Very underated, drinks in paper cups, tables dirty had to ask for a cloth to clean and we were given a serviette to do it ourselves, the place wasn't even busy staff sat at table chatting with each other. Had to go back and ask for cake(which was very average)which had been ordered with drinks, no apology. Definitely won't be going again

Can't believe that a tiny little café in Royden park (Used to be the Barking Mad Café) has reopened after C0V!D & it's now payment by "card only" & I've heard you have to order on your phone...Over £6 for a ciabatta...Used to be under £2 for a bacon & sausage butty & a pound for a coffee.. 4 staff & not a single customer... I wonder why?

I almost don't want to review it in case people start coming more! We love it here. Cheap and cheerful food. The homemade vegetable soup keeps us coming back time and time again. Great place to relax after a nice walk.

Always worth a visit when I walk my boys from the carpark at Thursaston. Court yard setting is charming if a little chaotic... Dogs, kids, etc. Super super value so please put your change in the donation box. If you have walked then you are probably kitted up to sit outside. If you have just got out of the car then pick a dry day. Lovely spot, not driven by consumerism... They have free toast... With butter for the dog, carrots too if that works... And free fruit... Go and enjoy.... Don't forget to donate!

What a brilliant little cafe, don't think it's open on a Monday but I go when I'm in Roydon for a brew and cake, they do a snack menu thats so cheap you wont believe it! I don't get the coffee as I'm not a fan but at £1 a cup it's not going to be Starbucks! Always ran by volunteers from all ages and backgrounds, feel like you're supporting something worthwhile and not being ripped off! They also have second hand books for sale which are worth a rummage, they sell duck food and have free dog biscuits and poo bags. They also did Gluten free options of cake

Run by volunteers some recovering from life events. Dog friendly, hot beverages and snacks and tempting cakes all at amazing low prices. You are meanies if you don't donate extra too!! In wet weather they have a covered area in the courtyard and if the coach house isn't being used for an art or crafts event they open it up too for shelter. This is the sort of place you should support as truly special. There is a free book library, regular craft fairs, toilets, walled garden to explore, a miniature railway to delight the kids (check opening times) and it's on the edge of the lovely Royden Park and Thurstaston Hill / Common. Walkies galore. A lovely community enterprise love it or lose it.

Not sure where the menu was but seemed limited. As the seating was outdoors my tea soon became cold. Not a place to linger on a cold day. If you have a dog and just want to wet your whistle then this is the place for you.

This little cafe is run by volunteers and is within Royden Park. The seating is all outdoors and dogs are welcome, there is water, biscuits and ‘dog toast’ on offer for free. The food and drink is very cheap and quick, consisting of sandwiches, crisps, cakes etc. It’s a great little place to stop for a quick coffee or snack whilst visiting the park. The food isn’t amazing but it’s edible. I only have coffee and a banana from there now as I tried a sandwich once and it was slathered with margarine - not quite my thing. I can definitely recommend it though as a pitstop, just be wary if you’re super fussy.

This is a wonderful little cafe and a great place to end your walk around Royden Park. Prices are extremely reasonable for teas and coffees and they have a beautiful array of cakes and other things. Some of the food coming out looked absolutely lovely - we wished we hadn't already had breakfast. It is set in a very pretty little courtyard which is well kept and has plenty of seating. Well worth the stop!

I go here with my friends and our dogs when we go for a walk in Royden park. We all love it. There are free dog biscuits and sometimes toast for the canines. I usually go in the week cos it can be very busy at the weekends. It's staffed by volunteers who do a good job and are friendly. Lots of dogs but they all behave well. Kids love it too. The prices are very good and there's plenty of choice. Of course it's instant.....its for dogs and kids too but nothing better than a toasted sausage buttie on a cold day.

The service here is local and friendly and really good value. When I bring groups of 5 children I can send them in for a piece of fruit, a drink and a bag of crisps and they still come out with change from £10 - and that includes a lovely cup of tea for me too. There are toilets and treats for the dogs too. This is basically an outdoor coffee and public toilets so don't expect luxury or central heating but that's not what it's about. Fabulous resource for families and dog walkers.

After a lovely walk from Thursaton we were in need of a hot drink and tried this little gem of a cafe. Under cover seating, dog friendly and cheap as chips. Run by volunteers it does a great trade and deservedly so . At 65p for a hot chocolate ( it's big) and deals including hot drink and a teacake for £1, you can't go wrong. I will certainly be back.

this is a volunteer run place but they take such pride and care in what they do, you cannot help but enjoy. A simple bacon and egg barm like I had last time (for £1.40) is not the last word in fine dining, but it was done WELL - which is more than the last few I have had in professional cafes were. A cup of coffee for 65p, was also very acceptable, two of my party had gluten free toasties (the gluten free bread is in a freezer) were also good. It is dog friendly , essentially a courtyard cafe, makes the trip to the park that much more enjoyable. Give yourself a simple treat.

Walks can be extended in all directions and we have never had a disappointing day out.Always capped off with a cafe stop with tea and coffee at 65p which coupled with the friendly atmosphere can't be bettered. Brings back lovely memories of days out with my dad who unfortunately is too ill now to make the trip but we still remember. You will not be disappointed at any time of year and easily competes with places further afield.Go now and enjoy!!

This cafe is in Royden Park , right at the main entrance, car park. It really is as cheap as chips , I go here often with Ruby ( my dog ) , the home made cake is ace , they had an offer on last Sunday , coffee and cake £1.50 , what a bargain , and real nice cake as well. If you have never been to Royden Park ( Franky) it's well worth the visit , small train runs of a Sunday for children and adults to ride on , the park itself is huge , more woodland type but easy to follow tracks.

I recently saw a comment from Andrew (Chester) asking was it a cafe or a Charity and thought I must give my undertsanding of the situation. During the week it is a cafe called Barking Mad who raise funds for the dogs home and various animal charities. At the weekend the friends of Royden Park actually let various other charities use the cafe in order to raise funds. These are often run by staff and volunteers whose day job is not running a cafe ! but they work hard to raise funds and the profile of the chosen charity. Often the items for sale will vary due to them being donated by supermarkets, friends of, family, etc.I work for a local cancer charity and we have the opportunity to have the cafe 4 times a year . we have lots of support and the event normally goes quite well. we had it this weekend and raised £860 ! which is a fantastic amount for tea, coffee , bacon butties and cakes.I know it may appear unreliable in what it does and who is there but just to say Thank you for your patience , support and patronage. do bear with each and every charity that takes over. I do hope this clarifies what happens at this very unique little corner . Thanks also to Friends of Royden and MIna for all their supportPatsy (Wirral )

Been a few times to Barking Mad cafe. Not sure if its a business or a charity , the cafe does have a few helpers but not sure if they are paid or volunteers. The snacks are really good quality and freshly made to order. The chunky homemade vegetable soup is very tasty. The portions are very generous.Everything is very reasonably priced. The only negative is that we have 60 mile round trip to go to Royden Park to enjoy the woodland and wildlife only to find that occasionally it is closed with no reason given.People come to rely on Barking Mad for a snack and a tea or coffee etc and I along with countless others were very disappointed that it wasnt open today. Its not the first time this has happened , where we arrive at the cafe only to find it is closed.Surely , with all the staff /volunteers at their disposal their is no reason for the cafe to be closed.

Ok so it's basic but it is tasty and you certainly can't beat it for value! Added to this, the hard working volunteers who run it plough all of the profits from their excellent value menu into local charities. They also have turned the courtyard into a pleasant haven with planters etc, ideal for a cuppa and a bacon buttie at very good prices.

It's so nice to find a dog friendly cafe. Even though it's becoming more chilly it's really sheltered and if the sun is out, quite a sun trap even in autumn. The lady running the cafe is very friendly and chatty and a wide range of simple snacks available at bargain prices. There are biscuits for the dog and sometimes an array of doggie accessories. There are leaflets to browse and books to buy. Flowers on the tables and hanging baskets complete the attractive retreat!

Lovely dog friendly outdoor cafe in the court yard at Royden Park. The courtyard cafe is operated every Wednesday to Friday and some weekends by Barking Mad (and is operated by other charity groups at other times) and offers a limited but very tasty menu that is extremely reasonably priced and always served with a smile. I would highly recommend the homemade vegetable soup - ideal after a lovely walk on a chilly day. All profits go to local charities and there is often a good selection of second hand books and dvds to raise further funds. Plenty of water bowls scattered plus free biscuits for doggy visitors and even free bread for the ducks on the nearby mere (P.S. the photo by the page title is not this cafe)

ordered food and it took about an hour and a half to come. When it came toast was literally charcoal! we asked for no tomatoes in breakfasts and they put tomatoes in 2 of the breakfasts also asked for mushrooms and they didn’t put mushrooms on. I called and had to speak to 3 different people who kept taking the phone off eachother and all were very rude didn’t resolve my problem told i was going to be waiting ages because they were busy even though it was there fault and they continued to say just get a refund through just eat. Never ordering again! Hash browns also had green inside 🤢
