We went to a party political dinner at Barnsgate Manor, and were really sorry that we did so. To start with the collected party members were boring and without conversation, but the meal was truly dreadful, together with the service. Meals were just plonked down, many of them in front of the wrong people, and replaced with bad grace. One man at our table was given the wrong starter and the wrong main course, and it took an argument to get what he had pre-ordered - and reconfirmed earlier that evening! Bread rolls were not offered, you got whatever the man serving them (who happened to be the manager) decided to give you. I did not touch mine, and when I caught his attention, I asked whether I could have brown instead of white. He did change it over, but with a very bad grace. The turkey was thin slices and very dry, quite obviously not off a turkey roasted that evening but bought in, and the veggies were soggy. And for the first time in my (quite long!) life, I could not eat my Christmas pudding. It was a small, bought-in pud, exceedingly dry and absolutely tasteless. A truly awful meal. We had been warned that things have deteriorated badly at Barnsgate Manor, but if this meal is now representative of the current management and standards, it thoroughly deserves the bad reputation. We certainly will not be visiting again.

I went there for a Christmas Meal on Saturday evening. The three courses were excellent and the main came warm served on warmed plates which I think is quite a feat when serving so many people at the same time. There was a magician who was very good and afterwards music and dancing in the basement. Everyone who went with our group had a most enjoyable evening.

My wife and I have visited Barnsgate three times in October, twice for dinner and once for lunch, and on each occasion the food and service has been absolutely superb. Even the bread and oil nibbles are cooked to order. The menu is sensibly limited so main dishes are all obviously freshly prepared. Staff are polite and friendly, parking is plentiful and the surroundings are delightfully scenic. Highly recommended.

A big thank you to the chef for preparing my food separately due to my severe allergy, it was tasty and plated beautifully. Lots of parking too and beAutiful views

We needed a venue to cater for Ethiopian guests as well as British, and were delighted that the management were so helpful as we were providing Ethiopian food. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were serving our meal. Main meal was excellent and the chef provided a delicious evening buffet and also some take-away boxes for those who needed to travel back to London. They made everyone welcome and our Ethiopian friends loved the location. Have had numerous meals there and have never had a poor meal. Would thoroughly recommend for any occasion.

My friend and I had an amazing afternoon tea today at Barnsgate. We were treated to fresh wild flowers on a pristine laid table for two. We were served by the Assistant Manager, who was friendly, chatty and professional, attending to our needs for tea and coffee, despite it being busy, he and his team were attentive to the customers and to us. He detailed the array of sandwich fillings and exquisite small cakes plus two different very tasty scones. We sadly could not manage all the cakes, but this was not without trying. Not a problem for the waiting staff, who gave us two boxes to decant the serving plate and take home! What wonderful service and I can only add that in my personal view of 'afternoon tea' at various venues around East Sussex, Barnsgate rates highly and good value for the price. Brilliant job Barnsgate, well done and thank you.

Lovely location, however food was average and the service was done of the worst we’ve had. Plates were thrown in front of us and if it was the incorrect course it was just left anyway. Nobody came round to ask if anyone wanted more drinks during dinner and the waiters were very rude, not what you expect for £85 a head on Christmas Day. I too, felt I needed to write a review after reading an earlier one, we were there on Sunday for lunch, and many times before also, it is a regular restaurant we tend to go to. We have always had a good meal, always hot and plenty of it, and the staff are second to none, they are really amazing, friendly and nothing too much trouble. Graham has served us lots of times and is very attentive towards his customers and all alike. To be honest I can't really believe I read a review like the one earlier, sounds like they were in a different place. As for a photo of carpets, its not something you change every other week, they are very lucky to still get linen table cloths and napkins also. I would recommend food and service of the staff of this place to anyone. Don't let the earlier review put you off going to Barnsgate. Just felt I had to write this review.

After seeing the review below I felt I had to write this review as I was also there for a family lunch on Sunday and would like to say how impressed we as a family were with the service ( also by Graham who could not have been more attentive and efficient )and the quality of the food and value for money. Graham was kind enough to let us take the wine home that we had not drunk and it was our wine that was being decanted into the one bottle to take away. We are regular visitors to Barnsgate Manor and cannot rate or praise it high enough. As for moaning about the decor .. it is a beautiful old country building with stunning views which we appreciate rather than modern glitzy buildings. My advice is to go and experience this wonderful restaurant and tea rooms as I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Went here for a family birthday 15 of us had to wait 45 minutes for drinks service appalling had originally booked for 14 when we said was for 15 stormed of and said you will have to wait now and threw a chair at the end of the table laid so not that hard accommodate one more person!!! Food was awful my sister and myself had duck liver pate which was so bad no one would eat it and resembled dog mess on a plate. We then had trout with asparagus which came with two very small burnt roast potatoes others had roast but vegetables was so slow to come out and then served to us that the food was cold before veg was served. Several times we had to ask for water and was told by Graham I am busy you will have to wait!! Attitude was a joke clearly understaffed not happy that Graham had 15 of us to take orders from and serve. Several of us ordered drinks which never came so we gave up and one of us actually went and got 2 bottles of wine so we had somethink to drink!!! Nobody came asked how our food was if everythink was ok needed anythink and if it hadn't been a birthday celebration I would have walked out. The carpets are filthy the skirting boards full of dust and dirt the napkins all frayed and torn would never go back Graham was a terrible host with attitude beyond belief and my sister and myself even witnessed him tipping the wine from one bottle to another that others had left obviously to resell. I have never been anywhere where the service was so appalling and the food so bad I would bend over backwards to accommodate a party of 15 and we would have spent considerably more money on wine drinks if we could have got served!!Made me laugh that in toilets it states they cater for weddings yet can't serve 15 !!! I went to Barnsgate Manor today to meet with my friends at a lunch group we attend. I had been looking forward to lunch on the terrace, unfortunately the weather was not kind to us and we had to eat inside. The service was attentive and friendly, we had four people serving us, friendly and helpful throughout. Most people went through to the bar to buy their drinks but I am sure if we had asked for them to be brought to the table this would not have been too much trouble. We had pre-ordered from a set menu at a specially negotiated price. I had opted to have all three courses as the choices looked interesting, and as I have to avoid gluten so this is not often an option. The bread basket looked interesting with a variety of rolls and tiny loaves, my neighbour had a walnut loaf which she said was delicious, though I think it might have been nice if diners could choose which roll they had. My gluten free roll arrived separately and was really excellent, unlike the rather chalky lump I get in some places (sometimes there is not option at all1!) I had smoked duck as a starter, a very meaty dish with a gently smoked flavour, accompanied by a nicely tart plum sauce. For the main I had chosen the slow roasted lamb with fennel relish, partly as it sounded good but also because the other choices contained pastry or couscous. The vegetables were brought round separately and included roast potatoes, sugar snap peas, broccoli, cauliflower and roasted carrots with parsnips. This was possible my one grouch as I prefer the vegetables to be very lightly cooked and these had been overcooked to my mind. Equally I was with a group of elderly people who came from an age when that was the norm, so they were happy. The portions were very generous and after the first slice of lamb I was struggling and decided that I would share the treat with my dog. Two of my neighbours then donated more and when I asked for a "doggy bag" we had the meat returned in the form of an aluminium swan (cute). Everyone on our table had opted for the Pavlova for pudding and according to taste, some raved over it while I felt it was fairly basic, a few slices of fruit arranged on a mound of cream, home made meringue though. Coffee/tea were included in our deal. All in all we all really enjoyed this meal, not perfect but a very good midweek lunch. Oh, and my retriever just loved his surprise treat too!

Visited with family for a birthday celebration. Sandwiches, scones and cakes all lovely. Beautiful views. It would have been nice to have been greeted on arrival, we had to wait in the entrance until a waiter went by, all seemed busy and not keen to make eye contact. However once we got his attention he sorted us out well.

A table was booked for a party of 10 yesterday. Everyone said how lovely the food was. I had a most enjoyable dinner with my friends round me for my special birthday. Can't fault anything. Good food, lovely friends and excellent service. Wonderful setting. When my husband paid the bill we were shocked - very good value. We shall be back again and I want to book our Christmas Day Dinner again as last year was exceptional. Well done Barnsgate Manor.

Unfortunately felt really old fashioned and clientele ancient, felt like eating in a nursing home despite the wonderful surroundings

Today must have made the total of our visits to over 10 Without exception we have enjoyed excellent food beautifully served by a very friendly competent staff on each occasion. The location and lovely views on a warm summers day are perfect for outdoor eating, whilst the dinning rooms are very cosy in winter. This restaurant offers very good value in a perfect venue, we cannot fault it.

So we have been to this restaurant several times and are impressed but the food and service. This Saturday we arrived for lunch and had the whole restaurant to ourselves a little odd. I know the weather wasn't great and this place is a little out of the way.But service was good, the food for lunch is a good mix of classic recipes served well in fairly big potions. All in all I always enjoy it here.

This restaurant never seizes to amaze me, decided on a visit for lunch, the food and presentation was excellent, the prices very reasonable. Certainly cheaper menu than many of the pubs around, and all freshly cooked and not the frozen ping food that's in the pubs now days.

My Daughter got married 28th May 2016.....Wow...The service was in a little chapel small but beautifully done. We all sat down to the wedding breakfast, food was amazing... waiter service on each table, staff were great and very friendly. The views are stunning lovely countryside setting so perfect for photos. We had a BBQ for the evening which was great....people danced ate and drunk the night away to a disco which also was brilliant and requests played, and the bar staff were excellent. Highly recommend Barnsgate Manor for a wedding. Thank you all for making it such a perfect day.

Went for a group Sunday Lunch. An amazing time. The staff took care of everything with a very varied menu to select from. The portions of food together with the quantity were excellent and the service was also outstanding. Will definitely return for Sunday lunch again in the future but booking in advance may be necessary. Well recommended and very good value for money as well.

Lunch at Barnsgate Manor Hotel is always a pleasant experience. The food is always piping hot, an ample serving, by an attentive regular staff. It was a clear sunny day on 13th April so the view towards the South Downs just added to the memorable visit. If it was nearer than a 70 miles round trip I would certainly be sampling their menu more frequently than every couple of months.

When I am walking in the High Weald I try always try and fit in a trip to Barnsgate Manor. After a long walk there is something wonderful about looking out towards the South Downs in the tea rooms with a piece of cake or a cream tea. I was lucky enough to visit Barnsgate Manor for lunch with a walking group at the weekend for Sunday lunch. It was fantastic. One of the best Sunday lunches I have had for a while. Good portion at a reasonable price. This has to be one of my favourite places to eat in the High Weald.

A large group of hungry Ramblers stopped here on Sunday 3rd April for lunch. The service was excellent, particularly given the size of the group. We ate on the terrace and most had the Sunday roast which I have to say was one of the best that I have had- I have posted a photo of it- the yorkshire pudding was huge! It was great value for money, good quality and well cooked beef, a good range of veg and again, well cooked. Not sure how we managed to carry on the walk after! The views from the terrace are beautiful. The photo I have posted doesn't do it justice, it really is lovely. I would highly recommend Barnsgate Manor for either lunch or afternoon tea. Will definitely be returning! :)

I had the pleasure of attending a wedding here on Sunday 27th March. The Chapel is lovely, a great place for a smaller wedding. The Registrar was really pleasant and made the service special. We then made our way to the reception room close by. The BBQ was really good, catering well for non meat eaters too. The salads were super fresh, all in all very tssty, served by friendly staff.A little later we made our way to the room downstairs where we could dance.I would highly recommend Barn state Manor.

We were delighted to find the tearooms again, and as we drove down the drive we realised it had been 16 years since our last visit! We had been seated on the terrace in the sun as it was summer time then, and we didn't expect to do the same this time of year, February. However, it would have been nice to SEE the view - the patio doors to the terrace were filthy! Reasonable choice of teas, but the scones were frozen and then microwaved and fell apart as we tried to spread the jam and cream on. It all looked very dated and tired, miss-matched curtains, dusty chairs, dirty old fish tank and a huge dark brown monstrosity of a bar. What a shame! Someone here is missing a trick. The shop had shut 5 years ago, so no English wines with our meal at home tonight. Staff were friendly, and obviously trying hard, but all-in-all very disappointing for a chance tea out. Needs some investment and better advertising. Will not bother again.

Met friends for lunch at their suggestion as midway point for us to meet up. I found the food very average, chose Roast Turkey dinner but a bit reminiscent of a school lunch. The restaurant / bar / tea room all extremely dated and lacking any atmosphere. However the very young waitresses did provide a good & polite service. Will not go back & would not recommend.

We arrived for Saturday lunch when the rain was tipping down, so we couldn't take advantage of the wonderful views that others had raved about. It's a very old fashioned restaurant and tea room, so perfect for my partners 95 year old mother - she loved it! However the food was below par for me, and more like a school dinner.

This is a smallish, intimate tearoom, cafe with views to die for. Found on the edge of the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex just off the main A26, you can sit indoors or on a delightful terrace and look over rolling countryside to the South Downs. You are warmly greeted by a couple of llamas and very friendly staff. We went for afternoon tea which offered home baked anything you could want. Hearsay tells me lunch is good too. A lovely place to meet friends or call in on your way south towards the coast.

Today a friend and I took our lovely friend out to celebrate her Birthday. we entered the Tea room and almost turned tail and left! The decor was scruffy and the tearoom smelled very fishy - wafting from the restaurant or kitchen i assume. We couldn't make a fuss as it would have ruined the Birthday outing. The tea arrived. Stale, tough, microwaved scones which tasted of bicarb. awful . the tea was weak and made off the boil. horrible. The only redeeming feature of this place is the view or terrace area on a good day but that doesnt compensate for the shocking tea time 'treats'!

On the 16th of September, four of the family visited.Although the service was excellent and food served was adequately cooked, it all seemed to have come out of a jar,tin or bottle . Curry was shredded chicken and sauce, rice was just rice. No sign of anything else.I am no chef but i could have done better and shown a little imagination

I had been led to believe this was the poshest retaurant in the area, There apparently are two buildings, one which was not available, & the other which we ate in looked exactly like a chintzy tearoom. The staff were very nice, & unusually the vegetables were beautifully cooked. The rest of the food was quite good, but for £18/head (two courses, nothing too expensive, including a soft drink each) rather expensive for eating in a tearoom, & disappointing as it was a special celebration, but didn't look very special.

We recently visited as a family (25 of us) to celebrate my mothers 81st birthday, the staff were very good as my mother had only booked for 20! the extra covers arrived with out fuss. The sandwiches were nice with a good selection of fillings, the home made scones excellent with lashings of clotted cream and a quality jam. Over all a very good experience. We will be returning.

On 28th July I visited Barnsgate Manor for a Birthday Lunch for 16 people. Having had lunches there every couple of months for nearly 3 years I knew I was in for a treat. None of us were disappointed. Where necessary the plates are always hot and the food, whether a cold starter, the main course or dessert, was excellent. The welcoming, cheerful staff are always attentive, nothing is too much trouble. Unlike some establishments there seemed no urgency for us the vacate our allocated side room. The terrace offers memorable views of the Southdowns stretching from Lewes to Worthing, some 25 miles away.

Last week a group of around 40 of us visited Barnsgate Manor for lunch. Unless any of the group had dietary needs-it was a fixed menu. The chicken ham and leek pie was delicious and the vegetables were beautifully cooked. There was a choice of three desserts-all looked very nice and I wasn't disappointed with my choice of homemade pavlova topped with plump raspberries. The service was good and everyone I spoke to in the group thoroughly enjoyed their meal.

Being a bit of a Sunday roast connoisseur I’d heard good things about this pubs Sunday roasts! Booked it up (recommended) and had the three meat roast! Way too much for me BUT oh my god was it delicious. The meat was melt in mouth, Roasted potatoes just right, all homemade and with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I’ve had. The gravy stole the show, it was delicious and I’d love to know how they made it taste sooooo good! 10/10 (my first ever) I’ll be back for sure!

First visit for us to The Wheel Inn. We went there for lunch and we were not disappointed. The burgers were so good. The flavours were great, the beef was perfect and the portion size was just right. My wife had the steak which was cooked perfectly. Staff were super friendly and attentive. Everything was very reasonably priced too. All round great pub with great food and lovely staff.

We were looking for a place to have coffee and cake after Michelham Priory house and garden visit. We discovered this lively and quirky tea garden. It was very busy with groups of families and friends. It was organised and provided a friendly service.
