I am down south again. A gem of a restaurant.

I rediscovered Bates restaurant about a year ago, after not having been there for nearly 20 years! I am a ridiculously fussy eater, and am lucky to find even one dish on a menu in a restaurant. At Bates, I could probably have four or five to choose from.......very odd for me! The problem is, on my first visit (a year or so ago), I chose the lamb rump, and now I can't bring myself to try anything else.....it is absolutely delicious! An incredibly generous portion, accompanied by crispy sauté potatoes and vegetables, in a lovely gravy. The service is excellent and the wine very reasonably priced, as is the food! All in all, I always give my meal 9 out of 10....my husband says, "Why not a 10 then?" My reply, "Too much food! :)" To sum up... amazing food, fantastic, friendly service and super music playing in the background. If I had to fault anything, it would be that the lights are not quite dim enough for me ...I'm nearly 60 and benefit from slightly softer lighting!! :):)

Great little Restaurant, beautiful Food, has to be one of Bournemouth Special little secrets, all my favourites on the menu, I had the steak for main course, medium rare. It was perfect. My wife had the lamb which was so tender it just fell apart. This family run Restaurant is warm, friendly and delivers on all levels. Thank you guys for making our Valentines evening perfect.

We booked our Christmas day dinner here as a group of 4 at £100 per head. We couldn't have asked for anything else! We all had such a happy time over 5 hours and 8 courses. The food was hot, home cooked, absolutely delicious and completely unfaultable. The service from the waiting staff was amazing from the moment we walked in to the moment we walked out. Very attentive and highly professional team running this place. Fantastic Chef. Goody bags full Christmas sweety delights to take home, Christmas crackers and 2 huge party poppers on the table to explode for some end of meal fun and crimbo celebration. Bates restaurant serves good tasty food. It’s plain English food and the quality is very good. I found out about Bates through my parents. To put this delicately Bates clientele is main the people in the more mature age range. That being said the 3 times I have been there is have always had a positive food experience and the service is very good too.

We visited Bates for an evening meal to celebrate a family birthday. The staff were welcoming, nothing was too much trouble, and our meals were perfectly cooked. We have been to Bates before and plan to go again shortly.

Excellent food and excellent service. We will definitely be returning. Apparently, their Sunday roast is to die for!

We went on a whim and found an excellent place which serves high quality English fare. We both enjoyed the lamb rump on the first night, with excellent gravy and plenty of vegetables - especially the sautee potatoes!) It was then back the following night to sample the excellent fillet steak. We recommend the desserts; we tried, banoffee pie, peach slice, ice cream and Jaffa orange cake and they were uniformly excellent. And you can park in nearby side-roads without having to pay the usual exorbitant Bournemouth parking fees.

You are welcomed by happy enthusiastic staff nothing is to much trouble, the restaurant is clean and had a nice vibe we had lovely meals which were tasty and very well presented also a good choice of starters which were the same. There is a nice wine list we had the sparkling white which was good and reasonably priced. We had a great time and will definitely return lots of dishes I still want to try thank you

My husband and i went last night 28/07/23 to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We will definitely be going back the food was amazing and the service couldn’t be faulted. We will definitely be going back.

Sunday lunch .. Roast Lamb with freshly cooked roast potatoes, new potatoes and vegetables.... etc etc and a great choice of freshly made desserts . It has a feel of being in a friends dining room and being treated ...... Thanks to all. Definitely ring to book your table with a few days lee way.

I have used Bates for many years now, taking people with me, or recommending people. Those I have introduced to Bates have always been very happy with the food, service, the staff are always friendly and helpful. In fact a few years ago I had some friends staying with me from Australia. They have travelled to many countries and reckon the meal we had at Bates was the best in every respect.

We came to Bates Restaurant a year ago and were delighted. We returned at Easter for a family reunion and once again today to celebrate Dad's 92nd birthday. As expected, the food was plentiful,beautifully presented and tasty. The same super efficient waitress looked after us. I'm sure we will return again!

I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the area. It was honestly one of the best meals I've ever had, decent size portions and cooked to perfection. Our waitress for lovely, very friendly and efficient and the food was served promptly. Great value specials and a lot of menu options.

have eaten here many times before but this occasion was somewhat disappointing. the Main course "Pie of the Day" was very good as usual, but the Starter was an insult in all honesty and would be best not served at all, unless they intend to improve it...?

We visited this restaurant as part of a group. The service is friendly and very efficient. We had the fixed evening menu which was very varied. The fillet steaks were perfectly cooked as ordered, even one ordered blue which many places seem to have a problem with. Good sized generous portions, not fancy or pretentious but excellent value all round.

Normally we dine in the evening but went for lunch to celebrate our wedding anniversary. What a lovely time. The service was first class, food amazing especially the steak pie ( I am a Lancashire lass and know a good pie). I do think this could be good for families but to be honest, like it where the bulk of clients are adults!

For more than 20 years, we have lived within walking distance of this little gem but only recently ‘discovered’ it. What a waste of all those years! It must be one of Bournemouth’s best kept secrets. There is nothing to find fault with ……lovely staff, warm welcome and great service in cosy surroundings. Then there’s the I food! Oh my goodness! Mouth-wateringly delicious and served with a smile. Booked a table for 8 for lunch, 7 adults and 1 child. Between us we probably had almost everything on the menu - 5 different starters, 5 different main courses 4 different desserts- not one complaint! Everything arrived quickly, & together, and all plates cleared, with the exception of some veg because there was so much of it. The restaurant was spotless, very tastefully decorated and more covid appropriate than we were - social distancing went out the window when we met up with family we hadn't seen for a very long time. We all managed to park within 20 yards of the restaurant, which was excellent as three of the party had mobility issues. The bill was extremely reasonable and our waitress was all one could want, helpful, attentive, patient and kept smiling. We will definitely return.

Where can one get a set three course meal for under £20 these days..., and of this quality? I don't think one can anymore. Outatanding value and delicious food. They do a brilliant, if filling Pie. Hadn't eaten here for a while but it is as good as ever.

The service was excellent,food also, both the quality and quantity, the 3 course saturday night special at £24.95 is exceptional value,looking forward to returning to Bournemouth when this crazy world gets back to something like normal,and especially to revisiting Bates restaurant

Habían dispuesto las Mesas para que todos nosotros, 12, nos sentáramos, esto lo hizo sentir mucho más íntimo y personal. El servicio y la comida fueron excelentes, como siempre. Mientras esperábamos, nos sirvieron pan de primera. Para mis platos principales tuve cordero que estaba cocinado a la perfección y mi compañero tenía lubina, también excelente. Enormes cuencos de las mejores patatas asadas más crujientes, patatas nuevas, guisantes, brócoli y zanahorias acompañaron los platos. Todo muy caliente, incluidos los platos, y todo impecable. El sábado por la noche disfrutamos de una excelente comida entregada por este acogedor restaurante local (también tuvimos un almuerzo de domingo hace un par de semanas). Las raciones eran muy generosas y calientes. Tomamos los Canelones que ocupaban la mitad del plato y esto iba acompañado de patatas y verduras salteadas y de postre elegimos unos gateux de la Selva Negra que eran enormes y venían con un bote de nata. Todo estaba muy bien preparado y sin duda volveremos a pedir.

We've just had an excellent take away lunch from our favourite restaurant. Fantastic food delivered to our door . Piping hot and generous portions. A real treat! We will be doing it again soon.

Mi esposo y yo hemos tenido muchas comidas de celebración maravillosas en este fabuloso restaurante familiar, aniversarios de bodas, cumpleaños 65 y 70 cumpleaños de un amigo, desde comidas íntimas para dos y fiestas de 25 amigos. Pero esta fue nuestra primera experiencia de una comida para llevar de Bates durante estos terribles días del virus Corona. No nos decepcionó, el rosbif estaba tierno y abundante y generosas raciones de verduras cocinadas a la perfección, brócoli, guisantes, nabo y patatas asadas. Todo llegó en recipientes, incluido un recipiente separado de salsa sabrosa y ollas pequeñas de salsa de rábano picante. Como fue una comida de dos platos elegida, su tarta de manzana casera y natillas estaban riquísimas y se entregaron con un generoso bote de crema entre los dos. Todo fue entregado por un repartidor muy alegre que quizás estaba un poco desconcertado de estar entregando a una caravana estacionada en nuestro camino. Una vez más, Bates ha proporcionado comida excelente a un precio muy razonable, con una excelente relación calidad-precio.

There is very limited choice if you go here on a Sunday lunchtime. There are NO specials, one vegetarian, (which is very poor value at £17) no vegan just the choice of three roasts. Despite the fuss made over whether we wanted Yorkshire puddings with our dinners they were soggy, undercooked and inedible. The price was more expensive than listed on their website.There is also no choice as to the number of courses a person wants - you pay for three courses whether you only want one or two, which in this day of obesity problems and diabetes is irresponsible.There is no printed drinks list. There is no itemised bill so no-one knows what they have been charged for drinks.There are no disabled toilets with steps down to the toilets.We were rushed through desserts and the trifle was absolutely horrid and two of us felt quite ill afterwards. Shall not be going back.

The Customer Service is excellent always friendly an accommodating.We had a Roast Pork dinner.Plates where hot which we like because it keeps the food hot an you can savour every bit.The desserts are out of this world. An you are never rushed nice chilled out atmosphere.We love it here because it is traditional definite 5 stars from usThanks Bates we will definetly be back for my birthday.

A very unassuming traditional English restaurant but the food and service were superb. Highly recommend the 3 course Sunday lunch.

I was very impressed with this lovely unassuming establishment. It combines a rather traditional menu, low-key friendly atmosphere with first-class ingredients beautifully cooked, in generous portions; plus white table linen! Vegetables, recently AWOL in many up-market restaurants, were available in quantity and much appreciated. Apparently run by the same family for eighteen years, it is clearly much loved and has gained yet another fan here.

El resto de la familia entró y se sentó cuando una amigable camarera se acercó para preguntarnos si queríamos beber y después de unos minutos más regresó para tomar nuestro pedido. Pedimos nuestras comidas y no pasó mucho tiempo antes de que empezáramos nuestros entrantes. La comida fue deliciosa y sabrosa, como lo fue hace tres años cuando fuimos a nuestro 25º aniversario de bodas. Asistimos a eventos especiales y disfrutamos del ambiente del restaurante. todo el personal que vimos fue muy amable y servicial con ellos al sacar una vela en medio de mi bagatela y me cantaron feliz cumpleaños, lo cual disfruté mucho y les agradecí cuando salimos. No recuerdo haber pagado un cargo de señor por 8 personas o más antes, así que fue una sorpresa ya que algunas personas habrían dado una propina para todo el personal, pero acabamos de pagar lo que se debía. Volveremos quizás el año que viene o en verano para otra comida familiar.

Bates es un buen restaurante inglés competente, pero no excepcional, sin pretensiones, bueno. El menú, la comida, el servicio y la decoración son agradables, bien ejecutados y confiables, uno podría estar en un restaurante en la década de 1970, y eso es un cumplido, no una crítica. Es una bienvenida excepción a los restaurantes temáticos y de moda y es consistente en todo lo que hace. Los entrantes y platos principales son excelentes, los postres satisfactorios, ninguno de los platos es inusual o inesperado. El servicio es discreto, amable, pero no siempre atento. We had a lovely Saturday lunch at Bates to celebrate a friend's birthday. Excellent, friendly service, well served and plentiful dishes and of course the amazing desserts that give you the wow factor as you walk in in the display cabinet.

We have visited this restaurant last year whilst on a short break and were keen to return. This time we decided on a day trip and booked a table in advance( aprox 4 weeks before).

Went in a party of ten or so on a Saturday night and had a three course dinner for around £24. I had shoulder of lamb and it was huge, the starter and pud were both on the large size too. You wouldn’t go hungry that’s for sure. Really efficient and friendly staff, must be popular as the place was packed. Well worth a visit and I will certainly go again. Recommended.

Fui con mi esposo a almorzar a Bates y la pasé muy bien. El personal es atento y amable y el servicio es inigualable. La comida estaba bien presentada y sabía deliciosa, había mucho allí y sabía realmente casera. Una excelente selección de postres sin duda recomendaría este lugar.

I have been here before and only returned there because it was a friends birthday and she chose it. The set menu was 2 courses for £18.95 (starter and main). It would have been nice to have been able to have main and dessert as an option. It has had the same vegetarian meal for years - cannelloni and there are only 2 items on the a la carte menu, plus a dish of the day. The veggie special was cannelloni or mushroom wellington. I have had mushroom wellington elsewhere and it was delicious - a dome of short crust pastry filled with a variety of vegetable. This was a flat puff pastry circle, filled with mushroom in a sauce. It was mainly pastry and very bland. It cost £14.95.

A great restaurant with great food and friendly, helpful staff. It’s a shame that parking in the area is so difficult.

El pavo. . . . . . . Estaba delicioso. . . perfectamente cocinado y una porción enorme. . . . . Un montón de verduras frescas para decorar. . . . . El Pud de Navidad hecho en casa también fue perfecto. . . . . . . Servicio encantador y valor fantástico.

El mejor almuerzo de domingo que he tenido en mucho tiempo. La carne fue cocinada a la perfección palabras de mi esposa, mi cerdo estaba delicioso con muchas verduras servidas por separado con un bote de salsa. Los entrantes vinieron con pan crujiente y mantequilla. Los desiertos eran para morirse, todo esto por menos de 17 libras. El servicio fue excelente de principio a fin. El inconveniente era que teníamos que reservar semanas antes, pero valió la pena esperar. No es un gran restaurante pero muy acogedor. Ya hemos reservado para octubre.

Returned here to celebrate my son's 40th and my 65th birthday , family and friends table for 14 always accomodated as previous visit ,

Six of us visited on a very busy evening. I think every table was in use. But we were not troubled by too much noise and two of us wear hearing aids which pick up background noise. The service was attentive but subtle and the food was delicious. The menu does not seem to vary but we were all able to choose a starter and main without any trouble. The desserts were on display in a cabinet. The portion sizes would satisfy anyone and all of us agreed it was delicious. They also have a good wine list.

We brought a friend from Thailand for dinner here and he was most impressed. We were intending to have 3 courses but could not manage the dessert because of the generous portions.

Excellent meal with friends on our wedding anniversary. Great portion sizes, well cooked and reasonably priced.

We came here for a Sunday lunch, it was quite full so I would recommend reserving a table if you want to go here. We were had a warm welcome and the service was efficient throughout our time here. For starters I had the prawn cocktail. As is often the case, the prawns had no flavour to them as they were presumably previously frozen. I know it must be difficult to obtain a fresh supply of prawns all the time but I have been to restaurants that do them so it must be possible. We both had the roast beef for the main course and this was delicious. It was served with generous portions of roast and boiled potatoes and other vegetables along with a fulll jug of gravy plus a yorkshire pudding of course. I had the sherry trifle for desert which was also a generous size. Only one other tiny complaint, I thought there was something wrong with the light where we were sitting but, when I looked up, I noticed that there was a ceiling fan which was interrupting the light from one of the ceiling bulbs causing the light to flicker; this would be so easy to fix by moving the fan a couple of feet across the ceiling.
