Drinks good - service friendly - atmosphere lovely but food really let them down. 5/6 dishes we ordered were lukewarm / cold in the centre. Upsetting as really wanted to love it here but sadly wouldn’t recommend or return

Absolutely fantastic tapas! We had the early bird deal £22 for 3 tapas and a drink, which is a bargain. Service was great, the food was sublime. I'd definitely go again as would like to try the main dishes.

I've lived in Clifton for five years and have been putting off a visit to Bar 44 as I'm not normally a fan of small plate dining. However I now am a zealous convert. Each dish was exquisitely flavoured and perfectly presented. Go for the artichoke, octopus and ox cheek. Robin looked after our small birthday party very well. Thank you Bar 44 - five stars - I'll be back

At best average. If you are used to true Spanish tapas please stay away from this place.

The food was delicious, but the portions were quite small. While the side vegetables were suitable for sharing during our Sunday dinner, the meat portions were definitely insufficient.

We had a meal to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The service was dreadful and we were treated like an inconvenience by the waiting staff. The food was nice but the poor service took away from the experience. A disappointing and expensive meal, I would not recommend.

Absolutely delicious! Good range of options for carnivores and vegetarians alike. There are so many dishes to recommend but the best were the anchovies, the king prawns, the cider chorizo.

We booked a private room for a girls' get-together in December, and it was perfect! The space allowed us to have our own party while enjoying the amazing, authentic, Spanish food. The selection of drinks was spot on—we especially loved the jugs of pornstar sangria! The staff were fantastic, really attentive, and made the experience even better (thank you Danny!). They accommodated meat, vegetarian, and vegan eaters effortlessly, ensuring everyone was catered for. Communication leading up to the event was clear and helpful, making the whole process smooth. It was a 10/10 night for all 10 girls! We will return. Also considering how much food and drink we ordered, price was very reasonable.

Easily the greatest Spanish restaurant in Bristol, the venue, the service and the food are all exceptional! The Sunday roasts are sublime too! Perfect for a casual fun dinner with friends& family or a special occasion.

Wanted to come to this place since I got the cookbook the year before. I brought the book and got it signed (thank you very much). Had a few plates and the large sherry tasting flight. This took a while to pour and came out about 20 minutes after the food had arrived. I’d recommend it because the flavours really pop - May be worth asking for it all to come out at the same time (sherry and food). I would come again. I will come again.

Menu is limited and the food was mediocre, however the service is decent. The potato’s tortilla were very undercooked and it came out when we were done eating?!

Had Tapas here last night (21/11/24) amd was delicious. Had a good selection of dishes and all were delicious. I even enjoyed the olives and I've Never have enjoyed an Olive 🫒

Nice Tapas bar located in the middle of Clifton village. The menu offers a wide range of options to fit all diets and preferences. The prices were very fair as well. We went with a group of four for lunch and ordered a bottle of wine, a few other drinks and 8-10 dishes for a total bill of £170. This is definitely a great stop for Spanish-inspired small plates and is especially well suited for group meals.

Nice restaurant on paper. Drinks good. In terms of food quality it is good enough just insanely overpriced for what it is. Jamón definitely did not taste like bellota and was so expensive for the quantity - £18 for about 7 pieces. Had a greater quantity in London (which would surprise you). Will never understand why tapas in the U.K. has to be so overpriced and fobbed off as fancy (los españoles me entendéis).

Lovely food & great service but the iberico ham was a rip off, literally given 8 small pieces for £18 but everything else was really nice

The thing we often forget, and I’m as guilty of this as anyone, is that going out for food isn't about 'the food.' I mean, we all need to eat, but we can do that anywhere. The real joy lies in the 'going out.' It's the atmosphere, the ambiance, the sense of occasion, and—yes—the service. Take Bar 44 in Clifton, for example. Now, if I were to say the service was slow, I wouldn’t be wrong. It was slow. But here’s the rub: it didn’t matter. We were told right from the start that they had new staff on board, and that they were finding their feet. And do you know what? That honesty was refreshing. The people who served us cared—actually cared—about what they were doing. It was service with a smile, even if that smile took a bit longer to reach our table. But let’s not pretend the food is irrelevant. When it arrived (in its own time, mind you), the tapas was excellent. The Manchego plate was a lesson in simplicity and style—just the right amount of bite and tang. The overnight sherry-braised ox cheek? Meltingly soft and utterly moreish. The whipped cod roe was everything you want from whipped cod roe: light, airy, and full of punch. In fact, everything that passed our lips was, if not perfect, damn close to it. Yet, here's the twist—almost more importantly than the food, we had a lovely evening. The kind where the minutes stretch into hours and you find yourself leaning back in your chair, completely content. It felt special, as if the world outside had paused just for us to enjoy this moment. So, bravo, Bar 44. You’ve reminded me that a meal out isn’t just about feeding the stomach. It’s about feeding the soul.

Loved their cookbook... the restaurant feels like a chain. Little passion in the kitchen...felt like a paint by numbers crew... cooking to a set recipe with a photo... ie: my fried cheese came out as a hollow shell...all the cheese had oozed out in the fryer...if you're on your game, and food is your passion, you'd catch this before serving it to the customer. Other items like the bravas felt a bit clunky. The artichoke was very tasty, yet felt like it was lacking a bit of acid somehow/some way/some how... no real effort on the presentation. To be honest, it wasn't bad, but it lacked that special something that the cookbook would lead you to believe is on offer. It feels like a chain outlet, with all the expected middle of the road enthusiasm you expect from Ask or Wagamamas... I wouldn't bother going back, and I guess that's the part that makes me a bit sad... I really wanted to love this place.

We asked for water like 3-4 times throughout the night and we finally got it the 5th time. We booked here through first table and when we got the bill, the waiter didn’t even put the 50% discount and when we told him, he had to do something with the receipt and disappeared again for like 10 minutes. The service could do a lot better but the food is incredible. The ingredients and cooking are high quality and it’s so good I would come back again anyway (only through first table because I do think it’s a bit overpriced as some dishes are quite small and the service is not great)

Really great food and delicious cocktails, but sadly the experience was let down by inattentive staff. Drinks were often forgotten and then incorrect when they arrived.

Great Sunday lunch sharing plater

Slight mistake with my booking but the brilliant guys sorted us a fantastic table and then the food and service was 100 percent. And I got extra padron peppers foc...mmmm

Fabulous sunday lunch, great service, good atmosphere and awesome food. Three of us shared the split hogs head, and trimmings, and it was unbelievable! This is the third, or fourth time I have been each time it is the same. Great work.

We had a wonderful Sunday lunch here. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The place itself was spacious and had a nice atmosphere. The food was incredibly tasty along with the drinks selection. We really enjoyed our visit and plan to return. Thank you.

We had a perfect evening at Bar44. Food was excellent - upmarket but still authentic, lots of nice vegetarian choices(try beetroot ensalada, it's fantastic!), but we also tried some from fish and meat section - and really, every dish was a delight to share. All staff were friendly and efficient during the dinner and also when booking the table. The charming hostess from Gran Canaria made us feel very welcome.

Delicious food. Sadly let down by front of house staff. Inattentive bar one warm and engaging lady who served our wine. Everyone else were lack lustre and interaction was abrupt. Oh and they missed a few things from our order. Fixed when we followed up. And of course spot on when arrived.

Great Sunday lunch! Lovely service and staff, really nice atmosphere, went on a Sunday about 3pm, nice buzz about the restaurant. Had the roast beef platter, was yummy!

Food was really tasty, the pork belly and the manchego cauliflower cheese were the highlights, the roast potatoes let the rest down a bit. Croquettas and sobrassado for starters were both delicious! Bloody Mary was soo good, one of the best I’ve had in Bristol, and I’ve had a lot ahah! Service was lovely, apart from plates being cleared while some were still eating, including one with food on that was still being eaten. Overall really good, would come back

Wow, we had the lunch tapas deal - it was amazing. The food was delicious, with really generous portions. The sangria was delicious and service and atmosphere were ace. I can't wait to go back!

I am giving this restaurant one star. Most of the food was nice... But I was served a mushroom dish that was tough as a boot. I couldn't even get a knife through it. I complained and it was taken away and nothing more was said. No replacement, no apology, no adjustment to the bill. I was in a group and didn't want to spoil the occasion by escalating the complaint at the time. To add insult to injury the restaurant automatically added 10% service charge to the bill. So paid extra for poor service. Nice restaurant but poor show on this occasion

Straight forward tapas options at lunchtime, freshly made, good flavour, love the Andalusian vibe of the decor and tiles.

Absolutely amazing! Everything we ate was delicious, everyone there was lovely and I cannot recomend the berry sangria enough.

They are sold as a tapas bar with Spanish cuisine, and well, how can I put it...the typical croquettes with excess bechamel but edible, the tiny potato omelette, a portion of cheese for 14 pounds with two wedges of cheese and a little bit of Spreading a casar cake type adding quince seems like an abuse to me and in general you deceive the eye but not the palate; I don't even talk about prices because it is very expensive.

Having eaten at Bar44 about 4 years ago, I was very disappointed by the decline in, what was, a previously excellent experience. We sampled 9 or 10 dishes, mostly vegetable and fish-based, and about half of them of passable, the rest bland. The overall feel of the premises has become somewhat 'tired' - perhaps the same could be said for the food. We were in northern Spain earlier in the year and it could pay dividends if the owners returned to what they claim to be the source of their original inspiration and reassess their menu. I cannot imagine that any Galician sampling this food would make any claim that it was representative of their cuisine.

The food and cocktails were all delicious. My main criticism is that the food really came out slowly. I understand with tapas it comes as it’s ready rather than altogether, but we never had more than one dish at a time. We would finish one dish, and then wait and wait for the next one.

Terrible Sunday roast,by far the worst I have ever experienced. Meat very fatty, potatoes not crisp, vegetables boiled to death, cauliflower cheese, not a lot of cheese sauce, the Yorkshire pudding was brittle. I don't know how anybody could get it so wrong? Not cheap either. Please don't waste your money here!!!!

Having lived in Spain, this is one of the places I like to come to to get the feel and food of Spain. Good selection of wines, the dishes are all very tasty. It is a bit pricier than Spain! 😉 On occasions there has been live Flamenco, which is always an experience. I really like this place!

We booked a table downstairs in the vault and it was an all round exquisite experience. The server was perfect, so attentive, but not overly, very fun and so helpful. The ambience was perfect and the food was knock-out. I'm definitely going to book this again for a lunchtime party. Best day out for a long time. Thank you Bar 44!

Cocktail was amazing but the Sunday roast is one of the worst I ever have. The roast beef is so tough and tasteless, every side dish is cold and tasteless, gravy taste burn. The guy manager is cold towards foreign manager, however other staff are very helpful and friendly.

Loved it. What makes a restaurant special? Imaginative decor, food and (house) wine excellent, staff super super friendly, sure. But there's always an indefinable extra which makes you certain you'll return. This place has it.

Nice tapas bar with a good selection of wines. The staff are friendly, attentive and welcoming. I came here for a roast with my friends, it was a different experience to what I'm normally used to. The Yorkshire pudding was the best I've ever had. Carrots, cabbage , cauliflower cheese and gravy was really tasty. Only criticism was the roast potatoes, I thought they were over crunchy and a bit tough. You pay a bit more but it's worth it.

Could not recommend Bar 44 enough. We had the private room yesterday for a 40th birthday celebration and it was fantastic from start to finish! Food & cocktails were amazing, staff were so lovely! Felt really exclusive downstairs and even had full reign of the music downstairs. Absolutely 5* and would recommend if you want to book a private event!

Great Sunday roast for 2. The only disappointing thing is that there was a very small selection of tapas available

I was so looking forward to the roast here as I'd heard such good things. However I was so disappointed - everything that came was luke warm, and the meat and potatoes were really dry. It was as if it had been sitting under a warming lamp for hours. I couldnt reqlly taste as miso in the cabbage either.. Maybe we just got unlucky...

Went for a beer tasting class, we were very well looked after, had an insight of the passion that the owner has for Spain, the decor is beautiful, and the place is spotless clean. Everything was carefully catered for and selected to balance out flavours. I went with a friend from Galicia, we both loved the wine, beers and service. I definitely will be back.

A great experience at Bar44! We tried many tapas to share as a group, wines and desserts and loved all of them! Really delicious food and attentive staff. Recommended!

We had an enjoyable evening and particularly liked the Sobrasada Iberica and Ox cheek out of the 6 dishes we chose. Service was very mixed, we had a fabulously attentive and friendly member of staff and another that simply plonked our dishes at the end of the table as she walked past.. it would have taken another 10 seconds to put the dishes in front of us. We've eaten in many tapas bars/restaurants and fully expect dishes to come out at different tines and as they're cooked but never have we only had one dish at a time, 10 mins wait then one more dish & so on and sadly no complementary bread . Overall the food was all very good and well priced but the whole experience was just a bit dissapointing.

I went here this evening for my birthday with my family. We were greeted by the lovely Anna who was serving us all evening. We ordered many tapas dishes all of which were incredible. The service was also 10/10 and we will definitely be returning. Thank you Anna!!! :)

Sadly the service was really poor!

There were two standout dishes at Bar 44. The Sobrasada Ibérica with rosemary honey. Salty, sweet and smokey and the Olavidia cheese with flatbread and chutney. These were a delightful way to start the meal. The remaining dishes all had something I would add or change. The padrón peppers needed some flaky salt, a higher ratio of jamon in the croquetas, finer crumb on the scallops and a chunkier salad to balance out the smokiness of the duck patty. The pork belly was extremely dry and the fat chewy. Overall, we enjoyed our meal but think some minor adjustments could make the food great. The range of drinks on offer is fantastic, as a vermouth lover I was pleased to see such a range on offer - especially the rojo on tap. Service is fabulous, inviting and makes the whole experience enjoyable.

As a Spanish woman lover of the Spanish gastronomy I am not a fan of visiting tapas restaurants outside the country as the food is usually adapt to the country's ways of cooking. But I have to say that here I was impressed. The jamón wasn't only delicious, but very well cut; the croquettes were fully charged of Iberian flavour and the tortilla with sobrasada was simply delicious and onion free (as it should be 😉). The only thing we order out of the traditional tapa's scheme was the duck burger and it was lush. Great drinks menu, staff friendly, helpful and patient (believe, they are great). A place to go is you want to try a bit of Spain (although the prices are not so Spanish). I'll be back!

it's the second time there I didn't like the first one very much Gave a second chance for some quick tapas. The rice was very salty and overcooked. The pork belly a bit cold and the duck burger dry The thing is, no one checks how the food was until we pay. The reviews are very nice and have many stars. Too bad I can't say the same

Great selection of tapas prepared with quality products - each mouthpiece was an explosion of flavour. Best enjoyed in small groups (2-4 people), so you can try as many dishes as possible. I highly recommend their patatas bravas, orange and almond cake, and of course, sangria. Do keep in mind that this is one of the higher-end cocktail bars in Bristol though, and that is reflected in the prices.

Went for Sunday lunch. The food tasted lovely. The gravy was excellent. However 2 key items have resulted in a very poor review. We order the pork Sunday lunch. The amount of meat was enough for one person not two. Instead they tried to hide this by providing lots of accompaniments. As meat lovers this left us hungry. If you are happy to pad your hunger out with potatoes and veg then you will be OK. But the biggest killer was the wine. We asked for 2 bottles of house red. They charged us £36 a bottle! It made for an extremely expensive Sunday lunch
