Banana Leaf in Glasgow City

I have been a regular banana leaf customer for years, from their old premises in the West end to their new updated St. Vincent street restaurant. The food is second to none, Very flavourful and a great variety on the menu, I have my favourites but also like to try new things occasionally and am never disappointed. The staff are friendly and remember us from previous visits and are always happy to see us return, the decor is nice with a chilled atmosphere, the price is exceptionally cheap particularly for a city centre establishment. The service is typically quick and the food arrives shortly after order on most occasions, there is also the added bonus of bring your own bottle with no corkage. I will continue to visit regularly and support this fine establishment.

Only 5 minutes walk from Buchanan Street this little basement restaurant was a fantastic find. Great South Indian food, great service and great value for money. Enjoyed it so much we ate here twice during our stay in Glasgow.

Popped into this little basement restaurant while wandering past. The greeting was warm and friendly, the curry spicy, tasty and expertly cooked. Incredible value, something that seems rare now - and the team are all welcoming. Recommend highly, I will be back.

We like to call in here whenever we're in Glasgow. It's only a few minutes walk from the Glasgow Central Station, and very handy to visit before a show in the city. Very good variety of food - I have thoroughly enjoyed everything that I have tried. Lots of vegan and veggie options, and prices are very reasonable too.

My mum loves the former Banana Leaf place and it’s always been her favourite place to go for dosa. So she was really excited about this new opening. The decor seemed a little sparse but this was more than compensated by the friendliness of the staff, the speed of the food arriving, but above all the quality of the food. The tastes were fresh and authentic, not far off home cooking. Delicious South Indian food. Liked the touch of having pictures of Ganeshji for kids to colour in too. Thank you to the staff.

The much missed Banana Leaf has returned!!! Many will remember the wonderful south Indian food at their old site in the West End. The same team have just opened up again in the city centre at 192 St Vincent Street. We went there today and we can confirm that they still be serve the best Indian food we have ever tasted. We had their set meals (Thali style selections) which were as outstanding as they have always been. The new restaurant is a bit bigger and trendier than the previous site but the food is still amazing and the prices are still surprisingly low. Their new phone number is 0141 334 4445.

We’ve been ordering from here for years - best curry in town. We recently discovered you get special offers / faster delivery if you order direct from their website. The curries are flavourful & spicy without being too hot.

Went out with my mates because I hadn’t seen them for a while And all the restaurants round my area were all fall for a Friday night so we found the banana leaf Indian I ordered a double mix Donna Indian kebab with mild southern rice we ordered our food at 5:10 but was still waiting at 7:30 so we Started to smell this burning from the kitchen and I walked in there and their were firemen in the kitchen because my Meal had caught fire the whole kitchen was in flames the owner apologised to me and my mates and gave us two vouchers so we still wanted our money back but the owner said they store all money in the kitchen after 15 mins of complaining he kicked us out and when we got home I realised the vouchers he gave us the first was a voucher that expired last year and the second one was for his mates kebab house down the road. Never returning!

Didnt realise this is still open at original location. The one at the south side has closed. Good delicious south Indian food but presentation a bit basic for me.

The minute you walk in, the aromas are so strong that it transports you straight to best local eateries in South India famous for it biryani. you look around and find the locals dipping their fingers in the dosa, poratta and curry with beer stocked on their table. The food is prepared and tastes just like back home and is a must for anyone who wants to eat real south Indian food. One of a kind restaurant.

This is a classic ‘Formica table’ curry house but my goodness the food is so good!! Don’t go expecting a ‘fine dining experience’ - there are no table cloths, no lavish decor nor extensive drinks menu (it’s not licensed) but do expect to find a very reasonably priced and varied menu with a whole host of dishes that you may never have encountered before in a standard Indian restaurant. The food is great- well flavoured with decent portion sizes (they will pack up what you can’t eat for you to take home). We Had a mix of vegetarian and meat dishes and all were excellent. The King Dosa (2 foot circumference) with a potato filling was an entire meal in itself!

Ok I’ll concede that when you walk past and look in, or even when you sit down to eat, you think “wow this place needs a lick of paint and some cleaning up”. But forget that. Forget it entirely. Because they do the fundamental thing that restaurants are meant to do very, very well: make food. South Indian, authentic food. Not chicken tikka masala and such nonsense. Genuine, stunning South Indian food. Dishes to try: Chicken 65, Rasam, chicken pakora, lamb pepper fry, Chicken or Lamb Chettinad (my preference is lamb but whatever you prefer), the biryani dishes, the dosas, South Indian garlic chilli chicken. All outstanding. I’ve tried most of the menu at some point in the last few years and never been let down by it. The food is cheap, service is friendly and if you can look past the surroundings then you’ll enjoy a great meal here. No alcohol but I think there is still a BYOB policy. And on top of that, they donate a portion of he profit to Indian charities, so you’re helping others out as well. A must experience for stunning, authentic Indian food.

One of the best curries I have ever had. I had the patak paneer and my boyfriend had a coconut chicken dish and we were both more than content. Such a vast range of dishes on offer and with both a curry AND a flatbread or rice for only £7/8 it was very affordable and definitely well worth it. Plenty of veggie/vegan options for anyone looking. Great, friendly service and lovely staff too. Will definitely be going back!

Got to be the best curry house around. Huge selection of dishes- many not seen on regular Indian menus. Large helpings,many vegetarian and vegan meals available. Tasty, well cooked, flavoursome food. Excellent value for money. A surefire destination every time we visit Glasgow .

After a visit to kelvingrove, we ordered a carryout for four including starters, rice and breads. What a great meal and the staff so friendly. All for less than £40. Definitely back next time in Glasgow.

The best curry you'll ever have. Unless you've just returned from India you'll not get a better curry than this. The basic surroundings should affect how good the food is, if you're precious about how the walls are painted, don't go. If you want a cracking meal then dive into the menu, don't hold back just pick something you don't recognise, it's the easiest way to get the best!

Didn't enjoy this meal at all. The chef left to buy groceries at Tesco. Found the food to taste very greasy.

Veggie set meal £6.50 absolutely great! Curry, side, rice, chapati, DakoBYOB too - nice beer shop across the road. Took a party of 6-8 people there and bill came to a total of £44! Was great!

My delivery was 45 mins late. The lamb in my curry was fatty & tough, the pakora & fish starter were dry and tough. At least I could eat the rice. So disappointed :-(

Found this place totally by accident. Wound up in Patrick on a whim and wandered in to see if we could chance our arm for a table.

Еда не плохая, большой выбор в меню, почти не дорого (£25 для двоих), только очень много специй, больше, чем хотелось бы. Много посетителей, свободных мест почти нет. Но думаю, что посещать больше не буду, т.к. уж слишком неуютно, шумно, тесно, стенка рядом со столом была грязной, стол липким, туалет при входе на кухню. Место явно очень популярное, но если вы любитель уюта и чистоты, лучше не экспериментируйте.

We have eaten a lot of Malaysian food, having been to Malaysia on a few occasions and brother-in-law is Malaysian. We did advise the Manager we were displeased with all the dishes we had but he did not seem to care. Will not be returning.

The Interieur is quite basic and it takes some time to get a seat and the ordered food. But it is absolutely worth waiting! The food was unbelievebale delicious and very dimensional! Plus: reasonable prices!

Recently I had the joy of visiting southern India. This morning I woke up needing a reminder of my trip. The banana leaf is about as close as I can find in Scotland to what i experienced in India. I drove 65 miles for lunch !

Venía de un curry la semana pasada y nos encantó. La decoración es muy básica y sólo hay 5 / 6 mesas, así que estaba muy concurrida, pero un gran ambiente. La mayoría de los curries son £6-£7. 50 y la mayoría de los lados son entrantes / £2- £3. 50 así que no te puedes equivocar si estás buscando obtener un montón de comida por un buen precio. Todo es delicioso, teníamos un montón de mezclado y empezar popadoms pakora y una selección de curry para compartir el principal. The restaurant added 30mins to the delivery time after we submitted the order, and then turned up 45 mins after that time, so we waited 2 hours in total. The food was cold when it arrived and parts of the order were missing. The curry was nice but not particularly spicy, would maybe go and sit in the restaurant but wouldn't bother getting a delivery again

A tiny establishment with not much room on the inside. Furthermore if you are an individual who likes restaurants with a fancy interior, then this place is not for you.

Este lugar minúsculo sirve uno de los mejores de pollo biryanis que he tenido. Es barato y limpio. Más que todo, excelente comida de calidad con exquisitos sabores de la India con cada bocado. Sin duda volveremos!

Food was cold, don't feel they are authentic anymore.

Visité la hoja de plátano después de que un amigo lo recomendó a mí. Mantuvo entusiasmado sobre él y esperaba que fuera bueno, pero no tan increíble como ella dijo. Pero era tan bueno como ella dijo! Yo acabé yendo dos noches seguidas me impresionó!

Worst parotta, they gave forzen paratha not fresh paratha and it was sooo oily. Such a pathetic thing. The gravy was good though

Loveeeeee the food! Best biryani ever and perhaps the best south India food in Glasgow! Only concern is they don't take notice of notes in the order and the delivery is not quick. Other than that, absolutely amazing food!

The food was delivered 90 min after placing the order. When I called the restaurant, they said that the driver forgot to deliver it. So unprofessional.

He comido en hojas de plátano antes y estaba esperando a tener una visita muy bien. La comida es barata y sabrosa, un ambiente muy informal. Tengo alérgia y preguntó si mi comida contenía nueces. Enseguida me aseguró que no había doble nueces, me registré y me dijeron que el mismo. Tuve una reacción alérgica, así que fuimos a la cocina a preguntar en mi comida, y el mismo hombre estaba todavía con firmeza no hacía nada. La pregunta tenía que ir a través de cuatro miembros del personal de cocina antes de la 4 de julio me dijo al instante había frutos secos en la comida. Muy mala atención al cliente y potencialmente peligrosos.

Food arrived cold, which was bound to happen when the order took 2 hours and 20 minutes to arrive. Restaurant added 35 minutes onto the delivery time initially, only for it to take another 40 minutes on top of that. To make matters worse, when calling the restaurant to ask where the food was, I was given the number of the delivery driver, who when answering the phone said "I'm on my way", and hung up. Don't order from this restaurant if you have any sense.

Food was very late and not hot. Pickle was missing from rice dish. very disappointing.

Encontré este lugar en la guía durante un reciente viaje a Glasgow. Hemos comido en la mayoría de las ciudades mejor curry lugares a lo largo de los años y este lugar atrajo mi atención- debe ser bastante barato. . O así. debería ser. En primer lugar, me gustaría destacar que no es realmente una; hay sillas y mesas, pero su estilo cafetería y claramente más de llevar - adecuado comer fuera. Bien, no nos dimos cuenta de esto, pero de todos modos, comimos en mi esposa estaba bastante decepcionado conmigo. Compartimos unos platos más pequeños para empezar y un par de curry con chapatti después. Nos advirtieron que no habría mucha comida, pero no había nada a la izquierda al final - me tienen piernas Hollow. Sólo para ser claro; no hay licencia alcohol así que sólo latas de gaseosa o agua. No recuerdo exactamente lo que tenía, pero era todo muy delicioso, cocina del sur de India ofrece algo un poco diferente, ahora solo familiarizándose a mi paladar. El único problema vino al final, cuando entramos a pagar - creo la cuenta era 39 libras, no está demasiado mal que pensar. . El único problema era cuando. regresamos al coche - 15 minutos andando - agregué todo y nos dimos cuenta de que debió haber sido más cerca de 30 libras. Estoy seguro de que fue un error genuino, pero dejó un poco de sabor amargo de todos modos.

Visited with friends on Saturday and although the food was almost all very good, the basicness of the restaurant leaves a bit to be desired. It only has 5 tables and is in dire need of a bit of TLC. Realise it is catering predominantly for students - we were definitely the oldest in there - but food on the walls, grubby menus, plastic cups (it's a BYO) could be improved? Can't fault the service - was fast and friendly - and the food was great (except the chapatis which weren't quite cooked) Pakora was to die for (very light batter) and my lamb saag absolutely delicious. At £33 for 4 of us (3 starters and 4 mains), was incredible value!

Easily the best indian food i've come across in Scotland and maybe in the UK. Trust me on this, because i'm from Malaysia (food haven in Asia) and i hv been around in the UK for some time. Great job guys!

2 hours 15 mins for delivery. Cold food.

Do not be put off by the exterior or interior, as the food makes up for it! Its appearance is completely basic, however, the South Indian curries are truly incredible - the portions are huge, and you definitely get value for money! Also, it is gluten free-friendly. It's BYOB, which I didn't realise when I visited, however tap water sufficed as the lamb saag and chicken korma were delicious. Will definitely be visiting Banana Leaf again!

Food was tasty, albeit barely any lamb or mushroom for the paid extras. £1.50 on top of the base price, and neither was noticeable. Not worth the additions. But the base omelette was delicious. Unhappy that 30 minutes was added to the collection time after payment details were entered. Collection was quick and painless

Food was really worst and wouldn't recommend to anyone. Quality of the chicken in the curry and Biriyani is unacceptable.

Discovering the fact that we can order Idly/Dosas,which are our favourite foods, was an absolute joy. Banana Leaf absolutely did a good job satisfying our craving. Had ordered the Takkali curry as well. Was more runny than I expected (more due to how curries are served in UK, rather than how I have had this before). But was absolutely great with rice like a proper South Indian Curry. I have a feeling we'll be ordering every week from here. Good job guys.

As with earlier reviews, the Indian food here is truly authentic South Indian dishes. There are many dishes that we had never even heard of. The emphasis of the dishes are based on the use of authentic spices. This is only the second time we have visited an Indian Restaurant were the dishes are served as they are made, the Poori was served first (1 is enough for two) immediately followed by the mains AND the starters. Our 'starters' were Veg Pakora & a Chilli in a light batter called a Bhaji. Our 'mains' were a Lamb dish, Butter Chicken, rice & Chapati's. Drinks: No Alcohol Licence therefore you options are Water & Soft drinks. In true South Indian style ALL of the Dishes were on the Table at the same time! The idea being that you pick from every dish as you are eating. Be warned that this place looks like a 'pop up' dingy back street Indian Restaurant. The Table & Chairs are very basic, the walls are dull & in need of a freshen up. The staff are in T-Shirt & jeans. We will definitely return here for the excellent food.

The idli was too sour to eat comfortably. Even the sambhar had too much salt. Pls check the salt level next time. Masala vada was very good.

Don't expect fancy surroundings. When you go in you might be forgiven for turning around and not coming back! Once you decide to stay you will be delighted with the quality of the food at extremely good prices. I've paid much much more and had nowhere near this quality.

Arrived 40 minutes late, cold. I live less than a mile away, so I don't know how that's even possible. Banana Leaf are usually very good, so disappointed to say the least!

It's gone downhill used to be our favourite

This place serves very authentic South Indian food for a great value. Food is generally spicy from here which I like since the real South Indian food is supposed to be spicy. I mostly have their take away services. The restaurant itself is small and have a homely feeling. It is a gem in the West End of Glasgow.

We enjoy the food from here but this time everything was stone cold. Unacceptable since delivery took almost an hour from time of ordering and we live less than 3 minutes walk away. Delivery driver did not have change so we had to overpay. Order should have included 2 portions poppadoms. Not included when we opened the bag. Too late in the evening to get anything done about it. May be my last order from them.

The food came quite late but to be honest it was worth the wait because it's the best curry in Glasgow. I had the butter chicken which is perfect because it's both creamy and spicy, my bae had the Nellore chicken which he orders repeatedly. The paratha is amazing as well.

Food was cold when it arrived and covered in sauce. Tasted nice once heated though. Would eat at the restaurant next time.

Normally a huge fan of banana leaf and their food is delicious, but it was almost stone cold! Really disappointed since normally the quality is great. :(

Extremely slow in delivery and bad food . We ordered at 6pm and the restaurant confirmed delivery time online to deliver at7.30pm but the actual delivery was done at 8.30pm. We had to wait 2.5 hours for the food. The chicken biryani and prawn biryani did not have salt or any spice. The gobi in the gobi Manchurian was spoilt and stale . The restaurant people behave arrogant and are not bothered about giving good food or service.

My food was delivered an hour and a half after I ordered it and it was cold.

Came well recommended by an Indian friend of mine for delivering authentic Indian food. Lassi, Chicken 65 and Vegetable Curry were stellar. Lamb curry was delicious but was a little cold on arrival. Gulabs were overcooked and cold on arrival. On the whole a delicious experience but I would be skeptical of ordering again based on the cold dishes.

Called in for a quick curry before going to a concert and had a thoroughly enjoyable meal. The place was busy but service was still fairly good. Food Stoke the show - both curries excellent. Well made and spicy but not ridiculously so. Could have brought our own booze too. Anyway, two of us full of great food for £17 (in total - not each)!

Got a takeaway from here tonight. Veg pakora was nice, rice was light and fluffy but the chicken korma was far too spicy. My tolerance for spice usually isn't too bad, but I felt like a korma tonight. Something nice and mild and I couldn't finish it because it was too spicy. My first time trying it and I probably wouldn't try again!

Does what it says on the tin. Korma is peng. Butter chicken is peng. Paneer is peng. It is what it is.
