Balcarres Arms in Wigan

I ordered food from the Balcarres, my first time ordering under the new management, and it didn't disappoint. The presentation was spot on but more importantly the food (chicken strips with barbecue drizzle and loaded fries with pulled pork) was amazing, more than this was the cleanliness which appeared to be impeccable which was a pleasant change, I will definitely be ordering food again.

We’re so pleased Mike and Vicky have taken over! Within the first week it feels like it’s back to how it should be. Busy, great atmosphere, lovely beer and great food being served. It’s a lovely pub in a great location and now has the right people running it after so long.

Landlady threatening behaviour and stating if she sees me in town will be worst day of my life, seems like I’m not the first person to have an issue with the new owner after great previous owners and never having an issue in this pub. Dreadful by Marston to appoint someone like this to a pub that has lots of potential. *I have proof of all this*

Called in here for food and drinks. Service was fine until there was a mix up with our order. Landlady not aware of what was on the menu and was very questionable saying 'we ordered what we got' when in fact it was wrong. Then we were made to feel very inconvenient and the landlady was huffing and puffing saying she was very busy. Because of her attitude we asked for a refund on that meal (we did point out attitude was not acceptable). No apology from her. The supervisor spoke to us who was lovely and apologised that we had had a bad experience. Will not be attending again while she is landlady, which is a shame because it's a lovely pub inside and food was decent and good value.

Looking forward to meeting up with our friends yesterday (Sunday) at the Balcarres Arms - Haigh I went to the bar to order drinks and I was told by the landlady that she had no drinks available for me, she was very hostile towards me for no reason what so ever, I have never experienced any issues ordering drinks before -I stated that her attitude was not professional and that I would be contacting the area manager, after this she told me I was barred from the pub.!! ?? Also my friends went to order drinks, she also refused to serve them. we have been going to the Balcarres Arms - Haigh for over 20 Years and have Never experienced anything like this - absolutely shocking ..

Cracking little family orientated pub located in the beautiful area of Haigh, Wigan. New owners providing great food, great atmosphere with lovely, friendly staff! Thank you Katie for looking after us, will definitely have to give the karaoke session a go!

Excellent food good value and quality friendly service Tom and Charlotte are very welcoming nothing is too much trouble although it is a long walk for us will keep coming back

Came in for the first time a couple of weeks ago since the new owners, the service was really good, we was served at the bar by a lovely girl, Katie, she was very cheerful and smiley and VERY friendly, the atmosphere was really nice, the pub was very nicely decorated with a quirky feel, we decided to eat in there which was very nice also would definitely recommend and will most definitely be returning 😀 xx

Lovely food, great atmosphere and super hosts! The ultimate chicken burger was delicious but the other half wanted to pour the gravy on his fries but couldn't because of the presentation maybe putting it on a plate/big pasta type dish so people have a choice whether to dip or pour would be good. This would have been a 5 ⭐ review but when we went the outside needs a good tidy up to get rid of the weeds at the front in the cobbles and the car park is full of litter sorry!

I would highly recommend the food, especially steak night (Thursday). It's a fantastic deal, well presented, tasty, good portion sizes and a great atmosphere. The new landlord and landlady are lovely, very welcoming.

New landlords have not only brought the food back upto scratch, steak and chips excellent and very good value, but are friendly and helpful. Would definitely go back. Hope they continue to make a real go with pub.

This place is worthy of a 5star review. Sharon and Carl are always very welcoming. The food is always good quality and excellent value for money, just wish we lived a little nearer as it is a fair walk for us but we’ll worth it even in the wind and the rain . Can’t wait for our next visit.

First time we have visited the Balcarres great atmosphere the food was fantastic great value. Really friendly staff very welcoming the karaoke was top class some great singers will definitely be back soon.

Went with family after a nice day, ordered about 5 ish took about 45 mins to come but with one meal missing. Went to the bar to ask why and the barmaid took a while to find out. Eventually bartender who took our order came over and explained the meal hadn't been ordered which was clearly his fault as other members of family were there when the order was placed. He didnt even offer an apology for the mistake and no offer to make amends and re order the meal so one of the the party had no meal at all which was unacceptable. Would not recommend this pub

Good food, good beer and a bright, clean pub with wall maps and pictures celebrating the coal mining heritage of the local communities. The pub itself has an interesting history. Carl and his friendly and efficient staff made us very welcome.

After spending the day at haigh hall country park with the children we called in for refreshments. The establishment was lovely and clean, the saff were very friendly and couldn't be more welcoming. The manger even went out of his way to put up the bouncy castle to keep the children entertained, they brought water outside for our dog. We will defernatly be returning in the near future Thankyou for making us feel so welcome

Steak night again can’t beat this honestly check it out it’s great value less than £25 for two including a drink

Had my son's christening reception at the Balcarres on 30/07/2023 and could not have wished for a better day, it was just perfect. The day went without a single issue. Staff were really friendly and accomodating, all guests were made to feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. We used their caterers and DJ service, both were incredible, the food was soon gone which is always a good sign & the DJ included two characters dressed up as Peppa Pig and Chase (paw patrol) for the kids which was a total suprise, the kids & adults loved it. We were able to dress the tables and pub as we wished, they even helped with the dressing in the morning. We were allowed to bring onsite our own face painter and balloon modeller and was allowed to even use the venues bouncy castle at no extra cost. In comparison to other places we enquired locally, they were unmatched in terms of value. They honestly couldn't have been any more helpful. The beer garden also is such a lovely, safe and clean area and came in really handy for the extra guests we didn't expect to arrive. Honestly couldn't recommend the Balcarres anymore for a function, just exceptional. Thank you so much to Sharon & Carl for an incredible day 💕.

What a great pub! Family friendly, we was here on a steak night, highly recommend, good size portions cooked by the lovely lesley who I briefly spoke to, the staff behind the bar was really nice even has a chat to my son (15) and grandson (7) while collecting our glasses, I really dont like using public toilets if I can help it but the ladies bathroom was SPOTLESS, whilst washing my hands I noticed a sign that said if you needed any feminine hygiene products they had them behind the bar for free, when we was leaving we was told by the landlord that they have a bouncy castle at the weekends (weather permiting) and we should bring our grandson along! We definitely will!!!! Warm, friendly, home from home type pubs are few and far between nowadays so this little gem was quite refreshing, thanks to everyone that works there for playing your part in making our experience a fantastic one!

Just popped into this pub with 3 friends for a quick drink before driving home. Felt guilty for only ordering 3 blackcurrants and a pint. Carl the landlord was awesome. We had a laugh about spending so little on drinks but he treated us like royalty! The pool table pay machine wasn’t working so he gave us free pool, free darts and a fan to keep us cool!! Learnt all about the special offers and entertainment on each evening which were all a bargain and sounded like great fun. ( Mon cheap real ale, Tue poker, Wed curry, Thur steak and then quiz) They were so welcoming, caring, honest and fun that I will definitely be going back. Brought our grandchildren for a meal after school on 28th April. We had a wonderful meal. I had the fish and chips which was large and fresh and very enjoyable. Met friends at the Balcarres and with covid restrictions it meant we were outside. It was table service for drinks and it was fab. We never waited to be served and the staff were lovely. Been again since and still the same. The atmosphere was great and all the staff cannot do enough for you. Will definitely be back very soon.
