Bacon Arms in West Berkshire

Went today for food. The barmaid looked like she should be working in a strip bar. Very inappropriate. She was wearing a crop top with a skirt that showed her backside if she bent over. Not impressed.

Stayed here for a week in their renovated, clean and tidy room. It was very comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Great food and marvelous open mic once a month.

wot can I say from start to finish this hotel is not wot it says. the room's are dirty even the cups in there are dirty. bathroom stinking shower curtains are fit for bin . would not rate this hotel. people rowing and shouting middle nite . spent most of our time out even left early.

Decent Guinness, fairly priced. Good atmosphere and friendly vibe.

I don't stay in these pub style places regularly, but can't fault it for the ratebi paid. Friendly bar tender showed me personally to my room. Very basic but all functional. Clean and practical bathroom. What looked like a thin mattress, in reality, slept well, plenty of pillows. WiFi required loads of info to be logged, don't like that. Great location in town at the bottom of the main high street, near the clock tower. Didn't take any pics as I was late for the theatre and then forgot! Depending on the price its an alright choice.

Maria and the team were friendly and welcoming. We ended up having a light lunch but as the pub got busier we liked the atmosphere and before we knew it , the whole afternoon evening had passed! Great vibe and the entertainment was good too!

Beautiful room, quirky due to its age but I loved that. Slight issue with the hot water but quickly resolved. Had a king size bed where I was crawling from one side to another, it was so large! Clean linen, nice selection of tea and coffee. Slept very well. I didn't have food due to having to be out and about. Nothing to complain about and superb value for £65

New management, what an improvement. Great service and food, I'll return soon.

Old pub with basic rooms but at a very good price (£60 for a Saturday night) with free parking. They do not serve breakfast. Friendly staff.

I am honestly so amazed with my experience within the bacon arms not just with the family feel (even the locals was greeting us when wee walked in) but the food is to die for I ended up having the mixed grill and I was actually shocked how big it was, loads of meat (which all tasted lovely fresh and actually cooked correctly) chips and grill veg and for £15 it was definitely worth the money My wife had the fish and chips which was also big in size and good value for money my wife said it reminds her of the fish and chips she use to have when she was a child. For the kids meal they were definitely large in size and had loads of options to customise which is good as our soon is a very picky eater We also had a cheese cake to share and was very tasty even our little man was stealing of our plate All in all very nice experience will definitely come back when we are in the area again

Nice food although the pie crust was a bit hard only one girl serving doing food checking in hotel guests serving at the bar but she was brilliant to be fair to her .

Ideal place to get head down for a night good parking for residents pool table food only on to certain times .we did manage to get our bags in early witch was good 👍

Good place to stop if in need of a room for the night. Large room with clean ensuite. Beautifully soft topped beds for a great sleep. Car park on site for guests. Spacious bar and dining area, and well tended outdoor seating amongst gorgeous flowers.

Fabulous find in Newbury. I received such a wonderful warm welcome from the new managers Matt and Maria. Their staff members Daisy and Jordan (the newly appointed chef) were also super friendly and knowledgeable. The locals were a delight to chat to and they allow dogs too! The garden was a great outdoor space for sun worshippers but also plenty of shade for those that prefer it! With beautiful flower baskets made locally adorning the surrounding private fencing and twinkling lights in the evening. They have a great space for functions at the back of the pub and a separate room for games inc pool! TVs are a plenty for watching the news and some sport. The food was top notch. The burger so tasty I didn’t capture a picture before devouring! I heard the roast was pretty good too! A wonderful experience in a welcoming, clean, relaxing, friendly pub. I will be back!

Stayed over nite, room was basic and clean , as we were on golfing trip , no food there ,as they were in between chefs . Service at the bar was great .

Staff, landlords, locals are all so welcoming. The beers are clean and crisp, the whole place including rooms upstairs are clean and it smells lovely and homely. My 5 year old was very comfortable in the pub, Daisy behind the bar was friendly and made us all feel at home. Thank you all for your hospitality, we'll be having another 4 hour drive to see you all soon.

Matt and Maria extended a very warm welcome when I visited the pub last month, both to myself and to fellow guests staying nearby who said that they would save themselves the trouble and stay at the pub next time! Was a really enjoyable evening of food, fun and games, and any future visit can only be enhanced by the offer of live music. Thank you M&M! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their hospitality.

Spent a lovely two nights at the Bacon Arms, in a great value clean room, in this characterful 17th century building.. staff were very friendly, helpful and welcoming and there’s a real community feel to the place - couldn’t believe the new owners had only been there two months! Perfect location from which to explore Newbury, just on the edge of the town centre, convenient plentiful parking, highly recommended!

Didn’t get a chance to try the food but the beer and service were excellent. Locals were chatty and welcoming as were the publicans. Good location and a handy car park at the rear (registration required on the terminal in the pub or pay at the machine). Great value rooms, I will be back!

Had a really good burger and pint when passing through on a Saturday afternoon. Lovely old building, right in the middle of town and with a car park. What more can you ask for?

A great pub near to the centre of town with plenty of parking and space inside. Loads of character and the new managers are making great headway with updating the place. Pleased to hear some decent music and got great service from the staff. Definitely worth a go, especially if you haven’t been in a while (like me).

New owners have only been there 7 weeks. They have a mountain to climb. We stayed 2 nights. Not a great experience. But I have a feeling they will turn it around. Good luck x

I just like this old building!! So comfortable!! Beds comfortable, everything clean. It doesn't matter that the floor is crooked. The food was delicious, the beer too. Quiet despite being a pub. Nice people!!

For one night only, very noisy room on the main road

I haven't been here before, so I canly think that the Bacon Arms were having a bad day. I was part of a corporate group, and it's disappointing to report that although their service was good, unfortunately, the meals weren't up to standard. Undercooked chips, no sauce that was supposed to accompany a steak meal, and they had completely forgotten my meal, and when I eventually got it, it had clearly been rushed and subsequently spoilt. The front-of-house frequently apologised, and you could see he was struggling. We all felt for him. His service was more of a 4*, but I felt I couldn'tscore more than I have for the overall experience. I'm assuming this is a one-off, but it was certainly poor on this occasion.

Great dog friendly pub, so welcoming of us and our pups! The beer garden and parking make it equally appealing and we look forward to returning soon!

We visited the Bacon Arms over the long weekend and spent a relaxing afternoon sitting in the sunny beer garden. The new owners Matt and Maria were really lovely and welcoming. It truly feels like one of Newbury's hidden gems. We'll be going back.🌞😎

The spacious and welcoming Bacon Arms is well worth a visit. New landlords are bringing in some great cask ales (a favourite was the Gravity 3.4%), while the Shipyard is also very good, with a decent low alcohol version available in bottles (0.5%). The new menu is extensive, and looks good (though we didn’t have time to eat), while friendly staff help foster a nice atmosphere to the place. We will be back.

Dropped in on a Saturday afternoon and found the place very welcoming with a friendly atmosphere, and there's a great covered courtyard out the back.

Stayed at the Bacon Arms on route to Southampton for 3 nights, Matt and Maria are the new management and have great plans for the future; they are a lovely, friendly and welcoming couple. Just 42 miles from the cruise docks so an ideal stopover

Staying tonight as a stop gap before going on holiday tomorrow. Room is cosy and homely, welcome was very welcoming and polite. The food was absolutely delish!!! Top notch chef!!! Thanks for the warm welcome We will be back again.

Just popped in with my sausage dog for a Guinness! Greeted well by the landlord, the Guinness was great, nice tidy bar with some good options. Plenty of snacks which a lot of bars are missing these days. A good real pub. Thanks!

We ate in The Greek table on a Saturday afternoon and we absolutely loved everything - the vibe, food, and the experience. We came here for the meze, and we got so full from the food servings. We loved how accommodating and helpful the staff members were, even explaining all the food as they were served as well as which sauce complements them - something that we did not experience in Cyprus. Overall great food and experience, will definitely come back!

The Greek Meze was amazing, awesome portions for a fair price.

If I could give them 0 stars then I certainly would, disgusting service and extremely rude. They gave us tin foil to wrap all our mezze items in as they gave us bowls full of dips to fill us up so we couldn’t finish our mezze, when we asked to take the rest of our food away they did’nt cook any of it and only gave us the dips! They are cheap and care only about profit. Quality of food extremely poor and after travelling to Greece they are not true to their roots at all. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING!!!!!

Had a superb time at the Greek night. Meze was served, food was fresh, delicious and just kept on coming. Loved the spinach pastries and the chicken souvlaki in particular. Loads of dips and salad as well, just as well they hand out doggy boxes to take home leftovers. The live Greek music and dancing made the evening very special. The hosts George and Sarah were great and looked after us very well. Best evening in Newbury for a long time. Thank you

For the value and location near the middle of Newbury with all its great small town offerings, this is a comfortable place to stay over. Rooms are clean. The service team are friendly, professional and attentive.

We had an 18th Birthday party there and the staff were absolutely amazing so polite friendly and very helpful. The food was amazing to. Will definitely be going back. Thank you for such a great service. Highly recommended.

What a lovely friendly cosy pub and The Greek Table restaurant at the rear is gorgeous... at New Year they had a Greek singer who was very entertaining and a lovely complimentary supper was served after midnight... well done The Bacon Arms and Team...Will definitely be back.

When we arrived they told us the kitchen was closed, moments later they said we open the kitchen for you. The bar maid was lovely to my son making him laugh. The food was great can't wait to return to try more.

We called 20 minutes before the kitchen closed for a table of 12 and they accommodated us no problem, which was greatly appreciated! We all had the Mezze to share which was absolutely delicious. The cold starters and the pitta were all wonderful. The sausages, meatballs and other hot main courses were all delicious with lots of great veggie options too. The host was very accommodating and excellent with the children. We all really enjoyed our day, we were very well looked after and can't wait to return!!

We were made aware of a pending Greek night happening on the Friday night. So as lovers of Greek food and traditions we booked for 2 for the night. The restaurant is decked out in a Greek taverna style which adds to the authenticity with Greek background music. The 1st round of food arrives as cold starters which is more than enough as a main as well!! Once you have managed to plough through this then the meat comes out!! The quality of the food id great and the portions are massive. On the night was a Greek band (2 people) who played traditional music and sung with a small amount of interactive dancing lol. All in all a great evening and we would recommend this restaurant. PS George the host is very accommodating and friendly and is a wind up merchant lol.

Stayed here while visiting family in the area,very welcoming and friendly,couple of minor issues ,the pub part closes quite early ie last orders around 9.45 even on a Friday/sat night and the lighting in the bedroom was a bit dull ,otherwise it was good base for us,1st time in Newbury which we found to be a lovely place

Stayed over on way to southampton to board a cruise , bit disappointed really, arrived at 21 50 and bar was shut. After a 4hour drive needed a beer , but no wouldn't serve us . Our room was in the stable block, wasnt the best to say the least , musty and bathroom was full of mould on tiles. Gave keys to owner following morning and he never even spoke ti ask how our stay was . Wont be going back or reccomending.

Saturday last three of us thought we'd try the Greek Table. No real ales available for a start . Two of us ordered white wine . This arrived warm in a wine cooler . Asked for a cold bottle but apparently they were all warm and had only just been added to the fridge (8pm on a not particularly busy Saturday night ). Asked for extra ice and were given just a couple more lumps . Waitress was apologetic as was her first night and had had no training . Starters arrived and were fine . My whitebait on a bed of watercress was excellent infact. Calamari also good . Mains arrived . My lamb was supposed to come with roast potatoes but they were infact boiled . Half a bit of tomatoe skin and a couple of slices of onion sat under my incredibly fatty lamb ( and I quite like fat) . Another dish of skewered chicken was ¾ fries and the smallest Greek salad we'd ever seen . Chicken was tough and dry . Asking for ketchup to go with said fries took an age to sort out and she had half finished her meal by the time it had arrived. Other persons beef course was described as average . We ordered two more glasses of wine and a beer to finish . Two of us stepped outside to vape , leaving our coats and bags etc at the table having not yet paid the bill. Third guest used the gents. On our return to the table all our drinks had been cleared away !!! We just wanted to get out n go so paid up and left . So you can see possibly why I gave a one star review ?

Overnight in room 14. Comfortable and basically clean but room let down by lack of attention to detail such as cobwebs on wall by bed; curtains hanging loose, needed their hooks put back on rings and end rings off ends of rail. TV aerial loose and hanging out of socket, socket box face plate hanging on by one screw. Bathroom, water pooled on floor between toilet and basin. Shower walls spoilt by grout between tiles black and mouldy looking. Outside bottom corner of shower messy silicone 'repair' to frame. However, shower worked well and plenty of hot water at good pressure. Overall adequate and very competitively priced; a little more attention to detail and I would give it a higher rating and recommend it with confidence.

Eaten here twice in 3 weeks food is superb, if I lived local and wasn't in the area on a business trip I'd be here as a regular I think.

Fantastic evening at the Bacon! We had seen then new menu and couldn't wait to try it. Wonderful service, very friendly staff who knew the menu very well! The food was delicious, my personal favourite was the prawn starter. Can't wait to return again with friends.
