Barrafina in City of London, Westminster

Booked for an early lunch with a friend and we were both underwhelmed. The good points….lovely buzzy atmosphere, great seeing the food prepared and pleasant service. However, some of the food felt distinctly undercooked - runny and soft e.g. piquillo with smoked eel (couldn’t taste any fish and was squidgy and not a pleasant texture), cuttlefish croquettes - they were cold inside and the filling mushy though the taste was ok, the tortilla was swimming in liquid….was it undercooked egg? Not very pleasant. The skate was overcooked on one side and it’s not a good look when the best thing you had was the pear salad. Based on our experience we decided we wouldn’t eat at Barrafina again.

Wow! Just wonderful food, every time, at every branch of Barrafina! Authentic Spanish food, and a joy to watch it being prepared.

Great food but as a long time fan, I have to say the prices have gone crazy! Way too expensive for what you get so sadly will be taken off my list of go to’s

Would agree with other reviews that the price for what you get has started to get a little silly. Been eating at Barafina since the good old days of their first restaurant. The food quality remains good, but a couple of my favourite dishes are much smaller and more expensive. Tiny portion of Chipirones now and Romesco Chicken over £20? That’s a £14 dish maximum for 3 small chicken thighs. I remember telling one of the chefs in the original restaurant how good the Chipirones were and he gave me another portion for free. Can’t see that happening under a chain model, and at this price point the food is far superior in this format at The Barbary. Such a shame - was good while it lasted.

Very good food. Small portions. And quite simply too expensive. £190 for two, with 2 glasses of wine each. Rushed out the door in about an hour feeling unsatisfied. Not a place to linger. Counter top seating only, facing the chefs. I personally like this arrangement for two people, but it won’t work for everyone. Appears to be run as a money machine and has lost the ethos and formula that made Barrafina special. I would not return to either of their locations after this. Needs a good clean. Really need to provide napkins.

We love the food and the staff are great, friendly and helpful. Its not cheap for a stool but the the food makes up for that.

Hundreds of flies all over the ceiling & buzzing about in February 2024. Food was great but noticed the flies about halfway through and lost our appetites.

A delicious place for your lunch at the bar, an express cuisine before your eyes! You will be greeted by Angelo (pictured) who will be able to explain the menu and every dish (even in Italian!) with great friendliness. The fish is well cooked, the tortillas succulent the dishes of the day special. At the end you can drink a real Italian espresso coffee (Illy coffee is the best one).

I last visited this wonderful little restaurant about 8 years ago and am delighted to confirm that is has managed to improve in every respect. First and foremost the flavour of the food is simply awesome. My first tapa was Pan con Tomate (£7.50). A simple national dish with minimum moving parts but the thick slice of bread dipped in premium olive oil then popped into a hot oven to ensure crispness was a sound start. Top with real tomato pulp infused with garlic and placed before this hungry customer was food paradise. I spent more than 6 months studying in Spain before making countless visits around the country on business and holiday over the years and I promise you that this was as good as I can remember. This was followed by two Ham Croquetas (£8.00) straight from the deep fat fryer so hot with a meltingly wonderful ham and cheesy filling. Such perfection again, Finally I selected the Milk Fed Lamb Kidneys (£14.00) and watched with awe as six little pieces of meat marinated in an oil and parsley dressing was placed into the Josper charcoal oven. The kidneys were turned to ensure even cooking and soon they were on a metal plate with hot charcoal underneath - pure mini theatre and a visual treat in front of me. They were hot tender and so full of flavour. With an Estrella Galicia beer, service and these three fantastic tapas my total bill was just under £40.00. Cant wait to return for another Iberian flavour sensation.

I recently had the opportunity to try out Barrafina, Adelaide Street branch, with friends, for the very first time, as a pre-Xmas catch-up over dinner. What a lovely experience it proved to be. The tapas dishes were shared between the 3 of us including - padron peppers, patatas bravisimas, salted cod (Catalana style - laid on a bed of mashed sweet potato, and wilted spinach on the side), chicken thigh and Romesco sauce, plus Txistorra (being a chorizo-styled tortilla), for the mains, and then indulging in 2 desserts, Milhojas and a scrumptious baked cheesecake. You could not fault the food - it was truly delicious fare! A good selection of wines were also on offer, so we allowed ourselves a glass of wine each, to share with our meal. As we were sat up at the bar, we saw staff preparing the dishes right before our eyes behind the counter. And they were more than happy to answer our questions about the various dishes being prepared in turn. It was quite busy, and this particular branch doesn't have much in the way of table dining available as such - although it was quite cosy. It might be nice to try one of the other branches, and compare however. The staff were lovely too - very attentive and engaging, and really enjoying what they were doing, with lots of banter going on too. A very entertaining and enjoyable atmosphere. Be prepared for a costly outing however - even if we are talking high-end tapas. However, once in a while, it's really great to treat yourself!

Booked lunch here for 4 of us pre-theatre (matonee) but hadn't realised there are no tables, you sit at the bar in a row, might be aithentic but makes conversation tricky. I don't think they want you to linger. Food came in spurts, and while it was tasty especially the tomato bread the portions were small for the price. Not a fan of the tortilla with runny egg yolk in the middle. Wine seemed expensive. No music or ambience, seemed more like a diner, and staff are efficient rather than charming. We were done in less than an hour when we'd booked early to allow for a more leisurely lunch. And when we left we felt like we'd paid for lunch but only had a snack.

We were looking for somewhere to have a late lunch and my daughter knew of this place. It was about 2.45pm, very busy, and we didn’t have a reservation. However, they managed to squeeze us in, with a gentle reminder that we would need to order before 3pm as the kitchens were due to close. So possibly we ordered in haste, certainly we ordered too much as the portion sizes were bigger than expected. We asked the lady behind the bar for a wine recommendation, and received glasses of white wine with a gentle fizz. Not what I would have normally ordered but it complemented the food perfectly. We were hugely appreciative of the effort to ‘fit us in’ and on another day I’d like to go back and maybe explore the menu options a little more both in terms of quantity, and variety. All that we ate was well prepared and tasty, I just felt at the end I had ordered dishes that were a little too similar to each other to really explore the variety that tapas usually affords. My bad, not the restaurant’s. This was very tasty food in a busy and energetic atmosphere, and service delivered by nice, customer focused people. I will certainly look for an opportunity to go back, and maybe accept more recommendations for what to try from the menu. The food isn’t cheap, but is prepared carefully and presented properly.

Always been a fan of the Adelaide St Barrafina, but hadn’t been back for a while after a slightly disappointing lunch at the Soho branch - anyway, I visited with my mum last week and had an excellent lunch. The highlight was definitely the gambas rojas, and the lambs kidneys were so tasty too. My only gripe is how expensive Barrafina is now. I know prices have gone up everywhere but they seem to have gone up A LOT at Barrafina the past few years (food and wine). It’s now more a place to go to for a treat rather than whenever I’m in the area. Definitely still recommend tho.

Fantastic tapas spot. Excellent food and service. Highly suggest booking in advance, its difficult to get in, but once you're there sit back and enjoy. We were sitting in front of the head chef, and what amazed us is that every dish must pass through him before its served to a customer. Showcases excellent detail to quality.

Very good food but spent the meal watching a very nice lady dry all the cutlery ( from lunch service ) and sort it into a drawer. Ended up laughing with her when she had finished which was as we finished our meal. Not really what I’d expect considering price of food. Having eaten at the Dean Street restaurant it was a disappointment in comparison.

We have been to this place before and decided to return as we love the food. I shall not be returning. The food is good but the unwelcoming approach is not something that leaves a good taste in you even if the food is good. I booked a table a month ago and arrived to be told to sit right next to the door and facing very away from the bar. They had spaces that were apparently being kept for other clients. After a short delibaration we were eventually given another bar table. Upon sitting the waiteress offered us drinks on the house (No, I am not referring to the free water as this was offered separately!) that later on appeared on the bill. I assume that she forgot of the incident....all in all, left an unpleasant feeling in me despite the nice food. Will not return.....

The last restaurant meal we had before the second lockdown was here and the first since opening up also..may 19. Still just superb with a few new dishes; monkfish cheeks; lamb shank. And the usuals just tops, courgette and flower, padrons, delicious salads. It’s the cooking plus the dressings and herbs and spices that make it so good. My favourite pud, miholjas were superb with cloves, cinnamon and something else (?) in the cream… just great.. albarino and cava go down a treatThese guys know what they are doing…bon chance!

After a long time of trying to get to Barrafina after work on a city day.....we finally were able to book a table and try it out. As it was just the two of us the counter seats where our sanctuary. A very clean and bright interior with a well poised crowd to match. We sampled some of the more popular dishes. It’s not the cheapest and I did leave feeling peckish but ultimately valued the experience of great wine and food. The gentleman serving us was a delight and a regular couple sitting of our right gave multiple suggestion. I would return! Thank you guys xx

Very enjoyable experience. Food was tasty and original and the atmosphere very lively. The sherry was also nice. I would recommend with one caveat - thet ables are only given for 1.5 hours, which is a little short.

For me Barrafina has very good concept, I highly recommend if you are going to the Theater before the show. Very good service and good quality. Amazing selection wines. Siendo español, tuve que probar algunas cosas buenas en torno a las tapas en Londres, lo mejor se encuentra en Andalucía, en mi opinión. . . ; )Lo que me encantó de Barrafina, Adelaide street; fue una gran tortilla de patatas con huevo, líquida y unctious, vinos españoles increíbles y de calidad (probamos 8 entre nosotros), pan casero fantástico, Crema Catalana, la mejor y más adecuada que he probado en el Reino Unido (mi madre catalana). . lo último está en Prades, Catalunya, Barrafina está bastante cerca.Así que en el lado de la comida. . . Me encantó lo anterior. . . También tenía croquetas de calabaza, excelente ejecución, pero faltaba un sabor fuerte que se necesitaba alrededor de Bechamel. . muy soso. Brochetas de sepia (sepia) (ensartadas): trozos muy pequeños de trozos de sepia muy finos / presentados con frugalidad, untados con más salsa que los trozos de sepia reales, menú "asado a la parrilla". . . descripción no lograda realmente. Los chipirones tenían demasiada pasta, no suficientes mariscos para mí.Gran servicio, el maitre di fue amable, acogedor y un gran profesional. Good food, but I was shocked after seeing that nobody (not even the chefs!!!) was using mask, visor or gloves. Nothing at all. Shouldn’t be allowed now.

Visité como parte del plan de comer fuera para ayudar, pero muy preocupado por el nivel de gestión de riesgos de Covid. La bandera roja era el gerente / frente de la casa abrazándose y estrechándole la mano a un comensal / amigo en la entrada.Buena comida como siempre, pero me mantendría alejado por ahora. La gestión de riesgos de Covid incluye controles de temperatura y geles en la entrada, y el lavado de botellas de agua sin gas. Genial, pero eso es todo. Los camareros se acercan a su cara para hablar sobre el menú y se inclinan sobre su hombro para quitar los platos. El problema es que ninguno de los miembros del personal lleva máscaras o viseras. Sugiero que los clientes escriban los pedidos o los envíen electrónicamente a través de una aplicación para minimizar la proximidad al personal.Evítelo hasta que se tomen a covid más en serio y protejan mejor al personal y a los clientes.

Reservé una mesa para una comida entre semana que formaba parte del plan de comer fuera, el restaurante estaba lleno.Pedí el pan de tomate, los buñuelos de bacalao salado, mi marido pidió las costillas, además pedimos las bravas de patata todo estaba delicioso.Nunca comí aquí antes a los dos nos encanta la comida española y volveremos.El servicio fue excelente.

the food was lovely and lovely everything we ordered. would highly recommend the fish croquettes and the ribs the great thing is you can watch your food being prepared just in front of you service was good and staff friendly and welcoming

Auténticas tapas con un toque moderno. Este lugar sirve buena comida, pero las porciones son pequeñas y un poco caras. El servicio fue bueno, pero nos sentimos muy apresurados. Es un lugar pequeño y necesitan cambiar las tornas, pero nos dieron la factura sin pedirla y hubiéramos gastado más dinero en bebidas y postres si hubiéramos tenido la oportunidad. La sabrosa comida es la única razón por la que le he dado 4 estrellas.

Terrific lunch cannot fault it in anyway. Each portion just the right size. One of my favourite restaurants in London great vibe. Everything done well great service not over fussy just right Will return soon

We had a photo of the menu from when we were in London last year and when we compare the prices they had done up and we certainly noticed that in the bill. No denying the food is lovely and as someone who goes to Spain 5/6 times a year it does feel quite authentic however you will need a lot of food to fill up and the bill then quickly gets expensive. For 2 we paid £175 and while we had a very enjoyable couple of hours we weren't exactly full when leaving. It has got to the price point where I'd prefer go somewhere else in London. Especially factoring in you can't book so you either join the queue outside before the place opens to get a seat in the first sitting or you arrive and wait for an unknown period of time! We left disappointed.

We hired the private dining room downstairs, when I arrived at the restaurant looking at peoples food on the way in I had high hopes, how wrong could I have been! The paella was dry and just tasted of paprika, the pork belly dish was ok but had raw garlic on top, the creme catalana was basically scrambled egg with a sugar lid! Avoid the private dining at all costs

Excellent tapas. Great location near the Strand. A most enjoyable dinner (birthday party taking over whole of the downstairs about 18 people). Lots of sharing platters. Exquisite lemon sole - tasted like it was caught that morning.

Absolutely delicious food. Truly one of the nicest tapas meals I’ve ever had! Only negative is that we were told there was a 20 min wait for a table on arrival - the host persuaded us to stay by saying we could order a drink and bar snack while we waited for a table and then we were promptly ignored for 20 minutes! The staff definitely noticed us but we were very deliberately ignored which was frustrating. as we would have ordered a drink and olives while we stood waiting.

Absolutely delicious but tiny portions, tiny space, and large bill. Only suitable for parties of two. The space is very small and there is no waiting room.

At 12.15 I am the first lunch customer and the lined up staff, clearly chomping at the bit, greet me like a Lord, eager to get me chomping too. I am swiftly served a cold manzanilla and prawn croquettes. Bread and olive oil takes a bit longer. Grilled Cod Catalan on a bed of spinach, tomatoes, onions and covered in grilled gratinated aioli takes longer still. It's a large portion of fish and takes another glass of manzanilla to help it swim down. Great dishes; a blissful venue; but after more than one hour in the restaurant, service could have been snappier. Barrafina is a happy place with smiley staff, but getting a bit expensive. The bill - after deducting an incorrect item and adding £6.25 service charge- at over £50 is a bit top heavy.

I had a very bad experience there. We were asking for a table for 4 and the waiter told us 10 minutes but result in 50 minutes of waiting. After 50 minutes, we were placed in a table at a corner and the seating was dark and squeezed. We asked if we can swap to a nearby table saying we could squeeze ourselves in after seeing a table for three was available. We got rejected with huge arrogance from the waitress saying that the table was for three. I really have no idea where the arrogance was coming from. Not sure if they have any discrimination on our race. A manager came to us after we decide to leave. But we had no interest of staying there anymore. I’ll give no recommendation for the place and it’s going to be my first and last time there.JUST DON’T STAY IF THEY SAY THERE WILL BE A TABLE SOON FOR 4 PEOPLE.

A Sunday lunch favorite. Have to time it right or you can end up queuing too long. I get there around 14.15, with usually little or no wait. Food is top notch Spanish tapas with cervesas on tap. Doesn't get much better.
