Bartellas in Chelmsford

We visited to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the food was incredible, the quality and the amount was perfect. One of the best meals we've had for a while. If you're in the area definitely book yourself a table!

Afternoon tea for 80th Birthday treat, dreadful from start to finish, dirty chipped china and cutlery. Group of 4 but only 2 or 3 certain fillings for 4 , didn't request smoked salmon, so they gave us beef but only 3 finger sandwiches, as they ran out, booked a week in advance, bread stale, no finesse, sandwiches on a tray and taken away then bought back out, no helping yourself on a tier plate. Cakes thrown on the plate, again not always 4 of everything. Hot day, no aircon, waited for service for fluids on several occasions, only customers in restaurant, so, definitely not busy, waiter kept disappearing. No atmosphere, no customers, now I know why. I have been to a lot better for less price, save your money and go elsewhere, lots of other establishments. I was offered one voucher for the poor quality of food and service, they think I will go back on my own for afternoon tea, or for me to pay again for someone to accompany me. Great customer service.

Highly recommend. Booked a table for son's birthday dinner. Staff welcoming and attentive. Great menu selected, all very happy with our meals and presentation. Thank you for the complimentary plate with happy birthday piped on and sweets. Much appreciated. Excellent wine.

I came to Bartellas for an afternoon tea for my mum birthday. I could not fault anything from the service to the staff. We all had a lovely time. I would highly recommend Bartellas

We're regulars at Bartellas, especially the Sunday roast. The roast was excellent, as always. My partner had the sticky lamb, which was (far) too sweet (OK its meant to be sweet, but this was excessive). Service is great (as always here). We noticed that prices have gone up (again I understand the cost pressures on restaurants), but at just over £80 for 2 courses (including 2 small drinks, 2 coffees, plus service) it starting to get expensive. (It's really hard to give it other than 5 stars, but there are small issues that make it "very good" not "excellent").

Had a fantastic lunch, today. I had calves liver with parsnips, creamy mash, etc. Liver was cooked to perfection. Delicious gravy 😋. Food arrived beautifully presented and hot. Am going back again, next week!

First review since December 2021 and have done at least six visits since then. Been using Bartellas for over ten years and we've always enjoyed the whole experience. Christmas Lunch 2023 was just exceptional with a wide ranging menu and each course beautifully presented and widely spaced out so you would never feel rushed there. Fantastic waiting staff who made you feel like 'family' and even the chef came out to chat to us all. We've lost count on the number of Christmas Days there but will still come back for more along with our regular lunches.

There have been a few changes in staff lately at Bartellas, and (naturally) you wonder what the impact will be. We're regulars (especially Sunday roast), and I'm pleased to say it's just as good as always. Excellent food, cooked exactly as requested. Friendly, helpful staff. Sensible prices. Must be one of the very best roasts in this area.

Bartellas made everything perfect for my 80th birthday lunch. Brilliant welcome, great service, excellent food and drink - and a birthday greeting to go with it all. Well done everyone involved - we'll certainly go back for the next celebration - and probably before for a superb mid-week lunch!

We have just returned home from a fantastic Sunday lunch meeting up with family. Three from Margate, three from Chelmsford and two from Suffolk everyone enjoyed a delicious three course meal and my gluten allergies were well catered for. Service was first class. Booked one of the dining pods for my birthday there were 6 of us and although a chilly evening we were perfectly comfortable inside. Service fantasic but the food was wonderful best food I have had in a restaurant fir a very long time. Food similar prices to a lot of the bistro type pub but bartellas food is in a different league. We plan to go here more often.

If I could give it 6 stars I would. Fantastic service, amazing food, tentative staff. Definitely coming again soon!

We recently hosted our daughters First Holy Communion celebration at Bartella’s in a private room and have to say it was a beautiful day. The lead up was completely seamless - we organised to visit the venue which was ideal for our party of 18 and promptly received the T&Cs. Throughout the booking process, the team there were quick to respond to any questions and always polite and personable in their communications. The room was beautifully laid out on the day and the food was amazing. Staff were on hand should we need anything and quickly adapted to any request or slight alteration if required. It was a wonderful day for our daughter and the family really enjoyed it. We wouldn’t hesitate the host future gatherings there.

Once again a fantastic Lunch at Bartella’s. As usual the food was cooked to perfection and the Service was excellent. I had the Pan fried wing of Skate with Garlic Roasted New Potatoes, tender stem broccoli, with Lemon Butter and Capers. This was so delicious, the skate was beautifully cooked and moist, and the Lemon Butter just added to the overall meal. My husband had the Calves Liver and Bacon with Creamy Mash. Once again perfectly cooked and tender. He had a selection of Ice Cream for dessert and I couldn’t resist the White Chocolate Cheesecake with Raspberry Coulis which was so lovely. I cannot praise this restaurant enough. We always feel comfortable there and we know that the food will be second to none.

Absolutely fantastic! We came here for a mother's day weekend treat and it was wonderful. We were skeptical that it wouldn't be because we made assumptions as it's attached to a hotel, if you're thinking that too - you couldn't be more wrong. Bartellas is a hidden gem. The prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is nice, the surroundings are lovely and the staff are wonderful! That's not even mentioning the food, which was phenomenal! Everyone really enjoyed it and Lorna couldn't do enough for us. It was a fantastic evening and we cannot wait to come back. If you're even slightly considering coming here and you're not sure, please stop thinking about it and just do it - you won't regret it.

We had a fabulous evening celebrating an 80th birthday. We were very impressed with the quality of the food, the wines, cocktails and the service. We hired a dome and it was perfect. We were so well looked after by Lorna and Bryan - nothing was too much trouble - thank you. We would thoroughly recommend Bartellas and will definitely be back.

This is the second time I have eaten here (both times when I have stayed at the hotel for work). The first time was around Halloween 2022 - there was a special menu for Halloween and I had the venison loin followed by a piece of warm chocolate brownie. Both were exquisite! The service was professional, efficient and friendly. I had a glass of house Sauvignon, which was also very nice. Tonight, there was only the regular menu - the options on which , I thought were a bit disappointing. Perhaps this is just my taste, but I think that some might actually struggle to find something that takes their fancy. Both of the other two diners in the restaurant at the same time as me opted for 'fish and chips'... I think this is an option a lot people take as a last resort. Anyway... determined not to have fish and chips, I opted for the chicken escalope with pesto, served with parmentier potatoes and roast tomatoes. Considering I don't ever usually choose chicken at a restaurant, it was very good! The presentation was excellent, and it was very tasty. I then had the brownie, hoping it would be as good as the one on the special menu last Halloween. It was nice, but not as good as the last time by any stretch. Once again, service was very professional and friendly, and I had a lovely meal. Not as good as last time - but perhaps this is a reflection that the 'special' menu really was just that! I did overhear the waiter tell another diner that this is a brand new menu, hence the lack of a specials menu. I think perhaps it needs a bit of tweaking. I would say to management, if they have seen a massive spike in diners ordering fish and chips... this might be an obvious sign. I look forward to returning!

We had lunch with friends on Sunday 6th November. We were reeally impressed with the staff who were excellent. The food was superb. We arrivied at 2pm and beacuse we had not seen our friends for a couple of years we had a lot to catch up on so we didnt leave there until 4.30pm - the staff were excellent and did not hurry us or harrass us - just a very relaxed lunch and atmosphere. Please pass our thanks on to all the staff including those we do not see behind the sches in the kitchen. One question - can you confirm that the 15% service charge on the bill actually goes to the hard working staff?

I had tried to book lunch elsewhere but fully booked and decided to give Bartellas a try. My brother had come to visit my elderly parents for the weekend after one of them had received a bad health diagnosis. My Mum was in a lot of back pain and the gentleman waiter went to get a chair with arms and a cushion from one of the bedrooms, which made her very comfy. The service was impeccable and not the kind of sub standard service we see so frequently these days. Those who had starters were really impressed and we all had the roast beef and each of us was asked how we wanted our beef. It was so delicious and I can honestly say I haven't had a roast that good for years. There was a lovely choice of desserts which were also very good. There were obviously a lot of regulars dining for Sunday lunch and it is easy to see why -a very friendly, comfortable setting and excellent food. We will be back very soon.

Went here to eat last night with friends. Haven’t been for a while. Really loved the new menu and they also had a specials page lots to choose from I was spoilt for choice ended up with the specials Thai red curry It was delicious. My wife and family arranged a surprise 60th Birthday meal here with 30 guests. The 3 course meal was great good food served hot and on time it could mot be faulted, We had the small function room at the end of the resturant the room was lovely the service fantastic and food out of this world, we also had rooms overnight which could not be faulted all in all a great experience managed to perfection by Terry and the team, such a lovely surprise and great unforgettable week end. Bartellas Sunday roast is something we used to look forward to. With lockdown it's been over a year since we've eaten inside. It's excellent as always. Friendly, efficient service. Perfect roast beef, pink as promised. Good wine list, many by the glass.

This was our first visit since March. Ourselves and our family normally eat here on a regular basis. Today the restaurant was very clean, had sanitising stations and individual menus. I'm pleased to say that standards are as high as ever.Plenty of choice on the menu. Our food was well cooked and nicely presented. As it as a warm day we sat outside in the gardens, very peaceful. All the staff were very friendly and polite. The toilets were very clean and tidy. Plenty of free parking.Bartellas have kept their high standards. Recommended

Since Moving into the area Just over a year ago we have made this our regular best eating out restaurant. I have had the afternoon tea with friends, lunch with friends and even arranged a hen private gathering last year for my best friend. I cannot tell you enough how welcoming from the very first time we came when we were greeted initially by the wonderful Terry, Myself my husband and my friends Have nothing but wonderful things to say about this place, Terry and Libby are just brilliant nothing is ever too much trouble, along with the rest of the staff who always greet us with a wonderful the food is just top notch Were working through every meal on the menu... I do always and will continue to recommend and carry on with our very regular visits, ps your not helping the waistline you know

Saturday evening was Our first restaurant outing post pandemic & it was pleasing that this restaurant is taking all the Mitigating measures required at this time.Six of us were dining & we decided to reserve one of the outdoor pods which turned out to be a unique experience all for the good.Having been to this restaurant on previous occasions our expectations were high and we were not left disappointed. Service & Food was 1st class at a more than reasonable cost. I had the Fishcake, followed by the Braised Shin of Beef & finished with the Gingerbread Pud all of which were very tasty & very well presented. I would like to thank Terry & all his staff for an outstanding evening & I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Celebrated my birthday Saturday in one of the domes in the garden and it was a unique and lovely evening. The food was delicious and the staff led by their manager were friendly & efficient. It was the perfect way to start going out for dinner again and we will definitely be returning.

We visited yesterday for lunch in one of the domes for my partner and his twin brother’s 30th birthday. The domes are fantastic and make for a real dining experience. I’d love to return to try them out in the evening.The food was impeccable but what really stood out was the kindness of the staff. I’m suffering from a stomach ulcer so can only eat plain food, and they very kindly put together an alternative meal off the menu for me - a really nice chicken dinner - a lovely moist chicken breast with fresh seasonable vegetables and a small pot of gravy. We were served by Terry who was very attentive and helpful, and we had a lovely few hours in the dome surrounded by beautiful food.Thank you to all for making our celebration a great day.

Had heard such good thing about here, but I have to say felt a little underwhelmed. The service and restaurant was lovely, but I felt the food let the side down a fraction. I had liver and my friend had the pork and we both thought it was a bit over cooked & dry. Having said that we thoroughly enjoyed our staters and puddings. Wouldn’t stop me visiting again...maybe it was just bad choices? Hopefully on our next visit it will be 5 stars.

We love bartellas and have visited many times, tonight we dined in one of their new domes. Food was fantastic as always, amazing value, I had 2 courses for £20!. Service is always outstanding, Terry can't do enough for you and is a huge asset for bartellas.Dome was lovely, was a £20 hire charge but worthwhile as it was really cosy, could of zipped it up, turned off the lights and crawled into a sleeping bag greeted by a nice fry up in the morning! Will definitely return for another meal in the domes.Thanks for a nice evening.

Visited Bartellas today and had lunch sitting in the garden. The staff were very friendly and attentive, the food was superb and the presentation was absolutely beautiful , we will return.

Not been here for a very long time , in fact probably over 6 years as Bartellas was down the road from where it is now. There were pods and outdoor seating. Lots of lights , heaters . We had booked a table as is usual now and was seated inside with social distancing which was great . Hand sanitiser on the way in . Didn’t use facilities so couldn’t comment. We went tonight on the Eat out to help out scheme. Had 2 glasses of wine , sparkling water and we both had the skate wing which was delicious, with leeks and mussels sauce , fondant potatoes and samphire . Friendly staff, lovely ambiance . Service was great . Finished with a coffee and a B52 cocktail. Will definitely come again and not leave it so long next time .

Fantastic food and staff what more can you say. We ate in one of bubbles in the garden was a unique experience.

We decided to ‘eat out to help out’ and on researching local eateries taking part discovered Bartellas. The new illuminated domes in the garden along with the attractive patio started our evening well and it just got better. We were sat inside which was spacious and welcoming. All of the staff were attentive and explained the large and varied menu. We chose a fabulous Malbec to accompany our skate wing main courses which were truly delicious. Our sweet choices were different, pannna cotta and the gingerbread pudding, again superb. It was a great evening and so pleased to have discovered this gem. Thank you Terry and team for a great job!

We chose to come here with friends, for our first meal out, since lock-down. We thought that their option of dining outdoors in a pod, was a safe way to start, and we weren’t disappointed.The pod was spacious, and fairly airy, on a hot night. The staff were helpful, friendly and very efficient. The menu had a good range of starters and main dishes, to suit all tastes.We could not fault any of the food that we chose and left only empty plates. At no time were we rushed, so we all enjoyed a relaxing evening and felt safe throughout our time there. After such an enjoyable experience, we shall definitely make a return visit, and encourage others to book.In these difficult times, we sincerely hope that this venue and business will be able to survive and flourish.

Visited today for our wedding anniversary it was our first post Lockdown meal.The welcome and service was very good and the food presented and tasted excellent.Our 3rd visit to this restaurant but won't be the last.

Visited Bartellas today on the ‘Eat out to Help out’ Scheme.It was a pleasure to be back and Dining once again at our favourite restaurant. The food as usual was first class and the Service was fantastic. The Staff were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, nothing was too much trouble. The tables in the restaurant were very well spaced, everything was well sanitized before and after each customer, we felt in a very safe environment. Will definitely be returning in the near future.
