Stunning food, wasn't sure what to expect (as was recommended by Mig at the Lamp) but was blown away by the food, we visited at the end of December as a party of 6 and honestly the food was top notch, the wine was awesome too, will 100% be going back the next time we are in Penzance,

Had a wonderful dinner with the family in the Barbican Bistro. Excellent, creative dishes made with fresh ingredients. We shared between us all dishes, so it allowed us to try most of the menu (it is not long), and everything was delicious. Service was friendly and attentive and the space is very welcoming.

Such a great transformation of the old venue. The hostess was warm and welcoming. The food was sublime...so fresh and tender, beautifully cooked. And the wine, although not cheap, was delicious. I can't wait to revisit at different times of year to experience the seasonal menus.

The restaurant is pleasant and very friendly. Our problem was trying to get in as the outside lights were not on and we went past it twice as it is located up a small dark alley with a real Penzance wind blowing on the night of our visit. Staff were very warm and welcoming. Service was good and the food was good for tapas. Both our deserts, which are common on many menus, were sadly average; hence the "very good" revue.

We called ahead to book a table to guarantee seating, since it was a Sunday night and many places were closed. But there did not seem to be an issue seating people without bookings. This restaurant has a "tapas" menu, or small plate menu. It was suggested that we order two or three items per meal. I have an allergy to plant peppers & paprika, and I had difficulty finding two items that I thought I would enjoy. I chose the tomato/olive salad, but I had to specify NO green olives that are pimento stuffed, and the Blue Cheese Soufflé. Both were quite tasty. My husband ordered some type of seafood with capers. We both enjoyed our meals. He had a Spanish beer, which he said was terrific. I'm not a beer drinker, so I cannot offer an opinion on that. There were three young men running the restaurant, and they were all rather entertaining. I felt that I had to work extra hard to convince the young man of my allergy, and he even asked "how bad is it?" It was when I mentioned that I have an epipen that he seemed to finally grasp the situation. Most restaurants manage to take my allergy seriously without asking the severity. We were seated near the bar, which resulted in a cold draft every time someone came in and out of the door. Something worth considering if you are sensitive to temperatures. There was a large party coming in, so we chose to leave quickly as there really wasn't anything else tempting on the menu, and between the drafts and the noise, we felt it best to just get on our way. There was another room, a few steps up, near the front of the building, where many walk-ins were directed, but I have no idea what the ambiance was like since I never went to look.

We had booked a table and were seated near the door, by the bar, which ended up being quite drafty as people came and went. This is a "tapas" restaurant, where it was suggested that we order two or three plates to share. I had difficulty choosing something that would not affect a capsicum allergy although I felt I was clear what that involved when ordering. The waiter asked me "how bad is it?" (my allergy) That worried me a bit, so I was certain to stay clear of anything that might be an issue. I ordered the tomato/olive salad, insisting that it could only be black olives and not green with pimiento, and the blue cheese soufflé. My husband ordered fish with capers. The food was presented fairly quickly. And we both did enjoy our meals He also enjoyed a Spanish beer. Not being a beer drinker, I cannot add any advice to that. I did not give a higher star rating because I thought that the meals were a bit over priced for the quantity in comparison to other places where we had dined in Penzance. And, although they were good, there was nothing that would have called me back to eat there a second time. But if it is Sunday night, and you need a place to eat, this restaurant is certainly a great choice. FYI: There is no view from the front room, and there is one heck of a step to get into the door in the back.

I was looking forward to this as my partner had an amazing time there around New Year’s, but overall, it was a disappointing experience. I’m giving this review because my feedback is constructive rather than negative. We arrived midweek, for an evening meal for two, and were brought to the rear dining area and given stool seating over a small high table, the kind you would have a drink at, and maybe an aperitif snack, but then move onto an actual dining table to dine at. Instead, the (five) dishes unexpectedly arrived together and there wasn’t enough room. Maybe we could have been served our starters first and then once they were cleared the mains could have been brought out? No matter, we said if a dining table was available we wouldn’t mind moving and luckily one did. Unluckily, in the main room the ceiling lights were on full power giving it a canteen vibe - not the soft lighting and cosy atmosphere we expected. So the plates arrived without any introduction, which isn’t unacceptable but it is handy and a nice thing for waiters to do. Later, a bill was brought to us for another table; dessert was brought out and the waiter wondered aloud if we should have smaller spoons; innocuous incidents on their own but along with the previous events was indicative of a Front of House team who lacked experience. Lemon sole and squid dishes were fantastic and would recommend them!

Disappointing experience despite good food. I want to be honest, which is why I gave the food 3 stars. However, everything else was the worst I've ever experienced. We had a reservation, but when we arrived, our table had been given to someone else. After waiting 10 minutes, we were finally seated. We ordered food and a bottle of wine, but they brought us whiskey glasses, explaining that they had run out of wine glasses and would clean some and bring them over. If that was the case, why bring the whiskey glasses at all? I’m not an alcoholic, and I can wait a bit longer for proper glasses. This felt incredibly rude. When we ordered mussels, they didn’t provide a separate plate for the shells, even though other tables received them. We asked the waitress for a separate plate for the shells, but instead, she brought another plate of mussels. The manager checked on the other tables but completely ignored us, asking every table about their food except ours. She smiled at everyone, but smiling doesn't equate to good service. We were always kind and tried to find positive reasons for this treatment, but things only got worse. We finished our food, and nobody collected the empty plates for a while. We’re not overly sensitive people, but this was too much. I’m genuinely curious about the reason behind this treatment.

The waitress didn’t tell us when ordering that the mussels doesn’t come with bread or fries, and that the fish doesn’t either come with any carbs. I wanted to book a table here as I know it specializes in fish dishes (which I was looking for as my family are visiting and wanting some nice fish) and two members of the party are vegan. I enquired what vegan options they have to be told - "we don't currently have any vegan options as this is not our focus, we are primarily a fish restaurant, 45 Queen Street is 2 mins up the road" .... Thanks Jay. We will stick to our usual which is indeed Queen Street. Missed out on quite a bit of money there for simply not offering 1 vegan option on your menu.

I booked here for a special occasion and was shocked to be seated at a sharing table with no mention of this when I booked. It was not very nice being seated two feet away from a complete stranger who kept staring at us and listening to our conversation. The menu was surprisingly uninspiring after all the good reviews I’d read. The quality of the food was mediocre and the drinks very expensive for the quality. The toilet was certainly not up to standard with one damp towel available to dry your hands, which hopefully the staff didn’t use. It was a very disappointing experience.

My friend and I had such high expectations having read the reviews . We were seated at a long table (sharing table ) The staff were very nice. Wine list was very limited and price per glass high for the quality of wine. The food was all served at once so most was cold, chips were tasteless as was the calamari. The puddings at 7.50 each were tiny and definitely overpriced ! I don’t think I’ll ever go anywhere again that serves small plates at big prices.

My wife and I ate dinner here in October. The food was good and I liked the short and interesting menu. The place is a bit basic inside though, and the seating is not very comfortable. My biggest complaint is that they don't have adequate ventilation in the kitchen and so there is a very strong smell of frying in the restaurant. Our clothes smelled of fried food the next day. I also think it is a bit expensive for what you get. We ordered a lemon Sole which was okay but far too small for £16.00. Some of the other dishes we ordered had exactly the same garnishes / components, and so were quite repetitive. In the end our bill was £90.00 (including service and a bottle of Alberino) for two, which was too dear for what was really just tapas and I was still hungry when we left.

The food was pretty good and the service was very friendly. Sadly the evening faltered for three reasons. At 9.20pm everyone had left, including the chefs, and it was very clear that we were holding things up when they wanted to close up, the bill was very high for the dining experience and the ventilation was poor quality so our clothes smelled of food when we got home. This is nearly a good restaurant and they will get there I’m sure, but great food isn’t a guarantee of success on its own.

Ci siamo molto divertiti incontrando persone simpatiche. We stumbled across the Bistro as it is on a small lane behind The Dolphin Tavern. We stopped for lunch and were very glad we did. Padron Peppers, fresh Sardines and great wine in the October sunshine was fabulous. I would highly recommend a visit here and would definitely come back.

Great menu and fabulous food. Loved the sharing plates, only difficulty is choosing which ones to have as we could have eaten everything on the whole menu. Monk fish was amazing and a great choice !! Will definitely be back and Penzance is lucky to have this amazing restaurant.

Excellent tapas. Very refined and unexpected. A good discovery. The entrance to the restaurant is a little hidden in an alley, but you have to go inside! To recommend.

Really nice food, good selection and well prepared. Personally, I'd have liked a sharp/spicy option on the menu to complement the selection which was mostly rich/buttery (but very good!) Also, maybe I missed it on the web site, but I'd have appreciated knowing that the seating arrangements were sharing tables as well as sharing plates. (No romantic dinner with the wife!)

The Barbican Bistro was recommended to us so we popped along to see if they had availability. Luckily they squeezed us in, and we are so glad they did. The menu items are recommended to be used as sharing plates, so we ordered Lemon Sole, scallops with chorizo, garlic bread, regular fries and crab loaded fries with chilli and spring onion. Service was quick and the food was out of this world. Highly recommend, and can’t wait to come back

These were the best mussels we've ever had! Very delicious... we had two helpings. With the good bread for dipping, the mussel broth was wonderfully tasty. Very friendly, helpful wait staff. Charming ambience. Small, quaint place down a cobblestone alleyway. Decent wine list. Reasonably priced.

This is such a cosy, rustic, spot nestled in Newlyn. The food was absolutely outstanding, with seafood dishes reimagined! I loved the crab nachos, crab sandwich, scallops and sundried tomatoes and the weever fillets in a tomato and caper sauce. The service was warm and welcoming too. You could tell many customers were regulars and it was a lovely local spot which I will definitely be returning to if I’m in the area. (Ps it gets busy so I would arrive around 12pm)

We were very excited to go to this place considering multitude of positive reviews found on Google. Food served there is nowhere near authentic and does not taste of anything. We ordered number of tapas and chef who prepared out food most likely forgot that there is an ingredient called “salt” as majority of the dishes taste of nothing. We ordered a bottle of wine so received a complimentary olives -when we tried them we understood why they are complimentary.. (very washed out and lack any flavour, probably from the tin). Restaurant claims that they serve good seafood and tapas - majority of the options and deep fried and effectively dried out and killed by the time they arrive to your table. Pill Pill prawns - only smoked powdered paprika added does not automatically transform any dish into Spanish cuisine - it was bland and once again - no flavours at all (quite bitter due to excessive amounts of smoked powdered paprika). Overall very bad experience when it comes to food quality and authenticity. We ate at seafood Michelin star restaurant night before and were blown away by the quality and execution of all dishes there - and funny enough, only paid 20 quid more than in Fish Bar. Terrible experience overall and felt like I was cheated from start to finish. Cannot fault the waiters - poor girls trying their best but whole thing is overshadowed by the incompetence of the chefs.

We have come to Cornwall for a seafood eating weekend, and this was our first restaurant, then Argue, Newlyn and hook on the rocks, Falmouth. We were not disappointed. Delicious food. Lovely evening.

We returned after eating there last new year when visiting Cornwall, and were blown away. The food, service and value for money is outstanding.
