A stunning little coffee shop, a hidden gem amongst the little lanes of York. One of the few coffee shops around with an outside space - truly beautiful with a lot of history. On top of that the coffee is fantastic and the service is very friendly. Don't miss this beautiful coffee shop, if you come to York.

A hidden gem which we came across by chance. Sat in the outside courtyard to enjoy a drink before visiting Barley Hall. While just a few streets away it was very busy, the coffee shop was a welcome relief to find such a beautiful place to pause and rehydrate in such peaceful surroundings. The iced lattes were delicious. Thank you!

I can’t say enough good things about Barley Hall Coffee! From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with the warmest smiles and an inviting atmosphere. The staff here are truly exceptional – always friendly, helpful, and full of positive energy that makes your visit extra special. And let’s talk about the coffee! Lovely quaint little coffee shop nestled in the back streets of York . Lovely coffee and selection of cakes and scones. Had a relative with us from Canada and he was thrilled at the interior and exterior of the building that must be steeped in history over the years . Tucked away but still a steady flow of customers. Fantastic range of teas, coffees and cakes. We had a berry berry tea and americano which was lovely. Only thing was the door doesn’t close without whoever has come in or gone out physically closing it so it often remained open and it was a cold day! I did suggest to a staff member to add a spring or something but was told they tried that and then nobody could open or close the door. It hasn’t put me off, I’d still go as it’s a lovely place.

Edit: The doubling down when it’s the café staff at fault is a worse sign than getting it wrong in the first place and shows an even more toxic trait…don’t attack customers then call bystanders liars…SHOCKING While the food is mediocre…the Customer CARE is both unnerving and alarming…in short the experience we had as a consequence staff here are shocking! Having staff berate a customer over a discount appeared alarming and totally out of context, obviously the staff here are confident they can speak to customers as they like, which I always find a bad omen and suggest a toxic atmosphere which is not what anyone goes into a coffee shop for…To berate, what was clearly a regular family who said nothing wrong but the pretentious staff acted very childish and rude over a discount was weird and very unnerving, and upset my partner and I, and made us feel extremely uncomfortable and was upsetting to say the least, we were puzzled why the staff had to act in such a way…rather over the top over nothing…this all left me with a very negative opinion of this place and we were glad to leave…we will never be returning and I suggest you avoid like the plague, never had an experience like this in a cafe and hope never to again!! I find doubling down when it’s the cafe staff at fault is a worse sign than getting it wrong in the first place and shows an even more toxic trait…don’t attack customers then call bystanders liars…SHOCKING and may be learn and improve your attitudes

As York residents my wife had wanted to take me to this coffee shop on several occasions but every time we went it was shut so we were delighted it was open on our third attempt. This was about as good as it got. She tried to push me to share a scone at £4 a pop but they were very unappetising looking like they had come from a 5 for a £1 pack from poundland. The Yorkshireman in me couldn't do it so I swerved the scone. She opted for the soup and a tea whilst I just had a can of elderflower pop. We then went to sit upstairs which was very unsettling. We were up there with one other couple and it was deathly quiet, no music to break the silence, so it just felt a very uncomfortable atmosphere, We had to whisper to each other if we wanted to chat and not be overheard. This, coupled with the several large tv screens dotted about the place showing cartoon drawings of 18th century life made for a very dystopian feel. It was all quite unsettling. We didn't think it could get much worse but then my wife's food came. The soup was presented inside a large bread bun which was a nice idea but poorly executed. There were about 3 tablespoons of soup inside a very doughy bread bun in a bowl. There was so little soup it was actually rather comical and because my wife was still hungry she had to resort to the emergency mars bar she kept in her purse. We left the empty wrapper on top of the soup bowl as a sign of our dissatisfaction. I had to prop up the table with a spoon it was so wobbly so the weak tea didn't go everywhere. If the cafe was a play by William Shakespeare it would be 'A comedy of Errors'. Any problems were in no way down to the staff, they were lovely and we had zero problems with them. As a history graduate I was much looking forward to this experience but the management need a total rethink if this is going to attract anyone else bar the uninformed and unwitting tourist.

A small alleyway leads to a picturesque square and this cosy cafe with a view of the Barley Hall. Although relatively small (there is more seating upstairs which unfortunately was closed on my visit). However i was content with takeaway and even more so with the varied menu of hot drinks and delicious cakes. There was also a vegetarian savoury option which i can’t remember its name but was pleasantly surprised by. Very helpful staff who were proactive in warning people the upstairs was closed.

This is a charming little cafe, set next to the Barley Hall. I regularly stop here on my way back from walking my dog. The staff are lovely and really make you feel welcome. They offer a range of cakes and drinks which are very tasty. The service is quick, the surroundings pleasant. If you decide to sit inside the tables have glass tops covering a range of items that have been excavated nearby. You can find more out by scanning a code on each table top. I always sit in the courtyard which reminds me of the Juliet balcony in Verona. Well worth a visit!

Well, it's predecessor, the cocktail bar, Printer's Apprentice, didn't last long, so I heartily wish this newish venture every success. It has courtyard seating at the forecourt of Barley Hall. You can find it down the Snickleway connecting Stonegate to "Slugandlettucegate". Serves bakes and drinks and, though small, is somewhere really different in which to take a break. Friendly, helpful staff. Lovely interior with very quirky (and wobbly) tables and archaeological finds in glass cabinets. The wibbly-wobbly table wasn't an issue at all, as, when mentioned, twas resolved straightaway. Hot chocolate and raspberry muffin were very good. Also bought a take out cinnamon roll to have later. I picked up a loyalty card as I liked it here very much and shall be returning. Do give them a whirl. Recommended.

The cafe had a lovely feel. The tables inside looked really interesting, but we sat outside - on a table on a slope! That needs attention. Our drink was disturbed a little by recorded speech. Crockery was lovely (and chip free), gold-ish cutlery a little odd. The hot chocolate was really appreciated. The tea had stewed before it reached us. We’ll remember to ask for it to be prepared last when we next visit. The latte needed a little more work on milk texture, art and classification - we hope it will be fairly traded on our next visit. Though we did choose to try the ginger flapjack, two of us felt cheated that the tea drinker got the lotus biscuit. Excellent to serve lotus biscuits to the coffee drinkers. Thanks

We went into the Ivy not knowing anything about it but it looked inviting from the outside and it was cold and rainy and an awful weather-wise day. How pleasantly surprised we were. It seemed to be snooty and stuffy but wasn't. Beautiful atmosphere and the food was delicious. My friend had the 1917 Menu of starter and main: Salmon Rillette with avocado, salad and rye bread and main of Shepherds' Pie. I had a starter of roasted scallops with creamed spinach and potato puffs. The cost: no more than what you would've paid in a neighborhood cafe. And the rose colored ladies' bathroom is beautiful!
