Basset Down Complex Restaurant in Swindon

Nice ambience exceptional roast everything from the meat , the gravy , spuds cabbage were extremely tasty it was heavenly. Its not the cheapest but the old saying you get what you pay for is certainly true.

Food and service excellent. Sunday lunch was plentiful, healthy beautifully cooked. Two of us had salmon which was awesome. Cooked perfectly with spinach and cavalier Nero and the most amazing mashed potato on the planet.

Poorly trained staff gave our order waited an hour, no one is aware of a table not having been served, we checked, the order hadn’t been put through. Staff and bar man have no idea what whats going on, would rather chat to each other than look a customer in the eye, wasn’t busy. They are not trained that there’s a table there that’s been in a long time but no food. We were then promised it would be out in 5 mins but still took 15 a total of 1hr 20 mins wait for two sandwiches, no reduction on the bill either just poor training won’t be going back.

Had heard great things so thought we would try it out for Sunday Lunch. Service is very slow and in the end we had to go to the bar to order drinks as had been seated and then ignored. The staff stand at the corner of the bar chatting to each other and don't look around so you cant even catch their eye. We ordered roasts, one pork and one beef and they looked lovely when they arrived but this was then followed by the smallest portion of veg for two people I have ever seen. All you could have was a sniff of cauliflower cheese and a desert spoon of peas ! The roast potatoes were awful and the dessert we had was ok but not great. All in all a poor show but with so much potential to be great as the restaurant is lovely. Speed of service needs to improve as they have plenty of staff but they are not very attentive or aware of their customers as much as they could be. I wont be back as there are other places that are much better.

Quality of food is excellent, lovely venue only criticism is the speed of service but it is worth it. We’ve been a number of times.

We had an excellent breakfast, the produce was fresh, great quality and it all came with attentive service. The drinks were really nice and hot and the price reflected the quality and surroundings. We will be back to enjoy more from your menu!

My husband & his mum often come here & have had excellent service & food unfortunately today was not so good. Waited over an hour for food most of it was good but a bit cold. We asked a server about our order she said she would check & walked past our table twice without speaking to us again. Had to go up to the counter to ask again apparently our ticket had slipped down somewhere. Food came out, looked great, generous portions - smoked salmon & cream cheese in a bagel, & the BBC had plenty of bacon. Then my eagerly awaited duck egg with soldiers? we queried the very small fried egg which was smaller than the medium chicken eggs we use at home - we were assured it was a duck egg as the shells are white. A lot of eggs are white shelled that doesn't make it a duck egg. The soldiers not like soldiers you would expect, a slice of over grilled soda bread? cut in half with garlic cream cheese on tasted good but very hard. Generous sized mugs of real coffee which were taken off our bill.

Not good. The food took so long to come. A number of things I couldn't have as they had cream in (we weren't asked if we had allergies). I told the waiting staff that I couldn't eat cream and they bought me a sauce with cream in for my fish. She took it away to check with the chef and never came back. I had to seek her out and then she offered me an alternative when I had half eaten a dry meal. The tempura batter certainly wasn't tempura. More like normal fish and chip batter. We were asked if we wanted dessert but in the end had to find a member of staff to order it. I have never had to pay 50p or anything for oat milk before!! My guests enjoyed the beef ox cheek. The staff were nice enough but definitely need more training and the kitchen needs more staff!! A shame but we won't be going again. All in all not a good experience.

We went as a group of friends for Sunday lunch. The atmosphere in the place was great, the food was excellent and the staff were outstanding. Good value and highly recommended

Six months ago, I would have given this establishment a 4 star review with a comment that the servings are starting to go downhill from what was served previously. A year ago, I would have given it a five. Now, and especially yesterday I can reduce my rating even further because it is clear now that this establishment is doing what everyone else is doing and ripping us all off. From a bowl of mixed veg this time last year (Broccoli, cabbage, carrot) to a small bowl of long beans and burnt and dried Cauliflower cheese yesterday. The menu has changed significantly too with how the menu used to be, todays is drastically cut down. Descriptions of the choices is notably different. I was especially dissapointed that the parfait had been removed as I was looking forward to my starter. Drinks have increased massively, a small bottle of Prosecco used to be 6:50 and now just under a tenner, and to charge an extra 4:75 for a small bowl of chutney with the cheese is utterly ridiculous. Come on Bassett Down, you are better that this. Very poor, if it wasn't for the excellent staff and in particular Dylan, my rating would have been a 2.

The food is well prepared, in fact, excellent. I withheld the final star because the service was far too slow. I enjoy a laid back meal without being rushed for the next sitting. This was miles away from that scenario, in fact we waited over three quarters of an hour for a cappuccino to arrive. I think we were there for over an hour before our meal was served. On the up side, the staff are very friendly and polite, and the food, when it eventually arrived, really very, very good. This was probably an off day, honestly I think you should try them, well worth the wait.

Four of us had a very pleasant lunch here. The fish and chips were delicious. Gorgeous piece of fish in crispy batter. Excellent chips. The tartare sauce was really lovely - made on the premises? The snickers sundae was very good. Nice, light setting with views across part of the golf course to trees.

My friend and i came here for breakfast today, after hearing great things about it we were looking forward to it…unfortunately it was very disappointing. I had the smoked salmon, poached eggs and avocado, as i dont like hollandaise sauce, my friend had the vegan breakfast. Service was good enough it came out quite quickly, but to be honest if i worked in a kitchen there is no way i would have served mine, the avocado was brown and some bits were hard, some of the smoked salmon was chewy with brown bits on the edges which tells me its not fresh..the poached eggs however were lovely. My friends vegan halloumi looked like a piece of fried bread, very greasy and the hash browns were very greasy also. When we complained the restaurant manager explained to us that the avocado came in diced and is sometimes like that, the smoked salmon apparently was a fresh packet opened that morning??..also the vegan halloumi and the hash browns are deep fried as thats the instructions on the packet of how to cook??, i find that difficult to believe as hash browns can be cooked under the grill or in the oven, and you shallow fry halloumi, not deep fry it!!…the manager did ask us if we wanted an alternative but we declined. They did take the vegan breakfast off the bill. She did also say that they never get complaints, so maybe we were just very unlucky or the chef felt the pressure of the 40-90 covers she told us they do every morning, or maybe he was just having a crap day? Either way we probably wont go again, not for brunch anyways, maybe lunch next time or a slab of choc fudge cake.

As there were 9 of us, we pre ordered (twice via the internet) when the organiser arrived , they still had not received it, so the order was taken again. The order when it came was still not correct. Food was lovely, but service was extremely slow!!! Allow plenty of time.

Not sure why I haven’t been here before but I will be going again. Great food, lovely restaurant and great friendly staff. The whole evening was really lovely and I now remember what eating out is supposed to be like. Nice and relaxing, not stuffy either (thought it may be), just good food ( good choice and nice veggie options) done well served by lovely people. Thank you.

We dined in this restaurant on Friday evening and cannot speak highly enough of it .The waiting staff are very attentive and professional .The food is superb ,really tasty and delicious .

The golf complex at Bassett down has been completely rebuilt. This incorporates a fantastic restaurant. Had the best fish and chips here. Was the best I have had for many years. The menu is not extensive, but the quality was brilliant. I assume they specialise in steaks but not sure. The wife had a Malaysian veg curry. My brother had a burger with pulled pork. both were delicious. yes, i had to try. The venue was lovely, bright, comfortable and spotless. We were made to feel very welcome as not members / players of golf. We will now make this our favourite place, was truly excellent.
