Bannockburn Inn in Highland

Lovely meal tonight. Had NC500 burger - fantastic. Starters were delicious. Partner had Steak Pie which was beautiful. Owner and staff were lovely especially the charming Zoe. Great wee lass. Highly recommend for food, drink and banter! We will definitely be back when in Helmsdale.

Oh my goodness, the food here is AMAZING!! The owners are super friendly and make us very welcome unlike other places very nearby!! We live in this area now, and this will definitely be our go to place, what else could you want, with great food and lovely staff xx 😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

One night stay in the Inn's self catering accomodation. Welcomed by our host and shown to our room and around the facilities. We had use of secure storage for our bicycles. Accomodation was clean and comfortable. As we were the only guests we had the shared bathroom and kitchen to ourselves. Table and chairs in bedroom were handy too. Good value for money and on our route.

The food is proper home cooked food and the pizzas are amazing, plentiful toppings. It has a lovely atmosphere and is very laid back. But the biggest shout out is to the young boy and girl that works there. The service from them are better than I have had from older servers and their friendliness was so nice to see. They had us in stitches too. We enjoyed it so much we are going back tomorrow.

We popped in on the off chance they would be dog friendly while touring the NC500 with family. We were kindly shown to a table in the restaurant by a young waiter. The service was excellent, our waiter was only 14yrs Old (Andrew), so polite, kind and friendly, amazing conversation from all staff and very welcoming. Ended up running very late (owner) stayed up till midnight to let us in. And also let us stay a lot later than check out because I was waiting for a mechanic. Couldn't have been nicer the young woman who was waiting to clean the room made sure we had everything we needed as we waited. Couldn't have been nicer. Thank you so much Bannockburn inn.

Initially received negative vibes from barman but after getting drinks went into the restaurant. We were served by a very pleasant young lady who served us as you would expect. The menu wasn't the most extensive I have seen. I eventually chose chicken strips which had a variety of coatings and they were delicious. Sorry I can't remember what I had a s a starter but overall the food was good. We also spoke to another lady who I assume was the chef. She was also friendly and talkative

Dreadful food and terrible service. We both had "home made soup" which was the worst soup we have ever tasted. It had been watered down and was completely tasteless. The main courses arrived eventually after a long wait. My wife had chicken burger which she ate very little of as she said it was awful. I had the steak pie. The chips that accompanied both meals were the dregs from a bag of frozen chips.The service was very slow and unfriendly. We had to go to the bar to ask for our bill as the so called waiter disappeared into the kitchen and we waited and waited for him to return. An English man who we presumed to be the owner ignored us as we stood at the bar waiting to pay.All he was interested in was talking to one of the locals about football. Eventually the bill arrived. We payed and voiced our opinion of the meal.No apologies were offered. Never again will we set foot in this badly managed establishment.

The worst place we have ever had , it was an absolute disgrace served by staff with no pride in themselves . It was dirty and a waste of money

Restaurant wasn't open at opening time. The rather unfriendly guy behind the bar, not a local incidentally, said the cook couldn't come in because she had a sore leg today.. Is this place really operated by one person. Very disappointed. Great reception for NC500 tourists.

The bar staff are friendly, outside seating area is good. My wife and I enjoyed a few drinks here on our arrival at Helmsdale, seemed like a nice place. On the Saturday I phoned to book a table for the restaurant, the booking was accepted even though I made it quite late in the day. On arrival we were shown to our table by a young person, all good so far. He brought us the menu which sadly bore little resemblance to the online menu which we had down loaded. We decided not to stay as the meals we would have ordered as seen on the on line menu weren't on the laminated version provided. I advised the young waiter that we were leaving and gave the reason. He shrugged his shoulders and walked off!

Didn't stay here but visited for a meal. Barman wasn't outright impolite but just seemed more interested in chatting to his mates than actually serving us. Having told us there was a free table for two in the restaurant he kinda wandered off expecting us to know where it was. Having said all that, my steak was very good, as was my wife's steak and ale pie, which had a good quantity of quality meat in it. I'd probably eat there again.

Absolut liebenswerte Bewirtung. Sowohl bei der Übernachtung als auch im Restaurant. Besonders herzlich und erinnerungswert waren unsere Abende im Pub, die Gespräche mit dem Barkeeper und den andern Gästen und Einheimischen.

Freshly cooked food to order and what a delight! I had FOMO with my sons chicken strips; although my NC500 burger was great! We also had fish and chips and the batter was light and on point. Was tempted to give a 4 star purely based on the ketchup: it wasn’t the best. But everything was fantastic and we also managed to park our motorhome in the car park for free - win, win!

I did not have food but just went in the bar for a drink. Got my drink served and then was totally ignored by the barman and not a chance of talking with the locals. Once the barman got my money he turned away and ignored whilst I was talking to him! Needless to say I did not order another drink!

Stayed just the 1 night during a road trip. The family room was large enough as there was only 2 of us but was basic and dated, very noisy next to the road with lorrys coming past all through the night, but that can't be helped. Food in the restaurant was very good and reasonably priced. For £120 a night I would expected breakfast but got laughed at when we asked. Overall it served a purpose but overpriced in comparison to others we have stayed in along the way.

Staying in Helmsdale for few nights we decided to eat here. It was so good we went back the 2nd night. Great choice on menu. Food was amazing & great value. All the staff were very friendly & helpful. Would highly recommend.

A beautiful pub very homely and welcoming staff, it is also dog friendly so we could take junior our labradoodle with us. Three of us had diner here on our last night in helmsdale and the food was to die for

Family of 4 with 2 young children. I couldn't recommend this pub enough. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Alison (not sure if owner or manager) is a very friendly lady and always at the end of the phone with any queries I had. We stayed overnight in the harbour car park in our motor home. Parking is free, however, a donation must be made to the RLNI along the harbour. The pub is a short walk from the harbour, up hill, but there are steps on the other side of the bridge. All food is prepared fresh on the day. My daughters had freshly battered chicken bites, with chips and peas, not greasy at all. My wife had the Texan burger (very filling), I had the meat lovers pizza (Very big and well worth the price). Opening hours 1800-2100, this suited our driving schedule perfectly as we didn't leave Beauly Holiday Park till 1730. Overall very satisfied and full tummies all round. Can pay cash and card. The waiter deserves all the tips he gets, polite, professional & friendly. Thank you for you hospitality.

A stopover at the NC500, with parking for our motorhome. Homely, friendly, small restaurant with adjacent pub. I ate the lamb, very nice, with mint sauce and potatoes. Good menu with wide choice.

The Bannockburn is an Inn of two parts; an excellent restaurant with very very good food and good service, and a traditional Scottish pub with a good drinks selection and an equally good selection of local characters. Brilliant and always our first choice when down here. We are vegan and they are quite happy to sort us out some wonderful food. Excellent hosts who will make sure you feel welcome.

Having phoned the previous day checking times for food (15:00-21:30) and that our little dog was welcome,, and he was, in the Bar we were told.we arrived at 17:00 ish and were greated by what I assume were locals enjoying an end of the week drink, they were very friendly and pointed out the owner for us.we were sat in the restaurant bar area and not the "public bar" as this was quite busy.the owner was very friendly and took our order of Prawn cocktail and whitebait for starters and the Bannockburn sharing platter, along with 1pt, and 2 large glasses of wine.the bill came to £40.00 all in.the food was great ,, the platter was huge for 2 people and in hindsight we should have shared the platter for one.Our only concern is for the owner, she was so busy and desperately requires staff.we would return here in a heartbeat if every the area again. many thanks

Great food eaten here a few times when in the area pizzas are excellent. They also do a takeaway menu which is good as the only other takeaway in Helmsdale is the chippy.

This was our second trip to this restaurant. We visited in Feb 2018 when staying in Helmsdale and again tonight on our return holiday to Lobster Ponds in Helmsdale. The food and the service on both occasions was fantastic, the owners are such lovely people and can’t do enough to make you feel welcome. We can recommend the Turf and Surf starter and the Shoulder of Lamb and also the Fajitas for main course. My dad loved the sticky toffee pudding.

We went here after travelling from Wick to try the Mirage fish n chip shop, unfortunately it closed 2hours before its stated closing time.The Bannockburn was excellent, very welcoming and the food and drinks came very quick. Met a lovely couple who had the steak and said it was great and they were local and often ate there. Would definitely go back to try some of the other classics on the menu.

For a country pub it was extremely disappointing that the opening hours were so sporadic and the wait staff inattentive and indifferent to the customers.

During our tour of the East Coast of Scotland we were advised to have a meal at the Bannockburn Inn.

We have had drinks here often enough over the years but 4 of us had a meal here last week, something we should have done before now. Great choice of food. 2 of us had steaks and both agreed very, very good. We visit Helmsdale once or twice every year, lots of family connections, will now be eating in the Bannock every visit.

I recently visited on the 26th July 2018. My family is originally from Helmsdale, so I have always went up for wee holidays from the age of 2weeks old. I have always been familiar with the Bannockburn Inn, but I love what Alison has done with the place.

Stopped over in carpark with campervans, as they are in Britstops. We received a warm welcome from Alison.We had our dinner. The food was all fine, we booked breakfast for next morning which we all enjoyed.

We stayed here for one night last week during our cycle tour of the nc500 as Storm Hector made an appearance! This friendly family run inn was just what we needed. A great room with comfortable beds, coffee, tea, kitkats. Our full english breakfasts were delicious and fuelled our minds and legs for the last day of our trip! Thanks Alison for being a great host! :-)

nice People but the big Problem: we got a "quite" room, we were in a room over the Restaurant and not over the Bar but you could almost understand every word spoken downstairs

Great food, great service, but could maybe cater a little more for disabled people. The only access to the rooms is an outside metal staircase, which is not great if you have a mobility issue.

Called in at about 6.30pm on a Thursday evening with my wife and also our dog in order to have a meal.....at first we couldn’t gain access via the bar/restaurant door which was still locked so went in via the bar itself. As soon as we entered the conversation stopped and the few men in the bar looked at us .. it was like a throwback day when everyone looked at the stranger and also wondered why a female had entered the bar area..

Both the food and hospitality were excellent. My husband and father said the beef and veg soup was the best soup they have ever had. We would all definitely recommend and will definitely be back.

Small hotel in Helmsdale with excellent food and service. We ordered steak that comes form the local butcher and it was cooked to perfection and tasted as good as any stake I have had. This is a family run hotel and they are all really helpful and just good folk. The rooms were good and clean and tidy.

After long day in the burn panning out a little of the yellow stuff we sauntered into the bar of what must be said as not the best looking pub in Scotland! There we struck up an easy conversation with the bar tender, ordered a 2 pints and enquired if they did bar food to which he replied yes but the kitchen is closed. I think he could see the disappointment on our fatigued little faces and took pity and would rustle us up a couple of steaks mmmmm ok..

Food was deep fried and icky. Burger was super-processed. Didn't finish our meal. Beer recommendation was good, and staff was very nice and accommodating. Easy to access from road, easy parking. Cheap. Lots of interesting historic books on the shelves. Other patrons were very nice....

Visitamos varias veces durante nuestra estancia de una semana en Helmsdale. Bar muy amable y habitantes. Propietario Gerry nos hicieron sentir muy bienvenidos. Las carnes cocinadas Alison encargada a la perfección y era muy amable y servicial. Recomiendo el bar y el restaurante.

Upon entry to the B&B it seems awkward, but once inside all is good. Rooms are upstairs, and the pub and restaurant are on the street level. My room as a solo traveler was large and comfortable. Shared the bath with another room. Reasonably priced. Breakfast was not included, but there was a kitchenette at the end of the hall. Even though the Inn is on the main road, at night it was very quiet. Alison is an incredible lady, very welcoming and friendly. She not only runs the Inn but does the cooking for dinner. She has won an award for her beef. I had the salmon dinner, which was excellent. And her Sticky Toffee Cake is a must have. The staff in the restaurant is very friendly and service is great. I would recommend both staying and dining at the Bannockburn Inn.

Very nice stay and very comfortable. Room was large with shared bath with one other room. No breakfast but kitchenette at end of hall. Alison is wonderful. She not only runs the Inn but does the cooking for dinner. Dinner was excellent, and she has won an award for her beef. Would definitely stay again.

A welcoming pub with a very nice separately roomed informal restaurant. A small but good choice of meals with very friendly staff. The steaks we had were extremely good and perfectly cooked.

It looks like a rather dodgy Inn from the outside and it's not the cosiest place we've ever been in, but once inside both the friendly service and the excellent food make sure you don't regret that you've entered this place. The steak is one of the very best I've ever eaten, but also the other dishes were highly appreciated by the rest of the family. Worth every penny!

We went here for a steak dinner - which was good. However the plates were cold and as a result the steak was really not warm enough. The service was good and the waitress friendly.

Wir haben uns überlegt, dort rein zu gehen. Es war nicht das schönste Lokal in Schottland. Das Essen und die Chefin (erst Kellnerin und dann selber gekocht) haben und voll und ganz überzeugt. Mein Steak erste Sahne und der Fisch meiner Frau ebenso.Bitte versucht es - sehr zu empfehlen.

A very warm welcome from the lady of the house and she popped us in without any notice. The young lady serving us was polite and also very welcoming.The menu had an excellent range but we both plumbed for the steak due to previous reviews, and we must say that they lived up to expectation. Really tender and tasty so what more could you want?We did not have a sweet as we had no room left inside us, but must say that there was a superb choice of VERY tempting offerings.A great meal with a really warm scottish welcome. This is a hidden gem of a place ate here 4 out of 5 nights on my hols. The steak is the highlight of the menu and the soup is really good too. A good selection of ales including well kept real ale and really friendly staff complement everything

Easy to find on our first night in helmsdale arriving at 8pm. Very friendly as we had three dogs with us but had to eat in the public bar. There was only one table so we were lucky as there was nobody else eating

For a pleasant meal in a warm and friendly atmosphere, this local pub is a good choice. The menu isn't huge but the food was good, and the staff friendly.

Appearing quite late to enquiry about food we were welcomed with open arms. What a great place this turned out to be. Ros (lady serving in the restaurant)was a great bubbling personality person and she made our evening even more enjoyable. The food was excellent especially the Lamb shoulder, which my husband had, while our friend and myself had the breaded fish. We also had a great dessert as well. There was a little wait as they were busy but this lead to conversation with Ros and lots of laughter. We loved this place and it's occupants . Agree from outside does not that inviting but looks are def deceiving relating to this Inn. Go on walk in it's great .

Fantastisches familiäres Restaurant mit dem besten Essen der Umgebung (unbedingt den Lachs probieren). Einfach reingehen und schlemmen;) Wenn wir wieder in der Gegend sind kommen wir mit Sicherheit wieder. So lecker und so nett! 100 Punkte!

My wife an I were looking for meal in Helmsdale as we were passing through, we called at the Bannockburn restaurant by chance. We entered the dinning room to see only one family there. I had doubts about our choice. We got served right away and both chose 8oz sirloin steaks. It was the best steak I have had in a long time, cooked as we asked and served in a pleasant manner. They were served on plates as opposed to sizzlers, this means the meat is cooked the way one asks, and not continually cooking as you eat . Also it was reasonably priced ,I can highly recommend their steak and cappuccino cake !!

Doesn't look much from the outside and you have to travel through the bar (all male, bare, sport on tv, dart board, snooker table etc) and the lounge to get to the restaurant - a brief sociology of Scottish pubs! The restaurant is old-fashioned in decor but spotless and very comfortable. Great display of photos of local landmarks on one wall, Try to get the corner table beneath a display of items relating to the local gold rush of 1869. Great while you wait for the food. it's worth waiting for too. The home-made soups are delicious. The two main veggie options are very good. Great value and the service is quick and friendly.

Hubby and I shared one of their steak dinners since we'd eaten lunch late that day. The steak was excellent! Grass-fed beef that was tender and perfectly cooked. They need to update the way they put a salad together though...theirs is very outdated and tasteless. And I'm sick to death of chips and green peas served with most dinners. I really want fresh vegetable!!

I stopped here during a hiking holiday. I was served in the restaurant by a well mannered and helpful young man, presumably the owner's son. I had chilli, which was nicely done and it was a generous portion. The cheesecake dessert was a little ordinary, but ok. It was a quiet evening, so not much atmosphere. I would happily return.

Staff were excellent, very friendly and accommodating. The burger I had was awesome, generous portions and prices are reasonable.

Never had a a better steak yet! Warm, friendly service and gorgeous food. Travelled 6 hours for this steak and worth every bite.

We ate three times here during a stay in Helmsdale. We are vegetarian and getting good food is sometimes difficult when eating out. However the Bannockburn had two main course options, both of which were superb. The price was also really low. Please try a meal in this pub if staying nearby or just passing through. In addition the pub itself serves real ale, a range of whiskies and other beverages and the hosts are very friendly and chatty and will make you feel welcome. It is the place to meet the locals and have a good evening in good company. It was quite a find for us. We will be going back.

Had evening meal here while on holiday in the area. Food was very good and was served in comfortable surroundings by pleasant and friendly staff.Enjoyed enough to call back the next night for another meal.

We only wanted something light to eat and they were happy to serve us just soup and a sandwich. The prices were extrememly reasonable and the portions were pretty large. The owner is extrememly affable and happy to chat. All in all, a very pleasant evening.

Ordered the pint and burger deal. Had a choice of beers to pick from. The chips were frozen but quite tasty and a good portion. The burger was a disappointment. It was overcooked and hard. I regret not bringing it to the attention of the staff member at the time.

This is the best place to eat in the village , the steaks are amazing we went in just as food had stopped serving but Alison came down and made us steaks u can't get better than that fantastic service from Alison and jerry I shall be returning very soon.

I've been to the Bannock many times over the years but never had food in there, after reading reviews on here about the steak I knew thats what i would have and i was not disappointed at all, cooked to perfection and we enjoyed the steak so much we had it two nights running. When we were not eating Jerry made us feel very welcome and chatted to us for ages.Can't wait to return :)

We stopped here for an evening meal on our way to Thurso and were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the friendly welcome.The Mey steak was possibly one of the best steaks I have ever had, the portion size perfect. My wife had the seafood platter which included half a medium size lobster a full dressed crab and several langostines beautifully presented and very tasty.Whether like us you are passing through or if you are staying in the area, this has to be one of the best places around - we thoroughly reccommend it.

En este calido pub del pequeño pueblo de Hamsdale, al norte de Inverness y en plenas Highlands, degusté la mejor hamburguesa en mucho tiempo. Acompañada de una pinta de cerveza y a un precio modico. La ensalada de cangrejo (local, como no) también era para chuparse los dedos.

Our B&B recommended this restaurant, she advised us not to be put off by the outside as it does look run down, but the steak was delicious and we had a great night chatting to the locals in the bar before and after dinner.

I recently returned to Helmsdale and made sure I returned to have a steak at the Bannockburn Inn. They are locally sourced from the Castle of Mey and are fantastic! I am always wary of having steaks in restaurants as I am really fussed about how they are cooked. We all asked for them done differently, and all were done to perfection. I chose a pepper sauce and my friends chose the cajun spice, which they tell me was divine.The front of the Bannockburn is a pub with a pool table, but don't be put off. You can either go in through the pub or go round to the restaurant's own entrance at the side. The decor is cosy and traditional, but the steaks are as good as you'll every taste.

The staff are lovely and very friendly. They welcomed any questions, not that I personally asked any. There is a great selection of whiskys displayed very neatly and presentable on the shelves, and also the beer on offer was first class. As for the meal, it was a bargain. £6.50 for beer and a burg, however I was disappointed with the burger, it was on a bit of a naff bun and the burger was very thick and looked to be undercooked (it was red inside). There were no veg or salad although there could have been an added option for this not sure. It was just a burger and chips but the price can't really grumble as the staff made up for it! I had sticky toffee pudding which was fine. If you are passing through it is worth a visit for the atmosphere.

Barman very polite and helpful. Waitress took our food order and brought our food. The food was stunning. I had breaded haddock which was so light and just cooked to perfection. Service was just right. Would definitely eat here again.

After a wander around Helmsdale and a look see of likely eating places, I opened the door of the !annockburn not sure of what I'd get...any concerns went away quickly. Did they have wi-fi and was it working? Yes - great. Gerry/jerry got me an excellent Pint of Trade Winds and Alison sat me down helpfully pointing out a seat by the radiator. Refreshed I ordered an excellent burger and chips followed by sticky toffee pud. The other guests included Swiss and Canadian French plus somme English. All in all flipping great value and no fuss. Alison has an easy manner and lots of stories and great food and Gerry has great well kept beer so if you are in the area it"s a place you have to try you won't be disappointed.

We never eat anywhere else in Helmsdale now. There is a hotel directly opposite but we didn't rate it at all on the single occasion we ate there. Alison and Gerry are two Londoners who took over the Bannockburn a number of years ago. They must have had quite a few wisecracks over the years regarding being English and owning a pub commemorating Scotland's greatest victory.over their ancestors. That speaks volumes about their sense of humour. Although she is always tearing around serving meals,, cooking, pouring drinks etc., Alison always finds time to sit down and have a blether to us. Other customers are treated likewise. Gerry will come through for a chat too between customers. We've eaten here dozens of times over the years. The food is always fantastic. They serve the highest quality steaks money can buy. Alison gets them from Prince Charles's Duchy of Cornwall range. The Prince himself even paid her a visit. Nice one! I frequently opt for the Ham Hock. It is so well cooked that the meat just falls off the bone completely. Absolutely superb. If you like fish you'll not be disappointed either. I sometimes think that business rivals get somebody to write a lousy review in TripAdvisor. That's the only reason I can think of how anyone could be so negative about the Bannockburn.. Bothe the bar and the lounge have been given facelifts over the years. The Tartan Lounge is lovely and if the red tartan carpet ever goes missing we may be responsible. Visit here with confidence. You'll love it. So will your purse.

A nice clean friendly place, you are made to feel very welcome. The steaks are from the castle of mey and melt in your mouth. The banter in the bar with the locals is the best everyone is so friendly and just up for the crack. Overall I would highly recommend you visit this lovely little pub by far the best place in the village.

A big thank you to the staff at the Bannockburn Inn. The atmosphere here is competely fantastic. Friendly, relaxed and great community spirit. I always look forward to coming up to Helmsdale to visit friends and meet some lovely locals. Thank you for all the memories, A Big FAT A+ for this small buisness! :D

stayed at a local B&B and decided to have a late lunch here around 1:30pm, decided on a steak for me and chicken for my friend. My steak was so tough (and I have it medium rare) I had to send it back and the 2nd one wasnt much better. My friend said her chicken was a bit tasteless and when she cut into it she found it was still pink inside so left it. Veg was sogged and cooked to death and the chips cold. we told the waitress we were not happy but nothing happened, so we left still quite hungry and very disappointed. Would give this place a miss.
