The Gardeners in Chelmsford

We just got back from a children's Halloween party with two of our grandchildren at the Gardner's and as ever the event was superbly run by Lee, Wendy, Sarah and the team, nothing was too much trouble. We actually messed up and missed the booking deadline for the party but the team bent over backwards to accommodate and entertain our grandchildren. How Lee does it I've no idea but the pub manages to cater for all members of the community from sports fans to families, youngsters to OAPS (like us) . We even had a scooter rally a few weeks ago which again was superbly accommodated and as far as I'm aware extremely well run. Our four year old Grandson calls the Gardner's his mates pub (Lee) and I'm guessing that clients of all ages feel the same way. Superb!

Fantastic place to eat with the family. Never had bad food in here. The guy in charge works his arse off running around for everyone. Would recommend to anyone. Bad point is that it's always hot in there, not sure if windows actually open but fire doors are always closed. Shame there isn't a play area for the kids as this is a lovely family pub and we would happily stay longer for a couple more drinks however it's so warm in there we eat and go.

Usual pub food offerings, but sub-standard quality. You get what you pay for. Positives - Great Gammon, piping hot chips, beautifully cooked eggs. Some pleasant staff. Negatives - Undercooked onion rings and peas. Dried out fudge cake. Dirty cutlery. Dirty glass was asked to be replaced, but the dirty one was rinsed, wiped, and returned. TV channel was changed to show football whilst people were watching the program that was on already, and who had no interest in football, which was already on another large tv anyway. Overall, it is highly disappointing. Voting with my feet, which won't be crossing their threshold again.

Went there for a quick lunch and a drink. Food was ordered and delivered quickly. No issues at all. Pub has a slightly odd layout but no big issue.

Popped in for a soft drink and quick game of darts, nice to see new board! Perfect hour spent

The pub has a lovely atmosphere. Food is so so but you can't beat the price! Service is 5 star. Plenty of parking. Dog friendly too.

Just been for a quiet lunch by myself for couple of pints and a read of my book. I go regulary to unwind for me time. Everytime I go in im welcomed by Wendy and sarah who make me feel at home with their chatter and happiness please keep up.xxx

Was made welcome by staff. There was a gentleman behind the bar whose name I unfortunately can’t remember but I’m hoping that the manager Lee (who is amazing) will let him know. We asked Lee his name & I’m hoping our names Liz & Glyn will remind Lee to pass on. All the staff worked hard & coped so well when the England games were on. I hope that Green King realise what a great team they have there & a great manager in Lee!!!

Popped in for a quick drink and was pleasantly surprised. Great service and comfortable surroundings.

Great food great atmosphere probably my favourite pub

Not sure where to start . The lasagne was incredibly vile . The katsu curry was from a bag. I was so deflated that we paid and left . Realised on way out it was a green king establishment. If I o LCY had k own I would have gone to an independent. Absolutely shocking . Paid and left to never return to a 60 s pub in a housing estate .

Love this pub, food is great and atmosphere is always buzzing. As they say, when in doubt, always go to Gardeners. The only suggestion I have is to please extend your kitchen timing and include some cocktails 🍸. There is a car charging point, too, which is handy.

Food good service good meals we ordered very good an all round excellent time

This place is the ideal if you want classics but not too expensive. 12.49 for 2 classics is like a crazy deal, and the portion is big. You get to play snooker so you're ain't bored and the giant Yorkshire pud is sooooo good. Also the prices are excellent and worth because adding a giant pud to your Sunday roast for just 1 quid is very worth it. Great as a family restaurant as they have a food section and a bar section. Also very cosy atmosphere. Highly recommended!

A great local for a few drinks, catch the footie or have lunch/dinner with the family. We've been coming here for around a year now for a family dinner, food is great, well very reasonably priced and atmosphere is also good.

Great pub for sports always busy when I've visited. The food is good and they have a great selection of beers and spirits. Staff are amazing. I've been in when very busy, and they have got it nailed behind the bar! Well oiled team 👏🏻

I enjoyed my 50th birthday celebrations watching the Wales England rugby followed by a live band. Bar staff were super friendly and helpful, landlord was really great ensuring my friends family and I had a fantastic night 🥳🥳

Fried pub food. 2 meals for 12 pound so cheap if thats your main criteria but everything is fried. Staff were friendly. Bar was busy with the regulars.

WOW WOT CAN I SAY. WE HAD A BIG OF US TO THERE TONIGHT. THE FOOD WAS BANG ON. COULDNT FOUGHT IT. OT ALL CAME OUT TOGETHER. SAME WITH THE PUDDING. STAFF WERE VERY FREINDLY. THE MANAHER WHAT A LOVELY GUY. EVEN SAVED MY NIECES LITTLE GIRL FROM FALLING OUT OF THE HIGH CHAIR. AS SHE DECIDED TO SAT UP. 5 XXXXX . DEFENTLY RECOMMEND. VERY REASONABLE.

Great little local pub serving proper pub grub at a great price, burgers and fish and chips a must try. Friendly staff, great times, been coming here since I was a boy at least 30 years ago, and definitely improved over The years. See you xmas day

We had our family Christmas dinner at the Gardeners yesterday, eight adults and seven children, three courses and all absolutely superb. If there was an award for the perfect community pub the Gardeners should be in contention, easily the best run pub in Chelmsford and one of the best in the country. Huge thanks to Lee, Sarah and the team for looking after us so well.

Had a breakfast there, was good with friendly service.

We had our works Christmas meal here last night approximate 30 of us in the restaurant we all had a great time, the food was served piping hot and all nicely cooked. The service was friendly and very obliging. Would not hesitate to come back again.

Lee and all the team are just great. There is always a warm welcome from every single member of staff, nothing is too much trouble! We had a girls get together with the festive menu on Friday. Table was laid out all nice, food was good and ridiculous value for money.

There was a young lady by the name of Sarah who was so helpful , she knew everything I asked and them some. They made me feel very welcome and would highly recommend popping down for a hangover.

Wendy is absolutely lovely. I've been coming in for months now and she's always there with wonderful service and hugs for me and the dog! All the staff are incredible and I can't fault them, or the service at all. So happy this is my local!

Had a few drinks and a lovely lunch here yesterday. Friendly and welcoming staff and a good atmosphere. Fab local pub! Sports area, food area and outside benches to to catch a few late summer rays.

Very friendly staff, good selection of food but service for dessert was a bit slow.

Had an amazing time here in a special area which was reserved for my granddaughters birthday. There were 12 of us and we were here for lunch. I can't fault it. The staff were so helpful and all the meals came out at the same time and were piping hot. My compliments to the chef. Every meal I have had here has been perfect and there is a great choice. Also nice sitting out ares. A big thank you to Lee who helped to make it a perfect day

This establishment looks nothing from the outside but once in this place you soon find out what a welcoming place this is. The staff are the best I have ever met. The food is always excellent and for the prices they charge is a true bonus. I take a group of pensioners here regularly and the staff just cannot do enough for us.

Gr8 pub for groups and very dog friendly. Normal Greene King grub, could maybe do with cooking extras a bit more.

Food was ok but beer (Real Ale) choice was poor - just two and not very inspiring ones either.

Great local restaurant/pub that is large, with large food menu and huge portions at probably the best pricing I have seen in the UK. Fantastic selection of food, beer and wines with very large portions. Great atmosphere but more focused on sports bar. However it is cozy and nicely decorated. One thing I love is they are very pet friendly, specially dogs. I would definitely come back and never leave hungry. Do not expect Michelin star food but it is completely recommeneded.

Poor food Nothing good I can say about this pub Food come and it was cold in the middle been warmed up in a microwave. Pie was rubbish Rude people at the bar. Never again No steak No gammon No burgers

Outstanding sports pub, best in Chelmsford by a long long way! Great value food and drink. Staff are nothing short of amazing. Wouldn’t go anywhere else to watch sport. Fantastic pub!!!

First time visitors , 6 of us for lunch , very busy and apparently short staffed, you would not have known that, all the staff were working their butts off, the starters came out promptly, all red hot and freshly done, the chicken wings and ultimate sharer went down a treat with everyone. The various mains were tasty and the roast dinner was huge. The drinks were a reasonable price and it was nice a couple of us could have a cup of tea. I think it is usually regulars that go there as we did get some inquisitive looks from some other customers, but nothing unfriendly. Would certainly visit again as the total bill for all of us including drinks was £92. Absolute bargain. Well done to all the staff and special mention to the cook/s for tasty , well cooked food.

Meal of Sunday lunch ok but choose Turkey over the beef. Dessert excellent

Came down for the quiz night on Saturday. Had a great time. Excellent service & amazing nachos. They even found the ear phones I had dropped and picked up a couple of days later 😊

Nice pub, good meal deals and drink offers, cute little outside area as well. Enjoyed playing pool; darts and other games are available here.

Tried to book table. They do not answer the phone. We booked for 6 over email. When we arrived, there was only a table for four. They brought two extra chairs, but did not move us or bring an additional table. Only four to eat then!

This pub has really gone up in atmosphere, food and generally everything. Loved seeing the live singers the other night and always welcoming and friendly bar staff :)

Definitely a place to spend an early evening with family, welcoming and caring staff.

We attended here for our wedding reception of all places. It was very easy to book and we had a whole area to ourselves, the staff were fantastic and very friendly, we even got a free bottle of wine upon arrival. Everyone got their food quickly and to a high quality. If anyone is thinking of having their reception or any kind of a large party here I would highly recommend it
